Draft Day With Royce White (VIDEO)

A moment-by-moment journey with the newest member of the Houston Rockets.

Here is a short film by Jonathan Hock, a talented director and longtime friend of SLAM. In this piece for Grantland, Hock and his crew spent 24 hours with Iowa State forward Royce White on the day of the NBA Draft. We’re taken behind the scenes into White’s world, which is as complex and intriguing as ever. White is an incredibly talented NBA prospect, yet, as the film depicts, grapples with his generalized anxiety disorder on a daily basis.

Royce is awesome. Already my favourite rookie in the League.

Very eloquent. Enunciates clearly. Very impressive.

What? You are impressed easily or your just racist.

That was awesome, I’m so glad the Rockets drafted this guy. Anxiety disorders are a lot more common than people think–he’s by no means alone. Either way, he’ll be fine. I’m pretty sure he’s neither the first nor the last NBA player to have an anxiety problem. OCD is also an anxiety disorder.

What does dude’s color have to do with Hursty’s comment? He’s just sayin’ he’s a very well spoken human, which he is.

Hmm, the amount of bad risks NBA teams make, to see them all passing on Royce White with their late first round picks, was a little depressing. I was extremely surprised to find out that Boston would have passed on him with BOTH of their picks… DAMN. I still think he should have been knocking on a Top 10 draft position. He’s for sure better than Ross and Waiters. Not to sound ignorant but will he ever get over his fear of flying? Like if he manages to push past those first ten flights, will it get easier for him and become less of an issue? I don’t really know much about his disorders, so I guess I am a little ignorant but…

that last shot reminds me of that one scene from ’2001: a space odessy’..

SO good. I’m rooting for Royce and Jon Hock and his crew are the BEST.

Oh, and how many star NBA players can express themselves without saying “uh, um, aaaand, like” every second sentence. I’d be impressed with White’s language regardless of his colour or profession. You’re a fool.
