Video: T-Mac, Vince and Oakley Look Back

What if the ’99-00 Raptors stayed together?

Kobe Bryant told SLAM that the Raptors could have won championships if Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter stayed together in Toronto. For the first time since 2000, former Raptors Charles Oakley, T-Mac and Vince sat down to talk about what was and what could have been. McGrady, for one, thinks Toronto would’ve beaten the Sixers in 2001 and advanced to the Finals if he was still a Raptor.

Not sure if they could have beat Kobe and Shaq but they would have run the east for a few years at least. If VC hits that shot in game 7 they would have made the finals without T-Mac anyway.

On a sidenote. I really hope VC lands with a contender for one last shot. I love that guy

Even without tmac they were 1 shot away but if u add t Mac to that they would have won that series easily.

One way to make a grown man cry. And booing T-Mac at the ACC was the greatest NBA experience I ever had. It’s all love. Purple fever 2000.

Watching the interview I think Vince carter jersey should be retired in Toronto. No question. The greatest player in raptor history.

This video was long over due for us Raptor fans… I’ve hated both Vince and Tmac at certain times…. but it’s all love now. VC jersey should be retired no question… and I wish Tmac stayed :(

This OTR should have been a full hour. Also, I thought Michael played it save on most of the questions. Have to love Oak though. What a great teammate to have. Interesting that he said Lenny didn’t want him there anyone.

Toronto desperately need a superstar in the near future.

People seem to forget how great T-mac was in his prime.

Both should have jerseys retired they are part of canadian sports history.

    @Chubachuchi, I don’t.

Props for my boys Vinceanity & Tmac. But what happened happened. You can’t dwell on the past. You can just learn from it take it to consideration for the future.

  • why

i am from la and t-mac in his prime was more popular than kobe from what i remember. that is how good he was. and that was the laker championship years.

I remember being torn as to who I should root for–the Knicks or Raptors? We were living in Manhattan at the time–but I was born in Toronto–and I remember betting our doorman (shout out to Mr. Finch!) $15 that the Raptors would win. Then the Raptors were swept in 3. I remember feeling bad/worried because I never paid the $15, but he was a nice man, and I probably didn’t realize then (I was a little kid) that he wasn’t actually serious about the bet. Good times.

And I know back then people were pissed about the graduation thing, but now that I look back on it… It really was ridiculous to blame the Raptors’ loss on Vince going to his graduation. I say good for him. As a fan I still appreciate those years where Vince Carter was my favorite player and I’ll never forget them.
So yes, I say retire his number. If it were up to me I’d retire T-Mac’s number too. Orlando and/or Houston should do the same, and I still regret T-Mac’s departure from Houston even though it gave us Kevin Martin.

woops, nvm, Kevin Martin came from the Carl Landry trade.

This is the problem with Toronto sports… this city dwells in the past… what if?? are you kidding me?? call me when you’re ready to talk about winning. No wonder ESPN named it the worst sports city in North America.

Cant say t-mac was stupid for leaving because he was suppose to form a tandem with grant hill in orlando but you would think he would rather do so with his own cousin.

I miss watching a young VC and prime T-Mac.Blake reminded me of Vince last season.

The 2001 Raptors wouldnt have beaten the Bucks in the ECF had they beaten the Sixers. That being said, this was long overdue.

I also didn’t know that Kobe had said that to SLAM…when was this?

  • James Aka…

I remember Tmac saying first (meaning first between him and vince) that we booed because we were jealous. Well Duh. I remember being part of the crowds that begged McGrady to stay. Of course we were mad that he didn’t make it clear that he wanted out, which led to us trading him for a 2nd round draft pick or something. That said, he said he didn’t like the weather, and he prooved that when he chose home over Chicago. I’m sill mad but because of what could of been. The man made the best decision for himself.

  • James Aka…

I like how you see the pecking order emerge in the video. Kobe, who is surely more accomplished and driven, if not more talented, is someone they both respect the opinion of. Wow in their eyes. Also worth mentioning, Slam resonates more with them than say peter vescey

i bet Ryan Jones loves it when people bring up that Kobe article.

  • http://www.slamonline.com SMills

@torontoballer Of course the city dwells in the past, how else could they bear putting up with what they have now?

  • http://realgm.com Ghost

Seems like I’m late to the party on this one so all I’m going to say is shoulda, coulda, woulda nothing, winners never quit. McGrady and Carter learned that the hard way.

  • Zabbah

I wish Vince would give a straight answer because those were good questions. This interview really sucked.

  • meloman2.0

OMG “Bring back T-mac” I remember those chants… and i was so young, i thought there was no way he’d leave after those chants
