Worthy of Your Attention

Lakers @ Rockets

by Marcel Mutoni

From time to time, the schedule makers bless us with ‘must-watch’ games: Suns/Spurs, Celtics/Pistons, plus a handful of others. While those are fun and resemble playoff games most of the time, I get a bigger kick out of the games that pit megastars against one another, and force fans to draw a line in the sand (so to speak).

On Sunday, we have such a matchup: Lakers vs Rockets. But in many ways, it’s really Kobe vs. T-Mac. At the moment, L.A. and Houston are 1 & 2 in the brutal West, and there’s a good chance that H-town will be riding an incredible 21 game winning streak into the showdown (they’re playing the Bobcats tonight for crying out loud!)

While no one seriously ever debates who’s the better player anymore – Bryant has eaten McGrady alive enough times to end that argument – their one-on-one battles may be even more enjoyable to watch than say, Kobe vs. LeBron. This is mostly due to the fact that both guys accept the challenge of guarding one another for 48 minutes.

There’s a lot riding on this game – from Playoff seeding, to homecourt advantage until the NBA Finals, not to mention the preservation of an historic winning streak – and best of all, the outcome will be decided by which of the two assassins on the wing comes out on top. As a certain Cowboys receiver might say, getcha popcorn ready!

    watch gasol steal the show.
    kobe for the win

  • Kadavour

this game really has the potential strengthen either player’s MVP candidacy. should be fun.

    when’s the game again?

  • Captain America

    Lakers will be victim #22.

  • RV

the good thing is, even if the rockets lose somehow tonight, it should still be a good game given the seedings

  • http://spaceshipjaymyspace.com Spaceship Jay

I agree with dez. Kobe and McGrady are going to try too hard

  • RV

Landry should still be out, i was hoping he’d get a chance to show the country how good he is

  • PhilG

Do we get the privilege of hearing Van Gundy analyze the action on ABC? I hope so.
Bench Mob will be the difference.

  • Mike C

I agree that this game’ll have a big impact on who gets the MVP this year.. Should Houston win this game and extend the streak some more after that, T-Mac will and SHOULD become a legitimate candidate along with LeBron and Kobe..

  • RV

yeah i believe its the jvg team

  • Andrew

C’mon Mac! Show kobe whos boss!

  • http://www.firemitchkupchak.com Reggie Evans

Kobe would tear up Camp Chen-a-wanda.

  • RV

Anyone know if gasol really rolled his ankle? I read he severely sprained it, but source isn’t reliable

  • Marcel Mutoni

the injury god hates the lakers with every fiber of his being. ugh.

  • RV

    so how bad is it?

  • Marcel Mutoni

no clue, dude. we’ll probably find out later tonight or tomorrow. but it looked nasty.

  • WhaHuh

    Bynum plz

  • RV

the buzz around this game may die overnight the way this night is going, Gasol out and houston can’t score in almost 10 mins, we might not have a streak and 2 incomplete teams.

  • RV

i guess both teams were incomplete to begin with though..

  • http://www.nba.com/ hursty

rv, we got it. its ok. 89-80.

  • Weapon X

    T-Mac is a beast!
Skip To My Lou has been doin’ his thug dizzle too.

  • RV

We got it, but the last 3 games they’ve been out of it most of the game. Against the Lakers that isn’t goin to turn out well. Tmac also had to play the whole game, even with a night off he’s gonna be tired.

  • Orlando

When Tracy shoots 50% and over from the field, the Rockets have only lost twice this season. Him shooting well is usually the key for them to win. When he shoots better he takes less shots to get his 25 and gives out more assists.

  • RV

im looking at the standings and cant believe it, 5)Spurs 6)Phoenix 7)Dallas…..crazy

  • http://www.nba.com hursty

believe and u can achieve RV.

  • William

Umm sorry to spoil the ‘matchup’ but Kobe and T-mac won’t be guarding each other. Well Kobe will most likely guard T-mac but Shane Battier will most likely guard Kobe. Laker’s fans it’s called karma, steal Gasol lose Gasol. I have no sympathy with Bynum because we lost Yao and Kobe well his nothing compared to T-macs injuries.

    LAKERS VS. ROCKETS on Sunday

At least rockets got up to 21 in a row
there going to lose to the LAkers

  • http://tadone.blogspot.com TADOne

With no Pau, the Lakers just may be the Rockets 22nd straight victim now. The Rockets will definitely get way more respect if the can come out of these next 5 games with either a 3-2 or 4-1 record.

  • http://www.nba.com hursty

sacramento game is in the bag. they played awful and won on a novak 3 but thats the game huh? theres at least 1 win, they can get the boston game i think, only lost by 4 @ boston so it could be there. KB24, do you think theres a slight chance that your opinion is biased?

  • RV

No respect for those games TAD, West is out, Gasol is out and so is Allen.

  • RV

I was watching video from today’s media session during practice, the lakers had to practice at 24hrfitness type gym because of scheduling conflicts, so he mentions that he wished they could have had a real practice and got a good run instead of being on a 40 foot court, menawhile in the background the lakers are playing horse and launching 30 foot rainbows…..at least they got that in, huh, phil?

  • http://firemitchkupchak.com Reggie Evans

These are like the 2005-06 Lakers now.

  • RV

i left out that was phil J talking during the media session

  • http://www.nba.com hursty

apparently phil is a good coach huh RV?

    Lakers Vs. Rockets
    AT… 3:30ET

  • AB_40

reggie uhm no, these rockets play a whole ‘nother ballgame then the 05-06 bryants… uhm lakers. They share the ball, and I like them winning this game cuzz lakers don’t have bynum and gasol and houston doesn’t have yao. These are 3 of the top 20 bigs in the nba. Houston is hotter and will try to make they mark. Maybe they’ll try too hard and lose but I like the rockets in this one. Kobe will put mutombo on a poster tonight though

  • RV

AB, i think he meant the lakers are like the 05-06 lakers

  • riggs

    anddd rockets win.

  • http://go2page3.blogspot.com Steven

skip ran wild on those dudes…this should shut up people saying he isn’t a legitimate point guard…he outscored KOBE.

  • PhiSlammaJamma

Rockets have Defense and Offense. And here’s the scary part, they have a 7’6 All World Center in Reserve after they win the title.

  • RV

that loss was on Phil Jackson completely, he was outcoached and he didn’t do his homework
