BREAKING: Pau Gasol traded to the Lakers

Have fun with Kwame, Memphis…

by Lang Whitaker

Breaking news out of Memphis, where the Commercial-Appeal reports that the Grizz have traded Pau Gasol to the Lakers for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton and two future first-round draft picks.

Wow.

Guess the Grizzlies needed more point guards?

    Holy sh*t.

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Bananas! I hate this trade for everyone involved and for the Warriors, who were not involved, but were lustily eyeing the Lakeshow’s playoff spot. Effing bananas. I hate the Lakers.

Great move on the lakers part

How come no one else has picked up this story?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

greatest deal since a long time ago

Does Bynum head to the bench then?

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Gasol will play PF.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Holly may just have an immaculate conception without a baby in her womb.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

It’s still on on the follower’s website. Bucher, Stein, and their 87 other NBA insiders must be freaking the f*ck out. Or maybe they just can’t publish news that they haven’t “reported” themselves?

  • http://www.myspace.com/impulseshopper_acquirente its just alex

    Holy sh*t

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

This is like the Mets getting Santana for nothing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

*not* on the followers website, I mean.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

This is actually not a great move for them. Gasol needs the ball to be effective, so does Bynum, so does Kobe. If he had a spot up game it would be different, but butting heads on the blocks is not good for the youing man. And this guy plays less D than Kwame.

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Holly has just checked into a Toronto hospital.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

that’s exactly what the lakeshow needed, I hate it. What where grizz thinking? Kwame is a no good, they’re stacked with young pg’s. The draft picks are off course nice, but probably wont be very high if the Lakers start winning.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Also: The Jason Collins/Kwame Brown frontcourt will be the greatest thing in the history of great things. Clearly, the Grizz will not win another game this season. In fact, I doubt they’d win a seven-game series with their hometown university.

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Memphis has found a post player with worse hands than Milicic. Darko meet Kwame.

  • fernando

Lakers need more support than that, aint no rings this year

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Im so happy I think I just shat myself…

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Damn, forget they got Collins too. Memphis is cornering the market on unskilled 7 footers.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

I just might bake Kwame a going away cake…

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Whooaaaaa! Great move for the Lakers. Yet, does anyone know why the Grizzlies picked up another point guard?

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Critt can actually play the 2 as well.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Will Navarro demand a trade now?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

did the Jason Collins trade get finalized get? do i sence a 3 headed Collins Darko Kwame monster who r@pes cheeseburgers after hard games

  • Dizzle

    WOW.

Sure this may not bring a ring the LA, but they’re one step closer (still at a far distance). The Lakers basically gave away nothing and got someone that was a bit better than average.

If you could get rid of Kwame for someone that wasn’t Stro, Collins, someone from the Knicks, or some other useless person, then it’s called a STEAL.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Dave D’Alessandro said Marc Gasol was traded to the Grizzlies as well. Which would be funny.
But damn, a starting line-up of Fish, Kobe, Odom, Gasol and Bynum will be interesting to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

If the Grizz get Collins, Darko and Kwame, I’m getting my boys at undrcrwn to make a t-shirt.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

    WOW for the Lakers.

    ??? for the Grizz

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

EBoy, how is this not a good move for the Lakers?

  • Lamar

    YES!

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I like how Lang switched the pics of Gasol.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

This would have never happened if Jerry West was still alive.

  • bouncyman

whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo go lakers!! go gasol!! when can he play?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

lang, make them make some draws too, that way when either of the 3 do SOMETHING you can say, i litteraly sh!tted my Kwame’s

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@Dizzle – Pau is much better than an average player. He’s a rare talent, actually.

  • Tom

lang: I would buy a dozen of those shirts, i can just picture darko and kwame arguing over who was the bigger bust.

  • http://www.myspace.com/impulseshopper_acquirente its just alex

Didn’t even think of that, Ryan. 35 turnovers a game.

  • Tom

eboy: we’ve got 2 months to worry about those issues when Bynum comes back, man this just came out of nowhere……..I AM SO FREAKING HAPPY I”M USING CAPS FOR THE REST OF MY POSTS

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The Kwame, Darko, Collins front line is unprecedented. They should absolutely play all three at the same time.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Rynocerous, because the Lakers system is predicated on ball movement and spacing (the triangle is a thing of beauty when run correctly). Bynum, Pau, Odom, and Kobe are all ball controllers or need to be to be effective. How do you space Bynum and Gasol. To use the Heat as an example in better times, Shaq plays post center every play, the pf, UD, is a free throw spot up shooter or a wing jumoer kind of guy. I don’t see Pau doing that at all. That’s the type of PF they need, a bruiser, not a post player who will slow down the offense.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Lang, put this on your Darko, Collins, Kwame shirt: “Stay Injured”

  • http://www.myspace.com/impulseshopper_acquirente its just alex

That front line will average 10 rebounds, 8 points, and 30 turnovers.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Also, the Lakers are gonna be mighty thin tonight. I assume Gasol won’t be available. Ronny Turiaf, starting center?

  • Reggie Evans

    OMGOMG!

