SLAMonline Top 50: Yao Ming, no. 15

The definitive ranking of the best players in the NBA today…

by Emry DowningHall

Yao Ming is the most important player in the NBA. If you don’t deduct points for China’s population, and overwhelming nationalism, he’s also the most popular. Standing 7-foot-6 inches and hailing from Shanghai, he’s a giant monument to the globalization of the game of basketball.

When measuring the reach of an athlete’s popularity, I’ve found an excellent barometer is to find out whether my mother knows that the person exists. I came to terms with the fact my mother was out of touch with sports when she used to inquire about my own high school practices by asking, “How was rehearsal today, honey?” I’ve never fully recovered.

I thought I would put Yao to the test, and in preparation for this article, I did what a good son should do, and hit her up.

“Mom…do you know who Yao Ming is?” I asked.

“Yao Ming? Yes, he’s a basketball player; in fact, I have his biography around the house somewhere. I picked it up for your father.”

I wasn’t sure which was more impressive – the fact that she knew who he was, or the fact that she actually copped Yao: A Life in Two Worlds. Ric Bucher’s name must have really rang out.

Why is Yao Ming no. 15 on this list?

The Good:

Yao represents everything right about the globalization of basketball. He possesses the star power to put fans in the seats, and has the skills and frame to adapt to the NBA style of play.

His post game is fundamental, and his improvement represents the kind of work ethic everyone can appreciate from a superstar. At times his game may appear predictable but that’s by design.

He’s 7-6, strong enough to hold position in the post, and smart enough to realize keeping the ball high eliminates a defender’s ability to guard him–listen to your coaches youngins’! His ability to make free throws at an extremely high rate also allows him to remain in the game in crunch time.

The Rockets will place Yao in the middle of the court to break a press, and his name is often called to shoot technical foul shots. His ability to find cutters, and see movement develop from the block is something all big men should aspire to, and why the Rockets dump the ball into Yao on nearly every possession.

His athleticism for a man his size is unbelievable. If you get the chance to see the Rockets play live, take it. Yao runs the floor with amazing grace, and although he’s not quick, he covers the court very well. He sets the type of screens that give knockdown shooters wet dreams, and knows how to run the offense through his position.

Beyond basketball, he serves as an ambassador for China. He is responsible for billions (no joke) of NBA fans. He’s also indirectly responsible for one of TNT’s and Charles Barkley’s greatest moments.

The Bad:

For all the positive things you can say about Yao, his inability to remain healthy over the past three seasons is the reason he doesn’t appear higher on this list.

Despite initial skepticism of his ability to stay healthy, Yao brushed his shoulders off and missed only two games in his first three seasons in the NBA. He then missed a total of 86 games the following three seasons.

Although Yao reported to Rockets camp healthy this season, and he did appear fit during the Olympics, I think there are legitimate long-term concerns about his body’s ability to handle the grind of an 82-game NBA season. His stature illustrates, not surprisingly, a catch 22: his size is a clear advantage in matchups, but that same build takes an undeniable toll on his body. And how does he monitor that?

As basketball fans, we should all be rooting for Yao. After he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot this past season, his oft-reserved emotions cascaded into view. He expressed feelings of failure and felt as if he had let his team and his country down. Though listed as China’s wealthiest athlete, Yao wouldn’t be ballin’ for the bucks; even if he were traded to Milwaukee.

With Ron Artest added to the Rockets’ lineup, 2008-09 is the most important year yet for the legacy Yao will leave. If he’s able to remain healthy and get Houston out of the first round of the playoffs for the first time in his career, history will remember Yao fondly.

On the other hand, if he is forced to once again miss significant time due to injury, there will be enough fodder to validate claims that dueling between the NBA and his commitment to Chinese professional basketball has proven too much for the icon.

I’m not asking you to root for the Rockets, but next time you’re raising your glass, why not toast to Yao’s health? David Stern and 1,321,851,888 Chinese basketball fans will thank you for it.

I’m sorry, but Yao Ming at 15? Bull^hit. I like Emry and his writing though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James The Baller

What has he done again? He is better than Shawn “the poster boy” Bradley. Hes average in my books!!! Bigs i would take over him is Duncan, KG, Bynum, Shaq, Amare, Dwight, Oden, maybe one or two more and Eddy Curry, … well maybe not the last one.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James The Baller

I ahve a strong feeling this list actually isnt in order. Im going with its in no paticular order and that nothing really matters until the 1 & 2 spot. Which leaves Kobe and 1 and Bron at 2. if its the other way around … its bullsh1t and SLAM needs to get off Brons jock!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com James The Baller

This list is killin me … what do you think jukai?

