Rudy Gay Beats Denver Nuggets on Game-Winner (VIDEO)

F***ing Rudy Gay, man.

This is the second game-winning shot in Rudy Gay’s short career in Toronto to date. The Raptors appear to have found themselves a pretty good closer. Per the Globe and Mail: “Just six games into his new surroundings Gay is more than living up to the hype. Tuesday night against a rapid-fire Denver Nuggets team, the game did not exactly go the way Toronto or Gay wanted it to with their big triggerman on the bench for long stretches after getting into early foul trouble. But Gay was on the floor when it counted, with the seconds winding down and the Nuggets clinging to a one-point lead. [...] ‘He’s a big time player, he’s a closer,’ gushed Dwane Casey, the Raptors coach after his team won for the third straight outing. ‘His role card, it will be all across the front of it – closer. He’s done it his whole career.’ [...] Gay started the fourth quarter on the floor with the Raptors clinging to an 82-79 lead, but was forced back to the bench less than three minutes in after picking up his fifth personal foul. After that the game turned into a slugfest, with backup point guard John Lucus providing critical offence off the bench, connecting on four straight three-point shots to help the Raptors maintain the lead. ‘John came in a gave us a big time spark,’ conceded Casey, and it was one of the reason why he was able to keep Gay on the bench for as long as he could. He didn’t check back in until there was 4:50 left on the clock with the Raptors leading 100-96 and Gay said the wait on the bench was excruciating for him. ‘My hands were sweating, I couldn’t stop moving my legs,’ he said. ‘Yeah, I was itching [to get back into the fray].’”

Rudy Gay dose it again! #letsgoraptors!

  • pposse

very nice shot by Gay, but I’m shocked that the Raptors held the ball for so long. Down by one with 20 seconds and you don’t even make a move to the bucket until the 8 second mark?? Crazy play calling, but it worked.

  • bravo

The reason being is cuz we got Rudy Gay now.

hit the game anther shot like that against pacers the other week i think it was

    Raptors finally have a closer.

    @max…

  • spit hot fiyah

how does the oppsing coach not prepare his team for rudy gay taking a couple of strong dribbles to his right before elevating for the J? force him left or send the double

  • Max

Yup, you knew it was coming. And I agree, you have to send him left.

  • spit hot fiyah

it’s exactly rockets science. props to rudy though for always getting to his spot and getting a good look

Why is it crazy play calling? You want to make the shot to go ahead with as little time left on the clock as possible. It reduces the chance of the opposing team running a solid play.

  • Lloyd

I get to keep saying it…we definitely won off that 3 team trade.

i wonder if raptor fans feel like they finally got their IT guy

    i would think so.

  • pposse

i would be more concerned with scoring a bucket, and if I don’t score to have enough time to get an offensive rebound and attempt another shot.

What happened in this clip imo is what normally happens when a game is tied up, and not when your down a point.

Raptors fans are so happy right now….only way they could be happier is if Bargs gets shipped off

we will see….you guys might be stuck as 7-8 seeds because of the lack of financial flexibility…i guess if that’s a win tho…

  • Lloyd

The basket went in with 4 seconds left. That would’ve been enough time for a tip in or an long offensive board and a shot. Worst case scenario is you miss and foul to stop the clock. Any team with a closer would play it the same.

going off of what pposse said…you are only down 1…if you miss then you need time to foul and come down and tie the game up.

  • pposse

Really? I always thought the general rule is if your down, you try and extend the game, if your tied then last shot, or if your ahead run out the clock.

  • Youngindy21

Rudy Gay is a great closer but he is not really a superstar or an IT guy. If he was an IT guy Memphis wouldn’t have let him go.

  • Lloyd

I disagree. You use as much time as you can to set up the offence, run a set play, and get a good look. If you score the go ahead bucket with 10 seconds left, you’re giving the opposing team the time to do exactly what you just did. Hit the shot with less time, there’s less time for an organized play, as evidenced by Ty Lawson heaving up a wild runner from the elbow yesterday.

  • Lloyd

You need less than a second to get off a shot and by that point it’s a desperation 3 anyway.

I’m still having a hard time accepting that the Nuggets lost to the Raptors last night, but now I’m interested to see how they respond against the Nets tonight. Unfortunately I’m working a late shift at DISH tonight, so I can’t watch the game live. I have my DISH Hopper set to record all the Nuggets games this season though and love that it can store up to 2,000 hours of entertainment to hold all of them.
