Videos: Knicks-Mavs Top Plays

JR Smith debuts, Knicks get a matinee Lin.

The New York Knicks rebounded from a tough loss on Friday to defeat the defending champion Dallas Mavericks earlier today, 104-97. Jeremy Lin continued the abuse, with 28 points and 14 assists, JR Smith made an immediate impact in his debut and Steve Novak sealed the win with a barrage of 3′s in the final minutes. We’ve got hella basketball on today’s dial, but relive some of New York’s best plays above.

When Melo comes back…..if this team gels……Knicks will be a problem……dem boys in south beach better be paying attention!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

When was the last time a single game had its own personal top plays on slam? The hype is getting ridiculous

  • kh

fitting that JR Smith chose #8

  • riggs

the knicks beat the mavs, what pray tell does jeremy lin needs to do now to prove himself?

  • http://www.nba.com riggsucks

He hasn’t proven anything except being an awesome role player

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Man I hope his string of great games continues, because quite frankly I cannot get enough of Jtaylor getting b*tthurt.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

LMFAO @ JTaylor’s comment. Word. I’m confident Melo will fall in line. What I’m hoping for is for Baron Davis to return and lead a second unit that has the potential to be a nightmare for opposing teams…

  • LaKid

I’m with JTaylor on this, too much hype. It’s a cool story, the stars have aligned for him (D’antoni being his coach, media storm in NY, injuries letting him take control, etc) but my god I have seen way too much of this guy.

the heat game deserved it’s own top ten not this game. lin is good, hype is overblown

You couldn’t script this if you were making a movie. Jeremy Lin since the Nets game has scored 225 points in 9 games, with 8 of them being starts. That is an average of 25 PPG. He’s got 83 assist during that same stretch of 9 games, which is an average of 9.2 assist per game. Jeremy Lin’s averages since he got in the Nets game a little over 2 weeks ago are the following: 25 PPG (82-161 for 51%) 9.2 AST 3.8 REB 2.22 STL. If it’s so easy to do what Jeremy Lin is doing, then why aren’t more point guards putting up averages like this? Answer: Jeremy Lin is special. He’s breaking records and doors down.

Did you know? Kobe Bryant and Jeremy Lin don’t just share the fact they each drained a game winning shots against the Raptors in Toronto this season, but they share a birthday. Kobe Bryant was born on August 23, 1978…Ten years later to the day on August 23, 1988, Jeremy Lin was born.

@orange cool fact. I know this game was hyped but not only by slam, ABC hype this game up like crazy, felt Like a playoff game ! As for Lin, for all you Haters (Lin , Jtaylor) what does this kid have to do to prove he’s LEGIT to yall, pay respect were its due.. when melo gets back he will fall in line, if anyone watched the game in its entirety , they noticed j.r wasn’t bein the proclaimed blackhole he is, and 2nd , the offense struggled when he was on the bench. The Knicks is a problem , believe it or not, so quit the hating guys. Btw Lin has the most points in the NBA , leading superstars like Kevin Durant… !

  • l2ising Phoenix

^ since his outburst against the Nets … #knicks

  • http://anyoldthing Ugh

    1) Was that Shawn Marion letting Lin walk to the basket?
    2) Hey wow, JR shooting the ball.
    3) “This video is private.”
    4) Was that Shawn Marion letting Lin walk to the basket?
    5) Lin with the clutch steal in the … third quarter… against a team from the other conference… in the first half of the season.

No, really, this is quality coverage.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

So much for the “Marion for DPOY” hype I was hearing all week. Dude let lin blow past him on numerous occasions.
Also, when did I ever say that Lin wasn’t legit?

  • l2ising Phoenix

^ if you didn’t I apologize. Yeeaa he toasted Marion a couple of times. & my man j.r was contributing nicely (needs a haircut tho).

