John Amaechi Discusses the Kobe ‘Incident’

by Marcel Mutoni

For a guy who had a fairly forgettable NBA career (dude averaged a little over 6 ppg for three different teams), he’s gotten quite a bit of ink in the last few months. Oh, right, he’s (gasp!) openly gay and seems to sort of enjoy the attention. Never mind.

Anyhow, Dan Steinberg of the DC Sports bog was kind enough to send along his interview with John Amaechi, in which they discussed Amaechi’s recent “encounter” with Kobe Bryant and other members of Team USA in China (among other things):

So let’s get this out of the way up front: the actual “incident,” which Amaechi had already explicitly described on his blog nearly two weeks ago, involved Kobe seeing Amaechi through the window of the team bus as the U.S. team headed towards the media center for their introductory press conference.

According to Amaechi, Kobe then mouthed the words “what the [bleep]?”"I was lip reading,” Amaechi told me. “Not that it’s one of my particular talents, but some things you can tell.”

So, he didn’t actually talk to the guy (or any of his teammates for that matter); he read lips through a bus window and concluded that they were all feeling “derision, amusement and contempt” at the sight of a gay former basketball player. Riiiight.

Hope you’re enjoying these long 15 minutes of fame, John.

Perhaps Kobe was just surprised to see him in Beijing? While the Slamonline family is apparently a homophobic one, Amaechi really creates the vibe where suspicion becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in that he suspects so many to be unwilling to accept his particular lifestyle, therefore creating a situation where others are uncomfortable around him. While warranted to an extent, dude over does it.

  • Young Chris MP3

And apparently I’m a little late to the party, although I’m glad we’re actually thinking today and not just going crazy over this post…

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Now, didn’t say this needed to be treated cautiously? John has a tendency for the dramatic and the news media loves controversy. It’s crazy that he based a long as quote on Kobe saying WTF. Kobe could have been talking about some fine broad standing right behind John.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Seriously though, this is bad. I’m glad the cat from DC followed up on this.

  • B. Long

Honestly, I think TEAM USA is more disgusted at his exploitation of a socially sensitive subject than by the fact that he’s actually gay. I mean, Kobe plays in L.A. do you really think it’s possible for him to be homophobic and even function on a regular basis there? John needs to find something to do with his life other than try and make all NBA players look like gay bashers just to bring attention to himself. I’m sure none of these dudes would even think twice if Ellen invited them on the show.

  • B. Long

I wish that the entire roster of TEAM USA would get off the bus next time with megaphones screaming I LOVE ALL GAY PEOPLE! JOHN PLEASE COME GIVE US A HUG! just to make him look like more of an ass than he already is.

  • http://www.lifehoopsthoughts.blogspot.com the baconator

Amaechi reminds me of Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, someone who uses their differences to claim prejudice against themselves. Just because he’s gay doesn’t automatically mean that everyone hates him. Dude’s just being a drama queen and attention whore

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno character should give John a taste of his own medicine.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I suggest reading Steingberg’s blog. Amaechi was very honest and open about how this whole thing got blown of proportion and admitted that there are several reasons why Team USA might not be his best friend. Sexual orientation was one of them, but he listed two others higher. Amaechi is an arrogant cat, but he’s intelligent. I just wish he would stop mentioning Leviticus. That makes him look Bible illiterate.

  • H to the Izzo

B.Long:I’m sure there’s isn’t one homophobic person in LA.Nope, not one.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Just back from a long lunch. It’s a beautiful day in Central Pennsylvania — about 80 degrees, relatively low humidity for this time of year, not a cloud in the sky.
On this, I don’t have much to say, other than that John apparently a) wrote about this on his own blog, which pretty much no one other than his friends and family is probably reading, and b) his take on the situation (flawed or otherwise) only came to broad awareness when TWO DIFFERENT NEWSPAPER REPORTERS ASKED HIM ABOUT IT AND WROTE ABOUT IT ON THEIR OWN BLOGS.
    So there’s that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

And hey, Allenp makes a great f*cking point, which even my man Mutoni apparently overlooked (by choice or not, I do not know). Here’s the rest from Steinberg’s blog post, the same one we’ve picked and chosen from today:

