Feel the Total Non-Excitement in Philly!

by Marcel Mutoni

With all of their wheeling and dealing this past summer, the Philadelphia Sixers were supposed to be one of the feel-good stories this season. A team led by a universally-liked veteran, and complimented with exciting youngsters, this squad was primed to be one of the more popular teams in the L. Well, let’s just say that things aren’t exactly going according to plan.

Not only are people not jumping on the Sixers’ bandgwagon across the hoops landscape, but the team can’t even get the locals to show up for their games. A combination of crummy basketball and an even crummier economy has Philly’s home attendance ranked among the worst in the Association.

From the Philadelphia Daily News:

Through four games, the Sixers are averaging 12,601 in attendance, ranking them 28th out of 30 NBA teams.

“Definitely, there was so much attention and so much money spent on the Phillies,” Jeremi Conaway, of Wanamaker’s Tickets in Center City, said yesterday. “People weren’t thinking about basketball at all. There’s only so much money to go around, and a majority of that definitely was going to the Phillies. At the same time, the Sixers’ attendance would be much better if they were playing better basketball.”

Evidently, until the product on the basketball court improves, the team is going to have to come up with some creative ways to put some butts in the seats. Perhaps, their marketing execs could reach out to the city’s unemployed?

Wow, thats a low attendance number. Brand is certainly no Iverson when it comes to putting butts in the seats.

  • T Money

They need to recruit more Dookies

  • Daleo

    Philly the Fizz!!!

  • http://nba.com/celtics/ Moose

TAD, that’s because Brand isn’t an incredible playmaker and hasn’t totally iced his reputation as an elite big because he’s coming off an injury, Just an idea.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

    agreement with TAD.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I know this Moose. Just was talking…

  • Breeze

@i agree with tad one this one …i also think since the phillies and the big win in philadelphia for obama …they not excepting a bunch of losers…and is it only me or andre ig has no idea what to do when he gets the ball?

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

    Breeze: Just you

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Pretty sure you’re all confusing philadelphia fans with halfway decent human beings. Or people with an appreciation for athletic endeavors. Which they aren’t.

  • Breeze

@jukai are you proposing that andre ig is a talented player…or is he just another althletic junkie…i mean if it aint a fast break dunk..he like the show lost out the part 27

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Wow Mo Charlo. I’m quite sure that was a million plus fans at the Phillies rally a few weeks back. I lived near Philly and know some great people from there. Get it right. I’m sure Tillery and Khalid would like a few words with you…

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

    I heard deez was there.

  • tony

Thanks Jukai; Breeze keep bagging on ‘Dre – once this team turns the corner on offense and these guys settle into their roles watch what kind of all around game he’ll bring this year. His attitude and body language on the court, if nothing else, is a million times better than last year. BTW, a jump shot is not the sole indicator of basketball talent. But whatever. The Philly fans comment is bizarre. This whole city feels stoned from the phillies/obama thing; give them time – they came around last year too. In the meantime I’m picking up lower level seats for $30. No complaints.

My interest in this story as of 11/14=ZZZZZZZ (no offense mutoni)

  • ciolkstar

Thad is really the key to this team’s success. Andre Miller looks old and they basically buried themselves by paying so much money for Brand and Iguodala.

  • ciolkstar

Mo Charlo is way off. Its also Eagles season right now. But on the real, that Brand signing was a terrible decision. In terms of marketing and basketball.

That’s going to happen when you have no shooters on your team. What good is a big post guy, with no shooters? Click on my name to check my blog fellas! Updated daily. Breakin’ it down for ya’ll.

last years biggest need? low post scorer. sixers go and get one and people are still unhappy. 2 and a half wks into the season and i hear people wishing we had josh smith instead. I seriously hate fans.

Why did they let Korver go, though?? They need a threat from deep. (I have a strong bias against Green)

  • http://www.liveddb.com DDB

D Miz—exactly right. They just double and shade the hell out of Brand rendering him pretty ineffective. They also don’t leave him much on the pick and roll. Teams try to force the other guys on the team to shoot the ball because they can’t. Iguodala was a colossal waste of money. He is not worth nearly as much as he is being paid. I mean, if it was the circus I would pay the hell out of him…but it’s not about jumping and flying through the air. It’s about putting the ball in the hole and he has trouble doing that!

Philly fans are too busy seriously injuring each other in celebration of the Phillies to care about the Sixers.

  • Ron

This is out of sync right now. Iggy hasn’t adjusted to Brand and he is also playing out of position. Dre should be playing the 3, but the team doesn’t have a real 2 guard. I think Iggy could be tradable to a team in need of a defensive minded SF who can slash and get to rim when needed. The only problem is finding that team.

  • I am the walrus

Brand should have gone bak to clipper land

  • starbury&stevey

Kyle Corver is the all time most popular baller in utah ,well behind Havlicheck…he has a standart of 5.000 females in the building per game, they sould think about it before they trade him for that Gordon“the Ugly´´Girichec(sorry ,if i type his name wrong)

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

If Iverson becomes a free agent at the end of the year, Philly should get way over the cap and sign him

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Starbury: I have seen Kyle play, i aint g@y, and i dont know what the attraction is. He is ugly as hell.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

and to all you comment miscontruers, i didnt say i was attracted to kyle korver, i said i dont know why girls are. He is hidious.

  • The Promise

  • jaymes

I’m sure attendences were pretty low in Iversons day when the Sixers were struggling..If Philly can rattle off a 10 game winning streak and push their way up the east rankings fans will show up.