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Bl3GRdULQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player 1982

I’ finding it funny that every single post here is true.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Not liking the hype is not the same as hating on Lin. Seriously, the media coverage of him is totally shutting out any other NBA news and that’s turning off hardcore fans. I’m down with Lin and his rise is making me happy as hell, but I wish the media would turn it down a little. Of course, it’s not gonna happen, but I don’t blame Lin for it. In every interview he’s given, he’s stayed humble and tried to praise his teammates.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

People need to let ish go. The media gives only what the consumers want. There’s a HEAT INDEX on ESPN. And now there’s J Lin hype. Why are we surprised. Why do we complain.

  • l2ising Phoenix

You know what’s crazy, Lin is making millions in endorsements. 13 million I heard so far.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com/ Seth

Was that Mark Zuckerberg in the JR Smith highlight? Right behind the bench.

  • dazzy

The only thing funnier than Lin’s newfound stardom are the haters who scream they’re tired of it, yet comment on every post related to it.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Freaking Mavs, losing to the LinKnicks, ending another big winning streak, regressing to turnover-no D mode, Lamar sleepwalking all season, AAAARRRRGH.
You vets (Kidd turnover), Lamar, Vince, Haywood better GET YOUR ACT together. Cant let JRchucker and Novak get clean looks!
Damnit, Dirk’s playing so well, the others are ballwatching.
Lost ground to Tony Par… I mean the Spurs, too.

  • MikeC.

JR was black holin’ it up a few times. He took a few crazy shots, but NY actually needs someone like that. Fields is good, but has a very orthodox game. He’s not going to surprise. JR is unpredictable in ways that are both good and bad. More good than bad today. Mavs had a solid gameplan with the hard traps, but JR’s shooting and slashing game helped nullify that gameplan. Then Novack went off and that was that. The Knicks look like they genuinely enjoy playing basketball again.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Jake

@ORANGE you forgot at stat in that list, in 8 starts hes also averaging 6 and a half turnovers per contest…

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

I just saw a “Lin better than Magic?” headline on SC.

  • BillOReily

Is it just me or does anyone find the whole Lin thing strange…there are better, faster, stronger PG’s in the league..so why is he the only one in the entire NBA doing this? My personal thoughts on this is so people start watching the NBA again so the league needed their own Tim Tebow story…how does this guy score 28 pts on Deron Williams who is suppose to be the Nets “Franchise” player and an All-Star? give me a break how can no one lock this dude down on D? Watch his dunk against the Wizards he went from halfcourt all the way to the basket uncontested…i smell fish.

  • Wet

I like the story, I think J Lin can ball. I’m not even mad about all the turnovers, he’s new, plays a lot of minutes, and has the ball every play.

But the media coverage is getting old. Just like it does with Lebron. I don’t want to here every think about his life. Perhaps I just follow to much sports media, but they can really burn you out on stuff these days.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ BillOReily (weird name to choose btw unless you really are that racist bastard), there are more better, faster and stronger PG’s in teh league, but guess what? They were expected to be. That’s why they were chosen in the NBA draft! Lin wasn’t drafted and the teams that he did somehow make, cut him every time before he landed in NY. Tim Tebow on the other hand WAS drafted – in the first round too – and carried certain expectations with him. People can downplay Lin’s hype all they want, but they can’t take away his accomplishments thus far and what he will accomplish as he moves forward.

  • l2ising Phoenix

@billoreily, your really calling the Lin breakout a conspiracy… Smh

  • riggs

@O: word, people forgot the hype that Gilbert Arenas was getting back in the day. He also got his ESPN special and the nickname Agent 0 came from ESPN. Don’t act like Lin is the first.

  • James aka…

When an undrafted players starts 9 games, and averages 25 points, 9.5 assists, 3.7 boards, 2.4 steals (and 6 turnovers), the hype is legitimate.