Sorry for saying fire Mitch Kupchak. I APOLOGIZE!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Pau’s going to be so happy to be on a playoff-bound team that he’ll probably be willing to fill any role. I think he’ll fit in just fine.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

That Darko/Kwame/Collins shirt is gonna say “The Three Stooges” on it.

  • niQ

Collins, Darko and Kwame for next cover!

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

I think the grizz are trying to corner the market on the biggest busts in league history, maybe they can get Tim Thomas and entice Shawn Bradley out retirement.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Lawrys! What the f*ck ever. If I could get rid of Kwame Brown and some meaningless picks for an All Star I make that trade 11 outta 10 times…

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

@niQ: I’m totally writing that story.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Just so you guys know, the follower is now reporting that someone named Ovechkin scored four goals to help the Caps beat the Habs (unless it was the other way around…) I think that has something to do with curling. Still nothing on this fairly significant NBA trade, though.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

I do hope it works out, though, cause it would be nice to have a squad to compete with the Spurs with extra length. And getting rid of Brown is fnatastic, but guess what, the Heat got rid of Toine too and I thought that was going to be a fantastic move for them and you have seen how that has worked out.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

And Bynum is the farthest thing from a ball controller on that team. All he does is catch lobs and putbacks…

  • http://www.clutchfans.net nick

Holy Sh!t. I think people don’t realize how good Pau is. As someone who Has watched Pau when possible/ rocked a very pau-esque hair-beard combo, i think he’s perfect for the triangle. He can hit an 18 footer, fnish with both hands, and work out of the high and low post. Damn. And when bynum gets back….double damn!

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’ve been tracking to Ryan. Amazing, isn’t it?

  • Dizzle

    @Ryne:

I agree that he’s an better than average.

He is a good player, but techincally he’s not special (yet) since he wasn’t leading the Griz to any wins. He wasn’t dominating the games.

Lebron James is special. Pau is better than average.

All the Grizz games and highlights I’ve seen are all about the young gunz (Gay, Conley, Lowry) and to an extent, Mike Miller.

I actually thought Pau was sitting this season out.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Don’t be mad, Myles, I’ve already told you that Lawry’s makes really good marinades, you don’t need to curse them. And what’s Bodie’s take on this?

  • Reggie Evans

Is Gasol injured? He better pass his physical!

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Reggie, I just might have to write Mitch a lengthy apology too…

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Well, I guess that’s all Bynum’s going to be able to do now, for sure.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I feel bad for Lowry and Navarro. Not only will they lose minutes to Crit (OK, well, maybe not too many), and good luck passing to THAT frontcourt. Mike Conley must be punching himself in the face right now, too.

  • Reggie Evans

There must be a another trade involved! Maybe the Nets are shipping Kidd to Memphis for Crit and draft picks?

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@Eboy – I see your point, but I don’t believe the Lakers will need to fit that mold to be successful. It’s true the Phil Jackson teams that won championships did have that “bruiser” PF in Horace Grant, Dennis Rodman and Karl Malone. But you also should notice how different the teams were. Point being, a good coach like Phil Jackson can make it work when given enough talent. I think we’ll see a change in how the Lakers play to compensate for Pau’s arrival.

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

Gasol can move the ball pretty well , and he’s going to be light years more effective than Brown was in a Laker Uni , even if his numbers dip they will be 15-8 and a block or 2 is a good deal for the Lakers.

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Conley is wondering how he went from Odom to THIS?!

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

Eboy I explained myself on the other thread.

is the Memphis front office retarded or something?

  • http://www.myspace.com/impulseshopper_acquirente its just alex

Reggie, I was wondering the same thing. I feel like something else might go down.

  • JohnnyRebel

Kobe must be happy as hell.

  • JohnnyRebel

Kobe must be happy as hell.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@ Reggie – I wouldn’t worry about Gasol not passing his physical. He was a game-time decision for the Grizzlies last game against the Nuggets. And if you ask me, he was sitting out because of these trade conversations.

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

They smoke some good sh*t down in Memphis. Ask Elvis.

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

    F*ck Memphis.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

I’m going to watching out for another Kobe YouTube soon…this time in much better spirits.

  • dOnRummY

Damn, I cannot make sense of this from a Memphis perspective, this is as bad or worse then the Vince Carter for Alonzo Mournings salary and a couple of stiffs trade. Somebody email chad ford

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Gay and Conley are definitely checking on their remaining eligibility.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Well the Lakers should be thrilled tonight, so Holly may get all her questions answered. And if she doesn’t know this yet, she’s going to literally sh*t herself as Myles almost did. Holly, dark pants, DARK PANTS!

  • Joe G

Niceeeeeeeee..Now put Odom in a package with farmar for Jason Kidd.. What u think?

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Open question: How much cap room does this give the Grizzlies? They’re definitely rebuilding around a Gay/Conley nucleus. They now have hella draft picks. They should turn it around in five years….;-)

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Russ: West is alive…he apparently orchestrated this deal to make his original team contenders again.