  • Michael

husrty bullsh1t too high or too low?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    He kissed his @ss!

  • Benoit Benjamin

Yao is the best big man in the league right now. I like the ranking.

  • Benoit Benjamin

My bad, best center, not big man.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James The Baller

Yeah he is the biggest thats for sure!! best … nope!

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Good write up Emry. Still no mention of Manu. Hmmmmm……

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Should be a lower number Michael. But, if you have read the last 3 days worth of articles, I wont be railing on either side. Im just going to suck it up and deal with it. Smile and move on, and hope that people can provide intelligent insight and thoughtful comments relating to the topic.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Amare has come up right? I cant remember him is all….

  • http://www.slamonline.com James The Baller

Does Emry do alot of writing for SLAM? Its a good article.

  • Terrell

I believe if Yao is 15th then Tmac should be 16th or 14th…same as Ai and Melo…..they are to intertwined to really seperate…

  • http://slamonline.com My opinion matters

Best center in the league…hands down…good ranking…if he could stay healthy he would be higher…i don’t know about the athleticism though…especially the way Marbury dropped him…the guy is very stiff…great post moves…good jumper..but moves like a robot

  • http://another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

Emry, I liked the article. I think the most important thing for Adelman is to really monitor Yao’s minutes. Only then he can stay healthy with a body like that.

The something else: Emry, when will you return to the status of “Mr. Fantasy”? And what do you tell women when they ask what kind of stuff you do? “Yeah, I’m Mr. Fantasy on some website” – could give some wrong impressions…..

  • Michael

hursty, agree, he is top ten in my book, but yeah i have gone beyond getting annoyed with anything. i think the kobe/lebron choice will give us a 1000 comments

  • Staff

Yao is a strange one, so much potential but it never delvers at the crunch, plus his stock sunk big time when he got blocked by nate

  • Froggiestyle

Given the picture, even Yao thinks his ranking and performance both stink like some week-old durian. PU

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I don’t care, where the f*ck is Dirk ranked? I like this list but where dirk is located buggs the horse sh*t out of me.

  • Froggiestyle

DP – Dirk when he was good, or Dirk when he chokes?

  • Michael

    ok remaining 14 in order:
    14. melo
    13. manu
    12. pierce
    11. dirk
    10. nash
    9. dwight
    8. deron
    7. kg
    6. duncan
    5. amare
    4. wade
    3. paul
    2. lebron
    1. kobe

  • Froggiestyle

amare at 5? surely you jest

  • Bruno

i have him at #15 too, but SURELY NOT AHEAD OF AI AND TMAC

  • Michael

kg/amare/garnett are fairly interchangeable but give his age he edges ahead, though i am not sure what the criteria is anymore so this could be flawed thinking

  • Michael

    *kg/amare/duncan

  • Bruno

    oh yeah… almost forgot…
MELO IS NOT A TOP 15!! not even in his mom list!

  • Froggiestyle

M – you really think you swap Amare for KG in the celts and they still win? Not me.

  • Ken

Well-written Emry. I actually don’t have too much of a problem with Yao at 15. I think my biggest issue is with Melo and Manu being where they are, compared to guys like Caron, Baron, and AI.

  • Michael

froggie, no probably not, given kg was the driving force behind their amazing defensive turnaround but my list is more of a prediction of what slam will come up with rather than who is the actual best player at this point in time.

  • KA

great pic choice. actually makes Yao look hard.

  • Froggiestyle

?? really M? that’s not even your list, but a prediction of a slam list that’s already been slighted by everyone including slam folks themselves? Hm. ok. That said I think Yao is great for the NBA, just maybe kind of a bust for houston. Heng Hao!

  • Ecmelo

    hahahah….YAO on 15:D:D
    thats funny !!!!
    Here are the other 14:
    14. Dirk Nowitzki
    13. Deron Williams
    12. Manu Ginobili
    11. Steve Nash
    10. Amare Stoudemire
    9. Carmelo Anthony
    8. Paul Pierce
    7. Tim Duncan
    6. Dwayne Wade
    5. Kevin Garnett
    4. Chris Paul
    3. Dwight Howard
    2. LeBron James
    1. Kobe Bryant

  • Michael

well froggie if i was doing a list manu and melo wouldnt even be in the top 15

  • Froggiestyle

    E – Howard at 3?!? really? wow.

