Jermaine O’Neal is a Raptor

By Ben Osborne

I’m sure Mutoni will be all over this tomorrow, but for now I just wanted to get the big news up on the site…I also like that this story is by my man Bruce Arthur, he of the very solid three-point shot. I’m not a big fan of O’Neal’s at all, but he could be totally revitalized outside of Indiana, and the Raps obviously needed to move TJ Ford, so I guess I understand it.

What do you guys think?

I think it’s brutal. Unless JO is motivated to be second banana to Bosh.

I think it’s a GREAT move for Toronto. They acquired a legitimate All-Star center for their backup point guard. Has that EVER happened before? I know JO has stuggled the past five seasons. But people forget that this guy was the best player on the leagues best team (record wise) just four seasons ago. He came in third in MVP voting that season.

    * I know JO has stuggled the past *few* seasons.

I’m 4th and thats all that matters about this subject and this player.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Dacre Dacre

Nuggets just got rid of their pick (2oth) good move, there aint NOTHING after the top 15 players go this year.

  • http://letsgolakers.com Andy A

Great move for the Raptors depending on JO’s health and motivation.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I hope he comes back and has a monster season next year.

  • jr724

If JO can sacrifice the spotlight for Bosh, then this will work out great for the Raps. We needed some interior toughness and especially on the defensive end. Hopefully Jermaine will continue to block shots like he has.

  • Bubba Chuck

The Nuggets traded the 20th pick

  • Alain Elie

Great deal for both teams..esp raps…they’re going to make some noise…they got the best frontcourt in the east (other than magic)

  • Joe A

Good move if JO’s healthy. Then Barnagni can move to the 3, which should be good for him.

    Godzilla or godzooky?

Here are some of my thoughts on the JO trade, as written as a facebook wall post to my friend 2 days ago:
“I’d be more open to the JO trade if:
-We weren’t planning on giving up our 17th overall draft pick this year
-Jo didn’t have the knee(s) of a 23 year veteran fluffer
-Jo wasn’t going to weigh us down with his huuuge CO…NTRACT”

Now, with that said, and the fact that this deal is apparently going down, I wish my beloved Raptors luck for this upcoming season and hope that JO can stay healthy.

  • B. Long

Great Move for both squads. J.O. is gonna have a monster year.

  • The Answer

I love this move. Bosh and O’Neal will be a nasty duo.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

great move for toronto, even a Jo at 75% is better than no JO at all and an unhappy back up point with too much talent to only play 10-15 mins a game.

  • rand33p

the success of this trade all comes down to JO’s health… if hes healthy they’ll be solid in that conference

  • http://canadianballer.blogspot.com/ Karma

Wow, aweesome, AWESOME news. Let’s just PRAY that JO is healthy, because if he is….that’s a deadly combo up front. I’m shocked. TJ Ford is not very good, and Indiana fans will find that out soon. Dude’s out of control most of the time, and Calederon is a MUCH, MUCH better point guard than he is. I absolutely love JC. Smart move, Colangelo.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Dacre Dacre

Will Indiana still go for DJ AUSTUSTIN…(Most ever projected draft order has him around there at 11 for Pacers…), They should go for Joe Alexander if he is still there at that position. Good combo with Danny Granger for 2-3 position.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Dacre Dacre

Or a big man, perhaps a PF to replace JO (all the best to him at tronna’!)

  • http://hiphopdx.com Zee

I really wonder if this was more to just move J.O. outta Indy, of if the pacers are hoping they can keep T.J. healthy for the remainder of his productive years. And will J.O. get along with Sam Mitchell? He seems like a d-bag. But if Bosh and O’neal get it clicking…WOW. maybe second round of the playoffs? Maybe?

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

I don’t think this is a bad trade for either team. I mean, if neither of them are healthy, I still say no harm done. TJ Ford and O’Neal would not be effective where they were anyway

  • AC

Ahhhh Crap. I can’t believe you guys think this is good for the Raps. They lose a pretty decent trade bait guy, the 17th pick and consistant big depth. They get a hefty salary with a big name and busted knees. This is only good if they have another move simmering on the backburner.

  • Ace

oh man the raps are gonna be the beasts of the east next year if JO and CB4 get clicking cuz thats a front court that will be dunking on everybody and with Jose Calderon running the offence they will for sure be the best

  • Gumdrop

I already posted this in another column, but I want to be in on this discussion, so y’all gots ta feel me again:

It’s insanely ballsy, but I’m in favour of the J.O. trade from a Raps Perspective and here is my reasoning:
1)Your trading for a player who carries a risk of injuries while trading away a player who carries a risk of injuries (plus Rasho’s expiring contract)
2)A year from now the Raptors have a massive expiring contract to use as trade bait, provided the Jermaine era doesn’t work out
3)The TJ/Jose situation has finally come to the point where a change NEEDS to be made. I love TJ, but its pretty clear Jose is the long term point guard
4)Raps need defence, toughness and rebounding…they’re not going to get that from Boris Diaw
5)If Andrea finally turns the corner, or J.O.’s knees give out, it’s only for 1 year

  • Gumdrop

I’d also like to append #5 by saying that if Andrea does turn the corner and J.O. holds up, 3 good big men is a nice problem.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

AC, JO’s contract is over in 2 yrs, rasho has 1 more year, but TJ had 3 yrs at 9 mill, so JO’s contract isn’t a big deal, they get rid of TJ’s contract longer and get a shot blocker, which i think is the key here, they know JO isn’t an all star anymore, they don’t neede him to be, if he can compliment Bosh with 12 and 9 and 3 blocks its more than enough, which he definitely can. don’t forget this Toronto team is already pretty deep, Moon, Delfino, Graham, Bosh, Bargnani, Kapono, Parker, and Calderon, that’s an 8 man rotation, with Jo its 9. All they need is a decent backup center.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

snd that #17 pick, perhaps a good player is available then, but no way he’ll get any time to develop on a deep team.