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

I don’t Pau is gonna suffer from the Lamar Odom “I don’t want be aggressive with the ball” syndrome. So I think it helps.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

It makes a LITTLE sense for Memphis–Gasol was obviously dissatisfied and needed to go. And Kwame’s expiring deal will give them some flexibility this summer. Not to mention Crit/Lowry/Navarro gives them some intriguing trade pieces. Now, if they could just find a taker for Brian Cardinal.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

    Eboy, you’re ridiculous! :-)

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

No, what we need to do is make a HUGE statue of a Grizzly Bear, with a plack that says Biggest Bust Kwame Darko and Jason Collins

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

And also this may help Odom anyway because he will be back at his natural 3 spot.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Finally. And would you look at the nerve of these motherf*ckers…
“The Memphis Grizzlies will send Pau Gasol and a future second-round pick to the Lakers for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, the unofficially retired Aaron McKie , the draft rights to Pau Gasol’s brother Marc and future first-round picks in 2008 and 2010, NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.”

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Mike Conley and Rudy Gay to the Knicks for Starbury

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@Russ, Right. I think the Grizzlies are doing the right thing as far as rebuilding is concerned. They weren’t going anywhere with Pau.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

This team is gonna be so good it makes my f*king head hurt…

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

Jones, the best part of the story is that picture of Gasol inside is really of Javaris.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

ESPN is awesome. And I love when ‘retired’ guys get traded.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

The real question is WILL PHIL JACKSON RIGHT A BOOK ABOUT THIS TOO?

  • MagicChicken

Since no one’s pointed this out, I think Memphis fans should take solace in the fact that they just bought 8 mil (or something like that) in cap space for next season. I’m sure everyone agrees, there’s no way they’re resigning Kwame.

  • http://www.myspace.com/impulseshopper_acquirente its just alex

    ahahaha. Good call, Bryan.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

If Terrel Brandon’s Contract were still alive it would have been traded too.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Myles, you realize it’s Pau and not Dwight Howard, right?

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

I can’t help but fear this lineup: Fischer, Kobe, Odom, Gasol, Bynum. Turiaf, Radmanovic, Farmar, Ariza off the bench! The Lakers are my favorites to win it in 2009.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Indeed it is, Shia. I mean, it’s not like they don’t break most of the news in the sports world, but considering they spend more on a week’s salary for all their reporters than Slam spends on its entire staff in a year, I can’t help but laugh. Alright, gotta go grade papers now.

  • Reggie Evans

Jerry West must have some pretty scandalous info on the Memphis FO.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Magic Chicken are you insane? Kwame is a franchies player

  • http://www.myspace.com/impulseshopper_acquirente its just alex

I wonder if Phil gave Kwame “A Walking Guide to Memphis Bakeries” when he handed out his books this week.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The bummer part about this deal for me is yet ANOTHER All-Star has been traded without the Bulls coming close to getting involved. F*ckers.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

a Lakers – Celtics final seems something in the future now.

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

    F*ck the Bulls front office.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    Somewhere(Canada!) Mr.Bryant is smiling…

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Two things, does this kill the Lakers possiblity of going after Kidd and now it’s pretty easy for them to get out of the first round, right?

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@Shia – What about the Bulls?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

    F*ck the Bulls front court

  • vmcb

    wow… this is insane

thank goodness the Lakers will be thin up front tonight when they play the Raps.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Lawrys. This automatically one of the best froncourts in the lig. Ballhandling, rebounding, post/perimeter presence, defense and high basketball IQ’s. Now add Kobe to that. This is a f*cking championship roster.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

no. A Vlad Rad, Farmar, Ariza, and future pick trade can still happen.

  • http://amboavahy.blogspot.com Tsiry

The Lakers are going to the finals, that’s what it means!

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Myles, please tell me you are sitting down.

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

It makes Odom more expendable so possibly not Eboy, they could package him and Radmanovic

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The Lakers pretty much can’t trade for Kidd now. Kwame’s salary would have had to be a big part of any deal. Now they’d have a hard time matching Kidd’s $20 million.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Exepect all bakerys in Mephis to step up security on the sidewalks surronding

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

    TAD, ?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

If they trade Odom and Halfpipe, they become awfully thin at the 3, don’t they?

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Cause I didn’t want you to fall down.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@Eboy – I think their possibilities for Kidd were killed this summer when they refused to trade Bynum. Especially after his inspired play this season, there’s no way they’d part with him to get Kidd. However, if the Lakers pulled this type of a fleecing off with Memphis, you never know what might happen with the Nets.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Leave this team as is and ride it out…

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Lakers DON’T need Kidd now anyway.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

If that happens, I’ll say they are one of the two favorites in the West, regardless of what Team Hypeman Brown (he’s almost as good as Flavor Flav)says, this move will pay dividends next season, once the squad has a chance to play some meaningful time together. Without Bynum for 5 to 6 morer weeks leaves just about a month of regular season games to get every acclimated. They need that time to have a chance to be great. That’s all I’m saying.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

  • Dizzle

It’d be funny if Rad took Pau snowboarding this year.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Why shouldn’t we be content with the current Lakers roster. As Russ said, contract situations will most likely make this the final Laker hand dealt. And it’s damn near a royal flush already.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

I’m really not trying too, TAD. I’d have been happy for their asses if they got Kidd, someone who could get Kobe and Bynum the ball, something they have been struggling with, especially in late game situations. (see: last two losses).

