Riley Stunned as Shaq Burns Another Bridge

by Marcel Mutoni

Before playing (and losing to) the Celtics in Beantown last night, Shaquille O’Neal built with the great Jackie MacMullan of the Boston Globe, and he absolutely unleashed on the Miami Heat organization.

“I love playing for this coach and I love playing with these guys,” said O’Neal yesterday. “We have professionals who know what to do. No one is asking me to play with Chris Quinn or Ricky Davis. I’m actually on a team again.”

Pat Riley, as you might imagine, couldn’t believe what O’Neal said.

“It’s sad that he says those things,” Riley said Wednesday. “We shared so much here together.”

“We sent him to Utopia and we’re here left with the carnage,” Riley said. “And I don’t know why he’s not happy.”

Don’t be surprised, Riles. This is the kind of guy Shaq is.

He never leaves a team on good terms. You should talk to his grade 9 coach; that guy still hasn’t recovered from how things ended.

    interesting….the post up has disappeared!

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com Eboy

Hey, Pat, you lost the carnage of Shaq’s contract, so why bother responding and try to make Team Abortion competitive.

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Grade 9? Sh*t, you should talk to his biddy ball coach. I hear he is in isolation at the psych ward.

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

No wonder Shaunie… oh, never mind…

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

And E, I wouldn’t have given him 5 years, but I would have given him 20 mil and expected that he’d play and commit at that level. I’ve loved the guy all his career (including LSU), I’m just really dissappointed right now. But, like I said previously, he was right about Riley’s decision making. But he should have kept the other stuff to himself.

  • Andrew

Did Riles just called Marion ‘carnage’?

  • haz

    ricky davis?

  • James

He’s playing on a crappy team, but Quinn has actually been somewhat impressive. Davis on the other hand, even if he scores 50, it’ll always be at his team’s expense. I can see where Shaq’s coming from.

  • Slobodan Chutzpah

I love Shaq as much as the next Ricky Davis but this shows how much he can get away with because of his larger-than-life persona. Most players would be crucified in the press for showing this kinda attitude towards their old team. Still, it’s nice to see someone in the NBA speaking their mind for a change. Plus, anyone who calls out RD can’t be all bad.

  • peteb80

If I understand correctly people like Shaq are called “pompous pr1cks” in your language. Or would “selfish arrogant dOuchebag” be more appropriate?

  • Sparker

well, on the day that ricky and chris enter the hall of fame, i guess shaq will just have to eat his words

  • Captain America

Heat won’t crack 20 games next year either. Marion will get the hell out. So, who is the loser Riles? Et tu.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Squirrel7

I still can’t believe the high regard this clown is held in, by the media and fans.

A great player (in his prime), sure, but as an off-the-court personality, he’s a pr*ck.

  • Dan

How come nobody is reporting about Shaq saying Kobe is MVP? That has got to be one of the biggest Shaq turn-arounds ever.

  • rav

what did chris quinn ever do to him – steal his club sandwiches?

  • Captain America

    Quinn and Buckets ain’t shiit

  • Mendel

Well, its okay, Pat Riely can keep playing with Tricky Ricky Davis

  • lilziah

Shaq did promise a Title. He deliverd. He never said that he would be there forever. He did recognise that it was a team build for the “here and right now”. He moved on. Good for him. I don’t feel a bit for the Heat or Riley. He and the organization were pretty sneaky and put out a good coach on the shelf so Riley could win another “ring”. Not very classy.

  • rav

actually, he may have been jealous of watching d-wade nailing all those free throws

  • Chris

Shaq is actually correct about what he said, but man he didn’t have to announce it publicly where the whole world would hear. He is right, HE is on a TEAM again. You have to admit, the Heat were once a team, but afterwards went downhill. With the addition of all the players after their championship victory, and D-Wade’s injury, it only resulted downhill. Damn though Shaq.

  • Solito

Nice on RAV! Shaq should stop complaining and check where he is at. Riley shouldn’t even try to play the hurt philanthropist. He is a business man, if it didn’t go hand in hand with unloading Shaqs contract for an expiering one, Big Stumble would be collecting DNP’s in Miami.

