Just take a look at their team picture. Yikes.

This really helps Spains rep as a racist country doesn’t it?

  • http://sdfjkl.com Jukai

Since B. Long declared me an asian man, I am very offended by this

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

i dont think the americans will have any problem seeing the ball, with their big american eyes! hahahahahaha

  • the Birdman

    Stay classy, Spain.

  • Exile

Why digital pictures in an internet driven world are a bad idea for any type of team/ military function/ party.

    Shaq’s impersonation was better.

  • tinchek

  • ciolkstar

Wait a sec, jukai is NOT ASIAN?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Hard to believe not one person on the team said “hey, maybe this isn’t such a good idea.”

  • riggs

thats like wearing black face if the olympics were held in africa

  • Godzilla

    not cool, spain.

  • http://nbaukfan.blogspot.com/ mat smith

wow, like really wow, I did that when I was 6 years old, apparently if a photographer asks you to pose you do it, kinda like paris hilton, oh dear…..

  • Jackie Moon

Are there not many Asians in Spain?

  • B. Long

@Jukai: Dude, I could have sworn that you said that you where Asian on here before. I’m sorry if I offended ya. What nationality are you if you don’t mind me asking.

  • http://dyalekt.com d.Y.

It took me a while to get this. Pretty stupid, but fairly benign. If the Chinese team is vex, I hope they knock Marc, Paul, and the Gasolinas out of medal contention.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

It’s a good thing Pau Gasol won’t have a Chinese guy on his team next season. Oh, wait.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

I hope there is a video to go along with this, with impressions included.Hopefully Spain aren’t half assed racists.

  • B. Long

I’m half Native American and Irish, which means I love to drink but it’s almost impossible to get drunk, which is both frustrating and expensive.

  • B. Long

  • Marcel Mutoni

the only positive to take away from this is that at least it’s not as bad as spanish futbol fans mocking black players by making monkey noises.

wait, that doesn’t really help all that much here, does it?

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Well i never liked Pau Whineface Gasol anyway, but after meeting Calderon and Garbajosa in Rome last Fall, i came away a fan of both players. This “Ad” is just plain ignorant. And Marcel? No it doesn’t help much. Stupid a** Real Madrid fans!!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The China team should wear sombreros on the medal stage if they somehow get there.

  • http://sdfjkl.com Jukai

B Long: Not offended at all, all you did was give me the gun powder to launch that joke on top. I’m Jewish American.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

“I’d like to use my credit card!”

  • Captain America

Perhaps we are the only country that is racial (hyper) sensitive, eh?

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Oh, those wacky Gasol brothers. What sort of hijinks will they get into this week?

  • http://dyalekt.com d.Y.

    Cap: um… no.

  • Keith

Ah the Spanish, you’ve got to hate them.

  • Jackie Moon

The strange thing is, the Chinese team did the exact same thing with their fingers in their team photos

  • http://www.slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

    I blame pau

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

try pulling that on TEAM USA

  • Sarah

Wow. That’s… I don’t really know what to say about that. Pretty ignorant, but what ya gonna do with ‘em?

  • B. Long

Maybe all their eyeliners started running at the same time?

  • B. Long

I hope Sun Yue bangs on Pau.

  • Diogo

Depends where you’re from actually. In my country, depending on the context, obviously, it wouldn’t be viewed as a sign of racism. Actually, you won’t catch a grown man doing anything remotely like this, it’s more like a childish thing, kids trying to upset one another. Maybe it’s a racial issue in countries where races are segregated to a point where minimum things like these become racially abusive (see USA, most of Europe). However, doing some sort of monkey impersonation would be extremely offensive to black people worldwide because african-descendants were/are segregated everywhere.

  • Dallas J

    they play joke

  • Yunki

No such thing as racism in Spain

  • Boing Dynasty

I agree with Dallas J, they play joke.

  • http://jaredmintzisthetruth.blogspot.com Jared

i’m over it…who cares? is this a politically correct message board? that team has like 5 good point guards, they can ball

  • http://www.shawnkempsoffspring.com Tariq

Actually, the fans who racially abused Samuel Eto’o were, among others, mainly Zaragoza fans. And Espanyol fans threw bananas at Issa Kameni, THEIR OWN goalkeeper!

But the Spanish FA really showed that such nonsense is not to be tolerated. They hit Zaragoza with a six HUNDRED dollar fine. That’s right. $600. So racism at football games: $600. Bullsh*t fines for said racism: Priceless.

  • B. Long

These guys should read posts from Khalid more often. lol.

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com Hersey

Dios mio. I want Spain to catch a Lakers/Celtics Game 6 style beatdown now.

  • niq

its called conformity.. i guess one person decided to do it and cause everyone was doing it (and thought it was ok) then everyone just followed along.. but still.. bad move.