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Ryan, did you notice that your least-favorite media outlet had an OJ Mayo feature in the new issue of their magazine (the one with the absurd “FANS” cover)? Anyway, your story is somewhere between 15 and 50 times better.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

And as I told Myles, the Bulls need to hire Charles Oakley as an all-purpose motivator. Pax not getting involved in deals? PUNCH. Hinrich shooting 30 percent from the floor? PUNCH. Ben Wallace posting double-singles? PUNCH.

Bynum and Gasol will be a PAUwerful combo

They dont need Kidd now. Too many cooks in the kitchen and whatnot. A late season addition worked wonders for the Pistons a few years ago and Im interested to see how far the Lakeshow can go. Next year theyll just be that much more dangerous.

yea Memphis is retarded.. jus trade Mike Miller to a team that’ll use him properly now too.. like the Phoenix suns.. trade Miller for Marcus Banks, that makes about as much sense as the Gasol trade.. and the Suns could use Miller lol. anyways i think i just became interested in the NBA season again..

What I like about Gasol is he’s still 27 years old. He’s at the prime of his career, and will be effective for the Lakers for many years, if another Lakers dynasty (yes, I said it) ever emerges. His age and experience fits perfectly with the Kobe and Lamar. This gives the Lakers a talented vet nucleus, also in the prime of their careers.

I didn’t even know Pau had a brother in the NBA.

I don’t think they should do it anyway Russ, I’m just saying it is possible cause Eboy asked.I like Odom , Gasol and Kobe.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

    It was a joke, Russ.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Myles, it’s not going to be a cake walk for the Lakers, but I agree. Conference Finals this season, at least.

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

who’s C-Webb? just kidding.. but no, his joinin of the Warriors is retarded.. on a good halfcourt team (like Dallas) i could picture Webber having an impact in big situations here and there.. on the Warriors he’ll just slow them down

  • Reggie Evans

eboy – As long as Bynum comes back. It’s interesting to think of Bynum and Gasol playing at the same time. Won’t defenses pack it in? Lamar Odom has no J. But I guess Kobe and Fisher/Farmar can shoot a little bit.

Another question I have – how many years left on Gasols contract? How much will he want?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jake Appleman

Navarro came to the league to play with his best friend only for his best friend to be traded for expiring contracts, another small guard and his little brother, who isn’t all that good…gotta feel for the dude.

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

trade Odom, trade Odom, trade Odom, trade Odom.. someone from the Lakers please read this.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

Funny how Odom was a fuc*ing choke artist this morning, now he fits perfectly in the flow of things.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

Like Seinfeld said it:”(Memphis)I will show you the Stooges…”

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@Jake – I’m sure Damon let Navarro know this is a business.

  • Reggie Evans

And don’t forget – Lakers still have Ariza coming back!!!

Memphis fans(the new Hawks fans) – is Pau’s defense really that bad? Or is like Nash, where the reputation is worse than the reality?

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Well, it’s one more offensive threat ahead of LO, so he can focus more on being a facilitator. Odom’s fine as long as he’s not the second option.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

@EBoy – True statement about Odom. The difference? His role on this team is much different this afternoon than it was this morning.

  • Reggie Evans

yes Odom is more valuable now to the Lakers

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Gasol has three more years left on his deal after this year.

  • Jeronimo

Tado: Marc (Pau’s brother) is not in the NBA yet (he’s currently playing in Spain), but the Lakers drafted him on the summer of 2007.

  • http://the-second-coming.blogspot.com The Second Coming

GREATEST SH*T EVER. Holly I’ma marry you if you had anything to do with this.

fisher (then farmar), kobe, odom, gasol, bynum. I need to change my pants.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

You guys do realize that Lamar is most effective in a uptempo system which maximizes his length, ball handling and finishes and the addition of Pau is the EXACT opposite of that?

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Someone may want to tell him to stay in Spain instead of going to Memphis.

  • http://www.myspace.com/underoath Bryan

Nah dude Pau can rebound and start breaks.

  • http://the-second-coming.blogspot.com The Second Coming

hey…have brothers ever been traded for each other before?

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

All lamar has to do is initiate the offense and hit the boards. An uptempo system is for a small team. This team aint small anymore. Lamar and Pau are both inside/outside threats and both move the ball well, which is what works for the triangle.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Odom and Gasol’s opposite games should compliment well. The diversity of talent will make them a very tough mark for opponents.

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

i don’t think Odom fits into the picture better at all.. not considering he’d play at the 3 next to Gasol & Bynum. then add to the fact that he’s never really been able to compliment Bryant.. then add to the fact that he’s not a good jump shooter.. then WTF is he going to do?! passing into the post & rebounding are about the only two things he’s good at..

