T-Mac Tempers Rocket Excitement With Injury Talk

by Marcel Mutoni

With the arrival of Ron Artest, excitement over the local pro hoops team is at a fever pitch in Houston. Some people are even thinking this squad can challenge for a title.

Not so fast, says superstar Tracy McGrady, his body isn’t exactly in mid-season form.

From the Houston Chronicle:

“My knee is about 75, 80 percent right now,” McGrady said. “It took longer than expected. I was expecting to recover 100 percent in four months, but (ellipses) the doctor told me it would be six months or even more.”

“My shoulder had after surgery kept bothering me. I had another MRI and discovered I have arthritis in there so I have to have surgery again on my shoulder. That’s something I have to deal with again this season, but my knee should be ready by opening night.”

Man, talk about a buzz-kill.

The Rockets have yet to play a single minute in the 2008-2009 season, and I’d bet that a large segment of their fans is already depressed. Way to go, T-Mac. It’s all your fault again.

    Has he ever been healthy?

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.30 at 1:10 pm
Frailty must run in the family.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 1:11 pm
Why can’t my favorite player just stay healthy? Why? This is a great buzz-kill before the season even starts.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 1:12 pm
@Tad..Vince’s problem has more to do with his heart.

  • k.o. Posted: Sep.30 at 1:17 pm
HA! Tad ur on a roll today dude

  • Rockets fan Posted: Sep.30 at 1:28 pm
Im not upset or depressed, we still have depth and its not about getting an early start, I will judge this team by the depth when the playoffs begin. It must be really nice to have 20 mil in the bank annually

  • overtime Posted: Sep.30 at 1:32 pm
    i miss orlando magic t-mac

  • fluxland Posted: Sep.30 at 1:32 pm
“Bailout not being passed. It’s my fault!”
“Palin being a complete clown. It’s my fault!”
“Media talking about LeBron to NY 2010″ It’s my fault”
I mean, c’mon with all the weight this guy carries around are we really that surprised he has shoulder and knee problems?

  • niQ Posted: Sep.30 at 1:46 pm
see artest? shoulda came to toronto!

  • Static Posted: Sep.30 at 1:48 pm
Not the “fault” thing again…chances are they deflect the blame to Ron-Ron no matter what anyway. T-Mac’s not 100 and neither is Yao yet, so it may be a while before they get to peak

  • James The Balla Posted: Sep.30 at 1:55 pm
That sucks, T-Mac use to be my second favorite player. Now … i just feel bad for the guy.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 1:56 pm
@James don’t feel bad for T-Mac they will get out of the first round this year.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 1:57 pm
    McGrady>>>>>>>>>>>>Carter

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 2:00 pm
and he wonders why its always his fault….once again, i blame his trainer. Tmac lifts heavier weight than he’s capable of because he uses momentum to get it up, resulting in sloppy reps. Hello, arthritic shoulder.

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 2:02 pm
Hursty, whenever u check in, i’m just finishing up the Rockets preview on the blog..send me an email too, can’t find your address

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 2:02 pm
This is why players shouldn’t jump straight to high school. Think of how much better shape Tracy’s body would be in if he had spent a couple years at college.

  • scott Posted: Sep.30 at 2:06 pm
@B. Long…I hope your joking. Things have turned out okay for Garnett, Bryant, Stoudemire, James and Howard.

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 2:09 pm
B., i dont think thats the real reason, who else has had problems? KG, kobe, are holding up. Maybe Jermaine, but Tmac’s training isn’t helping him strengthen his joints.

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 2:13 pm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY91oQiq5zo, that video always makes me shake my head, the leg press is about the only thing that was done at a good speed and form…

  • Rockets fan Posted: Sep.30 at 2:19 pm
TMac will be fine and niQ hell no Artest is where he is supposed to be yall got Oneal.Artest can score like TMac so Tmac wont have to work as hard 4 baskets anyways jusk ask Pierce

  • Eboy Posted: Sep.30 at 2:32 pm
I have suicide watch for Hursty narrowed down to 4 days, 35 minutes and 18 seconds.

  • LeeVan Posted: Sep.30 at 2:32 pm
Master P/everyone in the basketball World-”Ugghh, it ain’t my fault.”
    Mystikal/TMac- “DID I DO THAT?!”

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.30 at 3:06 pm
all that fun he had at Camp Che-Nowawhateveritscalled has done this.

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 3:08 pm
off topic, but when the hell did the kings get new uniforms???

  • riggs Posted: Sep.30 at 3:34 pm
so we must hate tracy because his body is having problems that he cant avoid?

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 3:51 pm
My 2:02 comment was complete sarcasm. Click my name to find out more.

  • dfrance Posted: Sep.30 at 4:08 pm
Anyone ever consider that his body is just not cut out for the rigors of professional basketball… Is that crazy talk?

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.30 at 4:29 pm
    Yes, that is crazy talk.

  • Krishan Posted: Sep.30 at 4:40 pm
    Awww someone needs a hug

  • Dice Posted: Sep.30 at 4:49 pm
    Houston we have a problem

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Sep.30 at 5:10 pm
scott: if you get a new favorite player, you might be alright…

  • key21 Posted: Sep.30 at 5:33 pm
t-mac 09 playoffz here we come

  • Moose Posted: Sep.30 at 6:00 pm
Where’s Hursty on the Rocket’s post???

  • MyKal Posted: Sep.30 at 6:07 pm
Hursty is busy performing emergency surgery on an arthritic shoulder, hoping to give it enough time to heal before the season tip’s off.