  • http://washedupplayer.blogspot.com/ RiseKing

I remember when the head coach of the Spanish Soccer National team was picked up by some camera crew at a 2004 practice calling Thierry Henry a highly derogatory name. It led to Henry start the “Stand Up, Speak Up” program to combat racism in soccer.

  • knowsense.

    thats pretty messed.
i thought that humans couldnt get uglier than pau gasol
    then i saw this brother…

  • http://firemitchkupchak.com Reggie Evans

Marc Gasol is the next Joe McIlvane

  • Noel

    Jared. You’re an ignorant moron.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=627550406 KA

holy crap, i actually had to read the article to confirm what i was seeing. i was ‘huh? hell naw…OH NO THEY DI’NT!’

  • http://pretendingtohaveanownwebsite.com Art Vendelay

    Two other examples from soccer:

Former Atlético Madrid president Jésus Gil y Gil once traded colombian striker Adolfo Valencia, adding “lazy n****” in his, well, goodbye (if you can call it so)…he also was a supporter of Franco, even having built a statue for him…

Former Spanish national team coach Aragonés once told striker José Reyes: “tell that stupid n**** you’re better than him”, referring to France’s Thierry Henry playing on his position in the Arsenal squad…(even though Aragones also had Marcos Senna, a native brazilian, on his squad during the EURO 2008)…so, after all, is it really wrong to call Spain a racist and bigot country?

  • http://pretendingtohaveanownwebsite.com Art Vendelay

at least, there aren’t many reasons (very few, to be exact) to like the spanish squad now besides them playing good basketball…I wonder how the chinese team may react to that…Yao in a torero dress?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

China was so amped for that game. Marc Gasol is clutch btw. Bad foul by Ricky Rubio but he got that stop, great job by him to knock it off China and get it back with 5 seconds to go.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

OVERTIME!!! Rubio was so unlucky with the floater though.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

In all honesty, as an Asian person, I’m not really offended by this at all. I don’t think the Spanish basketball team and their media/marketing guys are collectively racist; I do think some drunk soccer hooligans in Spain are. It’s just really silly of the Spanish team to have done this photo, just a really really bad idea since they’re just begging to be misconstrued – given the horrible reputation that the Spanish have from the numerous soccer incidents. A ridiculous, embarrassing faux pas – but really, nothing more.

  • RedRum

I would like to see Rubio getting drafted by team in a city with a big Asian population…

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

If ever they did something like that to Filipinos, they’d be banned from our country for sure. it would create massive outrage from pinoys from every part of the world including Spain. since I’m also Asian, I’m offended by their little “gesture” of sorts whatever they call it.

  • Myung Lee

Racist and immature? Yes. Am I offended? Yes. But it is what it is. I don’t think the Asians who see this photo are going to cry to Al Sharpton and Jesee Jackson about it. I’m just as offended by what half of you guys (including some SLAM staffers) write on here, especially since things got underway in Beijing. I guess if you serve your racist eggroll in a witty wrapper and dip in some humor sauce, it’s all good… right?

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

is it all good? no not really. but even as a chinese, i find this photo to be hilarious. there’s always a fine line between funny and offensive. i used to be in an asian american theater group and we’d make fun of stereotypes. we’d pull the same stunts as these guys do here, though i suppose it’s different because the context and purpose is different? so is that what makes it acceptable?

  • Myung Lee

What up, Albie. I guess one person’s funny is another man’s not-funny. I didn’t find the photo to be hilarious at all. I find it to be really offensive, actually. I don’t mind someone cracking on Asians, per se. As long as (1) you’re also able to poke fun at yourself (a la Dave Chappelle) (2) you make your racist joke funny. I laugh all the time at comedians who make fun of Asians. It’s usually in good fun. But when it’s done like this… I’m sorry… I just don’t see any sort of humor in it.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

yo Myung! i think they look so stupid in the picture, it makes me laugh. then again i have a really odd sense of humor.

  • ace

What’s up with americans being so racially sensitive. I honestly can’t see any racisme in this picture. Can’t understand many y’all reacting so strongly to this..

  • Kilo

It’s racist too me..I dare anyone from Spain or the Spanish team to walk in to any china town or asian town in America and pull that move while saying ching chong ching…Hell, do it in front of the guys with the tatoos and hard stares..If it isn’t racist I dare any non Asian person to walk into an Asian Pool hall or bar and do it in front of some Asian gangsters…the shooting or stabbing was just a joke..lol so sorry!

I can’t wait until Pau Gasol walks into China Town, Korea town or Little Tokyo…oops it was a joke that your tires got slashed..haha. too funny..

I hope that Shaq or Pau check their Chinese take out or Sushi next time as the employees might think it’s funny to add “special ingredents” like spit..oh but don’t be offended or grossed out..it’s just funny!

Fight Racism by any means necessary.
