2012 Rumph Classic Recap (VIDEO)

Starring Thomas Robinson, Marreese Speights, Hakim Warrick and more.

The Danny Rumph Classic is an eight-team double elimination tournament that features a number of NBA players as well as other ballers. It’s named after Danny Rumph, a former Western Kentucky point guard who passed away; his death was caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart disease that also took the lives of Hank Gathers and Reggie Lewis. Rumph was playing a pick-up game in a Philadelphia when it happened.

The team that won the tournament—Show Ya Love—featured pros Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington and Dionte Christmas. Thomas Robinson, Marcus Morris, Markieff Morris, Hakim Warrick and Rasual Butler also participated. Check highlights of the action above.

This was a great event. I just recently joined the Board of DER Foundation and I’m so excited by what they have been able to accomplish in just 7 years. I loved the basketball tourney! It was so cool seeing our neighborhood (and many others from surrounding areas) come out to Arcadia & the Rumph Center to enjoy the games and welcome the players. Our Rumph Center players did us proud! Both venues were jumpin’ from start to finish.

I can’t wait for next year! By the way, the Foundation that puts on this great event helps the community & families in and around Philly in lots of other ways. You can check out the website, if you get a minute: http://www.deriifoundation.org/ SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

The Rumph Classic has come a long way and keeps getting better and better every year. I can’t imagine how we’ll top this years tournament. Congrats to the entire DER II Foundation for staging a fabulous event and thanks to all the sponsors. Every baller in Philly was represented, both Ole Skool and New, on the court and off. The Rumph Classic is Definitely the place to be, can’t wait until August 2013. Don’t forget, it’s ALL about the Kids and “Saving the Next Bright Star”. Kudos!