  • Chukaz

The Raptors just f*cked the Pacers. Think about it for a second. Best case scenario, JO is healthy and goes back to being a 20 and 10 player. Worst case scenario, JO sucks. If JO sucks they loose a year, big deal. After this year he will be owed like 22 mil for the following season, which means that JO’s bad contract all of a sudden is a positive. 22 mil in expiring contracts can get you player in this league and if they keep him for the last year of his deal they will have a sh*t load of free space for the summer of 2010. 2010 is gonna have some really good players (Bron, DWade). Again, worst case scenario, they get a shot at Bron or DWade.

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero Dma

this is some great nows. two of the most overrated bigs in the game on the same team. good luck getting everyone on the same page. JO will only bring the team down IMO. the only good thing is that someone was stupid enough to take on nesterob*tch.

  • niQ

this is an interesting move.. as long as JO can stay uninjured.. raps finally putting the pieces of the puzzle together.. next season will definitely be interesting

  • davidR

should be a good move both ways. with jo gone, indiana can stick to small ball. ford/lil dunn/granger/murphy/foster should be a decent running team with loads of offensive weapons. that back 3 is going to give the east major problems. plus murphy can stick to playing pf with rasho around whenever foster gets into foul trouble. if tinsley magically gets healthy this season, wonder who’s gonna start point?

  • davidR

on the raps side, it sucks they gave up their pick. they’ll also need to find a backup pg, but that shouldnt be a problem. jo should have a breakout season, but i wonder what its going to do to bosh’s game. assuming jo stays injured for most of the season, its not like the raptors didnt get by with their current big men (rasho rarely played in some stretches). but a team of cal-de-ron/parker/moon/bosh/jo, with bargnani coming off the bench should make some noise in the east. like i said, should be a good move both ways.

  • davidR

indiana is now the team to trade with if your team has players with potential but aren’t happy, or cant get it done. see the trade with the warriors for example. maybe the joe dumars needs to get in contact with larry

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

At least Bird got another white guy.

  • will

I really hope TJ has a huge breakout season.

  • Josh Grover

Now all the raptors need to do is pick up aaron bruce in the draft at the PG spot and they will be set

  • matt

i think a good move for both teams, if TJ and JO both stay healthy … and JO and CB4 together … nice frontcourt with andrea or moon or parker …

  • Woz

O’Neal and Bosh will dominate the East, watch Bosh with Tema USA and you will see he can play will all star’s so having a all star center and PF will be no problem with Jose dropping dimes. if my man B can work out how to get Ron Ron in town the Raptors will battle the Pistons and Celts next year for the east final. oh how all the dreams start on draft nite.

  • Captain America

Russ, oh yea, T.J. is a white guy?!?

  • Captain America

Why is Rasho still in the league? Anyone?

  • CB4eva

    Jermaine defense player next year!!!!!
    Chris Bosh MVP!!!!!!!!!
    Calederon hands out most assits!!!!!!!!
    Bargiani plays well for once!!!!
    Jamario wins dunk contest!!!!
best year to be raptor fan!

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Calderon is starting! That is all that matters. Let’s see if he lives up to the hype. So what happens to Bargnani?

  • Jonathan

I think that is going to be a hard team in the East now; Bosh, JO, this is going to be crazy

  • riggs

@Cap: he was talking about rasho

  • rav

toronto have a backup pg coming from slovenia i think, so they dont need to draft one

  • Paps

Toronto’s going to be a tough match up next year.

  • http://www.myspace.com/linkstigatorkevin Kevin Wilson

JO’s always wanted to be the No. 1 guy, but he doesn’t have enough intangibles to escape second banana status. I think, whatever the Bosh-JO combo looks like, the Indiana situation had grown stagnant and this is probably a trade that should have been made a year ago.

  • iLL wiLL

    Bargnani will continue to suck.

  • http://www.blogsketball.com Chris O’Leary

    Who’s Bargnani?

  • clangelo

bargnani sucks , we should trade him istead of teh 17 pick

  • Mitchell

I am just wondering who the raps are planning to back up Calderon…
its not like martin is going to hold up as a solid #2 p.g.

  • mio

i would start: O’Neal, Bosh, Moon, Kapano, Calderon.

Kapono i would start because there will be a whole lot of double team in the post area. Kapono, will just spot up like its out of style. It’s a good range. Bosh, Calderon, and O’Neal can shoot the 18…while we have a gun slinger beyond the arc who would be just waiting to take that shot AND he can shoot from anywhere on the court. Besides, he being paid 24 million…i would start him regardless. As for Moon LOL – he too can join the block parade and add few crammers as well. This will be a good team and i see them going to the semi finals at the least.

  • mio

    Roko Ukic will be #2
