Josh Smith to … Memphis?!

by Marcel Mutoni

Atlanta nearly shocked the world last spring by pushing the Celtics to an improbable Game Seven. Next year, they could return to being completely irrelevant.

And it’s not just the fault of the Greeks; citizens of Atlanta would have the Memphis Grizzlies to blame, too. From the Commercial Appeal:

The Memphis Grizzlies have sent a contract offer worth $58 million to Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent Josh Smith today, according to multiple NBA sources.

As the only team left with significant room under the salary cap, the Griz have shifted out of a summer holding pattern and targeted the versatile 6-9, 235-pound forward.

The Hawks have seven days to match the offer from the Grizz, and seven days to keep the suicide rate in the A where it currently stands.

wow, didnt see that one coming

  • Bran

First. I could see this working…Big Al and Smoove frontline would be crazy.

Atlanta would be really stupid not to match though

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

rudy gay and josh smith would be by far the illest 1-2 anywhere

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

plus oj mayo. this needs to happen, sorry hawks

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Atlanta was just waiting for a team to do this. They will match it. It’s a shame becuase Josh does deserve more.

  • Mike

but they already have rudy gay whats the point of this move?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Was this for 4 or 5 years?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The Hawks COULD match that, right? I mean, it’s only $58 million, not $70 or $80 million. Isn’t Josh Smith worth more than Luol Deng?

  • Ken

If they lost both Joshes this summer, A fans would just have to quit. Especially after seeing what Philly did with their cap space and this free agent market.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

It’s presumably for five years. The Hawks should easily match this (provided it’s not massively front-loaded).

  • Beyonce

I love it!! Josh Smith and Rudy Gay…..a powerful combo.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

$58 mil for 5 years is ridiculously low for player of Josh’s ability. Leave to the Memphis Grizzlies to show everyone that Atlanta doesn’t have the worst front office in the L.

  • Blue

Tad: This is the same team that traded Pau Gasol for a Bean Burrito and the Corpse of Kwame Brown…what did you expect?

  • Blue

Jerry West is rolling over in his grave…

  • myspace.com/klement32

    dayum…
josh smith, rudy gay, and o.j mayo!?
    nice..

  • B. Long

    HOLY BALLS!

  • Bran

    Lol, misread as TWolves.

Gay Smith Mayo is f*king sick.

  • Jessir

that’s true what tadone says, like trading pau gasol for nothing.. and now $58 mil for 5 years.. for Josh

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

@TADOne: I agree. Why would Memphis think they’d land Smith for a salary lower than what the Bulls are paying Luol Deng?

That said, I bet this deal is front-loaded.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

my comments were 1,2,3. how did those others get there. they werent there at 10 44est.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

josh is worth more than 58. luol got 72 right? and ben gordon wants what 70? ha

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Why couldn’t the Hawks have offered Smoove the this type of money outright?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Good question Ryne. I’m quite sure Lang, Myung, or Co Co could write you a complete dissertation of how inept the Hawks management is.

  • Captain America

    Hawks gotta match that.

  • Michael

doesn’t he actually have to sign the offer sheet first before they match?

  • niQ

the only way this would work is if oj mayo decides to play point guard.. cause although josh smith gets blocks, he’s far too versatile to play power forward.

  • B. Long

There just trying to sign him so they can trade him to the Lakers for Chris Mihm and a box of milkduds.

  • Yann Blavec

    Oh merde !!

  • Darion Martin

this is alot of bullsh*t THE HAWKS BETTER MACTH THAT LOW A$$ OFFER AND LETS GET BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS

  • underdog

Although, I think ATL gonna mach the offer, it’s funny to think about Rudy Gay and Josh Smith playing in the same team. Memphis would still su*k big time, but the games would be filled with fireworks.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

niq, far too versatile to play power forward, thats just stupid. he has played the 4 more than 3. if it happens, mayo is 2, rudy is 3 and josh 4.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Real quick, yes the Hawks can (and probably will) match. From what I understand, the Hawks didn’t want to sign Josh to a contract that was more than he could make on the open market. Word was Smoove’s people wanted $12 mil a year, though I haven’t confirmed that with his folk. The Hawks’ thought was why pay anyone more than they have to pay them? This deal ends up just a bit less than $12, which I’m sure is making the Hawks ownership group do backflips.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

And you guys arguing about his position…Josh is a four, plain and simple, until he proves he can knock down jumpers, which he hasn’t proved yet.

  • http://www.shawnkempsoffspring.com Tariq

    Come to LA, Josh.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Waiting for another team to make an offer is probably the financially prudent thing to do (which appears to be the Spirit Group’s MO), but not the best way to treat your players.

