Yao on the Artest Trade: Petrified, Yet Cautiously Optimistic

by Marcel Mutoni

Even if you don’t care for the Houston Rockets one bit, you sort of worry about Ron Artest’s addition to the team. It’s only natural; when a combustible element is added to an already dicey mix, everyone is forced to sit up a little straighter.

And this applies not just to the media, fans and casual observers; the players are equally anxious. Take Artest’s newest teammate Yao Ming, for instance.

The Houston Chronicle brings us the big man’s thoughts on the stunning trade:

“We worry about the new attitude to the team. We are adding talent to the team and we need that, but building team chemistry is important. This is not bad. I don’t mean he is not welcome to Houston. But a new player always needs some time.

“There’s worry. Obviously, yes,” said Yao. “We will think about it, of course. Hopefully, he’s not fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands.”

I would honestly pay good money for a ballsy Rockets staffer to sneak that amazing quote into the team’s media guide next season.

The Ron Artest Experiment in Houston is going to be fun, yes?

1st and this trade can definitely make housten a 2nd round play-off team.

  • Mojtaba Reza Posted: Jul.31 at 9:06 am
    so i was 2nd and now 3rd

  • Allan Posted: Jul.31 at 9:14 am
    Yao! artest in houston

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Jul.31 at 9:19 am
These are some of the greatest quotes ever uttered by an NBA player. The combination of his much improved but still not natural grasp of English, the cultural differences that have apparently kept him from being turned into a typical NBA cliche machine, and his honesty… wow.

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.31 at 9:25 am
Why don’t you just kiss him, Ryan

  • James The Balla Posted: Jul.31 at 9:31 am
YO SHAWN KEMP TO PLAY IN ITALY, get on it SLAM!!!!

I’m waiting for Mutoni to post Ron Ron’s response. It’s amazing.

  • Sparker Posted: Jul.31 at 9:59 am
yao’s a funny guy. on that last bit, i’d guess he was joking (and just learned something about what happens when journalists choose to leave out context). but my big hope is this: when the rockets play the raps, ron ron and jo do a re-enactment… vs. each other

  • Marcel Mutoni Posted: Jul.31 at 10:02 am
on the way, eboy. on the way. ron is amazing for blog fodder.

  • TADOne Posted: Jul.31 at 10:02 am
    Fantastic!

  • Captain America Posted: Jul.31 at 10:06 am
Yao is afraid of Ron-Ron’s foot up his azz.

  • Eboy Posted: Jul.31 at 10:07 am
    Can’t wait!

  • Eboy Posted: Jul.31 at 10:14 am
Save your fantastics until you see Ron’s response, TAD. For real.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Jul.31 at 10:31 am
Keep your eyes on the Top News slot, fellas. Ron-ron’s response is minutes away…

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Jul.31 at 10:32 am
Also: for the last few years the Rockets really struggled to capture my attention. Those days are over.

  • Captain America Posted: Jul.31 at 10:34 am
    It’s the “culture” thang

  • Captain America Posted: Jul.31 at 10:35 am
Coach Rick’s gotta gem goin’ and he knows what he’s doin’

  • Jukai Posted: Jul.31 at 10:44 am
I am going to wait for SLAM to post Ron Ron’s response but every second that passes, my urges to go out and google this increase tremendously

  • Captain America Posted: Jul.31 at 10:52 am
    Rafer v. Ron-Ron…it’s on

  • d.Y. Posted: Jul.31 at 11:07 am
This is gonna be like Rush Hour, but funny!

  • RV Posted: Jul.31 at 12:17 pm
that last remark about Artest not going into stands, Yao was smiling. The sac bee reporter was the one who told Artest what Yao said and i’m sure the reporter wasn’t smiling. Yao quickly squashed what the reporter started. Yao’s comments weren’t even taken seriously until the sacramento bee Q and A.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jul.31 at 12:53 pm
it was a joke, and ron was also joking but i still think its funny how people take it. Ron Artest is China’s boogie man

  • DP Posted: Jul.31 at 1:26 pm
Yao is real. but I would rather earl boykins have my back brawling than the peacemaker. but he makes good points so I don’t have a problem with it.

  • BXBALLA Posted: Jul.31 at 1:34 pm
I think that last statement by Yao was pretty unnecessary

  • Khalid Salaam Posted: Jul.31 at 2:08 pm
rockets getting outta 2nd round? i’ll believe it when i see it

  • Khalid Salaam Posted: Jul.31 at 2:10 pm
I meant getting outta the 1st round of course..but thats my point. How are people talking about them being a championship team when reaching their potential involves winning just 1 round of the playoffs. Whatever dude. Rockets haven’t mattered since Dream left.

  • RV Posted: Jul.31 at 2:54 pm
Khalid, is it tmac or the rockets you’ve had a problem with throughout the years? I dont think this is just about you disagreeing with this weeks posts.

  • Ta!ented Posted: Jul.31 at 11:25 pm
Artest can def. show Yao how to man up. I dnt know if Yao really sound “petrified” but whatever, I think Ron Ron is gon be aight in Houston

  • Dacre Posted: Jul.31 at 11:38 pm
think of it in terms similar to Dennis Rodman going to San Antonio and then to Chicago…He did ALOT better for the good of those teams then bad…and he was ALWAYS an aside to whatever was going on on the court…
Ron Ron and Houston will thrive this season…BUT they wont get to the Western Conf. Finals.

  • Sanjeev Posted: Aug.1 at 12:54 pm
Well, Yao is quite an insightful chap if I might say so myself. He is correct about team chemistry and adding such a variable element like Ron Artest is bound to force the team to rebalance its chemical equation. But surely, after a while the team – if they can play up to their full potential – will be amazing. It will be another superstar West Coast team like the 3 or 4 we had this year.

  • Streetball Posted: Aug.2 at 1:34 am
Ron Artest adds some much needed toughness to the Houston Rockets. They get a strong defender and a great team player in Artest.

  • mitch Posted: Aug.2 at 4:15 am
so I suppsse its over for ron in sac town? Awe well hopefully kirk and nocioni can come and visit the kings. For good

  • WOOOZE Posted: Aug.2 at 8:52 pm
Lucky Yao’s 7’6, cos otherwise he’d be in hospital right now.