So obviously, this was not that big a deal, in the grand scheme of things, as Amaechi readily acknowledged.
“Now what’s interesting about this, is once it went into the mainstream press, how people have responded to it, as if I’m accusing Kobe of being a homophobe, which I’m not,” Amaechi said in a video follow-up this week. “I’m simply saying that some very basic lip reading meant that I didn’t think that he or anybody else who kind of tweaked the curtains on that bus was particularly happy to see me, and its not like I expect them to be….”
“I just think it got blown a little bit out of proportion. I will say though, I always tell my friend Jeff never to read the comments that are left on blogs, because they’re devastating a lot. And I made the mistake of reading a couple of the comments left on one of the basketball-type web sites [this one, I'm guessing], and they were brutal. I mean, they really were. But anyway, lesson learned, once again: don’t read the comments.”
And the bracketed reference to “this one”? Yeah, that’s a link to Slamonline! Which is awesome! We win!

  • B. Long

@H: I’m not saying that there’s not. But Kobe is doing buisness with people in hollywood on a daily basis which is a diffrent enviroment than just your everyday citizen of Los Angeles. Besides he did a video with the dudes on Jackass and they stick things in each others butt on the regular. So I’m pretty sure Kobe would be fine around normal gay people.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I’ll assume everyone here is taking 5 minutes to read John’s irrational, accusatory ranting in the interview with Steinberg. He sure is a big crazy g@y guy, isn’t he?

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Baconator, most white people do hate Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Quite a few black people dislike them as well. And the main reason people dislike them is because they are constantly talking about racial issues. If you look at both of their careers, there have been very few times when they have spotlighted an incident that didn’t have some semblance of a racial angle. However, despite their track record, people have decided that their complaints have no merit. Whenever they get involved in an issue, a large segment of the public decides they are against the issue simply because Sharpton and Jackson are for it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    Exactly, eboy.
I once worked with a gay who claimed — and he actually wrote this in a newspaper column — that he wasn’t homophobic, he just didn’t “like” gay people in the same way that he didn’t like people who smoked pipes. (I don’t actually think he was trying to be funny with that comparison, either — he really just meant people who inhaled tobacco through a pipe). Apparently his take was that he didn’t have any problem with “those people,” he just didn’t like the things they tended to do — you know, acting all kind, and not apologizing for it.
He was also a raging alcoholic who wore the same pair of p*ss-stained khakis every day I worked there, which was about a year and a half. He was a pretty awesome guy to work with.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I find it interesting that Amaechi has a job that has nothing to do with sports. It’s pretty unusual that he doesn’t use his athletic past to advance his present in anyway. And while Amaechi’s career numbers are wack, that’s because he pretty much quit trying hard after one or two good season in Orlando. He was actually a fairly skilled big man with a nice jumper and post moves. He was a little plodding, but he was a good backup at the 4 or 5. Too bad he hates sports.

Doesn’t matter where I fall on the scale, but you seem to make statements like that a)because you can and b)to be unapologetic to portion of the white population that doesn’t jibe with the white’s you so despise that caused the inconsolable rift between whites and blacks that has exsited for decades.

But, let’s use your 80 percent number, do you think that 80 percent of white people in American either hate the Revs. or seriously dislike them? Seriously, you took offense at me using the word most, but I’m wondering if that was just to score cheap debate points or because you really believe that most white people do not strongly dislike Sharpton and Jackson. And you’re right, I do make statements because I can, I thought that’s what everybody did on message boards.

Basketball is my favorite sport, both the men and women. Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus are beasts. And Eboy, I still would like you to answer my question about Sharpton and Jackson. Based on your experiences, how do you think most white people feel about them? You have more expertise on the private feelings of white people than I do, but I’ve found that a substantial portion of the population vehemently dislikes the Revs. Anytime I write a story that mentions race or prejudice (that’s for Izzo) in any form I get random comments condemning them.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

And I understand that it’s irresponsible for me to ask you to be a spokesman for white people, Eboy. If the situation was reversed I might have gotten offended. • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

And Allen, to answer your question, I would think that the percentage of white people that don’t like/respect the Revs would be somewhere in the 65% range. A good portion of them don’t know the basics of their stance on topics they support so it should be an innaccurate total because of denseness from them as not knowing what they’ve done in their respective pasts. To be clear, though, I respected Jesse up until the mid 90′s. I never could stomach Al for his constant media presence regardless of the battle he was fighting.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Don’t remember who said it, but for a couple of years in Orlando John was a above average big, I totally agree. I think him hating BBall have more to with him not having a better career than a lack of skill. Also all of Team US know who John is, Tim Bug made sure of that.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

On his blog (which Russ has plugged) Amaechi never says that Kobe said “WTF.” He says Kobe’s facial expression said WTF. Anyway, y’all should read his blog. Primary source and all that jazz.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

LZ, I made the comment about John’s career. Anyway, I’m going to say once again that cats need to read John’s blog. He really has some strong feelings about how he’s been received by other basketball players. My first reaction was to dismiss it, but then I just compared his feelings to feelings I often have as a black man in America. (And not Jukai this is not the same as what you do.) Anyway, it’s a pretty interesting look in to Amaechi’s psyche. I don’t agree with every conclusion he reached, but I can understand how he reached them.