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

I guess it will be nice to evaluate the deal once a game is actually played.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i need to pick up the pieces of my brains that got blown off… who’s left on grizz now? cap room is nice but no one wants to sign with a team that’s terrible AND in a small market. this makes me think jerry west is still pulling strings in memphis.

  • Reggie Evans

eboy – it may be beneficial to both, when the Lakers run, the onus will be off of Gasol to produce, and when the game slows down, the onus will be off of Odom to produce.

Or they could both suck. But I doubt it.

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

PS. i think Gasol and Bynum should be ok on the offensive end at least.. Gasol’s a good passer, and Bynum (at least right now) needs DEEP interior position to do well, which comes off of secondary plays or offensive rebounds anyways.

  • whooo!

chicago and jersey really blew it big time! lakers get post player who can put up 20 for a guy who’s dumb, can’t catch, can’t finish, is mentally weak, and has been hated by the home crowd since he was in dc. the west is so unreal!

  • Reggie Evans

I want that artist guy’s next drawing to be the Lakers!

  • Young Chris #3

Kobe must be happy that he didn’t get traded to Pluto now… I like this Lakers team. They’re gonna be tough to beat when at full strength, but I still think the Hornets are the real deal and the Spurs will turn it back on eventually…

  • Young Chris #3

and did this thread really get 200 posts in less than 90 minutes?

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com white hot eboy

They won’t both suck, I think Lamar is at the end of his Lakers road, though. I think he will move. They would be incredibly deadly if they got a knockdown three shooting SF iwho can spread the florr for Kobe’s drives and sapce sh8t for Bynum/Pau If that same dude could play some hard perimiter D to give Kobe a rest, forget it. That would be the end all be all deal for this team.

gonna say something i don’t think i’ve ever admitted, even to myself, i think.. but part of me’s always wanted Kobe to have another chance to go for a string of championships.. i’m not gonna go as far as to say he’s comparable or better than Jordan etc, but in this generation, i can’t really think of anyone else who’s a harder competitor on the basketball court.. dude can do it all, and as of now i’d still take Kobe over Lebron anyday..

  • http://slamonline.com mutoni

namik brought up a good point i was thinkin of a bit earlier tho.. Jarvis Crittenton looks pretty solid and i think he’ll be a lot better than Jordan Farmar in a couple years. don’t see how that helps Memphis who already has two solid PGs in the making… :S

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Another interesting fact about Gasol: although he’s been fighting injuries all season, he still ranks among the NBA’s top 30 in PER. That’s ahead of Josh Howard, Josh Smith, Shawn Marion, Richard Hamilton, Carmelo Anthony, Brandon Roy, etc.

  • bOBbY DIgITAl

Maybe lakers can trade Odom and farmar for Kidd …is that possible

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    nice izzo.
eboy, thanks for stating the obvious. kudo points. though i think lamar is versatile enough to create a niche for himself in the system.
lakers is now a top 3 team in the entire league. how did this happen? and there’s also an additional addition by subtraction in this trade too. it’s like trading in a broken cassette player for an ipod.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

By the way, PER is Player Efficiency Rating – basically a Hollinger-derived per-minute productivity rating.

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Lamar dont have to shoot. The team still has plenty sharpshooters. Just board and pass. This team can be for real now. LA was already putting fear into Phoenix, who couldnt stop Bynum. Now Gasol too? With Lamar owning the boards? Dunzo. Dallas? Maybe. New Orleans? They have the bodies to match up defensively, but I dont think they can keep up offensively. Utah? Ditto. Denver? Ha. Play some effin defense. San An is the only team stronger right now and they might lose valuable playoff positioning with this slide theyre in now. The Lakers can realistically go very far this year and certainly even farther in the future.

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

lol at the broken cassette for an ipod analogy.. i’m gonna laugh til i cry when i watch a Grizzlies game and they announce Kwame Brown & Milicic in the same starting lineup.. hopefully Hakim Warrick gets some burn now though.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Other than the teams they are on now.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

They could also both re-sign with their respective teams. I could totally see Jamison taking a pay cut to stay in DC, and Donald Sterling needs to show he cares about winning. Um, again.

Elton Brand is NOT going to play for a rebuilding franchise. He’s done that TWICE already. He’s too much of a beast to be stuck in development hell…

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Donald Sterling cares about Donald Sterling’s bank account. But since he has a man crush on Maggette he’ll probably re-sign Brand.

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

yea seriously.. i wanted the Suns to win at least one championship, but its looking less and less likely.. if Amare could play defense consistently without fouling like a 12 yr old girl, and if Diaw could play like the way we all know he CAN when he comes off the bench, then the Suns would be a goooood team… as it is, doesn’t seem all to fit and the margin of error’s too small (coz they don’t play D)

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Sterling can’t talk so much sh*t about Dunleavy’s coaching and then NOT at least make an effort to re-sign his best player.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

    Holy F-cking Sh-t!

Trade to Los Angeles, I hear they have the best 2-man in the league, one of best up and coming centers and they just landed a deal for Pau Gasol, giving-up a player that was hurting them more then anything else with his horrible hands.”