  • http://ngunioamosotho.com Nguni

like the ranking. he is the best center in the NBA.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

When (or if) Amare starts to play defense maybe he could be ranked over Duncan and KG. Maybe. Those two are franchise cornerstones and proven winners, Amare right now is a offensive beast and not much more. Think Yao should be ranked above Melo and on par with Dwight, but other than that 15 seems about right. I like that Manu is still left on the board, although I’ll laugh my ass off if he’s ranked before Melo. Imo Manu took the crown of best “non-US player” from Dirk last season.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Yao, if he is truly the best center in the NBA, should be on the fringe of the top 10, 11 or 12, not quite this low. Good work, Emry.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

    * to clarify above post. If Melo is higher on the list then I’ll laugh. As he shouldn’t be.

  • Young C

More like 1.Lebron 2.Chris Paul 3. Kobe. Just wait.

  • Nadia Comaneci

His presense one of the best things to happen in the game of bball the last 10 years.Best center in the world (maybe not in the NBA though), great character, ambassador of the game, nice place for him on the list.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Young C: No effin way. If in fact there is a one on 1,234,865,987,098 chance that KB is ranked 3rd, they may as well shut down all comments until the 28th.

  • http://www.myspace.com/2536545 Bryan

Yao is very skilled but I think Tmac and Ron are both better.

  • Young C

I just think(or hope) that Slam wouldnt go through all of this again without some kind of surprise. And I think most people thought that Chris should have won the MVP last year and most think that Lebron will win this year, so…1 and 2

  • folodadon17

yao ming numba 15 thats BS
    c’mon slam wake up

  • http://slamonline.com My opinion matters

@froggiesytle…definitely right about your comment…no way celts with with amare instead of kg…one word..DEFENSE!!!

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

    Top 10

  • Nadia Comaneci

If these are the days that signal the departure of Elgin Baylor of the NBA then this is a sad time for this league in particular and the game of bball in general…to all my dunk-happy friends: he is the one that “took a horizontal game and made it vertical” so RESPECT…

  • Nadia Comaneci

    @overtime….:worldwide easily…

  • k.o.

how many of the top 25 are going to have asterisks next to their name??? a well written piece nonetheless.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

This list sucks…… just thought I’d say it since everyone else is afraid to now. :) Not the writers or the write-ups, just the list. :)
Have a great day guys! :P

    Co-sign Nadia.
And Co Co, you can’t come to the party late after the fire has died down with gasoline.

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

He doesn’t play much last season, how the hell is he #15? At best he is probably 26ish

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ B. Long

@Young C: Yeah your right, and most people who are honest with themselves know that Kobe should already have had at least 2 MVP trophies before last season. CP3 is great but I’d honestly take Deron over him right now. There really isn’t anything that Chris(besides being quicker) can do that Deron can’t and he has the size to get physical with smaller guards. Anyways back to the story. Good spot for Yao, same story, different season for him and TMac again. If they stay healthy look out. But they won’t so never mind.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Oh boy. I’m not going to get into another CP3/Deron debate until their place comes up on the list.

  • jdn41

Emry can write a sick article

  • Young C

I agree Deron probably will be just as good or even better when its all said and done. But Im just talking about this list and who’s better right now. And right now CP3 was almost MVP while Deron hasnt made the all-star team yet. but like TAD said, we can continue this when they come up…

  • KobeStopper

    Froggiestyle:

Between your vast knowledge of french cheese displayed in the Magloire post, and your mention of the word durian here, it seems like you’re either very well traveled, or just know a lot about food

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ B. Long

OH MY JESUS! This guy just tried to base his ranking of a player on one allstar selection and an award that he didn’t win. Anyways I’ll chill with the Deron/CP3 ish till they come up too but just so everyone knows CP3 is probably one of my favorite players in the L so this isn’t hate its just me being real. Oh yeah, anybody interested in reading a good preview on OKC click my name.