  • ciolkstar

His “face said”? That just makes his assumptions that they weren’t “glad” to see him all the more ludicrous. How does he know any of that? How were they supposed to react to a 6’8″ ex player running alongside their departing bus striving for some extra meaningful eye contact to write about in his blog? His plan has worked though, over 100 comments and I even went ot his blog for a second…the best part is the pic of him sitting next to that huge statue.

I think what just called John an uppity gay man. That’s pretty cool.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

The comment by “what” contains both some truth and some horrible idiocy. Amaechi’s disdain for NBA players is evident. I’m sure it’s a combination of his own superiority complex and his insecurity about being a gay man in a setting that is not friendly towards gay people. However, as a fan of NBA players, his attitude can be off-putting. Yet, I don’t think that is a justification for ignoring the truth behind many of his statements. However, “What” said that his comments legitimize people hating him and make other gay people look bad. that’s ludicrous. First, nothing he has said legitimizes hating him. Nothing. He’s done nothing that is “hate-worthy.” Second, if you honestly think that the actions of one gay man can make all gay people look bad, you’re an idiot. Point blank. Unless you apply that standard to everyone in your peer group, and assume that their poor actions make you look bad, then your comment is totally ludicrous.

Can that be done on the internets, Lang? I’m all for it.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Allenp I must say I really agree with you today.

  • http://sdfjkl.com Jukai

Allenp, I just pissed on a picture of Allen Iverson then burnt it. Go after me on that! Go!

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Kunal if you’re out there, congrats on today I’m guessing you did great, and start typing comments you little b1tch.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I wrote a blog about what you’re doing right now as well Jukai. It’s called “It ain’t a Joke” I believe. Plus, I don’t care if you dont’ like Iverson personally, I just care when you deprecate him as a player. Respect The Answer’s game.

Kobe was probably say a cashew vedor on the Beijing Streets, just past where Amechi was standing, and said to his seatmate “want some nuts?”…..easily confusable….guess thats still can be contrued as gay…i tried

All I got from that was Misty May.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

This is a wild comment thread. Anyways, I don’t think Amaechi was necessarily trying to say that Kobe dissed him, in my mind, Amaechi needed something to write about to keep getting his paycheck, and it just so happens that this was the only interesting thing that happened to him that day. He can’t get paid if he’s talking about cruising around Beijing shopping. Am I right, fellas? Fellas?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Mo: Amaechi isn’t getting paid to write his blog, nor is he getting paid to answer reporters’ questions. So…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

but he does have an endorsement deal, so the more publicity…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Ok, I give up. Clearly, he’s blogging negative things about one of the four or five most popular athletes in the world AND encouraging all these newspaper reporters to interview him — he’s probably calling THEM, actually, unsolicited — AND opening himself up to all this criticism so he can be more “marketable.” That does make sense. If I were a little less dense, I’d have figured that out a while ago. I am sorry.

  • H to the Izzo

All these theories make sense….untill you take into account the fact that John Amaechi is smart.

  • http://www.lifehoopsthoughts.blogspot.com the baconator

Hopefully Amaechi will read this comment thread and see SLAM isn’t a bunch of gay-bashing haters, but an intellectual group with opposing viewpoints

  • http://www.lifehoopsthoughts.blogspot.com the baconator

On a side note, I”m with you RV: Misy May is hotter than hell

  • http://sdfjkl.com Jukai

He’s gay, you know, so if you wanted to hook up with him Ryan, which it clearly looks like you do, then he’d be all for it. Go for it buddy, don’t be shine.

  • http://sdfjkl.com Jukai

    shine = shy

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Another great point about gay people: They’ll just hook up with anyone if the equipment fits!

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

We don’t get paid to blog? I’ve been wasting my life!

  • H to the Izzo

I wish women were gay,I’d never be turned down.Pity.

