Worthy of Your Attention

Blazers @ Hornets

by Marcel Mutoni

If a game was ever tailor-made for League Pass, this is it.

Two of the truly feel-good stories in the Association, playing at surprisingly high levels, square off tonight in New Orleans.

No one can honestly say that they predicted these two relatively obscure, yet excellent teams, with stars and likable characters on both sides, would be leading their respective divisions in late January. It’s actually kind of crazy if you think about it.

Sadly for the Hornets, despite putting an excellent product out on the floor, the fan support has been lacking. And this could lead to the eventually team moving. Again.

The Blazers don’t have any problems with fan support; their fan base is rabid. And that was before they absorbed the loss of Greg Oden, reeled off what seemed like forty straight wins, wedged themselves into the Playoff picture, and established Brandon Roy as a legitimate MVP candidate. Now, the Rose Garden is one of the toughest gyms for visiting teams to play in. An absolute mad house.

Roy and Chris Paul alone are reason enough to tune in tonight.

Meaningless Prediction: Blazers (104) – Hornets (109)

Too bad less than 10,000 fans will see this live.

Ah, but the Blazers will once again defeat the Hornets if they can do what they did last time: Exploit that Chander/Ghostface beef! Watching Chandler’s subsequent attempts to take over the game with a beautiful array of hook shots off the side of the backboard and dribbling the ball off his leg is something every Blazer fan can enjoy. But David West is on my fantasy team, so go him.

Why the league chooses to show Heat & Cavs games instead of ones like this never ceases to amaze.

As a Blazer fan, I’m worried about West and Chandler. Both those dudes did some damage last time they played. Way I remember it, Chandler didn’t miss any shots (since they were all dunks). Him getting ejected cost his team the game, IMO. And of course, Paul’s amazing. Looking forward to the game.

Hornets by 15!!! That’s right. #1 in the West! As for the support issue in NOLA, it’s a mix of problems. Half of the city can’t watch the team on TV due to a tough TV contract. They lost their radio partner and broadcast games on an R&B station. Most people forgot about them when they stayed that extra year in Oklahoma. And the NFL’s Saints are actively working against the team’s presence here by forcing the biggest media partner to ignore them. In spite of all this, their talent and quality will win the hearts of people. Just you watch.

Too true, Fredo. I’ve been at every game but one since December. The atmosphere is always great, and the buzz is building slowly but surely. The All-Star game and a Playoff run should really wake this city up to what they’ve been mising.