  • Young C

He was also first team all-NBA for what its worth.

    figures….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Emry DowningHall

Hey guys, just reading through these comments, thanks for the love, I truly appreciate it. I chose to write about Yao because I truly believe he’s good for the game that I love, as well as the NBA, and I think the man can flat out hoop on top of all that character stuff. It’s also challenging writing these for you guys because we all realize you’re diehard fans, so putting down the stats wont tell the story…. @Gerard I got wifey @ home so she already knows what it is with the Mr. Fantasy stuff, lol. I actually take a lot of heat from that by my boys because the logo is the Nuggets colors and I’m a diehard Knicks fan. Fantasy is coming real soon though, I can’t wait to get back at it! Let me say one thing though, I think Yao is the best center in the league when healthy… he doesn’t need to dominate the rock, and let’s the other four players do them.

  • Young C

    …and rookie of the year.

  • http://moneybills2cents.blogspot.com/ Money Bill Williams

great article Emry, ranking not so much

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

On a complete side note: I seem to remember Lang setting up a fantasy league for Slamonline regulars to join in. Is there a chance someone sets one up again? Is anyone doing one of their own? Is anyone down to do one?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

If anyone read the Baron Davis post then you know who i feel….i’m trying not to bash the list or the people who were involved, but its get harder not to. I don’t understand why injuries bump ANYONE down, especially when they’re not injured right now. I would understand Manu being bumped down for being innjured now, but not if they’re healthy. Amare better be next since he’s in his 6 yrs he’s aversgeg 63 games a season, Yao has averaged 67. Injuries are injuries, right?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

TAD: i had just mentioned a fantasy league to hursty last night, i’d definitely be interested…i was in Tarzan’s SLAM league last year..

  • http://yaomania.com Wendy

No one, again, NO ONE, can guard Yao one-on-one.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

RV: I would rather not know who you feel, if it’s all the same. Thanks.
As for fantasy: Clearly, I wouldn’t do a Tarzan ran league, but if anyone wants to set it up, i’m down.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

lol, how i feel , not who…I pretty much had no choice since i really wanted to play and its was the only one going at the time..

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

    TAD; I’m up for fantasy.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Me too LZ. But do you want to play in the league?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Ha, Tad is 2 for 2.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Is everyone down to do it on yahoo?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I’ve never played a fantasy sport in my life. But if Tad does it then it must be cool! I’m down. How do we do this thang? P.S. Sorry bout the site change, Taddy. Hope you’ll read my work on 2.0.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

first we have to make sure everyone who joins will actually keep up with their team

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m not cool. Sorry. But i’ve only done one other fantasy basketball league but I didn’t set it up. But as long as you have a Yahoo account, we can set it up. It is fairly simple and it just requires that you are there for the draft and set your roster every night.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Oh, and Emry: sorry I hijacked your thread my man. But since you are “Mr. Fantasy”, I hope you won’t be too upset.

  • http://www.obviated.blogspot.com nick

Adleman and yao actually have a plan to preserve the big’un. He’s got an insane work ethic, which the staff is forcing him to hold down. He’s swimming more instead of running, hitting the eliptical instead of the track, and taking days off practice when his muscles are sore (he already took one…when muscles are sore, they don’t absorb the pounding, that means means the pounding goes to the bones, and that means more stress injuries) I think Yao realizes that playing through soreness in an unimportant preseason practice just isn’t worth it. He said “i have to learn from the past 3 years…”

  • http://slamonline.com Simone S.Y Lawy

yao sucks…, i’m sorry for those chinese and rocket fans, but he’s don’t deserve here…he’s below 15.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i’m guessing Simone isn’t a rockets fan or chinese. Otherwise he’d definitely be a Yao fan. Its a good thing i’m a rockets’ fan since I’m not chinese, huh?

  • Kenny Anderson’s Auditor

I’m going to say something. For some reason, the Pierce ranking, when it comes, suddenly becomes the most important moment in the history of Slam Magazine. It will be a defining moment: we’ll see if Slam finally “gets it” and changes their tune. If they get it right, it will erase years of embarassing blunders, the coddling to the “flash” and hype, the selection of style over substance that has made the magazine what it is after so many years — I call it “The Telfair FCT” — but they have a chance. Let me just say that anyone who doesn’t think Paul Pierce is one of the 10 best, most complete players in the league deserves electric shock therapy ASAP.

