TNT: Charles Barkley Didn’t Utter Gay Slur During Hawks/Celtics Game

The employer of both Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith claims no gay slur was used, but based on the video above, you can judge for yourselves. From USA Today: “In the pregame show before TNT’s Atlanta Hawks-Boston Celtics game, Kenny Smith was discussing a colorfully-dressed Celtics fan who, said Smith, ‘was dressed like a fan.’ Several Twitter users felt otherwise, concluding a slur had been used. But TNT spokesman Nate Smeltz, after conferring with Smith and Barkley and the show’s production staffers, said Smith said ‘fan’ and ‘definitively did not say anything else.’”

Everybody looking/trying to be offended by something nowadays…

  • EJ

    He said fan, case closed.

  • shuref00t

^I’m offended by that broad generalization.

  • ron

    LoL

  • Mike Mihalow

But immediately after, he said “its the same thing as puttin on pink”.

  • DreDay

‘CUPCAKE’ HAS DIFFERENT MEANINGS WHERE I LIVE.

  • http://www.chicagoskyblog.wordpress.com audsquad

This is ridiculous. He CLEARLY said “fan”…followed by “its the same thing as putting on PAINT”, as in body paint. TNT did the right thing by standing behind their guy.

  • dan

he said fag, plain and simple. so what? not a big deal. that was just some joking around and no aggressive discrimination

  • http://www.slamonline.com Dagger

Okay. “Please don’t have no kids, he’s dressed as a fan, it’s the same thing as puttin’ on pink.” As if “fan” makes sense there. Clearly he said “fag.”

  • Lloyd

@Mike Mihalow that was Kenny talking and he said, “it’s the same thing as puttin’ on paint”. Sounds like “fan” but Charles doesn’t enunciate usually, like he gives up half way through his word, so it’s hard to tell. That said he’s great and that Emmy was well deserved!

  • Heals

It’s funny to me that those “offended” heard “f-a-” then assumed a “-g” instead of an “-n” followed it by looking at how Don Bishop the Magic Whatever was dressed, so that makes Kenny/Charles the rude one…

  • http://sdfklf.com Jukai

Lotta people jumping to defend Charles here.

  • Mike Mihalow

lol, the new debate: ‘Pink’ or ‘Paint’?

  • bike

Regardless, the fan looks like a fruitcake.

  • RIGGS

given the context of who they were talking about, i’d like for whoever claimed that kenny said f_g should be smacked. Also, if you heard pink instead of paint, smack yourself hard on both of your ears.

  • Dale Wittig

They’re not claiming that Kenny used the slur, but Charles mutters what sounds like “He looks like a f_g.” Personally, I dislike Barkley as a commentator, but as a Queer I’m not at all offended; though he’s wrong as usual, the guy most definitely doesn’t look at all like a f_g.

  • EJ

@Dale Witting: where do you hear Chuck say he looks like a f@g? I don’t hear it. All I hear is Kenny or Chuck saying he’s dressed like a fan.

  • ClydeSays

Barkley has said some dumb isht in the past, but he just says “FAN” here. Move on, people…

Selective hearing is a hell of a condition. I agree with Heals that people just look to nit pick anything so they can say they’re offended. I think Chuck is a retard but he said fan. Smh

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

He said FAN. Then PAINT. End of story.

  • M@

Who cares? Some gay people do dress like that. They’re not offended I’m sure. It anything, they might be flattered somebody finally noticed…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Flavor Flav is not gay. End of story.

  • das

how about what oneal said? he was talking about barkley kissing and he said like when chuck kissed dick? he meant dick bavetta but if you didnt know better check how that sounds

  • http://slam Linda J,

I heard it live and Kenny said FAN, and Charles then said c’mon man, he’s dressed like a fa## not fan. If you listen to the cadence in his voice, it doesn’t make sense any other way. I heard it. Barkley said it. No question. NBA cares..right. put that in a commercial.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I didn’t hear it. But I would wager Barkley said the slur because most heterosexual men use that slur freely.

  • http://www.xhamster.com Danger Powers

F@6 doesnt mean homosexual anymore anyways.

  • http://kingakai.com Alpha-bet

I was watching it live, it was clear as clean water that he said “Fan”. People need to chill out..

  • greg

at least its not like george zimmerman saying he said “punks” instead of “coon”

  • jay cutler

I guess you could say the people who are offended are

    *puts on sunglasses*

    butthurt fans.

  • ChipS

He clearly said FAN. And then said PAINT. There was no SLUR! Is it, that hard to understand if you listen.

  • andy

lol the dude is wearing a crown! I think the correct word was used here.

  • robb

    Celtics fan. Same thing.

  • Jerome

@shuref00t: waddaya mean by broad? lol

  • MikeC.

I took my dog to the park and my dog ate a sandwich off the ground at the park and there was no mayonnaise on the sandwich so I’m suing you.

  • http://slamonline.com neitel

that fan looked like sacha baron cohen on his new movie The Dictator LOL

  • hillbilly

    @jay cutler “YeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!”

  • PC

when is TNT gonna stop the stupid. seems the Moron wants to weigh in on politics also and state “Romney is going down”.we need to stop Obambie to survive.

  • irondan21

Turn up your audio and you can clearly hear the word “fan.” But you are a f_g if you flipped out over this. People are so soft these days it’s embarrassing.

  • http://www.huwlhopkins.com #6marjon

    this is a non-event

  • Jimschillin

Trying to make something out of nothing.

  • http://abcnews.com charliewinning

Obambie? That’s the best you people can come up with?

  • omm

Fan, then paint, no harm no foul.
Putting on pink makes no sense and has nothing to do with being gay.