  • http://sdfjkl.com Jukai

I love how you respond to everything with a sarcastic comment, Ryan. It’s like, the best way to get a point across, and it makes you look smart too.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Ryan, all gay people also have british accents.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I know, Jukai—works like a motherf*cker, too. The fact that you’ve picked up on this bothers me, though. I may have to have you eliminated.

  • Marcel Mutoni

wait, gay people have blogs now? sheeeeeeeit, next they’ll want voting rights. /shakes head in disbelief.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Here, I’ll be sincere: I wish so many of the people who commented here weren’t a) stupid, b) ignorant, c) hateful, or d) some combination of the above.
The problem is, when I do that, I sound mean. I mean people suck. I saw that on a bumper sticker.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

With sincere apologies for the extra, unnecessary “I” in the post above.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Oh, snap — Jukai, you actually DON’T love how I respond to everything with sarcasm, do you! Dammit. You totally got me on that one.

  • H to the Izzo

    The Off season is fun!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Back in the day, Izzo, we might say we were having a gay old time.
    Goodnight.

  • Marcel Mutoni

story time: so, i was out last night at a club here in ottawa. in the booth next to where i was sitting, two girls began randomly sucking each other’s faces.

they were reasonably cute, so i was transfixed (as was pretty much everyone else in the room). chatting with them a few minutes later – hey, you never know. am i right? – they informed me that they’d hooked up that very night, and did this sort of thing all the time.

i have no idea what the point of this story is, or what it has to do with john amaechi, but i thought i’d share. g’nite!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Ryan, i was just trying to point out publicity wouldn’t be bad thing for him, but obviously this doesn’t send sales through the roof….Baconator, Leryn Franco is really where it’s at.

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

Mutoni, pictures or it didn’t happen

  • Diesel

This is completely late on the topic but Eboy – Misty May looks like Skeletor now. She used to be nice but she’s slowly turning into the Krypt Keeper.

  • Diesel

I saw a gay guy once. He smelled like sunshine.

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

Oh a serious note though: Mutoni, Ryan, Izzo, TADone, Young Chris, Eboy, Russ, Sab, everyone else, thank you on the positive input on this post, even if it was entirely sarcastic. The last one pretty much had me utterly puzzled and disappointed, and it’s good to see that there are some posters who wont start bashing gays the first chance they get.

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

The last one being the last article that Amaechi was linked in.

  • 1hush D

It is a tight race for as*hole of the week – Is it the self-absorbed Amaechi? Is it the homophobic, egotistical Bryant? Or is it the drama queen Mutoni? A very tight race from my viewpoint.

  • http://nba.com/celtics/ Moose

@ 1hush D: i think calling mutoni a drama queen is a bit over the top. but then again, he is a laker fan . . . :-)

  • TADOne

Damnit, Jukai thanked me! Does this make me slightly gay or just bi?

  • http://fjsdklf.com Jukai

    Slightly?

“First, nothing he has said legitimizes hating him. Nothing. He’s done nothing that is “hate-worthy.” Second, if you honestly think that the actions of one gay man can make all gay people look bad, you’re an idiot.” Way to misinterpret my statement. I never said that +I+ think he makes all gay people look bad. I said that it’s not surprising that people would form that perception based on his actions. A reading comprehension class may do you some good.

  • http://www.ballerblogger.com Brandon Hoffman

I don’t doubt that Amaechi could have sense “amusement” or shock through a bus window. After all, it’s not as if Amaechi is a basketball analyst in the States. The last time anyone on the team even thought about him was when he revealed his is gay over a year ago. But contempt is a pretty strong emotion. I doubt a third party looking through that window would have come away with that impression.

  • http://www.slamonline.com The Frozen 1

WTF is this gay character doing at the olympics? Shouldn’t he be like someplace else or something & why the hell are we talking about him? He’s gay!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com The Frozen 1

I feel a lil’ gay for just reading this.

  • Drew

What, I am a lawyer and an author. My job and my hobby for the last twenty years have involved reading comprehension. There is no way to read this comment as not repulsive:

People like him make all gays look worse.

Hitler tried to act on behalf of white people, did he make other whites look bad? How about Charles Manson, who was trying to start a race war on behalf of whites?

