Andrew Bynum’s Agent Just ‘Doesn’t Get it’

by Marcel Mutoni

Andrew Bynum is 20 years old. He was a part of Phil Jackson’s starting rotation for only a few months, during which he performed admirably, and he’s coming off a major knee surgery that caused him to miss much of the previous season.

In the mind of his agent, David Lee, the Lakers should have thrown heaps of money at the young man long before the 2009 campaign began.

Mr. Lee, who’s meeting with Laker GM Mitch Kupchak today in the hopes of striking a deal, is singing a familiar tune to the one he broadcasted back in July. From the LA Times:

“I just don’t get it,” Lee said. “I do not understand certain things that happen. Andrew has taken everything the Lakers have thrown at him, including criticism. He doesn’t do anything to respond other than go on the court. He just goes on with his business.”

If the Lakeshow doesn’t sign their prized big man by the end of the month, he’ll become a restricted free agent next summer. And according to his nutty agent, there will be “consequences”.

For all of the promise that Bynum has shown, that’s really all it is: promise. Though I (and many other Laker supporters) have little doubt he will, Bynum has yet to prove that he actually deserves the kind of scratch his agent is clamoring for.

Patience is a virtue; it is also something agents have apparently never heard of.

Guys like this are why I respect Gil a little more.

Nothing like greed to fu*k up potential. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!! Get that kid a Quizno’s endorsement so he shut’s the f*ck up!

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Guys like Gil are why the Lakers need to wait before giving him all that money. Let’s see how that knee holds first.

  • Sanchez

Awesome! My first, and last, first. I love the game of Basketball but I hate the business of Basketball.

  • http://ngunioamosotho.com Nguni

the lakers shud chill a bit before giving him big money. why spend money on him if he won’t recover from his injury. let him show he is healthy, then give him a lucrative contract.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

It’s really not Andrew’s fault, agent’s are the scum of the earth.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Quick! Sign Andrew to an $80 mil contract so that it jinxes him!

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Sounds like David needs some of the same treatment that I gave Rob Pelinka at our meeting. Did that comment confuse you. Click my name for understanding.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I wrote a good story once, I should get $80 million guaranteed for anything I might write in the future. Pro sports is absolutely insane.

Slamonline = Haters. Out of all the jerks that get huge contracts and there not spit other then box score fillers through the season and this dude has shown that he is the missing link between championship and not and somehow you all hate on this nice young hard wroking young man from making bank.
P.S. But I forgot that Allen Iverson is the eighteenth best player in the leauge

I am not even sure what this kid has done in the league, so far. I’ll admit to always being one of his biggest critics, but seriously, is he better than Bogut? I would rather have the Aussie, myself.

If they are going to play that way, let him become a restricted FA. There are going to be SO MANY huge names in that pool next summer that the Lakers should be more than able to keep him for similar $$$. Consequences?
The Lakers are not an organization that works like that.

MENDEL, Bynum was the missing link?

Not so sure about that. That team was entirely different (and not looking good) when the season started and they were able to get organized midstream to be able to make it through the West. I need to see him and Pau play together.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

BLong, what about the shameless blog promotion?

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Not to mention he’s really young, he missed significant time with a serious knee injury, and he only played at a high level for a short time. If anything, it’s prudent. But hey, that’s just another word for hate. Max contracts for everyone!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Somewhere, Adonal Foyle and Jon Koncack are grinning.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I agree with Cub, everyone assumes he’s the missing link, but we don’t know that for sure. I say wait…… But, I can’t hate on him for asking for the money. We’d all like to get the most out of our employers. I just don’t think the Lakers are going to cave that easily. They didn’t do it with Shaq and he yelled at the owner during a game. Andrew isn’t nearly as accomplished so I don’t think they’ll cave just because of these lil threats by his agent.

  • donn

they need to ship his a** out!!

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    $80 mil buys a lot of Quizno’s.

  • niQ

okay. if the lakers don’t sign this man they’re will be cursed forever. FOREVER! okay. maybe not forever.. but didn’t they realize that they need him after the finals?

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

The Lakers needed a backbone during the Finals. Andrew doesn’t seem all that tough to me.

    Nice Co Co.

You know what the Lakers need?Less foreign Marys and more Charles Oakley.

  • k.o.

@TAD re: jinxing him, oooor SLAM could put him on the cover.

  • http://www.bethunebowman.com Mike

I like what donn said. They could get something good in return for trading him. Let someone else take a chance on his potential.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I actually refer to it as “shameful” blog promotion, Cub. And I rarely ever do it. You’d probably enjoy the story though. Now click my name to win a free Xbox 360!

BLong, i might if you were giving away a Sega Genesis. I can’t hang with these new systems.

