Charles Barkley Says He Tried to Recruit Dirk Nowitzki To Auburn (VIDEO)

‘Dude, you can’t go in the army playing like that!’

Dirk Nowitzki hosted a celebrity baseball game in Frisco, TX, over the weekend, and before the game, Charles Barkley told a story about the first time he saw Dirk play. Charles, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and other NBA stars were playing high schoolers during the Nike “Hoop Heroes Tour” in Germany in 1997. Barkley & Co. end up playing against a teenage Dirk in a game where Nowitzki torched (according to Barkley) Pippen for 52 points. Barkley said he was so impressed with Nowitzki that he trying to recruit him to attend Auburn. Of course, Barkley’s efforts were unsuccessful, as Dirk went straight to the L in ’98, bypassing offers from more than 30 colleges.

“I phoned Nike… tell him I give him anything he wants to go to Auburn… so they call.” Uhh… so is the NCAA phoning either Charles or Nike now asking them how heavily they were into paying for players in colleges?

Dirk was really killing ‘em but it was something like 25 points that he scored and not 52. MJ wasn’t there either… AND Chuck forget to mention that Dirk dunked on him, BAD! Wonder what was in Chuck’s cup when he told that story? ;-)

Chuck has always liked Dirk. I think he was trying to say of how good of a player he was back web he was 18. No matter what the case that was a good story and dirk was cracking up behind him as was I while listening.

Firstly, Chuck just opened up a full scale NCAA investigation, and implicated about 20 different parties….Secondly the surest sign of aging is when lack of recollection gives you the liberty to turn any event into an old wise tale of grandiose proportions.