  • James aka…

(the stats changed because of his game today of course)

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

i want to see how JLin goes up against Chicago and/or OKC, and if he continues averaging 20pts, 9.5 assists, 3.7reb, 2.4 steal (according roughly to @James aka) and them turnovers go down then ill decide if the hype is legit

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ VanCityBBall, surprised you didn’t throw Miami into that mix. Might as well have…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

    Lin is a monster.
If it lasts we’ll get used to it.
    If not, smh…

  • jinolin

NY is deep, and once they gel before the REAL season they will be a REAL problem for ANYONE in the league.
Adding JR for a low rental fee was a good move by the front office, as mentioned in the past, he will shoot you out of games at times… but when he’s on he is easily a top 5 offensive talent at the 2 spot.
Melo will gel with this squad, his scoring will drop along with his assists, but he will space the floor opening the lane for Lin’s aggressive drives, and once the defense adjust (via double teams on Lin) that will open up Melo where he can go man to man, and quite frankly he is the most effective scorer this side of the Mississippi River (Melo‘s only offensive competition is the pogo stick out in OKC).
Amare needs to stop settling, and drive the damn ball and force the action on the inside, he is to gifted to settle for the J, use the pick and pop for a couple of buckets and then just throw it down real Kosher on them Amare.
The Beard is the biggest X factor to this team, if he can get/stay healthy and QB the second unit effectively; this will be the third best bench in the league (Chi and Philly are 1 and 2 IMO) but the Knicks may have the best rotation (1-11) in the NBA.
Lin’s scoring will go down (to 14-18 ppg), his assists will go up (10-12 apg), and most importantly the turnovers will drop, but I think they will still be relatively high, may even lead the league in that static once the season is over (keep in mind that the catalyst to his rise happened just 8 games ago, and this is a shortened season with limited practice time, and this team is relatively new— JR was still in China 2 days ago).
The bottom line is that Lin fits the Dantoni Style of play, needless to say, the Knicks found themselves a point guard that Spike Lee can have wet dreams about.

  • ChipS

JR had a nice debut, bought energy and played defense! Nobody wants to mention that. Why do you think D’Antoni stuck with him in the second half. Chased Jason Terry around, closed out on Carter, and when the switch came he gave Dirk no room. I seen only three bad shots, contested three, contested step back jumper, and a desperation heave at the end of the shot clock when he got the ball late. The other shots were shots he’s gonna get in this system and he’s gonna make. Made a couple nice passes. I think the pick and roll is gonna work well with him and Stat. No practice time, long flight from china to LAX couple nights ago, stops at offseason home in Vegas to get some rest, flies to NYC, lands just last night, doesn’t know if he’s gonna play, coach puts him in, instanly makes a hustle play, gives team energy. Solid debut in my book. Oh Yeah and that play where he was on the break, then crossed between his legs and then jumps off the wrong leg and still dunks it, Man! He’s gonna excite the garden alot.

  • http://www.nba.com Red

    LOL stanning 101

  • Dingo Rob

The hype is justified, he steps up and nearly averaging a double double, people still doubt and wait for him to fail. He keeps hitting shots, dishing out dimes, overall he brings a smile to my face and I’m sure may others – beats the hell out of hearing about Dwight Howard

  • eZ

Some numbers that might be reason to worry?
    Amare, 33 mins, 10 shots
    JR 29 minutes, 16 shots
    Lin 45 minutes, 20 shots
I think Lin wil burn out playing so many minutes a night, and with carmello returning the risk is that amara wil be relegated to role player, a chandler type without the great d.

  • underdog

Dude is straight ballin’. But, it’s still the post lockout regular season. I’ll wait until the playoffs to decide who is great and who is good enough.

  • hillbilly

It was raining treys, yesterday. If this keeps up, they’re going to have to rename MSG “The House of Flying Daggers”.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca niQ

@Seth, yea it was Mark Zuckerberg. He was at the game. And I laughed at the clips Lin blew by Cuban’s DPOY candidate Marion. HAhaha

  • http://www.racialicious.com/2012/02/15/memewatch-adventures-in-linsanity/#more-20490 Allenp

D’Antoni always burns players out. He was doing it to Amare last year.

  • http://anyoldthing Ugh

@ Tealish: “The media gives only what the consumers want. Why are we surprised. Why do we complain.”
Occam’s Razor would suggest it’s because we’re consumers and we’re not getting what we want, which means your first statement is incorrect.
