Greg Oden Plays and Dunks in First Game Since 2009 (VIDEO)

by Marcel Mutoni @ marcel_mutoni

Miami Heat center Greg Oden made his long-awaited debut for the defending NBA champions, and the big fella wasted little time making his mark felt.

The emphatic dunk, Oden’s first basket in nearly four years, was greeted with wild cheers from his teammates, and the euphoria continued well past the 108-95 preseason win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

Per the Miami Herald:

Oddly enough, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra wouldn’t allow reporters to interview Oden during the morning’s shootaround session and also dodged questions about whether Oden had been scrimmaging with the Heat in the last week. The reason for Spoelstra’s coyness became obvious after a timeout in the second quarter when Oden replaced Shane Battier in the lineup. Oden’s first appearance with the Heat came alongside (Chris) Bosh in the frontcourt. Also in the lineup with Oden were Mario Chalmers, Ray Allen and LeBron James. “Welcome back G.O.,” Heat owner Micky Arison tweeted after Oden’s stint in the second quarter.

Pat Riley, who spoke in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Tuesday evening, attended the Heat’s shootaround on Wednesday morning in New Orleans. “It was really great to see, his first game since 2009,” Riley said of Oden’s debut. “It was just a really great confidence builder for him. He’s not in shape yet but he’s getting there. We just have to keep him healthy.” [...] “In December it will be four years, so four minutes is enough for me,” Oden said. “As long as I got out there and I walked off and I’m healthy that’s all that matters. Next step for me is coming in tomorrow and making sure everything is taken care of with my legs and making sure it gets back to where it feels good. And then I’ll be out there another game.”

Greg Oden played just three minutes and 59 seconds last night, but the simple fact that he was able to get out there and hoop was more than enough.

It’s an encouraging first step for the star-crossed center, and makes the NBA’s best team even scarier.

he dunked, it was impressive but i can’t help but just stare at his knees when he plays. The right one looked all shaky still, literally cringe every time he touches the ball.

  • ATL dynamite

Way to go mate, all the best!

  • Blarmac

Good to see he has teammates giving him positive support.

  • Anthony

Big Fella looked good for 3 years out of the L. The dunk was only on Al-Farouq Aminu a 3 year 6’9, 215lb vet out of Wake Forest though, but if it got his confidence up that’s good stuff. Just can’t be a liability on D & gotta keep up w/ the fast pace of the Heat transition.

  • Anthony

Y’all check and watch A. Davis shield himself from the dunk at 0:20-0:21

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    Two things:

    1) There’s NO WAY Joel Anthony turns that play into a two handed dunk. He either travels, fumbles the ball out of bounds, or travels while fumbling the ball out of bounds. All the Heat need from Oden is to stay healthy enough to keep Joel Anthony on the bench.

    2) Michael Beasley looks like a cracked-out Raven Symone

  • Fat Lever

Hahaha. Or does Raven Symone look like a more muscular SuperCoolBeas?

  • @iamMrjump

Happy for Greg Oden he couldn’t be in a better situation !

  • berkamore

Greg Oden reminded all of us that he can play AND he’s a seven footer. It really felt good to see him out there PLAYING. Four minutes is enough, baby steps………

If G.O can stay healthy (fingers crossed) and Beasley under control, the Heat will be so good it won’t even be fair.

  • @iamMrjump

@c88ae8db756b980c09c86700dc7e959d:disqus I really don’t see who is stopping them.. Although it’s preseason those kids in the Windy City have crushed everything and D.Rose looks unstoppable

  • Dundler

Even if he doesn’t play again after this, this is a pretty maor achievement for him. I was a huge fan of him and Conley as Buckeyes, hope it works for him.
He was actually really effective too, even if it was only for a couple of minutes

  • berkamore

Rose definitely looks like he’s on a mission and the Bulls play hard anyway. We’ll see what happens………….

    Good to see him back!

  • AddingVelocityDontTellMe

    Nah not right nah

  • bike

Looks like those Ageless Male pills are working great for Greg. The only side effect; all he wants to do is fight, fu*k, and drink.

  • fruizm

I think youre talking about “Horny Goat Weed” pills!

  • LP @ThisisEther

Amazing, he is further along than I expected…..and further along than the Heat were broadcasting…

But Now the high expectations will be coming from ESPN analyst, SLAM Part-Time analyst (that’s us), and Heat fans….

  • i_ball

I hope he can have a Grant Hill-ish career. I really hope he can play at least 10 minutes per game this season.

  • JibbsIsBallin

In addition to the drunk he also had a good defensive play and a rebound on the other end. Not much for an NBA player, but after how long he’s been out its great to see.

  • VanCityBBallq

Assuming GO stays relatively healthy, how well do you think he will match up against a guy like Roy Hibbert? He was arguably the biggest threat to Miami in that series…

  • spit hot fiyah

was it really impressive? a 7 footer that just got over the rim on a two handed dunk

  • LakeShow

    Dear god…… no…. no….. NOOOOO!!!

  • Allan

Extremely happy for Oden. After 3 long years of rehab, he’s close to game shape and hopefully he can stay healthy enough to continue his NBA career. Also this->

  • pposse

it was impressive that his knee didn’t buckle.

  • Mariano

2 fouls, 2 TO’s, 2 missed FT’s in 4 minutes. I’m actually cheering for Greg to come back strong, but that is definitely not effective

  • j

    bu…but..but. HE DUNKED?!

  • The Philosopher

I still worry about this kid…

  • Smits#45

I agree with you however I also did not expect him to look so “physically” strong. However my opinion is just based on these highlights.

  • M.

If healthy, this might be the most stacked heat team yet

  • berkamore

2 fouls (good he was doing some on D), 2 TO’s (he was at least touching the ball), 2 missed free throws (he got fouled and went to the line).

I like that. What you look for at the beginning of anything is ACTIVITY, just being out there and doing something. Then you can look at effectiveness. For now, that stat line is fine. But if GO produces those numbers in say, April, that may be a problem.

If he somehow by the grace of God stays somewhat healthy and can contribute it’s game over for the rest of the league.

  • http://soundcloud.com/tray-8 T-Ray

Lol you bastard you made me spill my drink

  • bigA

Yes!!!!!!! I love this so much. The last time I saw somebody dunking like that was Dwight back when he was healthy in the playoffs vs the Hawks. And I heard Shaq had some of those…

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    LOL My bad, fam!

  • Da-Meat-Hook

    That’s So Raven!

the raptors got jonas bro you don’t have to worry

  • melvo

I remember once that they described Greg Oden’s knee as an apple that someone took a GIANT bite out of.

  • KBM

That typo (drunk) is fitting because GO was an alcoholic his first years in the league.

  • Shifty

They gotta be the ugliest team in the league……..oden, haslem, lebron, beasley….BOSH

  • Dundler

Yeah…normally better to include all of the story though.
