Carmelo Anthony Teaches Step-Back Jumper to Blake Griffin (VIDEO)

Here’s some awesome footage from a recent Team USA practice in Las Vegas, showing Carmelo Anthony giving Olympic teammate Blake Griffin a free (and extremely valuable) lesson in the art of the step-back jumper.

He should be teaching him how to make a free throw.

  • bdogg

i like the teamwork! like what i see!

  • http://q Flame Heart

Next, he’ll teach him how to hold the ball for the majority of the shot clock.

All blake is trying to do is improve his offense game yet clowns come on here hating talking about how he should work on his FTs. Was Shaq ever a good FT% shooter? Was Wilt ever a good FT% shooter? Is Wade even a good FT% shooter for his position? People just can’t stand watching certain cats prosper.

  • Jono

Melo is sooo smooth. If only he tried on D.

  • http://nba.com I’m J.J. Redickulous

Free throws aren’t offense game? If the dude shot even %70 from the line he could average 28+ points a game.

The cat can “prosper” all he wants. He got paid, I’m not hating.

  • LA Huey

This could be a problem if Blake turns this into a reliable weapon.

  • Sundance

Much better than that post up, between the legs move he does every single game

  • Brandan E.

    now that was great stuff!!
blake needs to improve every part of his game!
and melo is a great shooter so hopefully griffin can learn from him!
if griffin gets that down he can have a inside outside game.
    its all about gettin better!

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

Well I guess neither Shaq or Wilt ever avg. 28ppg in their careers.

  • Roi

I don’t know of many players who dramatically became better shooters as their careers went on. Except for Jordan and Kobe, but IMO both came into the league with pretty good mechanics.

  • http://nba.com I’m J.J. Redickulous

I have no idea what you just said.

  • Niio

J Kidd became an amazing shooter at the end of his career!

  • aotearaw

    I love this.

  • DruNyce

JTaylor – Pot calling the kettle black. You’re a hater too son. Don’t front.

  • Matisse

@ Roi, Amare, Karl Malone, Wade for a good stretch until he became complacent, hell even Dwight’s bank shot from the low post was inexistent in the beginning of his career.

  • Bola

I did not know that envy and jealousy could be this serious. Here is someone you people accused him for not having a all round game. You said he can only dunk, this dude is trying to learn on how to get better and you come on slam and rain insults. I commend him for trying to learn and not feeling he doesn’t need help. Let Blake be.

  • TownRoyal88

Lmao Blake’s step back is so awkward. He really needs to work on his jump shot and handle.

  • T-Money

blake got skills. his handles are already insane, it’s just a matter of time until the jumper gets wet.

  • http://averysmith.pro Avery

Next thing you know you’ll hear how they’ve always wanted to play together, and Blake and Melo will opt-out of their contracts to play for Miami.

  • Billybinet

I love it, I know they should be rivals (Kobe or Jordan would never help anyone gain an edge) but Melo is helping Blake out. if Griffin can do half of what melo does on the perimeter (free throws, jump shot, pull, step back) plus continue his post moves + monster dunks and rebounding he Will be one of the games best statistical players over the next 10-15 years. I am a Kobe Fan all the way but always love watching the NBA’s best ask others for help to improve their game. I love The new LA Rivalry we go nash I bet we either deal for Howard for Bynum now or wait see if LA fans grow impatient personally I Keep bynum and gasol atleast a year Nash is the perfect teammate. Kobe doesnt pass enough Nash does nothing but Pass. Lakers need youth, If ebanks and darius morris step up maybe, but they should dump artest and get a younger wing who can guard the 3,4 so kobe wont have to. LA backcourt is 33 and 38 but they have 2 7 footers waiting Haters Beware Lakers About to put you in a Scare. One l0ve LA always,

    Gotta love the BMore accent.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    I mean Balmer.

  • robb

@DruNyce yeah if it was Kobe teaching Griffin I bet JTaylor would say “he’s teaching him to take 25 shots per game” or something like that

  • justin05

LOL Avery. Melo doesn’t care if he makes Blake better, he knows that the Clippers won’t be playing the Knickerbockers in the finals anytime soon.

  • http://www.nba.com VanCityBBall

Remember when bigs played like bigs? I don’t

  • MeloMan15

shout out to melo.. most guys as taented as him wouldn’t share stuff like this

  • Chukaz

Blake Griffin should teach Melo about fitness. Melo’s arguably one of the best 10 players in the league. He’s probably nowhere near the top ten in muscle definition or size

  • ChipS

You can tell Melo has shed weight. But I could care less about his muscle definition. As long as he buys in and is condition to run up and down the court I’m fine. It’s not like he needs muscle for strength, because he’s strong enough already. I get what your saying tho, he needs to be in better condition shape as that won’t wear his body down as fast. Looks like he’s in better shape right now. So far, so good.

  • underdog

“Man, you don’t look up, you don’t try to pass, you just keep shooting the rock. That’s how I roll!”

  • http://www.twitter.com/Mavus15 Mavus

I’m just thinking about the Clippers coaching staff.. Come on, nobody told Blake to work on pull up & step back jumpers? LMAO!! Why have a coaching staff? The head coach.. but the rest, what do they do? I think it’s sad all these young players have to get some form of development by hiring their own coaches in the off-season.. and the ones that don’t, have to pick it up on the fly.. cause most teams don’t have vets there to teach..

  • jeremys6226

great vid, love the teamwork! Melo is just an offensive animal

  • wixursss

Melo is the Bernard King of today

  • SiMoney

all Melo is trying to do is be a good teammate and teach the young player a step back shot which is extremely resectable on Melos part, yet theres people on here finding ways to criticize Melos D, his fitness, him not passing the ball, Griffins coaching staff, His free throw shooting, shut up and stop hating and appreciate what you just saw…Kobe did that for DRose and nobody hated so let this rock…

  • pposse

what did kobe do for d rose? its usa basketball so im not too mad at melo for helping out blake, but don’t u guys see this trend nowadays in the nba where everyone helps each other out?? It makes it hard to dislike any baller, they all r too damn nice these days!

  • http://www.nba.com/knicks danfields

true that pposse. i miss the 90s knicks days where players had to pay a fine if they helped an “enemy” to stand up lol

  • bike

They didn’t show the clip where Blake was trying to teach Melo the ally oop, off the backboard, tomahawk jam. Melo watched it once, shook his head, and said ‘F*ck that sh*t man. Too much work.’.

  • http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/07/09/morning-tip-free-agency/index.html Allenp

Players who became dramatically better shooters:
Karl Malone. Charles Barkley. Shane Battier. Shawn Kemp. Gary Payton. David Robinson. Hakeem Olajuwon.
And the list goes on. Jump shot is the most commonly added skill in the NBA.

  • LA Huey

As far as this “Kobe would never give his NBA opponents an edge”, he admitted the other day he shared insight and tips with guys on the ’08 team and they now use it against him in the L.

  • http://friendhour.tumblr.com/ cramzy

People flipping on Blake waaaayyyy to early. He just finished his second season. Yall really think he’s not going to improve? Yall mad at 21 & 11?

  • Confused-say!

i really cant tell when you people are serious or not. people saying ish like no one improves their jump shot in their career. people saying blake is doing anything else but progressing. people saying melo doesnt pass. do you guys watch basketball? or do you have that weird strict parent complex, where your expectations are unreasonable and say its because people are not trying hard enough. i cant believe how much i shake my head on this site haha
