The Nets Have a Discouraging, Truthful Message for Their Fans

by Marcel Mutoni

It’s not often that a pro franchise’s front office is brutally honest with its customers. After all, they have tickets and merchandise to sell, and the surest way to do that is to convince these folks that you’re going to the postseason. Living in these economic times, this message of hope is especially critical.

Don’t tell any of this to the New Jersey Nets, however, because for them, honesty is apparently the best policy. When asked what to expect of his squad this season, team president Rod Thorn had a sobering message for the fans.

From the Star-Ledger:

“I think you’re going to have to win almost half your games probably to make the playoffs in the East this year,” Rod Thorn said this morning.

And your team can do that? “On paper, probably not. But our goal is to improve as we go along and get better, and I think we will do that.”

New Jersey Nets Basketball: So exciting, it hurts!

In other Nets news: Looks like team owner Bruce Ratner is tired of losing money, but is having a tough time finding a buyer.

The truth will set your fans free… from attending your games.

I always preferred honesty to bullshit. The NJN fan must be defined by the following: “I’m not depressed…Just paralyzed by hope”

I’m a Nets fan, but this is no surprise, is it? The fans aren’t going to the games anyway, no matter what Thorn says. It’s a rebuilding situation, with young players who need minutes to get better, which means that they will makes mistakes especially defensively. The funny thing is: if Thorn would’ve said: we’re in the playoffs come April, it would be posted here too. Man, I appreciate Thorn for being honest, I like the young players we have, and let’s go from there.

  • Nguni Posted: Oct.28 at 9:10 am
i don’t think anybody was thinking the Nets are making the playoffs this year, well, except for VC.

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.28 at 9:14 am
    Rod Thorn failed marketing 101.

  • jaywhy Posted: Oct.28 at 9:22 am

  • Gumdrop Posted: Oct.28 at 10:16 am
Nobody went to their games at the best of times.

    Hello Brooklyn!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Froggiestyle Posted: Oct.28 at 11:08 am
Get ready to rumble in Brooklyn (and not go to the playoffs)

  • Sesa Posted: Oct.28 at 11:26 am
Operation LeBronze is in full effect

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Oct.28 at 11:40 am
I’m wondering why people still call Lebron “Lebronze”.

  • Z Posted: Oct.28 at 11:47 am
People weren’t even going to the swamp like that when they were going to the Finals… Just move the damn team to Newark and call it a day.

  • riggs Posted: Oct.28 at 11:52 am
    but newark sucks

  • B. Long Posted: Oct.28 at 11:59 am
This is called not setting the bar too high. They’ll make the playoffs. You heard it hear first.

  • boomdizzle Posted: Oct.28 at 12:29 pm
Dr J is rollin in his grave… more like drowning in a cold diet dr pepper

  • Joel O's Posted: Oct.28 at 12:59 pm
Well honesty beats… the lying-through-their-teeth snakes who stole the Sonics any day.

  • Nathalie Posted: Oct.28 at 1:15 pm
best answer he could have possibly gave…

  • Yknot Posted: Oct.28 at 1:49 pm
We should call him Legold instead of Lebronze. They’ll make the playoffs, and Yi will average 28ppg. Hahahahaha

  • Knucklehead Posted: Oct.28 at 2:34 pm
brutal honesty but i’ll still b in tha house a couple times this year

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Oct.28 at 2:34 pm
Rod Thorn is the real deal.

  • the baconator Posted: Oct.28 at 2:55 pm
Haha, at least they’re honest. After trading RJ, their hopes of making the playoffs this year rest on the beaten up, unmotivated shoulders of Vinsanity, who I give til January before he gets injured again. My advice? Run as many promotions as possible to get fans and focus on building team chemistry for next year

  • AB_40 Posted: Oct.28 at 3:11 pm
because you suck, we suck that’s the slogan new jersey has for their fans

  • LA Huey Posted: Oct.28 at 4:19 pm
Glad Thorn is honest but I hope the Hoops Gods don’t reward them with the top pick in ‘09.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.28 at 5:22 pm
Devin Harris will be good this year; but the rest of their team isn’t very good.

  • sublicon Posted: Oct.28 at 6:16 pm
Brook Lopez is gonna be good this year…Yi should be good. I hope Carter shows up. We’ll see what happens.

  • GGG Posted: Oct.28 at 8:16 pm
Its tough being a Nets fan…but hey, its probably even harder being a Knicks fan.

  • David Posted: Oct.28 at 9:01 pm
Wouldn’t it have been more annoying if he said that they were aiming for the chip? I’m not that mad at Thorn for saying this.

  • NBA-JERSEY-KING Posted: Oct.28 at 11:36 pm
will carter get traded? and where?

  • Nashty Posted: Oct.29 at 12:20 am
Just let Yi play 35 minutes a night, there are gonna be about 40 million chinese people tune in for each game.

  • ktokyo Posted: Oct.29 at 4:46 am
this will continue until VC is gone, so pack a lunch Nets fans - again.

  • Makin Posted: Oct.29 at 10:16 am
I bet if the nets gave oyt free tickets peolple would still not attend thie games.

  • Diggy Posted: Oct.29 at 1:08 pm
    Who cares? Its the nets

  • Jason Castro Posted: Oct.29 at 2:58 pm
Hilarious! Whenever someone is brutally honest it is very entertaining….but I’m sure its not entertaining for the Jersey fans…plus did Rod Thorn really had to say that for anyone to know that Jersey sucks? Think about it…the team is going to be led by Vince Carter….must we say more?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.29 at 8:53 pm
Ship them mofos out to Brooklyn already son!
