Video: Kobe Bryant, Ricky Rubio Talk Smack About the Olympics

Marca.com captured this hilarious scene following the Lakers’ win in Minnesota on Sunday night, and Complex transcribed the back-and-forth between Ricky Rubio and Kobe Bryant:

Bryant: “You talking about London?” [to Rubio and Pau Gasol]

Gasol: “Oh yeah.”

Rubio: “You’re gonna be there?”

Bryant: “Yeah.”

Rubio: “You know you’re getting the silver medal. You know that.”

Bryant: “Shiiiiiiit! I’m taking bets. If I win, I get the keys of Barcelona.”

Rubio: “I bet what you want.”

Bryant: “I’ll take it!”

That was Awesome. Gotta love Ricky talkin (friendly) smack on kobe.

  • Fresh Boirdee

Kobe sounds so funny when he curses; it sounds so forced and out of place.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    Shieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttt

  • http://sjdfklf.com Jukai

You know you’re big time when Kobe talks back at you instead of just glaring and walking away.

  • KidCongo

To be stuck in Minneapolis when you could be living in Barcelona…
    Just sayin’..

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    You’re welcome.

  • Riggs

    kobe watches the wire, confirmed.

  • OTB

Kobe channeled his inner Clay Davis on that one.

  • Kadavour

    nice.

  • Yesse

    Dope.

  • kobesBESTfriend

just don’t give Lebron the ball in the 4th quarter and we got gold easy

  • https://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

^And don’t give Kobe the ball for the 1st 47 min for fear of shooting us out of the game.
That was an awesome exchange between Mamba and Rubio though. I like how casually the rookie talks trash to an NBA legend.

  • http://Gmail.com Gilbert

Tell Rubio that, he has to learn how to crawl before he can walk.

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

does kobe think rubio has the keys to barcelona?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Awesome.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

This will be Kobe’s last Olympics. He’s going down in glory you can bet on that. I foresee some Dream Team-esque numbers and overall play from the team. This group is as good as Dream Team II.

  • Dan

id give spain the slight edge on the us. they dont have to hide from the us in terms of physicality, play better team ball plus are more used to full zone defense. its fiba rules: that means the refs call traveling violations properly, which almost doesnt get called at all in the nba. there is surely more individual talent in the us roster, no doubt. but that wont guarantee them a gold medal.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The US is clearly better then everyone else.

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

Love this vid. Man I have to get some tickets for the Olympics ASAP!!! Spain has the best team in our history, it can be a great great matchup.

  • mark

rubio is so cool. you could tell kobe respects him. that’s high praise for the kid!

  • http://Www.achtamsterdam.nl Phil

Nobody ever, ever, eveeeeeeer talked trash to jordan. Just another little or not so little differance between them. Not hating just saying.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

co-sign nbk. WTF Dan?… Yeah they are obviously 2nd best, but there is a huuuuuge gap in between them and the US. No chance the US does not get Gold. All bets welcome.

  • OTB

@LakeShow – I’m not sure if you actually watched the 2008 Gold medal game, but it went down to the wire. Spain came back on a team featuring Lebron/Kobe/Wade in their primes numerous times, and gave them quite a stare. Kobe and Wade were the ones who led the US to victory however. I wouldn’t doubt Spain again.

  • Mariano

US-Spain will be a close game

  • startown

Looked at Spain’s roster and they will be tough, Rubio, Gasol x 2, Ibaka, Fernandez, Calderon, to name a few

  • Dan

@lake show: you guys dont remember the last dacade too well, when teams like argentina or spain won gold medals and the us teams lost to other international squads? sure, the us got the best individual talent on the roster. its just no 100% thing that they win it all. and dont forget – it was even close for the redeem team. or didnt you watch that final game? ;)

  • Juice

@Phil- A lot of players talked smack to Jordan… John Starks, Malone, Bird, and the list goes on… How long have u been watchin Basketball??? It will be a good game…FOR THE USA… TOO MANY GOOD ATHLETES ON TEAM USA… PLUS YOU HAVE A FEW ON THEIR THAT ARE ALREADY TEAMATES… THE REST JUST HAVE TO GET USE TO PLAYING EACH OTHER… COACH K IS ONE OF THE BEST COACHES IN HISTORY…

  • http://slamonline.com. datkid

yeah but you guys won’t win again tho. ^^ seriously. your NOT winning.

  • Dan

what you mean by “you guys”? im not from spain. also not from argentina. and im not hating on the us. sure they have the best players in the world. the competition is just tough and they are not the only legit contenders. the redeem team allready won gold back for the usa. even though they won every game, some games were very close. its not the 90s anymore. and thats no best of 7 series. if the us team has a bad day and some other team has a good one, anything can happen.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The gold medal game that Kobe tried to shoot team USA out of? that they still won? lol and please do not bring up any US team before 2008, nobody wanted to play for them in those years. The 06 and 04 teams are not a true representation of the US team. This years team has 12 all-stars and 5 of the 5 best players on earth. To say Spain has an equal team to the US is to say you don’t know what your talking about.

