Andrew Bynum’s Agent Didn’t Quite Get the Extension He Wanted

by Marcel Mutoni

I meant to get to this earlier, but it was a hectic day, what’re you gonna do?

Anywhoo, the LA Times reported today that Andrew Bynum and the Lakers seem to have finally agreed on a contract extension:

The Lakers and Andrew Bynum have agreed in principle on a four-year contract extension worth about $58 million, keeping their center of the future in the fold through the 2012-13 season, according to sources familiar with the negotiations who would not speak publicly.

The team has yet to formally announce the signing, but that should happen very soon.

Approximately 14.5$ mil over the next four years for a guy with Young Andrew’s talent and obvious potential, that’s not a bad deal for both sides (though, Bynum’s agent might not necessarily agree.)

In what is a very promising season, one that distractions could easily destroy, it’s nice to have this one out of the way.

For the Lakers, that’s a good thing. Maybe this will be enough bank for Drew if he stops throwing money in the air at strange women in nightclubs.

That is a lot of money for an unproven player. A lot of upside? Sure. But I don’t know about 4 years guaranteed at 14.5M/yr…

Way too much money! That’s basically the same deal that Bosh got two years ago, for a guy who has had one half of a good season. I like Bynum’s game but that is ridiculous.

i know a lot of you guys think this is obsurd. Let’s put it in perspective a little bit. Bynum’s agent wanted the MAX–85M over 5 years I believe. Had the Lakers not given him that and he didnt budge for less, he was sure to get a max offer from a team this summer forcing the lakers to match. 58M does seem like a lot right now, but its an investment. Iguodala and Deng didnt deserve their big extensions either, right? it;s an investment. he’ll be worth it soon enough. franchise calibur centers dont come around very often.

the guy kobe wanted to trade a year ago?

Bynum could be the number 2 center in the league within 2 years. Then this looks like a steal. However, if he proves injury prone and never fulfills his potential – the Lakers are still only ‘stuck’ with him for 4 years. Good move on their part, they’ll win out either way.

Fair price. Needs to keep an eye on those ankles and knees…or he’ll unfortunately be another unfortunate Sam Bowie.

Loved Barkley’s reaction to hearing Bynum would make more in four years than he made in his entire career.

Its disgusting to me to see his agent complaing about ‘only’ getting $15 mil a year during these times when most people can’t even afford to go to games. Sports salaries have gotten completely ridiculous.

i think this is more than fair…he can prove his worth to the team in the title run!

    Krayzie Bone said it.
