Did Michael Beasley Net His Former Assistant Coach a Fat Contract?

by Marcel Mutoni

It’s no secret that the business of college athletics is dirtier than a Jenna Jameson tape, with everyone - from the schools, coaches, runners, and all kinds of leeches - out to milk the players for all they’re worth.

The latest story involves Dalonte Hill, Michael Beasley’s former AAU coach and the man who delivered the stud forward to Kansas State. For his troubles, Hill’s bank account is looking mighty healthy these days (especially for an assistant coach at the collegiate level). From Rivals.com:

K-State released Hill’s contract in May. The school paid him $400,000 in 2007-08, and it will pay him $420,000 a year – $150,000 in base salary and $270,000 in “additional compensation,” defined as “television, radio, internet, promotional and other services” – for the next four years. He is entering his third year at K-State.

Hill will make more money for the 2008-09 season than the entire three-man staffs at Ohio State, Washington State and Wisconsin.

Nothing comes free in this world, especially not in the world of big-time college hoops.

In other Beasley news, there’s chatter in Miami that the second overall pick may begin the season on the bench.

yup. coz if they let him start marion will again feel ignored (just like what happened in phoenix) and ask to be traded… MARION JUST WANTS TO BE LOVED

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Oct.16 at 9:19 am
of course “the school” paid him that much for bringing beasley. im a udonis fan and everything, but beasley has to start

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.16 at 9:23 am
He’ll be starting by game 8.

  • Z Posted: Oct.16 at 9:24 am
I’m all for rookies paying their dues and whatnot but COME ON, NOW. When it’s so obvious that said rookie will start sooner rather than later, it just creates an uncomfortable situation for everybody. I mean, the guy starting in his place will be looking over his shoulder at the first dead ball.
I’d like to hear Eboy on this one…

  • Z Posted: Oct.16 at 9:25 am
There you go, I’ve heard Eboy. My life is complete.

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.16 at 9:27 am
And he’ll be starting alongside Haslem & Marion in the frontcourt.

  • Squirrel7 Posted: Oct.16 at 9:30 am
First overall pick? Miami’s first, maybe…….

  • Bo Diddly Posted: Oct.16 at 9:30 am
Why does he keep getting referred to as the “first overall pick”?? I feel like I’m on crazy pills.

  • Z Posted: Oct.16 at 9:34 am
Who’s the 3? I’d say Marion, he doesn’t have much of an handle but it would a crime to keep Beasley out of that block. He’s just so effin crafty down low.
Was that homoerotic?? I’m not sure…

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.16 at 9:35 am
Z, it would be Marion. They’ll be undersized, but that’s where their atlent lies on the roster so these dudes need to play a TON of minutes.

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.16 at 9:36 am
    *talent

  • Marcel Mutoni Posted: Oct.16 at 9:37 am
    whoops, fixed. need coffee.

  • justin Posted: Oct.16 at 9:41 am
Of course they did a little “dirty” work, hell Baylor (of all places) is trying to do the same thing with John Wall. Not sure if Baylor can come up with 400,000 bucks to pay assistant or not though without having Huggybear, but we’ll see.

  • Z Posted: Oct.16 at 9:42 am
More NBA teams should do that… There’s no point on having two 7 footers (ho hum, Memphis) out there if they can’t play. Like there’s no sense in giving a guy like Quinn tons of burn because he is a by-the-book pg. Play your best unit without giving up too much size or speed, period. Jackson understood that when he made Harper the ‘pg’ back in the Chitown days. MJ and Pip were the creators anyways.

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.16 at 9:48 am
He’ll be starting by haltime of game 1.

  • Jukai Posted: Oct.16 at 9:50 am
    Z gets it.

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Oct.16 at 9:52 am
while haslem + beasley + marion looks good superficially, only one of the three can create his own shot consistenly: is that enough? or is the thinking that with wade around there aren’t so many shots left to go around so no problem?

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.16 at 9:54 am
    Exactly, matt.

  • Z Posted: Oct.16 at 9:56 am
matt, that’s exactly why they need to start mark blount or joel anthony aka the creators.

  • jay Posted: Oct.16 at 10:42 am
I’d like to see them start alonzo mourning.

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.16 at 11:28 am
No Top #50 again today? Ryne, what’s up with that, kid?

  • mat smith Posted: Oct.16 at 1:16 pm
Marion does not work so well in a half court game, he and Beasley look lost in the pre-season games, looks like DWade is gonna need a bigger Backpack

  • LA Huey Posted: Oct.16 at 2:25 pm
Anybody know of anything that approaches basketball (in any city) like The Wire focuses on drugs in B-more?

  • Allenp Posted: Oct.16 at 5:04 pm
The headline on this article is curious. It places the blame or guilt on Beasley as opposed to the Kansas State program which could have worked out a deal with Beasley’s coach without the player’s knowledge. In fact, what is the head coach at Kansas State’s name? I didn’t see it mentioned in the blog, curious since he’s the one that highers assistants.
Just a very curious blog post.

  • ace Posted: Oct.16 at 6:43 pm
    highers assistans?
