LeBron James Picks the 3 Greatest Players: Jordan, Dr. J and Bird (VIDEO)

With Magic at fourth.

Asked by Fox Sports to name his top 3 NBA players of all time, LeBron James picked Michael Jordan, Julius Erving and Larry Bird. He felt guilty about leaving Magic Johnson off the list, so LBJ expanded it.

Rarely hear guys mentioned Dr. J that high on the list, but it’s simply about taste and how you enjoy seeing the game be played. Asking for just 3 is tough though given how many great players have played.

  • i_ball

I love the Akron hat. I guess LeBron likes wing players more than post ones.
I think people shouldn’t to name less than 10 and in no particular order.

  • Wilt Chamberlain

Where the hell am I on this list?

  • Dfrance

Well you’re not 4th, thats for sure.

  • D_Nuggets

Wilt Chamberlain talking to us from the afterlife? I have so many questions! Like how’s the internet connection over there?

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange gets the feeling Kareem Abdul Jabbar won’t be helping The Kang with his hook shot anytime soon.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

obviously LeBron looks at the rankings a lot differently then normal people.

  • Enigmatic

For a second there I thought he was gonna say “Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan. Cause he spit hot fire.”

  • pposse

and this was the bright guy that should have ran the players association

  • Stepfan Raiford

Dang top 3!!!!? How about top 5

  • robb

It’s funny how choosing the best, the greatest and your favorite players can affect the outcome. For example my favorite players are MJ, Magic and Kobe, I think the best players are MJ, Lebron and Hakeem and the greatest players (IMO) are MJ, Bill Russell and Kareem.

I think Lebron had a hard time choosing the greatest because you always wanna get your favorite players in your top 3 but at the same time you know you have to choose the best and the greatest.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

??? How does him giving his opinion on something that is just a matter of opinion anyhow show any kind of stupidity from him? So if he had said the 3 names you wanted him to say, would you have made this comment?

  • pposse

because that opinion sucks and is probably not shared by anyone else in the league or anywhere. He was asked who the best three players of all time are..not his favorite players of all time. He can’t distinguish favorite from best. I wouldn’t have made the comment if anyone in the world even agreed to two of his top 3. Putting Bird in your top 3 is wild enough, and then Dr. J? Thats stupid. My top 5 goes like this

    MJ
    Bill Russell
    Kareem
    Wilt
    Magic
    - If you swap out Magic with Bird then fine Bird is in the top 5, but top 3? Thats is crazy.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

What’s crazy is you continuing your little hangup with James and the Heat just because he didn’t sign with the Bulls in 2010. You explicitly stated that if he were in Chicago, you wouldn’t have a word to say about him that was negative. Which means anything you say after that is obviously out of hurt feelings. He can say whatever he wants to say just like anyone else can when they’re asked about who the best 3 players ever are. Just because you don’t like him, doesn’t mean he can’t state his opinion.

Opinions don’t have to be shared at all. When it’s something that’s not concrete as it is with the best players in the history of the NBA, he can say whatever he wants to say just as any other player can say any 3 names they wish to say out of the legendary players.

  • pposse

Whats more crazy is your continuous psycho analysis.

“if he were in Chicago, you wouldn’t have a word to say about him that was negative” – Hasty Generaliztion. So if Lebron played for the Bulls and then admitted that he eats children I wouldn’t say anything negative about him?

Like i said before, no one in the world shares Lebron’s opinion of the three greatest. You know why? Cause its a stupid opinion!

  • pposse

to be fair though, as a kid i used to put Dr. J in my top players of all time..you know why? Cause MJ used to say how that was his favorite player and who he blueprinted his game after.

  • willi billy

i agree with him except for the larry bird and magic thing.
i think magic is 3rd and larry is 4th.
but mj 1st and julius 2nd is my opinion, too.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

Everyone knows your angle with James and the Heat. When people can predict what you’re going to say, we know what the deal is. It’s your prerogative obviously, but it’s just funny to sit back and laugh at when you upvote every comment made about him that’s meant to tease or knock him and you come up with some on your own.

Great way to avoid admitting what you said…come up with some extreme situation that has absolutely nothing to do with basketball. You said you wouldn’t have said anything about the Heat being one of the reasons why there was a lockout if he had signed with the Bulls.