  • Krayzie Bone

I have to side with those who are trashing the Grizz. They’ve been bad since Big Country was taken, so there is a history through their entire existence of questionable moves. The years of decency brought by the gasol for shareef trade were an aberation. This is a stunning return to form

  • Orlando

I think this will make Odom much better…now he can ge a Shawn Marion..instead of a Scottie Pippen..

jbn you’ll see a better Lamar now that he can go to handling more and less banging. And Orlando lets not get carried away.

  • http://Odenized.com Ryne Nelson

Russ – I wouldn’t bet all my money on it. Boozer has an early termination option to become an unrestricted free agent after next season. With Boozer’s history of money-hounding and Utah’s history of penny pushing AND other bigs making much more than Boozer (Amare, for instance, will be making $4M more than Boozer next season), he may well up and leave.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

Shouldn’t whichever of the Paxson’s that is “running” the Bulls right now be immediately fired for allowing the Lakers to give up a pile of flaming dog crap and a redundant puppy in exchange for Pau?
BTW – The Lakers have a decidely Euro flavor now. And I am concerned that we are violating some unspoken rule by having 6 or even 7 white guys on the team, depending on Farmar’s heritage.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I don’t know. I’ve talked to Boozer fairly recently, and he seems to enjoy life in Utah–both on and off the court.

  • http://www.patriotsundefeated.com Jordan Hagedorn

It’s not that Boozer didn’t want to play with LeBron, it’s that the Jazz threw stacks of cash at him. This Gasol trade in my mind is excellent for the Lakers. Kobe, Gasol, Fisher, Odom, and Bynum when he gets back with Vlad Rad and Farmar off the bench is a solid squad. With Kobe being Kobe and now having another weapon on the court, they can win in the playoffs. Some may say they can’t compete with the Spurs or Suns but all it takes is a few games. Look at the Warriors knockin’ off the Mavs last year. Should be interesting and fun to watch.

regardless what most of you think, i don’t think that the gasol-bryant combination will get you very far in the playoffs – if they even get there. gasol didn’t fit the iavaroni-style of play, so he had to go. now the lakers got themselves a lamar odom clone without the passing skills … congrats!

  • http://www.hagahaninge.se John

Just as a part of my celebration:
    YEEEEEEEEAAAAAH!

  • jj

meehhhh not totally sold on this trade. sure they got gasol for free, and that in itself is great. but this whole thing of getting tons of all stars together and have them play is not such a great idea. does anyone remember the days of payton, kobe, shaq and malone? a team with FOUR hall of famers!?!?!?!? and yet… where did that get them? they were destroyed by the pistons in that finals.

i don’t think this makes them title contenders

  • http://www.pretendingtohaveanownwebsite.com Art Vandelay

When I read that headline just moments ago, I thought “Poor Lamar, you got traded again”…then, I read into the article and thought (from a Lakers-fan’s point of view) “HAHAHAHAHA!”…guess Kupchak is the luckiest man on the planet right now…
Oh btw I am NOT a Lakers-fan, but I appreciate a trade where one side becomes a REALLY REALLY serious contender and the other s*cks even more than before…

  • Jeff

    lakerland rejoice..

BREAKING NEWS: Mike Miller traded to (fill in team) ! In return, the Grizzlies’ front office gets some advice in “how to be on the good end of a trade”…

  • Young Chris #3

JJ, you really don’t believe that the Lakers would have lost to the Pistons that year had Malone avoided injury, do you?

  • http://slamonline josh

lets go lakers we in the buildin
.can u smell champion of 08.

  • http://www.patriotsundefeated.com Jordan Hagedorn

JJ, where did it get them? To the Finals that’s where. They didn’t win but all you can ask for is a shot. This trade makes the Lakers undoubtably better. They got a good player in Pau. He is the first player from the Grizzlies to ever be an All Star. The Lake Show was already a contender, this makes them better though.

    good luck with kwame

  • Ill WIll

I’m officially NOT using the Memphis Grizz anymore in 2K8.
    Horrible, absolutely horrible trade.
    Darko AND Kwame upfront? Yikes.
On the other hand, Lakers are gonna be a force when Big Baby Bynum gets back.

  • Ben Payne

Lakers are gonna be so good when bynum gets back. When i heard this i couldn’t decide which part of this trade was better, us getting gasol, or us getting rid of kwame haha

  • asfasfasdf

i think this is a good deal but lakers did give away this yrs draft pick which is gonna be hot theres soo many good players in this yrs draft and javaris i think had potential but kwame was needed out the deal is aaaiiigghhhtt gasol better do good go lakers

its time for a good old pow-wow in lakerland.

  • http://yahoo.com DP

Kobe murdered Toronto when he heard Gasol was coming to L.A. This is going to be very interesting and all I can say is ITS TIME FOR A DAMN CHAMPIONSHIP NOW BABY! play wit it.

  • Reggie Evans

I still can’t believe the Lakers got an All-Star, and they didn’t have to give up Odom OR Bynum to get him! I always thought it would have to be one of the the two.

