Worthy of Your Attention

by Marcel Mutoni

Last night was, largely, for hype. Sure, basketball was played, but the evening was more about re-introducing the League’s biggest stars to the mass market, and wetting our appetites for the seven month-long marathon. Save for Blazers supporters, the night was a rousing success.

Tonight, though, the NBA season really jumps off, with 12 games on tap. Let’s take a quick look at the matchups you should keep an eye on…

Toronto @ Philly
: Elton Brand makes his home debut. Philly sports fans, though, might have to be excused for having other things on their nervous minds.

New Orleans @ Golden State: The sure-to-be disastrous Warriors season kicks off. And as Al Harrington and Don Nelson sumo wrestle at mid-court, no one will bat an eyelash.

Miami @ New York: The new-look Heat invade The Garden, facing off against the same-look Knicks. Hope you like hearing boos, Mike D’Antoni.

Milwaukee @ OKC: This will be weird, and sparsely watched.

Memphis @ Houston
: Arguably the game of the night, as the freakishly athletic Grizzlies take on Ron-Ron and the Rockets. The evil genius who created League Pass did so with games like this in mind.

Do we HAVE to call the Warriors disastrous? Plus, CP and SJax tonight?! I love this game.

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Oct.29 at 12:40 pm
Idk Holly, it may be too early to say, but I might go as far as to say there is potential for disaster.

  • Michael Posted: Oct.29 at 12:40 pm
memphis/houston game of the night? of the 4 u listed, i guess so

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Oct.29 at 12:40 pm
    i begin to love NYK…

  • Aristotle Posted: Oct.29 at 12:40 pm
Toronto – New Orleans – Miami – Milwaukee – Houston

  • riggs Posted: Oct.29 at 12:48 pm
holly is in a basketball love triangle!, also im glad league pass is giving the free preview (since im not sure if i want to get it again after last year)

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.29 at 12:53 pm
Detroit/Indiana. I know me and Larry Bird are the only people who care.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Oct.29 at 12:56 pm
I’m so happy its NBA season again. This site doesn’t suck anymore (sorry, I really just hated the whole rankings fiasco plus there wsn’t really much news)

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.29 at 12:58 pm
Nice to have you back ciol.

  • Diggy Posted: Oct.29 at 12:59 pm
DWade and Mike Beasley in the garden? You cant go wrong with that!

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 12:59 pm
    freakishly athtletic?

  • Jukai Posted: Oct.29 at 1:11 pm
So uh, Suns vs Spurs isn’t worthy of our attention? Really?

  • Arek Posted: Oct.29 at 1:14 pm
The warriors are disastrous.. I mean even if it’s not their fault.. the team is just cursed They had their best season in the last 15 years last year and they didnt even make the playoffs.. I mean when was hte last time you heard a team finish 48-34 and not make the playoffs?

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Oct.29 at 1:30 pm
by the way, does Maggette even play tonight? He was listed day-to-day….

  • Tuomas Posted: Oct.29 at 1:44 pm
Ahh, finally something worthwhile NBA-related. So yeah Tad, I kinda care.

  • D'bri Posted: Oct.29 at 1:53 pm
Despite the likelihood of awful basketball, I’m watching Knicks debacle tonight to see Mike D’s face as he realizes he has a full season to go.

  • Yknot Posted: Oct.29 at 2:13 pm
@Jukai Suns vs Spurs demands my attention if halftime is a battle between Shaq and Kobayashi for Nathan Hot Dogs. I’d even take Eddy Curry vs Shaq vs Kobayashi.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Oct.29 at 2:32 pm
riggs, I wouldn’t survive without League Pass. Also, I wouldn’t have it any other way, with the Hornets and Warriors. haha

  • B Deezy Posted: Oct.29 at 2:51 pm
here’s prayin that nate throws down the dunk of the year on the heat frontline…go knicks!!!

  • Not-so-average Joe Posted: Oct.29 at 2:57 pm
Tad, what makes you think Larry Bird cares?

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Oct.29 at 3:08 pm
Spurs and Suns doesn’t rate? Really?