No one has to share his opinion because it’s his and his alone. Just like everyone else has opinions that others may not agree with. Doesn’t make it stupid, just different. And let’s not act like others don’t think that Larry Bird was/is worthy of being talked about as being one of the top 5 players ever. Dr. J is the only one he mentioned that most don’t say is a top 3 guy. But saying Bird isn’t wild or crazy. And given the impact Dr. J had on the game, I can see why someone would say he’s top 3.

  • LakeShow

Dr. J doesn’t deserve to be in that top 3 list common LBJ!

  • TR

How many teams were in the nba when Russell won those 11 rings? I think some of the winning loses a little mustard for me since there were only 8-12 teams during his playing career

  • shockexchange

If Horry Jr had played during Doc’s era, he would’ve gotten his ____ handed to him. Real talk Lake.

  • Busta213

It would be interesting to know if he had reasons behind those picks, or if his mind went blank and he just went with the first 2 names he could think of outside of MJ’s.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

he doesn’t judge it like you do. or i do. or any normal basketball fan does. obviously, his is about their game, not necessarily what they did with it.

  • Evan Boland

Get on that Lebron defense bro! I was waiting for you.. Hahahaha. His opinion is WRONG. MAN. Get a LIFE.

  • Evan Boland

Dude, this guy will defend his king at all costs. Don’t bother. He’s just a d*ck rider.

  • LakeShow

Does Bob Horry even have a son?

If he did, my bet is he too could have average 17 rebounds per game in the 70′s ABA…

  • Ishmael Jenkins

Still haven’t come up with a thought all on your own worth paying attention to, I see.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

Get your own mind and stop riding other people’s coattails, co-signing other people’s opinions and not presenting any ideas on your own. Basically, be a man.

  • spit hot fiyah

that would have worked better for top five, trust me i know, but still….

  • spit hot fiyah

he is no nbk, that’s for sure

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

LOL, i am not normal people either

  • Evan Boland

If your idea of a man is to stalk these boards waiting for someone to say something negative about your man. His opinion is as boneheaded as his decision. And his ability to disappear when his team needs him most.

  • Evan Boland

Why do you even respond to this guy?

  • bike

Regardless of who he thinks are the top 3, it’s an established fact that LeBron’s receding hair line is the result of global warming.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

lol Won’t find too many people still crying about The Decision. And you talk about him disappearing still like it’s June 2011. Join us in 2013 where he now has 2 championships along with 2 Finals MVP awards and 2 more regular season MVP awards. Keep embarrassing yourself. If you had any sense at all, you’d see that I comment on quite a lot of articles about so many different players and all I do is present perspective. But if you’d like to keep being foolish, go ahead.

  • LakeShow

    Boredom.

  • Evan Boland

I just find it funny how you defend Lebron like he’s your homie. Give credit where it’s due. He’s one of the all-time greats, had one of the greatest seasons ever. Amazing game 7. But.. He’s a bonehead. No need to defend his shitty opinion of the three greatest. Sit down, boy. Lebron doesn’t need you to have his back. DR.J as top 3, cannot be defended. It’s a joke. Like you defending LJ no matter what.

  • Evan Boland

Coming from the guy who just goes with what the conforming public opinion is at the time. I don’t see anyone else arguing you and your butt buddies belief that because you all share the exact same opinion means you are correct.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

“Butt buddies” lol. Too dense to talk without juvenile name-calling…trying to sound cool to someone here or what? What you should do is wonder why hardly anyone ever agrees with you. There’s a reason for it. Take your time. Figure it out.

  • pposse

I take winning over stats any day. I understand this argument your present and i can’t fault the logic behind it. its just the winning for me is the biggest factor and holds 2* more weight than stats etc.

With that being said, Wilt is up there cause i mean damn 50 pts and 20 rebs in a season is too ridiculous. There is not words to explain that to me.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

    Read a book.

  • Evan Boland

Because you guys blindly follow the common narrative of the year? Me and LakeShow both had Kobe at 4th this year, same opinion. I share the opinion of most on this board with LJ as probably the second greatest of all-time. One of the fools, nbk I think, actually tried to argue CP3 over Kobe because he received more MVP votes. I lol’d.

  • pposse

He won’t accept that you believe Lebron is an all time great.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

And as for opinions…you are a commenter on a website…he’s in the NBA and is already being talked about as one of the top 10 in the history of the league…out of you two, who is really more prone to have a “sh*tty opinion” about who the best 3 players ever are?