  • MLK4Life

Rose, Paul, Williams, Wade, Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Melo, Dwight, Blake, Love, etc. I don’t see any team keeping up with the US. This team will be better than the 08 squad.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

OTB, You might not be sure if I watched it, but I know I did. I also know that Spain is even better now then they were then. You know who wasn’t on the US team though? Durant. Maybe the biggest mismatch will be Durant for other teams. If he comes off the bench or starts teams will need to keep that dude in check. You know how hard it is going to be to keep Durant in check when you have to deal with Kobe. And LeBron. And D-Wade. And Melo. And Dwight. And K-Love/Griffin. I know Spain is good, but are you realizing how much better the US is now then they were then. The only player who is not “better” than they were last go around is Kobe. And i’m not to worried about the old man falling off to much either. Dan: Does this team resemble a Vince Carter led Olympic team? Allen Iverson? Starbury? You gotta be kidding me with the “you don’t remember the last decade” garbage. I remember just fine, and it has nothing to do with where the US team is now. Guaranteed they don’t lose a game.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

You’re crazy if you think Nobody ever talked trash to Jordan… Barkley? Payton? thats just to name a couple right off the top.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Bird never shut up over his whole career. SO you can safely add him to that list. Oh and the whole entire 1988-89-90 Pistons Roster

  • robb

@Phil many players talked trash to MJ. He loved it.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I like how sure Phil was “ever, evvvvvvver, everrrrr, ever.” Yet he’s so wrong. MJ took a ton of trash talking.

  • jake

What I wouldn’t give to see Mike in his prime again….every time I see that fadeaway jump shot or someone with their tongue hanging out it reminds me of all the rings and mvps and gold medals

  • https://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

NEWS FLASH: Silver is Gold to the rest of the world again. The Star Spangled Banner is the official closing theme of Olympic Basketball once again.

  • https://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Phil, you might want to look up the footage of Jordan trying to choke out Reggie Miller after they got heated talking trash.

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

Spain has a huge hole at the small forward. With the likes of Lebron, Durant and Melo around it will be a problem, but they can’t play all at the same time. Spain has gained huge experience against NBA players and it would make a great Final if it happens. But the US is the clear-cut favorite no doubt about it.

  • Canesta

@Dan How can you say that fiba calls traveling the right way? Basketball was invented in America, by an American. In America 3 steps are allowed, fiba has its own rules with 2 steps. But to say that they do it right when we are the ones who invented it…no.

  • Pais

This is likely to be the best US squad since the original dream team. Spain will be the put up the best competition but it won’t be as close as it was the last time they met. All you guys forget to mention Spain’s best player, forget the Gasol bros, or Rubio (who may not even start), Juan Carlos Navarro is the business.

  • http://www.blogspot.com LLC#12

Cosign Pais, Navarro is a gun, shame his NBA career never worked out how it could of, but he’s a great player. In terms of individual talent USA would destroy Spain, but basketballs not entirely about individual talent, Spain could spring an upset..but it WOULD be an upset.

  • Scient

@Canesta stop talking crap. There has never been a rule allowing 3 steps. It’s 2 steps everywhere. NBA is just being a pussy about it and allowing traveling in a multitude of situations – hop-step stops, steps taken after hop-step stops, steps before ball touches ground, extra steps after the allowed ones, pivot shuffling.

Also technically basketball was invented by a Canadian.

  • Pais

Dan’s on crack, it’s insulting to suggest that the US ambitions for a gold medal hinge on their being able to play without traveling. What ridiculous thing to say. I think Phil probably understands the error of his ways but I’ll chime in anyways, talking trash was a large part of what 90′s basketball was about and Jordan was by no means exempted from this. You’re showing your age when you say stuff like that.

  • Pais

@LLC#12 – I think the core of the US team has matured sufficiently enough to render the likely hood of an upset as being extremely small. But I’ll concede that every other team aside from Spain the likely hood is ZERO

  • deafballer

@ Canesta, wasn’t basketball invented by James Naismith? He was born in Canada….

  • http://slamonline.com Big D

This isn’t 1992….the U.S. will not smoothly walk to the Gold. Spain has a real legitimate roster and they play together was better than the U.S. The U.S. has the best stand-alone talent, but put together, Spain might have the edge.

  • Pais

Nooooo…please don’t start one of these stupid Canada vs America inventing bball debates. Yes Naismith was Canadian and yes he invented while in the states. Who cares, it’s irrelevant.

  • rand33p

kobe won it for US in beijing over spain and he’ll do it again