  • http://www.nrl.com.au Money Bill Williams

frozen 1, who gives a f*ck if he is gay, nobody on this post does, they hate him for other reasons such as slandering the league and thinking he’s top sh*t

  • http://www.nrl.com.au Money Bill Williams

so if the body of your arguemen is just “He’s gay!!!” then you can go f*ck yourself for having such an absent mind. Do i think homsexuality is wrong: YES I DO I ADMIT, it goes against all religion, but i ain’t got a problem if others choose that life, coz it aint none of my business. Neither do the other posters here, you shouldn’t either

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero Dma

sports are homophobic because society dictates it. you’re supposed to be this manly type man to play the major sports. do you know how many closeted gay kids played high school football or basketball? no guy, gay or straight, was to be called soft especially in the world of sports. i used to ball all the time at U of Oregon and sometimes some of the guy cheerleaders would run too. i remember one time the guys on the cheerleading squad just ran these one guys 11 to 2 or 3. and the whole time the team that lost kept talking sh*t calling them f*gs and the nonsense. i lost my point..

  • http://www.nrl.com.au Money Bill Williams

the point is that frozen ones ideas are short sighted and downright stupid

  • Bryant Reeves

“Baconator, most white people do hate Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton” (AllenP – 2:08pm). “if you honestly think that the actions of one gay man can make all gay people look bad, you’re an idiot” (AllenP – 3:25 pm). Either AllenP has interviewed all white people, he is a hypocrite, or is the golden example of the pot calling the kettle “gay”.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

    Yawn. WTF indeed.

pfft. we all know only reason kobs said WTF because thats what jordan wouldve done.

  • http://slamonline.com Deno

I think him and Jose Canseco should elope, change their names to Mr. and Mr. 15 minutes!

  • RedRum

we are not informed of what Amaechi was wearing… it is possible that he was wearing pink leggings, a red top and a huge red hat. kobe saw him and went, WTF??? on another note, the commenting on British TV on the basketball games is hilarious. They have a couple of guys, who were also doing the NBA commenting, and they try to explain the game to the Brits. We hear comments like: ” shots behind that line count for 3 points, the rest of the points count for 2″; “the point guard is one of the most important players on the court, he is the organiser, like beckham in football…”

  • Mendel

I’m sure this is one person who is very very excited to watch Barkleys new reality gig.

  • iain.

i have to say amaechi and whoever the other guy is have impressed me with their commentating today, they got rid of the crusty old posh dude who commentated in Athens. He came out with some classic (terrible) lines.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Bryant Reeves, obviously you missed my discussion with Eboy, but the word “most” does not mean “all.” Thanks for playing though.

  • eyehatedirk

One time at a show I went to that my friend put on he had a mailing list to sign up for if you wanted to receive emails regarding future events/bands being booked. The column next to it was labeled “sexual preference”. I filled in FGT for mine.

  • Jose

they should all wear t’s with a rainbow but put “not gay” under it but to show they dont hate john ,under that put “but supportive”

  • CoolWhip11

Just to be clear, we’re still making “tell me how my a@@ tastes” jokes right?

  • Ohpityme

Haha I doubt Kobe would know who he even is anymore.
Dude needs to get over himself no-one cares.
Only way this ‘story’ should be on here is if Kobe Bryant had thrown Tim Hardaway at John Amaechi wolverine & colossus style!
Funny thing I was watching this programme a while back about UK B-ball and it had John Amaechi on it and said he was a nba hall of famer…..hahahaha!

  • Bryant Reeves

AllenP – the difference between judging “most” people and “all” people based on the actions of one or a few people doesn’t make the conclusion anymore legitimate.

  • steve downard

maybe kobe was like wat the f.,. is john doing here its not like kobe wont know who he is he probs dunked on his fat ass a few times

  • mytake

We’re the ones giving John’s story all the attention. Let’s move on and I’m sure he will to.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

goddamm!!!! ignorance, ignorance, ignorance. I am not known as slamonline’s intelect, and when John Ammechi first annouced he was g@y, i had some things that would have made great headlines at a GOP fundrasier/hate party. But since then i have made great friends with this le$bian chick, and we have really bonded. She has opened my eyes that h0m0sexuals are the same as us and deserve our respect. The way some of yall were posting, i question whether you were sent here by Fox ‘News’ or not. Seriously, stop the hate on these people. They were born that way, they cant change it just like i cant change the color of my skin. Sure i could bleach my self and say i was white, but under it all i am as dark as Manute Bol. And no i am not g@y, no i am not some nut, but i got respect. Jesus, them nuts come out when i am gone.