  • Evan Boland

Some people get like that when it comes to their idols. They become blinded to any plausible criticism.

  • Evan Boland

Okay, so let’s bring up all the NBA greats who believe Kobe > Lebron. Magic believes Kobe is the best Laker of all-time, as does Shaq and Jerry. I was actually going to bring that up, but I was going to cop out like that. MJ said Kobe > Lebron. Rodman said Lebron would be “average” in the 90′s. So… yeah lol.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

nbk is a fool too? Yeah, I’ll let him handle that if he sees this. But before that, LeBron James as the 2nd greatest player ever is foolish too. He’s top 10-15 now. But 2nd? No. And most people here don’t believe that. So you’re probably on your own with that too.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

I can bring up greats who say LeBron > Kobe. So that’s not really a big deal.

  • pposse

Thats a stretch…it might be true..but to me he is just listing his favorite players and Larry Bird (who could be his favorite player) but really his only competition as the best SF ever. But for him to not put Kareem in there and instead put Dr. J is disrespectful (stephen a voice).

He’s an 80′s baby like me if he would just said MJ, Bird, Magic the list would have sounded just fine…growing up in that generation i can say and im sure you can attest to it too that most put those guys as the 3 greatest ever.

  • Katie G.

    MICHAEL JORDAN (M.J.)
    JULIUS ERVING (Dr. J.)
    ALLEN IVERSON (THE ANSWER)

    ~IN THAT ORDER~

  • Evan Boland

Exactly.. And they would be correct. But if you can follow, that’s not my point. I guess my point went over your head.

  • Ishmael Jenkins

My point is that if anyone has a sh*tty opinion, it’s not the guy who is the best player in the league now and has access to all of the legendary players he was asked about. It’s probably the dude who is known for saying some pretty idiotic stuff on this website…you.

  • pposse

yup and lose site on what being “objective” really is.

  • spit hot fiyah

thanks for clarifying which michael jordan, julius erving and allen iverson you meant

like i said, it’s about their game. not about what they did with it.

    .

Kareem’s accomplishments are what make him better than Julius. Statistically, for what position Julius played …. http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/pcm_finder.cgi?request=1&sum=1&p1=ervinju01&y1=1984&p2=abdulka01&y2=1985
    .
it’s not a huge gap between them.

  • Junior Taylor

It continues to amaze me that KAJ continues to be disrespected and ignored by the majority of basketball fans when it comes to all-time rankings. One would think that the League’s greatest scorer (by a comfortable margin) and 3rd greatest rebounder would garner more respect and adulation. I consider myself to be in the minority when it comes to fully understanding just how dominant and special Kareem’s career was.

  • robb

    true

  • Mack

I find it EXTREMELY ironic that LeBron has Magic over Bird. LeBron is Magic Johnson 2.0.

  • CKLOH

    Hier, hier.

  • Shock exchange

    I’m gay

  • Kenneth Simkins

He Forgot Magic Johnson! He just might be the greatest!

  • Daryl Morey

nobody roots for goliath, I guess.

    PS: Lakeshow mad.

  • Guest

Larry Bird averaged 24, 10 and 6 for his career. He was a BETTER player than Magic individually. Period. Magic’s only advantage was passing and to be honest it wasn’t that far of an advantage. Bird is the best passing forward ever. Still is. If the Celtics had given him a bench past ’86 he wins at least another ring. The Lakers always had more depth.

  • Guest

Winning is the result of TEAMS. Winning titles is a matter of circumstance and luck in addition to talent.

Despite his signature sky hook, he just didn’t seem like a charismatic guy. And people do rate based on how much they like a player (how else you going to do it, by stats? That’s no fun). This guy’s longevity and impact on the league is very underrated. He was good and he was a winner.

I hate these kind of discussions because people think basketball was invented in 1980. First, to ignore Bill Russell means the conversation should come to a close. Secondly, MJ is clearly on that list. Now it gets dicey. I’m torn between three super greats – Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Magic. I lean toward Oscar. How any rings a player has alone does not justify the designation. That depends too much on your surrounding cast. Does Kobe have 5 rings without Shaq? I doubt it. You want to have players who had a great impact on the game. You can easily list 10 players for that list so picking 3 is certainly a personal preference. How can you leave out Chamberlain, Shaq, Duncan, Bird, J. West, K. Bryant, and ‘The Iceman’ Gervin.
