It’s Paul Pierce’s Turn to Discuss Playing Across the Pond

by Marcel Mutoni

This past summer, it seemed that virtually every big-name player in the League at one time or another hinted at the possibility of playing in Europe if the money and/or situation was right. I guess Paul Pierce was perhaps feeling left out.

Paul, like many of his League brethren, doesn’t foresee it happening anytime soon. From the Boston Herald:

“I want four or five more seasons in the NBA,” Pierce, who is signed through the 2010-11 season, said after yesterday’s practice. “I think I could do another NBA contract before I’m through, too. I have another contract here in me.

“But I think I could probably play or live over there at some point. I’ve been to Greece. I really like it there.”

In five years, Paul will be thirty-six. This is actually a pretty cool idea. Former NBA greats could conceivably turn Europe into the hoops-version of the Senior PGA Tour. Here’s to hoping that no one breaks a hip out there.

I always thought that Kobe wouldn’t go to Europe until his prime was past anyway. That’s how it should be done.

namik, he’s already been stabbed, do you think a slap is going to hurt him?

  • namik

Not really, it’d be for my personal satisfaction. He’d just start throwing up gang signs.

Why not go where you can make the most money? He’s been an NBA All-Star and won a Championship so in my mind there’s no reason not to blot to whoever gives him the most cash. Athletes are treated like commodities to be traded and sold to the highest bidder, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t take this mentality and make as much money as they can for the 10-15 years they play professionally.

Not a bad idea P2. Tear up the euros…

Even a 36-year old Pierce would light up the Euroleague.

He’d kill over there. They should be paying money to reggie miller and Alan Houston to come play. It’s not like they sent Beckham over here in his prime!

Hasn’t it been like that for a while, already? I can’t come up with names other than (my namesake) Dominique Wilkins, right now, but seems to me ageing players have been going overseas forever.

Basketball stars going to Europe is much like soccer stars coming to the states….they are have-beens who still want a big payday (see: Beckham, David)

Ryan – your employer should be worried after reading that comment. It speaks volumes about your character.

  • Gilbert Arenas

If I were PP I’d go now while I can still dominate.

Its often been the case of ‘crap’ players going overseers prior to this last rash of well known names….

    Acie Earl
    Pervis Ellison
    God Shammgod
    Terry Cummings
    DJ Holden
are a few names that come to mind initially…
even players like Darnell Mee who used to play for Denver have been to australia and played for many years…he’s now naturalised I believe.

I think players going whilst “in their prime” is a newer concept however.
