Vinny Del Negro’s Insanely Long Practice

by Marcel Mutoni

Chicago Bulls players thought they had finally got rid of relentless, taskmaster-like coaches when Scott Skiles was dismissed. Those guys probably figured rookie bench boss Vinny Del Negro would take it easy on them as he tried to learn the coaching ropes in the League. Boy, were they wrong.

Unhappy with the team’s performance against Minny on Tuesday night, Del Negro made his squad pay for their listless performance by having them spend much of the following day on the practice floor.

From the Sun-Times:

After about an hour in the film room watching video of Tuesday’s game, the Bulls were on the court for an additional three hours Wednesday, pushing the official practice session over the four-hour mark.

That’s a mighty long time to be going through basketball drills; even Pat Riley thinks it’s a tad much.

One person who wasn’t around for the grueling session is Ben Gordon, who’s nursing an injured big toe … or possibly staging some kind of protest for not getting that long-term deal he so desperately wants: “People are going to read into what they think, but no one really knows the truth other than Ben and us,” Del Negro said.

on the flipside - they went on a practice vacation in MN for having won 1 preseason game. McHale you’re a genius

  • slamfan4life Posted: Oct.16 at 11:58 am
how else will they get better? Rose obviously was the best player their last game, and he only took charge 3min left in the game

  • Darksaber Posted: Oct.16 at 12:32 pm
Yeah, that’s wassup. My us coaches used to run us to the ground in 3+ hour trainings when we lost badly. Those 300 lanky Forwards and Guards that make up the bulls can handle it….

  • JackBrown Posted: Oct.16 at 12:32 pm
    This will end well.

  • Holy Baller Posted: Oct.16 at 12:56 pm
My coach was known for four to five hour long practices, with about half of it being straight up running

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Oct.16 at 12:57 pm
Oh no, they had to practice for half a workday! I hope someone calls Amnesty International.

  • kobeORlebronUchoose Posted: Oct.16 at 1:12 pm
That seems too short for men making millions

  • RedRum Posted: Oct.16 at 1:22 pm
erm… in europe they have two 2.5 hour sessions per day…

Allen Iverson does not want to be a Bull right now.

    To slamfan4life:
No doubt derrick rose is the best player on the team but gooden was without a doubt the best player that day. He tallied up for a 20 and 8. Captain Kirk has officially been booted, and now rose will lead the team. It pisses me off when he turns the ball over because more than half off his turnovers are his teammates faults: their either not paying attention or are not used to having the ball thrown to them (something Hugues and Gordon have to work on. The second thing that pisses me off is the wide open shots the bulls miss when rose splits the defense. The only person that I’ve seen make consistent open shot are gooden and nocioni. Thomas has to start making some shots, Noah has to gain some muscle, gray has to stop fouling every two minutes, deng has to start playing what he’s getting paid, gordon has to start playing, and paxson has to make a deal for kirk/gordon/hugues to leave the team for an actual all star.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Oct.16 at 1:51 pm
they’re still going to miss the playoffs

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Oct.16 at 1:52 pm
Also, this isn’t “Insanely” long. They don’t do two-a-days in training camp? Team USA practiced WAY longer on a daily basis. This just sounds like a normal practice, to me.

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Oct.16 at 1:55 pm
Bulls need to make a trade soon.

  • Diesel Posted: Oct.16 at 2:00 pm
The only way they’re going to cut down on their 46 turnovers a game is to play more together and learn the plays. Come Jnauary first we need to trade gordon for odom, matrix, lee, frye, any big body that is willing to come here.

  • nic Posted: Oct.16 at 3:45 pm
i wonder how long ben gordon’s toe is going to hurt. or rather, i wonder how long vinny’s going to play along.

  • riggs Posted: Oct.16 at 4:02 pm
how did vinnys hair hold up? did he have to use a gallon of gel?

  • slamfan4life Posted: Oct.16 at 4:03 pm
    yep i agree with u 100% Alfonso

  • the baconator Posted: Oct.16 at 4:15 pm
Ya know, the Bulls had such high expectations last season and completely failed at meeting them. They need these ridiculously long practices, especially if they were playing listless against frickin Minnesota. I understand they’re paid workers, but at the same time they’re playing a sport based on performance. Any coach understands that you need to go to extremes sometimes to improve performance

  • CP34MVP Posted: Oct.16 at 4:38 pm
oMg… did Del NEgro forget that they’re the bulls.. Even Phil Jackson didnt do that when the lost to an sub .500 team

  • Patrick Posted: Oct.16 at 5:03 pm
at least now Tyrus Thomas will get his fat a** back in shape

  • Coop Posted: Oct.16 at 5:54 pm
My team sometimes trains for 6 hours and we an under 18s team in england, why is 4 hours such a big deal in the NBA

  • Luke Posted: Oct.16 at 6:21 pm
Poor guys. Being paid millions of dollars and occasioanly having to work at what you love doing for a whole 4 hours a day. Its in these uncertain economic times that you really feel for the players in the nba.

  • michael Posted: Oct.16 at 6:27 pm
I think its good, in order to have a young team discipline and focus you have to punish them for bad games. Hey that’s how my AAU coach does the team, overtime practice.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.16 at 6:59 pm
    Jeez.

  • Krishan Posted: Oct.17 at 12:21 am
    Holy sh!t it’s Luke Wilson

  • Mat Posted: Oct.17 at 3:02 am
wow 3 hours .. i love to ball for over 5 hours and they get millions to do it when i have to work 8 hour days to make my living
oh they have it real tough being in the league ..

  • KA Posted: Oct.17 at 3:47 am
what id give to spend most of my day playing ball.

  • maio Posted: Oct.17 at 7:25 am
Practice? You’re talking about practice, man.
    OK, too obvious.

  • Quail Posted: Oct.17 at 1:12 pm
    quit whinin. i had a 3 and a half hour practice today at 7 a.m. =P

  • mckensm0 Posted: Oct.17 at 1:31 pm
Vinny can run his team for hours on end and it won’t matter. The team stinks and there is no chemistry.

  • slamfan4life Posted: Oct.17 at 5:13 pm
if this is a rebuilding year, fine let it be. I just hope Rose has a good year.
