Video: Delonte West T’d Up for Giving Gordon Hayward a ‘Wet Willie’

“I saw some lint in his hair, and I wanted to get it out for him.”

A clearly frustrated Delonte West earned himself a technical foul during the Mavericks/Jazz game in Utah last night, in one of the more unique ways imaginable. West gave Gordon Hayward a “wet willie”, and gave some pretty hilarious answers when asked about it by reporters in the locker room following the game (via the Salt Lake Tribune, Star-Telegram and Dallas Morning News): “I went over the line,’ West said. ‘I saw some lint in his hair, and I wanted to get it out for him. Seriously, we were like two warriors out there. But I forgot the NBA is a gentlemen’s game. They want us to battle and scrap, but they want us to do it nicely.’ [...] ‘I was giving him a wet willie. That’s all.’ Asked about possibly receiving a fine or a suspension from the NBA, West said: ‘We are two warriors. We’re out here battling on the battlefield. I forgot the NBA is a gentleman’s game, so we have to fight and scrap and do it nicely. Everything is left on the court, though.’ [...] ‘You get caught up in the emotions and it’s physical. You get caught in the moment sometimes.’ Asked if he was expecting a fine from the NBA, he said: ‘If they do, they do. If they don’t, they don’t. It’s just part of the game,’ he added. ‘I’m not disappointed in anything. We play as players and the refs ref. Everyone’s doing their best.’ West said he’s well aware of the line the NBA has drawn in terms of player conduct on the court. ‘The fines and stuff they put in place the last couple years, that line is like jumping off a cliff,’ he said.”

Delonte is such a master! All heads must bow…

One finger mush. Still classic. And the replays never showed what happened up the court to make Delonte upset. You know something happened.

  • ALD

he suffers from bi polar disorder

  • http://Www.achtamsterdam.nl Phil

I don’t kboe if I should be prooud of Hayward for reacting that way, or ashamed. I mean…it’s the smart move, but he’s also getting punked.

  • MUBWAR

    this was so awkward live.

@Phil – Hayward got the final punk by winning the game.

  • Well DAMN

I was expecting to laugh at this video. Misleading title.

He won a game. It’s a basketball game. How is that a “win” in life?

  • Mr. West

he gave LeBrons mom ‘the real wet willy’

  • Do Work

this announcer is the lowest of the low…what a whiner

  • Top$helf

You can’t let another grown man just stick his finger in your ear and walk away you at least gotta fake like you’re mad and want to retaliate knowing that your teammates will hold you back

  • bike

That’s actually a pretty awesome putdown. Harmless, yet very degrading.

  • http://sportsbybrooks.com/boxscores-never-lie-or-exaggerate-on-twitter-30011 Allenp

It’s funny that people think this was a wet willy. It was clearly a one finger mush common in black neighborhoods across the country. The one finger mush is used to express intense disdain, and a lack of respect. Unlike the full hand mush, it implies that the mushee is a true punk and beneath the musher.
This is where media diversity is important. lol.

  • Mike Mihalow

Good job, Delonte. That 1 point cost your team the game. Idiot.

  • AQWORD

    Delonte West 4 president.

  • thetalkingcomb

First of all, Delonte West is the ugliest motherf’r (sorry Bron) in the history of sport. His face looks like a crescent moon (full of holes too) that was run over by a steamroller. He makes Lady Gaga’s pubic hair look like Jessica Alba.

Secondly, that was some funny sh*t!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

SMH, this surely isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last, that Delonte has stuck his finger is someone’s orifice.

  • Tempest

Thug Life! Delontes a tad jealous tho cause Haywards going places in the league

Hahahha. I love both players. I love both their expressions(or lack there of for Hayward). I always want to do sh*t like Delonte does(minus biking with a shotgun in a guitar case and stuff). I also always want to be the bigger man like Hayward was. Good stuff all around.

  • MELO

hilarious but how does Delonte still get calls from teams every summer but Iverson doesnt?

  • T-Money

i have to co-sign allenp on this, the index on someone is basically saying “you’re not about to do sh– to me”. lakeshow – hayward was not trying to be the bigger man about this lolol, he wasn’t starting ANYTHING with dwest EVER.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

You think because D-West is loco, that Hayward doesn’t want none? Bahh. That’s everyones favorite guy to fight. They crazy one that has so much anger built up that he can’t keep his head level and cool enough to remember what the right thingt to dop is. Try pulling that sh*t to on Hayward’s momma, then you’ll see a ass-whuppin by the young man. You gotta check your priorities. Your a professional athlete. You are paid to play basketball. He doesn’t want a fine because he’s still on rookie salary and a tech coulda (did) lost(lose)the game for the team that gets a T in that situation.
The bigger man is going to walk away. That’s how I was brought up anyway. If you think he should have punched Delonte… That’s on you. We are birds of a different feather if that’s the case.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Geez I gotta spell check myself before I wreck myself.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allenp: From one student of the mush to another–does the one-finger mush usually target the ear canal or can one deliver said mush anywhere on the enemy’s countenance?