  • rand33p

kobe went off against in toronto today..someone seems excited

  • Chukaz

I can’t believe that Mitch is actually a f*ckin’ genious. It’s freakin’ unbelievable. My shocked, happy and many other emotions. I’m so f*ckin’ confused right now. Is Mitch a genious? Is who ever the f*ck took Jerry’s job that f*ckin’ stupid? Is it a f*ckin’ conbination of f*ckin’ both? I need answers.

  • Chukaz

The Lakers are gonna win that stupid championship they want this year for sure. Wouldn’t it be funny if they tried to trade Kobe now or at least put a rumor out there. It ain’t gonna happen (it better not), but it would be funny.

  • gdon

Hm, this trade makes the Lakers legit contenders but beating the Spurs to get to the finals? I don’t see it.

Celts won’t get past the Pistons either. So we’re looking at good ol’ DET vs SA again! Yes, it’s not the exciting back to the future theme with the C’s and Lakers, but that’s reality.

  • Reggie Evans

Reality is that the chip is up for grabs this season. The healthiest, hottest team will win.

  • mamadou n’diaye

haven’t read the last 200 comments or so but white hot eboy is a clueless hater who needs to get a job

  • Sko

one of the key differences btw now and the Mailman/Gove thing, is, only one hall of famer, and it’s unquestionably Kobe’s team. that second part makes a huge difference. Given everything, I can’t see how Kobe could be much happier with how his trade demands worked out. These guys know that they work for Kobe, and at they all want to win. Imagine what we’ll see from Pau now that he’s not #1. suddenly it doesn’t matter if he’s soft. These Lakers have the chance to be special, and I think that they should let Lamar paly out his deal and resign him for less after next season, and frontload Bynum’s extension. And who knows, they might still be able to get Artest w/o a trade if they find a way to unload Vlad in time for the offseason. I hope they can stay healthy, cuz I’d love to see them in the finals for a while.

  • Question

Is that the real mamadou n’diaye? Awesome…

  • b_deezy

if only damon waited one more week!!!!!

  • Chris

    Holy Sh!t

  • http://kayceonline.com/blog/category/basketball-related/ Kevin

poor Mike Miller.. at least he’s gonna get lots and lots of shots.

  • phunkykarma

Some say Gasol is soft… He isn’t soft, he’s Spanish . Seriously his passing game will really fit in the Triangle Offense, and he’s a good scorer, rebounder, shot-blocker…

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

Stat-wise this trade looked good, but y’all should still remember that Gasol also had Shaq’s ego minus his brute power and skill set.
Let’s see what happen when Pau didn’t get a lot of touches.

  • phunkykarma

Everebody ‘s already talking about it, but I can’t wait for a Celtics-Lakers finals.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Anyone seen Holly since this trade went down. After she gushed (and gushed) about Bron-Bron a few days ago, i bet her Lakerlove is gonna come back in full effect. Oh and f**k Pau, bloody whiner. Good luck living up to Mambiatch’s expectations Pau.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

  • phunkykarma

That’s a robbery !! Gasol for Kwame Brown !! You do this in the streets, you go to jail !!

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

I wanna know how Gasol felt when Phil played mind games with him or rather benching him for Ronny Turiaf.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    @Sesa:Nobody has/had Shaqs EGO.Period.

  • phunkykarma

Gasol is the first finesse Lakers center since Divac and Kareem.

  • Krayzie Bone

Gasol is such a nice fit on any team in nead of front line help. He’s a bit like bosh, but you trade height for speed. Other than that, they can both score, both rebound, both offer weakside defensive help, and both can the occassional 3 pointer, meaning that they both have a lot of range at your 4/5 position. I have a feeling that Bynums stats will drop a bit with them both playing together, and I think that Kobe’s recent scoring binge will be replaced by a hyper efficient, pass oriented game something like D wade from a couple of years ago (statistically speaking: Kobe has a much deadlier 3 point game than Wade). I can’t see how the lakers don’t win a couple of rings with Bryant Gasol and Bynum. Its really impressive how they held of on dealing Bynum, given how he is now a double double man, and how they have managed an amazing theft. I don’t understand the grizzlies logic, as they will have to overpay to get someone around the same level of talent as Gasol, so when it comes to building for the future, I say its about staying in the black now and the future is never.

  • Reggie Evans

Mitch Cupcake and Danny Fingers as GMs of the Year? Talk about Black Swans.

  • http://slamonline.com tt

can’t wait for sundays game, wanna see how they gel together

  • phunkykarma

Every time there is a big trade like this one, I like to re-read the old articles about the guys that get traded, in my Slam magazine collection ( I have every issue since MJ’s last cover as a Bull in ’98, mind you )so currently, I’m re-reading the articles about Pau.

  • Ill WIll

You remember which issues the guys who get traded are in?
    Impressive.

  • RV

not that it means much, but has anyone mentioned pau’s brother was part of the trade? So i guess they wont get to play together

  • http://myspace.com bradnonmeza

    huh
a new lakers celtics rivalry is back in the works with both teams having the chance to get to the finals now!

