Larry Brown on Team USA’s Gold

“The thing is they got guys that are willing to make a three-year commitment, which I think is tremendous,” Brown said of this current Team USA. “We had guys that committed (for 2004) and then all of a sudden 9/11 happened, and then there were injuries.”

(“Also, I wasn’t involved this time around. That’s key,” Brown did not necessarily add.)

    Rudy Giuliani? Is that you?

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Good grief did he just blame 9/11 for his failure in 2004?

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Yes he did, Larry Brown, the anti-Rudy.

  • Mendel

Larry Brown should have more class then to give some lame exuses. nine/eleven WTF? It seems he may have been the reason they lost.

i still think its funny he had them practice with nba balls not olympic balls. thats practice the right way

  • C

Not to be excusing Larry Brown in any way, but for context, what he was referring to was having a bunch of key players refusing to fly overseas after 9/11. Then again, that doesn’t explain why players agreed to play in 2003 but not 2004, when the tragedy happened in 2001.

  • roc

what brown was saying, was 10 out of the 12 players for 03 did not show up for 04 ;they part together a squad in July. love this 08 team, but they would have lost to with one month to play together.

Larry Brown, the anti-Rudy? You must have never heard of New York City. Unless you’re talking about Tomjonavitch. F*ck Rudy.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Actually i was just referring to Larry Brown’s use of 9/11 in this context. Anti Rudy since Giuliani named (“while i was mayor in NYC during…”) that disaster a LOT while campaigning for the oval office a few montha ago. He kept praising himself on the good job he’d done during that crisis, while Larry’s blaming it on his failure.

  • http://dyalekt.com d.Y.

oh… i see… excuse.. Giuliani incenses me for that 9/11 ish and other thangs..

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

@d.Y. That i can totally understand. Annoying guy. Just like larry b. from.

  • K.I.N.G.

LB is a hata, if he was the coach this year we would be bronze all over again. I hope the bobcats are excited!

  • drew

    larry brown is an idiot

Gonna go ahead and agree with Ryan here.

A column praising commitment, anchored by quotes from Larry Brown. The irony is so thick you could pour it on mashed potatoes.

  • http://Spaceshipjaymyspace.com Spaceship Jay

Giuliani happened to be standing there when 9/11 happened. He did NOTHING special, at all. Zilch, Nada, Zero. And Larry blaming 9/11? That’s pretty @#$%^ low. Giuliani did more on 9/11 than you did for the Olympic team.

  • LA Huey

Good one, Kevin Wilson. Larry prolly would have bailed on the team in Vegas right before the Canada game.

  • Shut up already!!

Some of you sound silly in here talking crazy about Larry Brown and taking what he said out of context. What Larry Brown was saying was that the Athens team was NOT the original team that was supposed to go. The original team U.S.A blew everyone out in the qualifying rounds and would have been favorites to take home the gold. After a lot of players backed out (for personnal reasons and security reasons which is why he referenced 9/11), the only players that kept their promise and went to Athens that were left over from the ORIGINAL team were Duncan, Iverson and Richard Jefferson. The rest of that 2004 Athens team were players added on last minute as a result of all the other players backing out. The media wants to continue to pull the wool over everyones eyes and just dog the team for getting bronze and act as if they didn’t care about international play.. they don’t give the facts and instead they A.) ridicule the only players from the original team that were 100% committed to Team U.S.A. (Duncan, Iverson and R. Jefferson) and B.) ridicule the players who gave up their Summer last minute to go try to represent their country as a result of everyone else backing out. Giving what that team went through, i’m surprised they even pulled it together to bring home the bronze. Team U.S.A has had problems in international play since 2000 anyway. The team finally won gold again, be happy, get over the past and move the hell on. Larry Brown wasn’t “hatin”…he was keeping it real. Even Coach K said that 2004 team didn’t have enough time to practice and that was a big reason behind them struggling.

I didn’t know Larry Brown himself was a SlamOnline commenter. What’s next, John McCain discovering how to Google stuff on the internets?

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    Kevin Wilson’s comment was wonderful.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Shut Up Already also had a good comment, although I still blame Larry Brown.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

for that 9/11 comment, Larry Brown is now Larry Giuliani

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Larry Brown had Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony, and Amare Stoudemire. He kept them nailed to the bench (because he hates young players) in order to give major minutes to Richard Jefferson, Lamar Odom and Stephon Marbury (who he had threatened to send home before the Olympics even started). F*ck Larry Brown.

  • David

“Also, we lost because I was busy taking offers from the Greece to help them rebuild their team and possibly coach in Lithuania.”

“But at least I’m not Isaiah Thomas. Just the guy he hired.”

  • Charles

I will never forgive Brown for not playing James, Wade, Anthony and Stoudemire. When has Brown not had an excuse for something, from leaving detroit hanging to leading the Knicks to their worst record ever? The funny thing is I was comparing him to Guliani three days ago. And not in a good way. F*ck both of them. I feel sorry for Bobcat fans.

9/11 was in 2001 mr brown

  • chintao

    Somebody should 9/11 LB’s house.

  • Scotnasty

Fellas, let me remind you of something. Larry Brown is the guy who told Peter Holt and the Spurs’ management, “Either he goes or I go” back in the early ’90s. He ticked off Reggie Miller in Indiana. He so poisoned his situation in Detroit that there are no pictures of him related to the 2004 title at the Palace. The dude ticked off The Admiral, Miller Time, and Joe Dumars. There’s no need to say “F*ck Larry Brown”, because he’s done it to himself more times than we care to count.

  • Scotnasty

My bad. What I meant is that he made David Robinson go to Holt and say that either LB goes or Robinson wanted out. But I see “Larry Brown”, and I get ticked ANYWAY.