  • The Frozen 1 Posted: Sep.30 at 6:15 pm
T-Mac’s best dayz are behind him. Championship – that is never going to happen in his career unless he understands what he is now…. a role player. He is weak & gettin’ older.

  • The Frozen 1 Posted: Sep.30 at 6:17 pm
I mean I’ve probably just caused the poor guy another injury by my comment.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.30 at 6:19 pm
TRACY! Say it ain’t so! Aww man, just jia you I guess… Our Rockets need him!

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 6:36 pm
LOL at MYkal..My video finally got moderated, its somewhere in the middle of these comments, its a video of Tmac working out, his form when weight training is no better than the average Joe who’s gone to the gym for a few months now. That’s pathetic considering he’s a pro athlete with his own trainer. His flawed reps put stress on his joints rather than strengthening them.

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 6:40 pm
Dfrance, you make a good point in away, his body isn’t naturally built for the physical NBA play, BUT with the proper training he could transform his body to be able to take the pounding, unfortunately what he’s doing isn’t it.

  • T WANA Posted: Sep.30 at 8:44 pm
he probablay doing what paul pierce did in the finals only before time. With ron artest and Yao,you ask me and and T-mac doesn’t need to worry about getting injured( Hopefully they can get past the first round of the playoffs with T-Mac,RA and yoa staying healthy.)

  • Dacre Posted: Sep.30 at 10:11 pm
It could be an age-injury quandry… Since I’ve been 28 (for the past 4 months now…) I’ve had more injury’s relating from my basketball playing than in the previous 14 years combined?!

  • Orlando Posted: Sep.30 at 10:27 pm
This sucks….but I feel he will be healthy…he’ll bounce back quick….

  • T WANA Posted: Sep.30 at 10:45 pm
T-Mac needs to realize he’s the role player for the houston rockets. he needs to suck it as I did while playing during my season on a bad left knee and a bad left elbow and my team went undefeated

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 10:53 pm
I saw this come up on rockets.com and wasn’t surprised. Arthritis is something that can be managed but not ‘beaten’. At least the Rockets have depth at the 2 and 3, and have another point forward to cover him up when( and he will) misses games due to injury.
Eboy- suicide watch may be premature, but I wrote down my vital details on my wrist band and I now have a GPS tracker on my waist. Just in case.
If they stay healthy (IF), IF they have chemistry, IF they all buy into the team concepts, IF players dont try and white out the project then not getting to the 2nd round game 7 (in my eyes) will be viewed as a true failure.
1st round is expected to be ‘in the bag’.
I also think that Utah may struggle to get out of the 1st round this year.
Then its time to blow the team up, or re-sign Artest and let some of the younger guys go (Head).

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 10:55 pm
T WANA- I say this as nicely as possible, but please, stfu.

  • Hursty Posted: Sep.30 at 11:04 pm
That video made me wince so much RV. Poor form, and on that bench press, hes going to drop it on his ribs and break them. Fact that its only 90kg or (200 pounds) is really disappointing. He probably did 6-7 reps and that was his prime strength/bulk training. Awful technique=increased chance of injuries- no wonder hes getting arthritic at 29….

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 11:05 pm
Utah is a bit scary, they have a deep team, but they’re not flowing well lately and Boozer is killing them, This is his final yr i believe, so he may come back stronger than ever…i think the Spurs may actually start to decline this yr, especially with Manu being out and teams like Houston, Phoenix, and the Lakers getting deeper and younger. Hell, even Portland might give them fits.

  • RV Posted: Sep.30 at 11:16 pm
Same here Hursty, not sure what his trainer is thinking, if he kept lifting the same weight, but used strict form, he’d fill out a lot more without wearing himself out. But as lanky as his frame is, if you put heavy weight at one end and throw it around, the joint on the other end is gonna f*ck up. You don’t see Yao’s trainer letting Yao do that, and he’s got skinny arms too. If tmac has Yao’s trainer, he’d be giving Kobe some competition.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.30 at 11:21 pm
I deeply hope to see our Rockets manhandle the Jazz in next years playoffs. How I long for that…

  • CP34MVP Posted: Sep.30 at 11:21 pm
Its not T-Macs fault…. i bet you if they still had Yao last year theyd make it 2 the western conference finals

  • Big Marv Posted: Sep.30 at 11:32 pm
    what else is new????

  • andrew Posted: Oct.1 at 4:08 am
T WANA – the rockets are exactly the same as your team, and TMAC is pretty much in exactly the same position as you. Did going undefeated hurt a little when you lost in the first round again?

  • iLL 949 Posted: Oct.1 at 10:10 am
hes just tryin to lower expectations. If he doesnt perform hes forgiven. If he performs hes praised. Except its all making him a loser.

  • King David Posted: Oct.1 at 1:20 pm
    he sux anyway

  • Solomon Posted: Oct.1 at 6:16 pm
Don’t forget he still dropped 40 with a hurt shoulder, and didn’t play all that bad these past playoffs. He’ll take a shot before the game.I’m more concerned with his knee and he said he’ll be fine by opening night. This is a non-issue.

  • nick Posted: Oct.1 at 6:21 pm
    damn it.

  • clintonix Posted: Oct.1 at 6:33 pm
Too bad if the Rockets play the Jazz again they would lose again and again and again. haha suckas!

  • ramil Posted: Oct.20 at 10:03 pm
man i hope he get better bcuz this is the rockets seoson
