Video: Western Kentucky Loses Against Six Players

Um, what?

Crazy stuff here, courtesy of the Sun Belt Conference. Last night, Western Kentucky (5-11) and Louisiana-Lafayette (8-8) needed extra play to determine a winner. With the game tied at 70, Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton converted on a go-ahead layup with 3 seconds remaining in overtime. But both coaches, the broadcasters, and, um, the referees failed to realize Lafayette had six players on the court for the final possession. Western Kentucky’s half-court attempt hit the backboard as time expired, and the game ended. Just like that. Mike Wood, the Sun Belt’s coordinator of officials, said the referees can’t go back to the monitor and overturn a play because six men are on the floor. Either they catch it live and call a violation or it’s history. And to cap it all off, Western Kentucky fired head coach Ken McDonald just hours after the game. Confusion, madness and inexplicable officiating in this one. Wow.

What’s funny is that I was on an AAU team and we won with only six players. The team we were facing at the time was the #3 team in our region. We ended up finishing the game with 3 people including myself(due to foul trouble).

I know right! If I was a player I would have stopped that early it’s their fault they lost they can’t count!

Man it must suck to be red #1, no defender within 10 feet of you and you still don’t get passed the ball? That’s just cold! Perhaps its karma, cause if anyone was going to notice there was an extra player on court, it would of been him, the extra player on court…

I don’t think its crazy that the players didn’t notice. The ball is being inbounded you’re running to your man, everyone is scrambling. A coach on the sideline should have been looking at the matchups tho to make sure everyone had their man. But as a former player, you just assume its 5 on 5. That play didn’t last long enough for anyone to really notice. Had the ball been passed around 2 or 3 times then it would have been picked up.

This Is ALL the fault of the Refs and coaches “How in the Hell does anyone coach or ref and don’t catch that HUGE!!! mistake in a game winning play. That needs to go before the NCAA board Just think if that was a game desiding a berth into the NCAA tournament, that should have been a tech Louisiana and the ball given to WKU. RIGHT IS RIGHT AND WRONG IS WRONG!!