  • http://spaceshipjay/myspace.com Spaceship Jay

Shaq is a jerk. No really, he is a jerk. And everybody else is a jerk for just realizing just how much of a jerk Shaq is. Penny+Kobe+Wade

  • rav

oh, seeing as its not mentioned anywhere else on here yet and its related to the heat – thank you nba for DOUBLING the price of tickets for the preseason game in London later in the year for Heat-Nets. Thank you NBA, even though the arena was around 70% full, you thought it was a good idea to double the price to watch the worst two teams of the tour (hornets and wiz are the other two btw)

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

I have nothing nice to say.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

When Phoenix trades him or doesn’t offer him $20 mill per soon he’ll hate them too. What is this elementary school?

  • SA

I don’t care for Shaq at all, but if there is one guy in the league that you can tell would be a terrible guy to play with, it’s Ricky Davis.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Squirrel7

I noticed that too, I’m going to a take trip all the way to the NYC for a Knicks game (god help me!) rather than pay £250 (approximately $500 US) for floor seats!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ethan

Shaq is washed up anyway whats he whining about he got three rings in LA got mad cause Kobe was better than him so he ripped LA till he got sent to another pre-superstar on a unproven team like LA used to be. Then became D-Wade’s biggest fan for a couple of years got another ring, Dwyane got finals MVP which Shaq no doubt thought he deserved, started gettin mad, allegedly being to injured to play when he was probably just resting up to stick it to Miami like he did Orlando & Los Angeles. So now he’s in Pheonix reaping Nash’s & Amare’s benefits, but dont worry a bit he wont leave them out im sure when he retires he’ll cry about the suns organization and how they played no D, how steve nash just wouldnt the right fit and that Amare should just be a forward all the time and that Mike D’Antoni just was’nt a good enough coach to get over the hump.
And just to think i used to be a fan of his, gimme a break i was 12

Mutoni, you need to post this article to be fair to Shaq’s “criticism” of Ricky and Quinn.

  • BxBaller

I hope he or the Suns don’t win anything.

  • http://whitehoteboysworld.blogspot.com Eboy

Holly, please moderate my 12:26p comment, if you are lurking.

  • rav

squirrel – those £250 seats were £85 last year!!! it wouldnt bother me so much if it was one of the top western teams (which is why i’m gutted that new orleans will not be playing in london) or even someone like cleveland, orlando or detroit (hell even portland would have been worthwhile, and the bulls would always bring in a decent crowd because of their past and luol deng). instead we get to put up with one of the biggest wastes of talent in the game and the next penny hardaway (on the plus side i do get to see shawn marion shoot three’s :D )

  • rav

“Garnett doesn’t play defense” Shaq (Boston Globe)

  • Shooter#9 – Brasil

shaq is being the bitch he always was… check the story on Calderon and see the difference
at least he wasn’t complaining against Wade, cause after Penny and Kobe was what i expected…

Shaq, u are a Hall of Fame, you don’t need to explain your failures burning other players and organizations. you had a great carreer, congrats and gimme a LITTLE LESS CONVERSATION.

  • Jolst

And a little more action please…

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

Normally I’m a Shaq fan, but he is definitely the punk ass trick in this situation.

  • peteb80

Eboy, I don’t really see the difference, he still says Davis and Quinn suck (at least at shooting). While I’m okay with his assessment of Davis, I think it’s pretty low to call out some unexperienced player who will have to fight to stay in the league.

  • http://hi5.com Triple Threat

Ricky Buckets is da man. I don’t get why Shaq is hating on Ricky Davis, the dude can flat out score. His the man, and I’m a big fan of Ricky Davis. Ricky Davis MVP for the 2008/2009 season, lmao I’m fu*cking kidding, I thought it was funny how Shaq was calling out Ricky Davis. Ricky is not a team player, he never was and he never will be. Give Chris Quinn sometime. Who knows Slam might write a 3 page spread on him next season.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Shaq’s follow-up response is crap. He sh*tted on Quinn and Davis to be funny. It was funny, but it was still lame.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Dan: Shaq said Kobe is the MVP? When was that?