  • http://www.shawnkempsoffspring.com Tariq

OK, so the situation is this: either the Hawks DON’T match, and he signs with Memphis, or they DO match and keep him. Are there any other possibilities? Could he wind up being part of a sign-and-trade?

  • Michael

so has he signed the offer sheet? can he still take a qualifying offer and wait to be unrestricted next year?

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

    lang, check links from yesterday

  • Adam T

Okay, so assuming the Hawks do match this, I wonder what Josh Smith is thinking..? He is already fed up w/ the Hawks and now he has to sign a 4 or 5 yr contract w/ them for $58 Mil…I still feel like there is a chance that Smith says nah – not signing it, and does something else, because I just dont think he wants to be a Hawk much longer..take the qualifying offer and hit the open market next year..although his stock is pretty darn high right now.

  • fdsfds

josh smith, oj mayo, and rudy gay. Love that trio

  • B. Long

@Tariq: I love the thought of Josh in purple and gold, but I wonder how he would fit into and how quickly he would grasp the triangle offense. Definitely would be a gianormus upgrade on the defensive side for sure.

  • blackjack

It doesn’t say Josh signed an offer sheet with the Grizzlies, he could easily just reject that weak ass offer and go play in Siberia

  • http://www.shawnkempsoffspring.com Tariq

    B.Long:
I don’t think he’d fit into the triangle offense very quickly, but I like him, and I like the Lakers, that’s about as much thought as I put into it. I’m still recovering from Baron Davis not going to the Lakers.

  • B. Long

WORD! B-diddy is my favorite non-Laker and I actually believe he’ll have the Clips fighting for that 8th spot just like he did the Warriors. What the fu(k was Mitch worried about? The Luxuary Tax? Jerry Buss eats taxes like that for breakfast.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

    do you miss turiaf?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I didn’t take Tariq long to fall into Laker fantasy land, that is for sure.

  • Krishan

So he basically has three choices then? Sign with memphis, sign with atlanta, or become an unrestricted free agent next year right?

  • B. Long

@Tarzan: I miss him more as a good person on the team than I do as a good player on the team, if that make any sense.

  • John E. Sanford

Man if this happens, get the Tivo’s & DVR’s ready brother.

  • a_whiteman

josh should just take the qualifying offer and bolt next year cuz hes getting the shaft from a team he helped rejuvenate

  • Hawks Fan

If the Hawks don’t match this offer, then I am done being a Hawks fan, SIGN J-SMOOVE!

  • http://www.joshsmith.com iLL wiLL

Damn. I don’t wanna see JSmoove go to waste with the crappy Atlanta Hawks team. No offense, but that team won’t be going anywhere. Yeah, they had a nice little run last season, big whoop. Like a_whiteman says, take the qualifying offer and bolt next season. Why would Smoove want to stay on a team with Woody and inept ownership?

I dont think there’s any way the Hawks won’t match but its definitely a lowball offer. Josh deserves better. I guarantee his agent is telling him that if he has a strong year and stays healthy he’d be able to make a lot more next year. Sign the 1yr tender! Dont sell yourself short JSmoove!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Oh sh!t!!!!!!!! Rudy Gay, OJ Mayo, Mike Conley Jr., and Josh Smith?!?!?!?! Dag son, thats a talented team.

  • http://www.talkaboutsport.blogspot.com TalkAboutSport

This is not surprising…Memphis must have freed a lot of their salary cap with Pau Gasol. I think Josh Smith was a great player to pick up – young, versatile, very talented. As for the best young teams it would have to be either Portland or Memphis right now. @Teddy-the-Bear – this is going to be one nasty lineup!

  • j-smoov 5

here comes the high flying memphis. DAMN!

  • tinchek

atl will match it. that’s not even that much money. i mean, bogut and okafor got like 70 for 5 years. and josh is better than them

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics/ Moose

wow. memphis in 08-09 could have rudy gay, oj mayo, and maybe josh smith. young and beastly.

  • http://yaomania.com Wendy

Don’t forget Darko. It’s time to break out.

  • tike

yes J-smooth is worth a little more than that but i’d take it if i were him….oh and Luol Deng is worth what he got..

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

tinchek, I don’t think you fully realize the ineptitude of the Atlanta Spirit Group.

  • Tyler

Josh Smith on the hawks could be crazy! But who do the grizzles have as a big man? The starting lineup would be.
    conley/mayo/gay/smith/? WOW!

  • Ohpityme

Surely Josh Smith is worth more than Luol Deng?
Why didnt Memphis offer him 6 years @ $80 mil?
A starting lineup of Conley,Mayo,Gay,Smith and who cares at centre would have been biiiggggg!!!

  • scott henderson

so what the hell is it, is he going to the euro league,or is he gonna go to the grizzlies
