Derrick Rose Returns (VIDEO)

Playing for the first time in 525 days, Derrick Rose served a reminder to the hoops world as to why he was so badly missed last season. Rose finished with 13 points in 21 minutes last night, in an 82-76 Chicago Bulls preseason win over the Indiana Pacers. Per the Chicago Sun-Times: “Well, it was good to have him back, for sure,’ Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. ‘I think you see how he makes the game easier for everybody and the speed at which he plays, you’ve got to get accustomed to that, too. So his teammates have to get used to that again. He has to get used to it, but overall, I thought he played very, very well. Some rust, but that’s to be expected.’ Rose played 20:26, scoring 13 points on 5-for-12 shooting, 3-for-5 from the free throw line, had three assists and then of course, the four turnovers. But what stood out was the aggressiveness he had, going right at Indiana’s bigs with an almost reckless abandon. ‘I’m used to playing aggressive and that’s not going to stop me, me getting fouled or getting the and-one,’ Rose said. ‘I’m not slowing down, I don’t care who is in the hole or whatever. If they’re going to foul me hard, I’m just going to get up and keep going hard at them. That’s what I’m trying to get used to.’ Pacers center Roy Hibbert found that out in the second quarter, as Rose attempted to go right at the rim against him, drawing the foul. ‘Again, like we’ve been seeing it in practice,’ Thibodeau said. ‘He’s hit the floor, he’s been aggressive and that’s the way he played before the injury and he’s back to playing like that. And for him, that’s his game — the speed, the quickness, but the power to go along with it. That’s what makes him so special and unique. There’s no one like him.’ As for the knee, Rose called it a non-issue. He said he never thought about it and he claimed his vertical jump is now five inches higher than it was when he first came into the league. Rose claimed all week that his confidence was at an all-time high, and he played like a guy with no fear. ‘I’ve been preparing myself for this moment for a year and a half now,’ Rose said. ‘I felt great, felt normal.’”

Miami is in trouble. Which of their 30 year olds is going to check him when Bron needs a breather?

  • Conor

If he still can’t shoot consistently at this point, who cares if he’s regained even 8/10ths of his athleticism?

  • D

Can we please turn that 2k14 ad off god damn that’s annoying

  • Dundler

Looks better than I thought he would. There is no way someone his size should be able to still get a shot off after going into Hibbert like that. Such athleticism

  • spit hot fiyah

it’s been like 4 days, they haven’t figured out how to do it

  • spit hot fiyah

    bron needs breathers?

  • anon

“His vertical is now 5 inches higher” …daaaayymn! the league is on notice.

  • RKJ92

Miami has the best defensive PG tandem in the NBA, I’m pretty sure even IF Bron’ needed a breather they wouldn’t be sweating it too much man..

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Lol they are getting paid every time that ad goes off. If it doesn’t stop you from doing anything other than complain? They will let it play out.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Because he proved to be able to shoot consistently 3 years ago

  • Nick Holden

A 5 inch improvement of is vertical? That sounds ridiculous. Should probably be taken with a grain of salt though, like the 15-25 pounds off-season muscle gains we always hear about

  • pposse

norris cole or mario chalmers has 0 chance against a healthy d rose. Rose is probably even more motivated if Chalmers is guarding him too.

  • NotLivingInThePast

    ads? lol
That takes 1 min to change

  • i_ball

He looks ready to go – making the same play that led to the injury. Both conferences are stacked – there are at least 10 teams with a shot of going to the Finals – Spurs, Thunder, Clips, Grizz, Rockets, Warriors, Heat, Pacers, Bulls, Nets. I know some of them are really long shots but if most of the players are healthy the season will be awesome!

  • Anthony Darnello Taylor Jr.

Ahhh college rivalries, storylines….this is one reason why the NBA and NCAA will be butt buddies forever lmao jp

  • The Seed

Best player in the NBA, RETURNS.

  • Conor

    Really?

    TS%=.534 / EFG%=.486

And his field goal percentages have actually worsened since he entered the League… having said that, he apparently has added five inches to his vertical, post-recovery, so my initial question is moot. He’ll be able to scythe his way through defences and dominate, even without a consistent exterior game.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Yeah, that’s the thing with developing a jumper….you start to use it more. And your jumper is never going to be as much of a weapon as your ability to finish at the rim when you are that athletic….let’s just try and put 2 and 2 together.
    .
More lower % shots =’s …. A lower FG %? That would make sense

  • uway

Funniest joke on Slam all month. Lebron haters are pathetic.

  • BugEyes

pavers better hope they don’t me chi.town in the playoffs

  • Dagger

This makes me incredibly happy as a fan of basketball. There aren’t many players who mean more to the league than Derrick Rose.

  • Caboose

LeBron is the closest to athletic perfection that we’ve seen in the League since Wilt. Dude is just ridiculous.

  • fruizm

    huh?

  • Conor

What are you talking about? His field goal percentage has receded from 48% when he was a rookie to 43% as recently as 2012. Just because his three-pointer has become average does not constitute disconsideration of what the grand layout of his offensive game is. Clearly five attempts per game is too many. Unless Chicago has modernity’s 2001 Philly Run and Rose cuts back on his threes, they won’t reach the Finals.