  • luvshaq

Yao is a solid pick right around here.. I didn’t have any faith in him when he was drafted, but he proved me wrong. I wouldn’t take Melo over him

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Sounds good TAD, I’ve never played a fantasy league either. But I do indeed have an Yahoo account, so that’s perfect. One have to set the rooster every night? Is it a problem if one miss a night some times?

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

KAA is on to something, same goes for Manu.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

You can actually set your roster up to a week ahead.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

*KAA is on to something concerning Peirce…

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

    *Pierce

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Cool TAD, that’s more compatible with my schedule. What do We do from here? How many entrants do we need? (sorry all the Q’s but I’m a rookie in this field)

  • jinctura

    yao is good ,but 15?
    at 25-30 i think

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m looking into it now. You can basically name the amount of teams you want to have and setup your own scoring system and rules. The ideal amount of teams would be anywhere from 10-14 or so?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Tad, I am in, Hursty told me he’d do it also

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Sounds about right, have to be at least 6+ for it to be interesting I would think. 10-14 (maybe 16) sounds perfect.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

I gotta go guys, we’ll catch up on this one of coming days. Enjoy your evening.

  • Jose

So lets see who’s yet to be listed…

    CARMELO ANTHONY

    DWIGHT HOWARD
    LEBRON JAMES

thats 15 people already. someone aint gon be on this list out of theses guys (only guy i would think was rashard but who knows)

  • Jose

Kirleinko and hinrich are possibilities but not likely in my mind

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Pssst….it’s Rashard…..

  • bullish

this is the worst list ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kenny Anderson’s Auditor

Can you imagine? That’ll convince me that Shard is personally financing Slam with that 115 million contract — that’s what it costs to go 4 for 13 with 6 turnovers and get knocked out v Detroit in game 5 …

Anyway, Yao is nowhere near the 15th best player in the league. Rich man’s Jack Sikma, don’t even try to BS a brotha. His terrible defense and inability to protect the rim cost them the Jazz series 2 years ago. As bad a weakside, rotating team defender as Ive seen in the league. Makes Pau Gasol look like Bill Russell in terms of helping and rotating and guarding the tin.

  • tike

OK this ones fair…i was expected atleast 13 but 15 wont hurt em…haha get it hurt em…i quit….STAT’S next

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Rashard Lewis should be on this list…really?

  • Michael

yeah jose it might be rashard

  • Bo Diddly

My top 14 (for what its worth…1 MILLION DOLLARS!!)
    14. T-Mac
    13. B Diddy
    12. Manu
    11. Deron Williams
    10. Dirk a Dirk a
    9. Amare
    8. Nash
    7. KG
    6. Pierce – Was clearly Celtics bsest player in playoffs.
    5. Duncan
    4. Wade
    3. Chris Paul
    2. Bron
    1. Kwarme Brown – I mean KOBE

  • Tonnaay

Wouldnt have him ahead of Iverson But Slam messed up again Yao should be top 10 and Melo should too. But its getting really disgusting now Ginobli and Nash are gonna be in the top 14 both of them are overrated especially nash

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Save me a spot on that league, TAD. Gotta go spend time with the Fam now. Duces

  • http://nba.com/celtics/ Moose

TADOne: I’d love to be in the league, too, if I can do it.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

@TAD, if I’m not in, that sh*t’s being overrun, son.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Nothing was setup yet fellas. I just asked the question and sort of got stuck with the “Commish” tag. It’s cool, I don’t mind doing it.

  • http://nba.com/celtics/ Moose

But we’re just saying that if it happens, we want in.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I got that Mooselodge. Duly noted.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Commisioner Tim. I like that sh*t.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Emry DowningHall

I think we should all collectively realize that opinions are always going to differ on a list … a lot of things factor in to something like this … No doubt Yao is top 10 if healthy, but peep the games he missed over the last 3. Either way, the discussion is half the fun right? I know when I put something down for Slam I’m writing for the most knowledgeable fans of the game … so if we as Slam staffers will give you all that much, I don’t think it’s too much to ask to let things ride out and see how they fall.

  • http://nba.com/celtics/ Moose

    Thanks, TAD. Mooselodge?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Wow, Emry with the real talk. Thank’s for the compliment to all of us.

  • http://nba.com/celtics/ Moose

Oh, and TAD-is it an automatic draft or we pick? That might be tough, because if there are that many people, then it would be hard to find a time.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

My money’s on Manu for #14.

