There was a certain inevitability to last night’s events. Even when the Spurs jumped out to a 17 point-lead in the early going, you never really got the sense that the series was going to head back to San Antonio.
(The Spurs were too old, and they simply didn’t have the offensive firepower to keep up for 48 minutes.)
Facing a huge deficit, Phil Jackson (as usual) didn’t seem particularly worried and left in his bench for long stretches. As they’ve done so many times this season, the bench mob trimmed the Spurs’ lead significantly, and set the stage for Kobe Bryant.
Bryant was, of course, absolutely brilliant in the second half, driving daggers into the Spurs’ hearts time and again – my favorite being the hanging fallaway over the outstretched arms of Tim Duncan late in the fourth quarter. And now, improbably, he (and the Lakeshow) are back in the NBA Finals.
It has been a surreal season for the Lakers and their fans, and though a monumental task awaits the team in the next round, right now it’s time to celebrate and reflect on the arduous journey back to the promised land.
Feel free to crack open the cigar box, Mr. Stern. The perfect ending to an amazing season is almost here.

As for the Spurs, this was the playoffs from hell – 1st the bogus plane and then the non-call, hopefully RC Buford will start earning his paycheck instead of hoping that the “big 3″ (which in this series was more like 1.5) will carry everything. Having said that, I hope Horry, Finley, Barry, Stoudamire, Vaughn, and Thomas ALL leave or retire so that SA can surround the “big 3″ with younger hungrier talent
If I were the Spurs I would give Josh Smith ANYTHING HE WANTS to bring him to SA. Furthermore, SA HAS to stop drafting from Europe, they have 2 AWESOME centers in Splitter and Javtokas of whom ive seen and Javtokas is a poor mans, younger Sabonis. AS a Spurs fan, hopefully this embarrassing loss brings about HUGE changes
I thought that you’re a pure basketball fan aside being biased towards the Heat?
anyway. what happened to ginobili? i know he had some injuries but damn, dude had a horrible series…

it’s quite a popular game internationally, actually…
way to ruin a good point. damn typo…
Look for a Trevor Ariza to give PP FITS on the defensive end, while Kobe will calmly contain Ray Allen. Boston’s success will rest solely on Garnett’s ability to consistently put up big numbers, the game he fails to come through big, the Celts lose against these Lakers. It’s a given that Kobe WILL get his against this Boston team even if they try to relegate him to a strict jumpshooting attack. He’s only been hitting 50% from the field these playoffs afterall.
Lakers in 5 vs. either team.
Rico’s comment reminds me of all the other 13 year olds that are writing into SLAM magazine these days… :/