While Rose has been in the same league of playoff players in the East as LeBron James and Rajon Rondo since 2011 – or, at least he was prior to his injury – much of that success is thanks to Thibodeau’s masterful coaching and his teammates’ superior help defence. While he advances them possibly to the E.C.S.F. this postseason, if he does not add a consistent three-pointer to secure a release valve against the élite Eastern defences in Indiana, Miami, and Brooklyn, they won’t be capable advancing past the E.C.F. until he does so completely healthily.

  • Conor

*cuts back on his threes and has developed a back-to-the-basket post game

  • Conor

LeBron doesn’t guard the opposition’s best player all game… right, to conserve his offence. James can’t keep up with players like Rose, Rondo, Wall, Westbrook, etc. and dominate offensively, all game.

James has certainly inherited Jordan’s mythic “from tip-off to the final buzzer” hyperboles. He’s the best or second-best player in the NBA, but c’mon.

  • Conor

One that’s really funny is Richard Hamilton’s and Kobe’s. Bryant got the high school state championship, but Hamilton one-upped that banner with an NCAA championship which was usurped by Kobe’s first NBA title when he was 21. But Hamilton had the last laugh, thus far, in 2004.

  • Conor

    Are you joking?

  • spit hot fiyah

the fist day when i complained the moderator said sorry we are working on it. yes they get paid for it to play, i doubt the sound is necessary though

  • Interdico Scriptor

    dude… you rock

  • Interdico Scriptor

    Kobe’s laughed since then

  • BugEyes

The pacers(who are suppose to dethrone the heat) don’t want to see the bulls in the playoffs, they wear them out all the time.

  • Dagger

    “He’s the best or second-best player in the NBA . . .”

Does anyone at all think he’s second-best?

  • Chubachuchi

First off, the whole Bulls defense is great, not just their help D. Secondly, you’re clearly a DRose hater if you didn’t see his value for the Bulls in 2011 or as it seems the present and the near future.

Yes we have quality players and Thibs has become an elite coach, but Rose is by far the most valuable asset for any Chicago finals hopes. Thibs in 2011, if you watched closely, wasn’t very “masterful”, as you say, in offensive creativity. Rose was clearly, and will be, the lifeblood of the offense, PRIMARILY with his driving, in which he’s in a different class. His driving opens up everything for the offense and without Rose in 2011 the Bulls were stagnant in scoring, sometimes downright terrible. With him back, Chi is a whole ‘nother beast.

His fg% has gotten worse because he’s been taking more shots each year, and yes, he shoots midrange and outside. His midrange is actually exceptional and his 3 is improving but they will never replace his driving. He shoots because it’s a good idea for a player to mix it up, especially if defenses are trying to pack his sh*t everytime he drives in. You also contradict yourself when you say his 3 pointer has become average but then later call it inconsistent, which 1 is it?

Oh and by the way stop with the pretentious writing we’re on a basketball forum. (Allen Iverson voice)

  • Chubachuchi

Oh and don’t forget he’s only 25. That jumper will keep improving. And you know what? With the work he put in shooting the last year and a half he could already be a very good shooter this season.

  • Lloyd

You’re bringing up the 2011 season. I don’t think he’s doubting DRose’s value to the Bulls. He said they could get as far as the ECF. But he’s right when he says Rose’s offensive game needs to expand. Just look what the Heat did to him in the 2011 ECF. After the Bulls game 1 win, they shut him down. He only had one decent game after that. 1) He can’t be limited to driving and finishing around the hoop with a defence like Miami’s 2.) The offence can’t just be him scoring.

  • Chubachuchi

I brought up 2011 because he did. And in that season he says the main reasons why Rose was considered great are Thibs and Chicago’s D. So I told him Rose’s value during that season and the future. I agree with your 2 statements. That’s why I’m excited this season because first of all he’s back, and we have a solid team defensively and offensively.

  • blue&orange

Acknowledging someone as the best doesn’t qualify as d!ckriding unless you’re a 12 year old upset that your favorite player keeps losing to said best player. You fit the mold.

Second best in what league? Oh, right you’re a Kobe stan

    Welcome back, DRose.

  • bringbackthesonics

He was quick, fast and powerful and at 7 foot to have all of those attributes is just amazing. If he had half of Kobe’s work ethic he would’ve dominated the league for a decade or more

  • Max

I wasn’t talking about acknowledging Bron is the best, everyone s
    knows that’s true.
It’s more about the getting super defensive right away.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yeah he said that, but i doubt he was really being 100% truthful. i bet 2k paid a good sum for them to play that everytime someone opened a SLAM page for a week, so they just acted like they were trying to get rid of it, instead of saying, “it’ll be gone Monday morning”

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

what do you mean what am i talking about?
    .
i think it’s clear what i just said to you. his jumper is better. but that doesn’t make it better than his ability to finish at the rim. so if he shoots more jumpers than he used to, well, his FG % will drop.
    .
that and in the last 2 seasons he played, he led the league in attempts with less than 5 seconds on the shot clock…..so there is that.