Lunch is over, so I’m out . . . TAD, remember to include me in the fantasy talks.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

True story, in Tarzan’s league last year, I was autodrafted Kobe Bean Bryant. I subsequently traded him for my hometown hero, D-Wade, who went on to his worst season ever. Fantastic!!!!

  • tike

Nash will be in the top 11-12 and rightfully so hes not overrated at all

  • NBK

If being injured hurts your spot on this list then that furthers my point that baron davis should not have been ahead of AI.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

auto draft sucks, live draft is best because you can make real time decisions, there wont be any excuses since you picked the guys yourself. Usually a sunday night draft works for most, or a monday night.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

0 Bobcats on this list. But its all good. SLAM>Any other B-Ball mag ever

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well, I know from doing a number of yahoo football drafts that you can pre-set your rankings on your picks if you are unable to be there live. But yes, live is always the best. The issue we have is the time-zone difference. Again, it’s not even setup, but i’ll probably have at it this weekend sometime.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

But if Howard isnt 14, this list is slightly flawed. Howard and Yao are both EQUALIY good, both of them have things that their ‘fans’ call an edge in this competition. But, i will let the paid writers make this decsision, not me.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Fu(k fantasy (no offensie to Emry). Online NBA Live/ 2k9 Tournements/ Actual Basketball are all better in my opionon (which should not affect yours)

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

BET: Actual basketball all day long, of course. It’s all in fun anyway. For the record, I would rather snow sled with no pants on then play in an online video game tournament. But that is just me.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

    Slightly flawed is an understatement.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Im not a gamer either, but for entertainment purposes video games are better. However, for fantasy basketball you gotta know your basketball to do well.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

TAD just revealed something critical to all American’s futures!!!!!!!! HE might BE Sarah Palin’s husband!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

it just doesnt appeal to me, this fantasy basketball. It is all on paper. Its like writting dirty notes with a girl in class, you can say all the er0tic sh!t you want, but it is not actual sexxx. Online tournements you can choose your team, if you want your squad to be Shaq, KG, Lebron, Kobe, and CP3 or Jerome James, Sean May, Tim Thomas, Devan George, and Like Ridnour you can have it, so it is 1 step up from fantasy basketball, but this is just my opionon

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

I guess with my (sick) anology, Online Tournments are internet p0rn. Sick and addictive but better than anything that is just words

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Good analogy. I just can’t sit for hours and look at 4 walls and a screen while pressing buttons unless i’m getting paid for it. Fantasy leagues, once the draft is done, take only minutes to set rosters.
Eboy: I’m not even sure what a separtist is. So no, not me.

  • tealish

Nice article but Carmelo needs up to come up fast.

  • RV

i hate wordpress..anyone figure out why it won’t let you post sometimes?

  • RV

BEt, i’d rather write notes, at least the girl would be real

  • 12345

if yao is not as high as dwight howard because of his health history…. then baron davis and gilbert arenas sure as hell shouldnt be above AI for there health histories.. slam is hating on yao.. he is clearly better than dwight atleast at this point in there careers just like AI is better than arenas and davis..

  • niQ

    LOL how was rehearsal.hhahahahaa

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

If he could play 82 games in a season he would deserve this ranking. I don’t hate on his game, but with an injury history like his there are more than 14 NBA players I’d rather have than him on my team.

  • Big Sia

    UNDERRATED

  • Bear

Yao ming should not be ahead of A.I.

  • jrp14

Is there any possible chance lebron is #1??

  • scott

Fantasy basketball is fun. By the way RV would you pick Howard or Yao in fantasy? I think Howard is the obvious choice again.

  • RV

Scott: its not that obvious , it all depends on who you’ve gotten already. I’ve actually made it a habit of getting Howard the past two years on my team because he goes lower than he should. However, I make sure to cancel out his horrible FT shooting and turnovers by also getting great FT shooters and low turnover guys. If I had to choose between them two only, i’d go with Yao though. The reason is he doesn’t do anythung bad enough to hurt your stats. Of course he could always get hurt, but you can always then drop him. Howard may give me rebounds and blocks, but his FT% alone can cost you a victory, especially if he has a bad week and its lower than 50%.

