Video: Jay-Z Explains Inspiration Behind Brooklyn Nets Logo

Hov says it was a take off the old NYC subway signs.

Following the announcement of the upcoming “Made In America” music festival, Hov sat down to talk the Nets with MTV’s Rob Markman about the new Nets logo, and the inspiration behind the clean, old-school design. Via MTV.com: “At the end of April, the Brooklyn Nets unveiled their new logo, a Jigga-approved black-and-white crest, which bucks the flash and pizzazz typical of most NBA logos these days. ‘I wanted to make it really classic and strong; a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,’ Jay told MTV News on Monday after his press conference where he announced his upcoming two-day Made in America music festival in Philadelphia. When the NBA’s Seattle Sonics franchise moved to Oklahoma in 2008, the team was rechristened the Oklahoma City Thunder and was branded with a new color-filled logo fit for post-millennium basketball. With this new Nets move, Jay-Z and Nets brass looked to the past in order to ensure the team’s place in the future. Vintage New York transit system signage served as their chief inspiration. ‘It was really a take off the old subway signs, if you look at the old subway signs they were in black and white. It was that strong, beautiful, iconic black and white,’ Jay said. ‘I wanted to pick something that would stand the test of time and be here forever.’”

Meh…their main focus should be to resign their star and improve the team in the offseason.

isn’t hov a minority owner of this team? lol it seems like he’s the mastermind behind every big move this organization makes. people who own like 2% of a team aren’t supposed to have such a big influence on how the organization is ran

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

^designing a logo is considered big influence?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Kay-Z meant to say “the alphabet”

  • theDankerNuggets

Jay-Z has proven he is a marketing genius, this obviously isn’t so much about how much of the team he owns but his track record of marketing everything from his personal brand to Roca to random clothes and liquors in his songs. In his book he explains how much thought he puts behind things like that, and his success has proven how much he understands how to make them work.

People need to understand that Jay Z is like a God in Brooklyn. The Nets would be foolish not to take advantage of his influence. Attach his name to as much things as you can to generate interest and sell merchandise and tickets.

Thinking about it, they should have went with the Yankee color scheme, navy, white and gray. That’s timeless.

  • riggs

It still looks like crap jigga, I could’ve made a better one that looks 100x better. Even with the black/white colorscheme

  • KrispyKreme

Compared to me Jay-Z is lazy.

  • bnets

Awesome logo, and colors, best in the league. Jay Z is pure genius. Love my new Nets gear

There was an inspiration to adding the letter B to the word Nets? I got love for Jay, but keep it real dunn, you just did what the every team does: use the first letter(s) of the city the team represents.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

And btw, I was all for renaming the Nets, the Brooklyn Bullets. I know, it would’ve sounded cliche, stereotypical and even racist to some (F the NY Post), but to real Brooklynites it would’ve been dope, and Washington isn’t using it anymore. Though I think the league had something to do with that. Either way, it would’ve led to interesting uniforms, logos and metaphors on the back pages of the paper.

Woulda been nice to have a PICTURE of tha dayum logo Slam…or am i lookin over it???

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

As a graphic designer, the logo looks like it took 2 minutes. Basic sans serif font in all caps, simple and overused crest shape, oversized basketball, and just a “B” inside it. There’s no focus to the logo, nothing to draw the eye, just looks like a filler for a professional to go over later. Still better than OKC though.

  • http://nyill.wordpress.com/ O

@ Caboose, I know nathans about graphic design, but I think I like the OKC logo better. Or maybe it’s just the colors. Idk…

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

O: Probably colors, that is one thing the OKC logo uses well. The contrasts help, but the font placement and odd lack of centerpiece just make it forgettable.

Anytime anyone uses the word “forgettable” when they talking about something they know, that usually means they passionate about it. I fux with you, Caboose.

  • kobesBESTfriend

i bet he stole this design from some1 else and claimed it as his own like he stole Roca Fella,Kanye, and Roca wear from Dame!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

For one..the colors need to be changed, black-and-white is a little too plain…and two, I could come up with a better logo, and I can’t draw worth a sh*t.

  • http://slamonline.com 19821982

^true, but picking colors and scribbling a logo down isn’t the hard part. Coming up with enough cash to become a minority owner of a pro sports team is…and then making them listen to your input as a minor member of the board.

Yo Caboose. I’m a graphic artist also. Currently having to use Composer here at work. So as you know… FML.

  • Top$helf

Yeah he got tht logo from Dame Dash he had a chain with the same logo but with a “D” not a “B” in the movie Paid in Full

  • white mamba

too plain and simple. could have added another color. or change the color to navy blue and silver or grey.

  • http://Roosterteeth.com Caboose

Oh jeez, I feel your pain man. I learned graphic design on Word, then Paint, then I taught myself photoshop haha. I’m no expert, but yeah, it’s definitely fun. I know you and I can do better than this though.

  • gnailable

Illuminati wanted the logo their way…cuz that s##t’s CRAY!

  • Brad09

to spithotfire who probably has not had much schooling. Yes dumbass logos matter

  • Brad09

It seems almost impossible O actually thinks that the nets should be renamed Bullets. Its people like you that just do not get it. Lol they would say its racist because it is, to brooklynites it would be dope? How ignorant are you? are you 12?