  • j Posted: Oct.29 at 3:25 pm
The only time disastrous should be used when describing the warriors is with Al Harrington + finishing buckets, mookie blaylock, bimbo coles or Adonal + contract.

  • Josh D Posted: Oct.29 at 3:42 pm
    What abouts Spurs Suns?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Oct.29 at 4:15 pm
Spurs/Suns feels like reheated leftovers, especially in October. No need to see them until spring.

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 4:24 pm
Oberto is out tonight, has an irregular heartbeat

  • Jukai Posted: Oct.29 at 4:32 pm
Oh, you’re totally right Russ. But Miami against New York on the other hand…

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 4:32 pm
i thought there were only a few games tonight, but there’s many, OKC-mil and miami-NY aren’t worthy of anything….ATl-orl and lakers clippers should get a mention

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 4:36 pm
with Manu and oberto out the spurs’ depth is non-existant and they didn’t have much to begin with, the suns don’t have Amare i believe, so its more like reheated leftovers that spilled in the microwave.

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.29 at 4:44 pm
Depending on what it is, re-heated leftovers can be quite tasty.

  • Jukai Posted: Oct.29 at 4:53 pm
RV: I thought the Suns DID have Amare. Source?

  • Tuomas Posted: Oct.29 at 4:54 pm
    Curry out too, irregular heart.

  • Jukai Posted: Oct.29 at 5:09 pm
    you mean irregular weight?

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 5:09 pm
Tad, im not really sure, i thought i remember reading he’d be out sometime after he broke his pinky, maybe that has changed

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 5:10 pm
    i meant Jukai

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 5:10 pm
    irregular brain

  • Tuomas Posted: Oct.29 at 5:18 pm
The latter is the result of the former, but that too Jukai.

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Oct.29 at 5:21 pm
Denver @ Utah: The new-look Nuggets invade Salt Lake City, facing off against the same-look Jazz. Hope you like hearing boos, Jerry Sloan.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Oct.29 at 5:22 pm
Hawks-Magic? Definitely watch that. I get where Russ is coming from, this is the only time of the year that many teams are going to be worth watching (all full of hopes and dreams). Might as well give them a look-see now, since we’ll be seeing plenty of the real teams like Suns and Spurs later on.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Oct.29 at 5:23 pm
and RV, the Grizz are freakishly athletic.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.29 at 5:51 pm
Just they can’t win games, Mo.

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 6:02 pm
who on the grizz is freakishly athletic besides Rudy, Warrick, and Mayo?…I know 3 guys that are NOT are Gasol, darko, and Haddadi (sp?)….other guys ain’t stiffs, but not freakish either (Jaric, Walker, Buckner, Conley, Lowry, etc.)

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 6:02 pm
and incase anyone is interested, NBA.com is offering free broadband league pass until nov 11th.

  • Bruno Posted: Oct.29 at 6:06 pm
Milwaukee @ OKC… already a candidate for WORST GAME OF THE SEASON.
    and… ahn… somebody still WORKING @ slam????
    what about SUNS X SPURS???????

  • Dacre Posted: Oct.29 at 7:19 pm

Not when it’s the 800th night in a row. Excuse me if I’m not quite ready to accept the Terry Porter-led Suns.

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 8:35 pm
    Oden out 2-4 weeks…

  • RV Posted: Oct.29 at 8:49 pm
    memphis 1st posession: Artest steal
    2nd posession: Artest steal
    3rd posessin: tmac steal

  • Jb Posted: Oct.29 at 10:14 pm
    Twolves vs Kings

  • Anton Posted: Oct.30 at 1:46 am
    Suns 103
    Spurs 98
    wtf is going on?

  • [...] Quick side note, because I like talking with you all as much as I like recapping, I’ve decided to not recap every game on the schedule this year so that I can spend more time watching those games that are Worthy of My Attention and then we can discuss them. I’m still flipping with insanity thanks to League Pass, but I feel like I can sit back and watch those games that interest me a little bit more this time around. [...]