  • RV

As for this list, its just gets more confusing as it goes along. Although my opinion is Yao is better than Howard, i don’t think he’s WAY better, so i wouldn’t put them more than 3-4 spots apart, regardless of who’s before the other. Most probably will agree at least with this. So then you’d expect howard to come up within the next few spots. However, if you’re talking about the best guy to start a team with or build around, Howard would be top 5. So he could be 14 or 4 on this list. That’s a wide gap and thats what happens when you don’t agree on which point of view to rank these guys from…

  • scott

@RV…I’m gonna assume this list is about the best guy to start a team with to build around but if that is the case then this list needs to be changed around in my humble opinion. Iverson wouldn’t be in the top 30.

  • RV

Scott: that’s the problem, some voted for the best guy to build a team around, other for the best individual talent right now, others for whos the MVP, etc. Its like 3 different lists mixed into one.

  • scott

Yeah but the list gets people talking for the start of the season that is just around the corner. In all seriousness how did Danny Granger not make the top 50. I believe that was the biggest mistake. Granger averaged like 25 a game after the break last year.

  • http://nba.com/celtics Moose

Hey, TADOne, what’s your email address? So I can send one to you for the fantasy, i don’t want to post my address here.

  • Caleb

“More like 1.Lebron 2.Chris Paul 3. Kobe. Just wait.”

If only… that would be closer to the correct ranking, but it won’t happen.

  • RV

Scott: because they take into account past years, half a season of 25 ppg isn’t gonna cut it. Mike James did it for almost a whole season and then he fell off again.

  • E’s Mama

What can I say? Being a star of the stage and screen… life is one big rehearsal to me. Nice to be remembered by my boy. Love you, E!

  • E’s Sis

Yao who! Go bro! Nice to see your writing….keep up the good work! I do remember the rehearsal comments and I must say that I smiled when reading this. Remember how mom didn’t want me to play rugby? When I finally scored a try she called it a “put”.Gotta love her!

  • http://nba.com/celtics Moose

Caleb, right now Kobe IS better than CP3. And I’m not a fan of Kobe, lemme tell ya.

  • tealish

Kobe’s still top dog. He wasn’t the MVP last year, but he was definitely still the best player. The 2nd and 3rd spot can be Paul/Bron or Bron/Paul — either way is fine imo.

  • http://www.jeffdaycartoons.com gwillicker

    where’s “the ugly”?

  • tealish

At the same time, I can guarantee that LeBron will place no lower than second. That is certain.

  • http://www.jeffdaycartoons.com gwillicker

Yao will be durable in a couple of years after his legs are completely bionic. Kind of like how Z became an all-star for the Cavs after several years of having both feet completely replaced. Big guys.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    best picture of yao ever.
TAD if you are reading this, i’m interested in the league too.

  • http://moneybills2cents.blogspot.com/ Money Bill Williams

    im interested in league also

  • Caleb

Moose – I disagree. I think Paul is a more productive player. As is Lebron. And when I think about “best” and “better” I think about productivity and efficiency – Paul and Lebron trump Kobe in those regards.

  • Kenny Anderson’s Auditor

for all the chit chat, this list rendered itself wildly insignificant once Gilbert “I am the salmon king!” Arenas placed ahead of a decorated Point GOD like Tony Parker. Arenas would struggle to even make the Spurs roster, don’t worry about starting for them. You think Gil’s better than Jaque Vaughn? Me neither.

  • RV

SLAM, could we get a separate page for the fantasy teams? I have a feeling there’s gonna be a lot more people wanting to join and we might end up with more than one league…it would be easier to organize that way

  • kevindfromchina

yao ming becomes a phenomenon. he is bound to be the icon of basketball, measurement of professionalism and spokesman of responsibility for whatever he has achieved and showed. Just love and admire him for eeeeeeeever!!!!!!!

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

YAO, 15th best, in todays NBA. ARRRRGHHH!

  • Stewie Griffin

What drives me mad in this list is that Ginobili will be higher than guys like A.I., Baron, T-Mac,…most of all after his 12.6 points average in the Conference finals last season. He’s so overrated.

  • haha

i will like his list if me is there

  • MeloMan13

    Melo is def top ten

  • Emphasis

Yao is one of the best centers of all time. When he’s healthy, there is not another center in the NBA who is as good as him. And nobody please mention Dwight Howard; he won’t be anywhere close to Yao until he learns how to make free throws (or any shot that’s not a dunk).