  • bball knowledge

Hakeem Olajuwon came before Lebron aswell.

    To Kevin Durant, champ.

Shaq’s vertical and sprint were lacking. LeBron literally has everything. Wilt was LeBron’s athleticism, just pumped up everywhere.

    YES!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

you are freaking drunk. Shaq was (other than David Robinson) the quickest and fastest Center in the league when he was young. Once he got over 300lbs he slowed a bit, but at 300lb’s he was still basically LeBron.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    that is just false.

compared to Hakeem and Ewing nope.

Put your urban dictionary away if you don’t properly know how to use terms. D!ckriding would be me commenting on every Lebron post biggin him up every time. Rose also needs to play off-the-ball a bit more. If his jumper is clicking at a higher clip this season, Chicago would be well-served to use that strategy to tire assignments like the LeBron Jameses and Dwyane Wades and Tony Allens of the League out more quickly/limit their involvement with covering him throughout the game.

Rose isn’t exactly Bryant or Durant or Paul as a bail-out option (though that does explain some of the 43%).

  • Conor

I complimented Rose on his 2011 run, lmao. Get those horns out of your eyes.

  • Conor

    As do you, sir.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

let me address the end first,

“exactly” — ok, lol, now that we got that covered.
    .
it’s hard to take the ball out of his hands, even if he is a bit more efficient without it as a shooter, he’s still the best option to create shots for himself and everyone else. i think the lower efficiency is acceptable with everything else he does for everyone else. he really opens the game up.

  • Conor

Definitely. All I’m saying is Rose could benefit from a slower-paced, cerebral game more often than his Wade-esque forays to the rim. If Boozer suddenly becomes a 20-10 player again (or is trade for one), then the route will be much simpler, but I believe Rose and Deng working as Chicago’s primary playmakers – with Deng (should he not be traded) being given a larger role – would be much better for them than feeding Boozer as often.

Ultimately, I just don’t want Miami to win a third, haha. Chicago, Indiana, Brooklyn, OKC, Memphis, (ugh) the Clippers – or, ideally, the Lakers – could win for all I care, as long as it isn’t Miami. A Clippers win would probably inspire the Lakers to give it a maniacal run next season anyway, so that may even be good, considering today’s odds for June.

  • Conor

    *is traded

Are we talking about Magic Shaq or Lakers Shaq? because those are two different animals.

Shaq was more athletic when he was with Orlando but when he went to Los Angeles he was much bigger and stronger.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

It’s the same person, he just weighed more in LA. But for a guy that size, he was extremely extremely athletic.

  • 23

I was thinking the same thing. I smell bs.

  • Conor

They didn’t have to play Rondo or Rose for most of last season. Statistically skewed!

  • bball knowledge

  • Chubachuchi

“While Rose has been in the same league of playoff players in the East as LeBron James and Rajon Rondo since 2011 – or, at least he was prior to his injury – much of that success is thanks to Thibodeau’s masterful coaching and his teammates’ superior help defence.”

Attributing Thibs and Chicago’s help D as bigger factors than Rose in their 2011 conference finals run isn’t really a compliment or true. Your writing is very easy to keep up with btw

  • Conor

“(M)uch of that success” in the same manner that Miami’s supporting/help defence allows James to hide his individual defensive flaws. Again, take those horns out of your eyes. Basketball is a team sport. Chicago is already an excellent team, & Rose simply adds the greatest amount of offensive fuel to it of any Bull. It’s as simple as that. No need to be insulted, you imbecile.

You are the only one who seems to think it isn’t true.

  • Chubachuchi

How was I insulted? lol You’re the tissue roll here. When did I say Rose is the end all be all of the Bulls? I was pointing out what Rose does for the team- that is, elevating them to another level- is a bigger factor than Thibs coaching or the Bulls help D. Remember they advanced last year after beating a dysfunctional Nets.

  • Conor

Now you’re agreeing with me again?…

How could you possibly belittle the rest of Chicago’s contributions? You can’t dismiss the absence of LUOL DENG and several others. Are you joking? You must not even be a fan of Chicago. Nothing other than a Derrick Rose fan.

Good God, even as a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, I understand Kobe Bryant’s benefits and needs for improvement. C’mon.

  • Chubachuchi

Explain how I’m agreeing with you…..
And I’m a Bulls fan. A Bulls homer. I only missed like 6 Bulls games last year. I know how good the Bulls are without Rose. Everyone also knows what kind of team they are with Rose healthy.

Basketball is a team sport. That goes without saying. What I’m talking about here is that Rose is the greatest asset in Chicago for the Bulls, not Thibs, and not the help D. Of course those two are great factors in the overall success of Chicago, but they are not as great as Rose’s presence. This is my point.

  • Conor

When you repeat another’s argument as your own, that is known as “accordance”.

Really? Chicago with Rose and a mediocre coach/teammates would be a 45-in team. That isn’t exactly impressive in the East. In other words: you would be objectively and thoroughly incorrect if that’s your case.

  • Chubachuchi

What argument of yours did I repeat? lol. And with what evidence can you support your claim that a Rose led team without quality teammates/coach is mediocre?