  • ricky bobby

Who need all dem refs and sh*t? We dont need nobody tellin us how to behave. If some fool poss you off den you get him. Dat de way of de street. All lees fools need to start seein thangs our way. We don need no civilization. De man who can fight is de man who is right.

  • http://chicagotribune.com Diesel

@Allen – Do I really need to explain to you how a win for a team trying to make the playoffs in a “basketball game” which just happens to be their career is important? Or how dumb ass Delonte West caused his team a loss and a match up with OKC first round which is almost a certain first round exist? So you think Delonte won something “in life” by pushing his finger into the ear of a guy that wasn’t looking? If that’s a win in your life you must have a pathetic life. “Congratulations Delonte, you could be fined $25k but damnit, you got your finger in his ear good!” You’re an idiot Allen.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Diesel…. lmao.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Teddy…LMAO. “student of the mush.” What a great band name.

  • http://sportsbybrooks.com/boxscores-never-lie-or-exaggerate-on-twitter-30011 Allenp

    Teddy
I think he was trying to catch the side of his face and his aim was off. That’s how the ear got involved. The side of the face is a favorite target for mushing.
    Diesel
Neither team is winning anything whether they get to the playoffs or not. If you watch the replay, Hayward and West have an altercation on one end that continues down the court. West takes exception and pushes him on the face. Hayward decides to pretend like he has no idea what this guy’s problem is and walk away.
It’s not that big of a deal. The game went to three overtimes. That one point was not the deciding factor. It happened in the second FREAKING QUARTER!
Y’all need to be real. Like getting a tech is the worst possible thing in the world to do in a game in the second quarter.
    Ok, cool.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Hahaha. Too many good laughs on this site. Keeps me coming back for more.

  • OTB

Lol at people acting as if Delonte’s the man cause he gave another player a wet willie. He was just getting mad Hayward was busting his a@@ on the court. I have more respect for Hayward for simply walking away…that is a man who does his job well – why cost your team a point with a technical or by getting kicked out of the game retaliating?

Players used to get like this with Ginobili when he was busting on guys, and on Dirk (David West comes to mind). Not every holds that mentality that you have to retaliate. Hayward is a bigger man for walking away and not getting pulled into Delonte’s moronic tactics.

Complex magazine says that Delonte called Hayward a “p*ssy a)ss white boy” as he mushed him.
    Yep, my theory was correct.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

I have no problem with the two players having an altercation, Delonte reacting the way he did, or Hayward choosing to play dumb the way he did. If you’re playing basketball competitively, you’re always taught to let your game do the talking and the ultimate payback is getting the win. Which is what Hayward did. I find it funny that grown men think Delonte somehow came out on top in this equation because he muched the guy’s ear. You even said he came out on top IN LIFE! Hayward is a rising star in this league…10 years from now he’ll be worth about $100 million, will be sitting around with his friends talking about “remember when that crazy guy put his finger in my ear? What was his name?” Meanwhile, Delonte will be freshly fired from his furniture gig, homeless, warming himself by a dumpster fire. But he can rest assured that Hayward is beneath him in life because he managed to get his finger square in his ear canal.

  • OTB

^ I’m a big fan of Hayward…he reminds me of a young Ginobili. Can’t wait till he’s out of Utah.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I undecided on Hayward’s game. He shows flashes of brilliance, but he needs to work on his 3 point shooting and ball handling. He is a pretty talented guy who can be something along the lines of of 20ppg, 6 rebounds, 4 assists. He needs to work on his 1 on 1 Defense also. He tries, but he’s not very laterally quick for the 2 guard position.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

What was your theory there Allen? Hate crime?

  • http://sportsbybrooks.com/boxscores-never-lie-or-exaggerate-on-twitter-30011 Allenp

My comments was in response to your belief that somehow Hayward got the final punking by winning the game. I’ve never celebrated what West did, just pointed out that it wasn’t a wet willy as it has been described.
But I also don’t think Hayward was the bigger man or won at life because he walked away. He engaged in cheap shot and altercations then pretended to be above it all when West let him know he didn’t appreciate it. To me, that’s shady and walking away wasn’t an act of strength but of cowardice. I don’t subscribe to the hit someone when no one is watching and then pretend to be innocent school of thought.
Finally, Delonte has a mental illness. You are probably right that he will end up hard up in life as far as money. People with mental illness often have that problem. If the fact that Delonte’s mental illness will likely lead to future hardship is proof that Hayward made the right decision in your opinion, then so be it.
I think Hayward is blessed not to have a mental illness.

  • http://sportsbybrooks.com/boxscores-never-lie-or-exaggerate-on-twitter-30011 Allenp

He called him a name. I can see Hayward taking offense. A hate crime involves criminal actions. Nothing criminal occurred here.
Most likely West lashed out like most people by attacking the person he was upset with in a hurtful manner. That’s how most bigoted comments are made.