  • Reggie Evans

Marc Gasol was traded to Memphis. Memphis GM claimed he was becoming “one of the best big men in Europe”.

  • Krayzie Bone

Thats an obscenity to make that statement on the GMs part (i’ve seen his name, but I don’t remember it because its not worth remembering). The raptors have one of the best bigs in Europe, and he shot 40 percent with 8 and 5 last year. Not to say that he wasn’t worth it, but a servicable role player included as a throw-in in a deal like this one is just hot steaming bull. The grizzlies don’t draw flies, so they’re running the business on the assumption that they’ll always be sh*te, so how do we make money in that scenerio. Its not cap room, its a balance sheet.

  • McDonalds Fan

Aryan Superman Dirk Nowitzki will still defeat all challengers. Including the Lakers with their recently acquired Hispanola.

  • MoMONEY

I expect Kobe to put on a show now… He should get MVP and will be focused and money the playoffs. I think the Lakers are a title contender and if they add JKidd somehow they will win it all. Buckle up fellas Kobe is about to go crazy

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

I’m worried about the matchups, the fact that right now the Lakers only built to defeat the Spurs. When the Lakers matched up with the Suns or maybe the Pistons, the 3pt defense will be non-existent
It’s either Pau or Bynum will be on the bench.

  • phunkykarma

In fact, there are only two articles about Gasol in my collection of Slam magazine. One is in issue no.97 of may 2006, with KObe(!) on the cover (the one with the snake )The other article I can’t find it.

  • MrTweaks

I’ve been trying to tell you that the Lakers will bounce back…management-wise…like since 3 years ago…when the Miami “heat” was on….way before the time the whole Garnett to boston hype was on.. The Lakers just move slower…but in my vision way smarter…As far as bringin` the ball…etc…you still have to consider the fact that Fisher is still alive…Farmar got some skills..etc.
Anyway….i’m like out of my mind right now…let’s just hope Pau don’t get all “paralel” on the triangle.

  • http://SLAMONLINE JONATHAN HELMICK

THIS IS THE WORST TRADE EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF THE NBA. THE GRIZZ SHOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN RID OF GASOL HE WAS THE BEST ON THE TEAM AND THE GRIZZ COACH IS GOING TO TRADE FOR BROWN, CRITTINTON AND SOME DRAFT PICKS. STUPID STUPID STUPID

  • Bubba Chuck

1 thing: look @ tha grizz big men: darko milicic & kwame brown: 2 top draft picks, failed, traded, now playing 4 memphis (their 3rd team) Just sayin: Kwame Brown & Darko Milicic: meant 2 b 2gether…

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    Kobe is sizzlin’ against Wiz…

  • phunkykarma

Pau Gasol is … wait, he doesn’t have a AKA, and he deserves one !! (just like Chris Paul, the CP3 nick-name sucks.) Pau Gasol, was I saying before degressing, is the best-passing big man Phil Jackson has ever had. That’s quite something. Aside from Shaq and Horace Grant, maybe.

  • jeremy

I hate LA, so this sucks.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

did it ever happen before in the NBA that brothers were traded?

  • Reggie Evan

    ELI AM LEGEND

  • Reggie Evan

People will be talking about “THE HELMET CATCH” for years to come.

  • malak33zy

    who is pau gasol

  • Krayzie Bone

I think his nickname is Pau! but framed in one of those batman action bubbles. Word to Adam West. Shaq was good at centre, but Pau isn’t a true Centre. He’s like Dirk or Bird, but with a bit less range. Dirk is so tall that they can put him at the 4, and Pau is the same, but they play like 3′s. In Pau’s case, he’s got enough of a post game to even play a bit of the center position, but you wouldn’t let him guard any of the real NBA centres from the past if you wanted him to live more than a quarter.

  • Krayzie Bone

Its quite possible that the lakers don’t win it all this year, but I would give them the best chance to win next year. By that time, they will have been through the rigors of a playoffs and a training camp together. The one thing they have to hope for is spain being shown an early exit in the olympics, because you can imagine that they will be way harder on Pau than they will on Kobe’s loaded US squad

  • Logan

any idea what number he is wearing for the Lakers…if 13, we could just call him PG13

  • Joey E

    Logan: he cant wear13 cause its retired by wilt;

if i was to guess, id say he still wears 16

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

what happen on number 16? Any Lakers HOF wearing 16?

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

I played with Gasol on my Lakers with NBA 2K7 but the Lakers were a half step slower on interior defense, it’s either Gasol or Odom racking up fouls.
It only worked when I put Turiaf alongside Gasol on the lineup.

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

    I meant 2K8

  • VegasLaker

Here is some food for thought, take a look at the current players the lakers have and the players The Bulls had in 96-98. With Phil coaching is it crazy to say this laker team has the potential to be just as good?

    1997 Bulls 2007 Lakers

    Steve Kerr Derek Fisher
    Pippen Lamar Odem
    Luc Longley Pau Gasol
    Rodman Andew Bynum
    MJ Kobe
    Toni Kukoc Luke Walton