  • http://www.workforstudents.com Adrian Zapata

$500 for floor seats isnt that bad, I paid a little more in San Antonio last season

  • Slobodan Chutzpah

He did say that. Called him “Kobester” as well.

  • rav

adrian – they were around $170 for last years game – and it was around 70% attendance!!!

  • rav

also lower level seats are $140-180 (compared to $75 last year) and upper level are $60-100 (compared to around $40 last year) hence my bitchin ;)

  • bballer

It’s funny how everybody made Kobe to be the bad guy but nobody wants to get on Shaq no matter what he does! Let’s not forget that this is his 4th team!

  • bballer

And let’s also not forget that Shaq always leaves his old team on bad terms.

    WHOOPS….”Big Fish Little POND…”

  • Dan

    In a recap from espn:
O’Neal won the award in 2000 with Los Angeles before a well-publicized rift with Bryant led the Lakers to split the pair up. Asked who he liked in the MVP race, though, O’Neal said, “The Kobester. He’s an assassin.”

“With LeBron [James] coming in right behind,” O’Neal added. “After that, I really haven’t been paying attention.”

  • Dan

Is this not the biggest 180 that Shaq has done in a long time??

  • mat smith

lol, how long has riles been in the “L”? hahaha….

  • G Diesel

You guys have no idea how disgusting it is to play with Ricky Davis or Smush Parker.

  • The Notorious King

his nickname should be big baby

  • rav

“You guys have no idea how disgusting it is to play with Ricky Davis or Smush Parker”

but chris quinn doesnt deserve that, especially from a guy who tries to come across as ‘classy’

  • tealish

There are so many things wrong with this man…but for me, I’m just going to sum it all up by saying Shaq is an ass. A complete ass.

  • Allenp

We can type “ass?” I didn’t know that.

  • QQ

Maybe we could type ‘ass’ only for this article because even SLAM thought that their beloved ‘Big’ really made a complete ass of himself by saying those things.

And puhlease, don’t defend him by saying that it’s just his, ehrm, ‘personality’…

    No class.

  • http://firemitchkupchak.com Reggie Evans

I wonder why teams get tired of Shaq?

  • http://www.nba.com hursty

lol at everything. lilziah is spot on. He promised nothing else. We should just call him the ‘Great Achilles’. He is a great warrior/fighter who can deliver but he’ll hurt (death) you in the long run.

  • http://www.ctinternational.com Paul

Riley’s definitely no saint in this. He’ll go back upstairs and build another team that in 5 years will be winning in the playoffs, but the guy lacks class & loyalty. His passion for being in the public eye and being seen as the super-coachhas got to be the biggest in the game. Similar to Shaq who sets double standards wherever he goes. Dude needs to accept he’s old and the game is moving on without him. He’s been lucky that he’s been able to get traded to teams at the right time, but this is his last stop before he becomes an embarrassment.

  • http://www.BostonSportsCorner.blogspot.com Boston Bomber

Shaq is getting old and over the hill. It is about time he gets ready for commentating or golf. I used to like him when he was breaking boards, slapping Kobe and making Fu Shnickens videos. Now he is a Grumpy Old Man who has just looked face to face at the end of his career. No more championships with the suns.. Sorry

  • islandfella

I despise this Shaq dude. She destroys good players, starting with Penny. It’s amazing the attention he gets, and that people do not recognize that he’s a major jerk. His butt must really stink, cuz I’ve been smelling it all the way out here in the southern Caribbean. Just go away quietly Shaq. Kobe (even with his flaws) has always been more mature, anyway.

  • ditto

wow.. this dude’s a frickin psychic, and it doesn’t even took 5 years

  • http://www.facebook.com/rhys.baidoo Rhys Baidoo

haha crazy, maybe its pat riley himself

Bro, you are freaking amazing. Can you predict the winning lottery numbers as well?