  • vmcb

Tough situation for the Lakers. Throw a town of money at Bynum banking on potential, or piss him off and risk losing him to another team. Sh!t’s getting sketch.

I know you’ll feel me on this one, Cub. What about the College football game, I can’t remember what year it was, when Colorado had Kordell Stewart, Rashaan Salaam, and Michael Westbrook. I smashed people with that squad.

  • http://another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

in other news: the other David Lee will probably sign an extension in the near future. Some David Lee’s got it, some don’t.

    Tecmo Bowl. What!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

BLong, for sure, soph year in college. Option R, option L all day with Kordell and the Heisman.

    TAD, tecmo with bo/sweetness.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Gerard: I wouldn’t count on that. The Knicks seem to still want cap flexibility in the near future, and locking up Lee and Nate would negate that. They lose nothing by waiting until the summer and seeing a) how they adapt to D’Antoni’s system, and b) how the team performs.

  • namik

Am I the only Laker fan convinced that this kid is not the “Final Solution” that every one is making him out to be? Maybe if Pau F*cking Gasol would lift some weights, this guy would not be trying to hold the Lakers ransom. Sure he will help. But we need a young and dynamic PG. A big body like Perkins who puts his head down and rebounds and defends and doesn’t b!tch and moan about shots and contracts. Or how about new inbound plays and defensive schemes from PJax? Or Kobe actually playing like Kobe in the Finals? The answer lies within not without. The rest is all excuses.

  • Sean B

David Lee; hustle and contract negotiations.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Andrew Bynum COULD be a superstar big man for the next decade. Could is the keyword here. I believe in his potential but he hasn’t dominated the L yet. Let’s see what’s up with the knee before throwing all kind of dollars at him.

After this year Bynum will be London 2012

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

MENDEL, I think they’ll wait until the 2012 Olympics are kind of close before doing that. This year won’t tell them anything, what with his knee being a question and all that.

  • Sanchez

Co Co, I dunno about Bynum being soft. He took it to that “Shack” fellow a while back. Sure he’s no Charles Oakley but he does have a bit of agro in him. More so than Pau atleast, not that that is saying anything! But still he provides very good inside presence. Shot blocking, shot altering, grabs every board that goes near him, solid D = toughness.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

namik, I am a Celtics fan, and I am a huge fan of Mr. Kendrick Perkins (perkisabeast.com) but he ain’t a superstar, as Pau and all those guys are supposed to be. So he can’t b!tch about contracts and stuff, because if he did, he’d be ridiculed and what he said wouldn’t be justified/backed up.

  • Jose

    Bynum to MIA

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Bahahaha @ thesubwayconnection. Gilbert Arenas??? You think he saves his organization money??? You’ve got to be kidding me, really. I mean REALLY kidding me. Co-Sign Co Co.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Our Knicks should get rid of Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry (along with their hefty contracts), and get Andrew Bynum. Oh how that would be sweet. Also, I am still bewildered and angered that the Knicks didn’t draft Eric Gordon.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Dude averaged what? 12 and 12 for 2 months? Less? C’mon, dude is so overrated right now its just ridiculous. Pull your heads in and recognise that he just wasn’t that good to begin with. Hes easily an above average centre and thats it. Not a Shaq, Howard, Yao or even Camby to a smaller extent. Be reasonable about it please.

  • Joe_6Pack

Man someone give me a gun so that I can shoot David Lee, this guy needs to to stop trying to push the Lakers to throw gobs of money at this kid (Which is what agents do) and worry about his own career, seems like since he doesn’t have any real basketball talent he has to make up for it by getting a side hustle(not everyone can be a good big man you know) but that won’t happen because Mitch Kupatchick (however you spell it)is a very prudent owner and He’ll die before he gives bynum and his “agent” all that guap.

  • clos1881

its about market value if okafor got 72 milli and he’s never gonna be a star whats the market for a guy who is 20 with great upside he already has a better post game the dwight howard not saying he’s better even with injury concerns you gotta pay him guys like jerome james and eddy curry and diop got huge deals for being average bynum will be a all star for years yao bynum and howard and oden are gonna be it at the center spot if the lakers dont sign 20 other teams will and max him out and kobe will be stuck wit pau soft azz

  • chintao

^He’s right. Supply and demand are the only things that matter. The L is short on legit centers with potential. If they can get it, Bynum and his owner should take the money and run.

  • chintao

Freudian slip. Instead of owner, I should have said agent. Also, all that, “… there will be consequences,” junk is a bit melodramatic. David Lee, scripted by Stan Lee.

  • Gaz

Bynum’s agent wouldn’t happen to be related to BETCATS would he?
