Marbury Refuses to Play (Again); Q-Rich Hates Him

by Marcel Mutoni

You know what Quentin Richardson is NOT thankful for? Stephon Marbury’s presence on the New York Knicks basketball team.

Marbury once again apparently refused to suit up last night for his injury depleted team – Mike D’Antoni was reportedly offering him a chance to start for the remainder of the season – and after the Knicks got romped by Detroit, Q-Rich could no longer hide his frustration with the whole affair.

From Newsday:

“I don’t consider him my teammate, so, I mean, whatever,” Quentin Richardson said. “He hasn’t played with us all year, he doesn’t want to play with us. He’s expressed that a second time, so whatever. I don’t look at him as a teammate because teammates don’t do that. Regardless of what you have going on with the organization or what you have going on with your coach or whatever, you’re not going to allow your teammates to be left out there the way they were left out there.

Regardless of how you’re trying to stick it to whoever. At the end of the day, we’re getting left out there and we’re shorthanded, people are hurt and people are still playing. Chris is banged up pretty bad. He’s got an ankle injury and his back is messed up pretty bad and he’s playing. But I mean, once again, I don’t really pay any attention to it because I don’t look at him as a teammate anyway.”

Ladies and germs, your New York Knicks! It’s amazing how this team consistently finds a way to sink lower than rock-bottom.

If this latest incident doesn’t lead to Marbury getting kicked off the squad, absolutely nothing will.

Good for Marbury…..he came into camp ready to play this year and Walsh and D’antoni said they didn’t want him and they refused to play him. Marbury’s just helping them keep their word.

  • rikson

Im soooooo tired of marbury…. same stuff over and over again.

  • Andy

Seriously, Tom? You’re defending Marbury on this? I have no problem whatsoever with Marbury holding tight to get what he’s owed in his contract. But, the way I see it, the Knicks still pay Marbury. Therefore, issues or not, they are entitled to call upon him to do the job he’s getting paid for.

  • Andy

In fact, by now refusing to play, isn’t he now in breach of said contract?

  • Benoit Benjamin

I disagree with that Tom, the guy gets paid a lot of money to play ball and he actually refuses to do it when he’s asked to. Not professional. He’s good, but he is a locker room cancer.

  • jay

Damn…this is better than as the world turns!

  • adams

Knicks news and no mention of LeBron, how refreshing!

  • Prentice Mcgruder

what a sorry mess. Mutoni what is the reason they havent just cut him yet?

  • Greedy_Genius

Ha Ha Ha !!! I’m laughing at all you knicks fans, Stephon has a right not to play because when he wanted to play they put him on the bench and now that the team is need of players they want him to come play and THEY WANT LEBRON TO COME PLAY FOR THEN WHEN BECOMES A FREE AGENT aint that some $hit?

  • peteb80

I think if he doesn’t want to play they should force him to either wipe sweat off the court during games or sell food and drinks in the stands.

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

    you got the point, Adams…

  • peteb80

I’d also like to see him hand out ten bucks to every fan at MSG at every game he doesn’t want to play in which would equal the $199 000 he gets paid for every game.

  • King David

thats what im talking about marbury.let them know

  • rikson

…just a born troublemaker -> doesnt matter how good he is nobody wants him anymore!

  • rikson

…plus (as mentioned) he is hurting his teammates more than anybody else (exept himselve)… Hey Steph – get lost…

  • rollezed

that’s exactly what i would do. in your face d’antoni! you deserved that! Go Steph!

  • baron samedi

you guys at slam still on marburys nuts? you lot gonna defend him to the death? they should stick him in a cupboard and lock it shut forever

  • Andy

I can’t believe anyone is seriously defending Marbury. He’s a grown man, damn it. He needs to quit being a baby, find a set from somewhere, swallow his misplaced pride, and do what he has to for his EMPLOYER. That’s the bottom line here. D’Antoni doesn’t have to play Marbury, if he chooses not to. But, when D’Antoni NEEDS him to, then that’s what he’s getting paid a stupid amount of money for. I’d throw him out and tell him to take it to court, if he wants his money.

  • Monkeyball

And, please, let’s not forget that Marbury is not THAT good. Yes, he gets 20 and 8 or so, but who wouldn’t prefer Nash, CP3, Deron or JKidd top him? Hell, I’d take Jose Calderon over Marbury right now.
Like baron samedi says, it’s time fro SLAM to recognize that Marbury is nothing but a waste of talent. An unprofessional whiner his whole career, who has nothing to brag about. A LOSER!!!!

  • rikson

true monkeyball – but he would still be a good asset to any team, IF he would behave like a grown up. Like this – he is worth nothin…

  • http://whowantsbreakfast.com Father Breakfast

Good for Marbury. I wouldn’t play either. If you know they are going to dump you next season and they had no intention of playing you, why risk injury? NYC effed him over, now they need him and they expect him to help them? They basically placed the whole blame on him. Karma is a biotch

  • Young Chris MP3

He should play. Get his value up.

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

The plot thickens for the Knicks…

  • rikson

-but yall understand: Its Marburys job to do what the coach wants hin to do!

  • rikson

    *him

  • http://violetsprite.tumblr.com/ Ulee

I know the Knicks are missing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whKAx7hZ1Fw

  • Son of Shawn

Ok, you can hate your coach, and refuse to do the job you´re payed for (and there´ll be people still defending you), but if you expect to play pro basketball in the near future and you expect that someone in the league (or wherewer) pays you for playing; maybe, only maybe, refusing to play pro basketball twice and acting like a capricious little girl doesn´t help you to keep your career alive

  • Charles

He is OBLIGATED to play for them if he is physically able. End of story. I hope the Knicks get to terminate his contract for this. Here’s my list of PGs I would prefer to Starbury: Nash, CP3, Deron, JKidd, Calderon, Tony Parker, Rose, Felton, Baron, Joe Johnson, Billups, Roy, Andre Miller, Rondo, Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson, Sessions, Stuckey, Mayo, Westbrook, Jordan Farmar… you get the picture.

  • http://www.ojhoops.blogspot.com the baconator

Good for Q-Rich for telling it like it is. Marbury has expressed before the season started that he didn’t want to play for the Knicks. When they finally give him an opportunity, he decides to prove absolutely nothing and not take it. Quite simply, Starbury is acting like a spoiled brat. The Knicks found a better replacement for him and he can’t take not being the team’s “star” player. Dude needs to go overseas to play, where I bet at least one team’ll want him

  • Boing Dynasty

    Charles, Joe Johnson?

  • Tuomas

Boing, I think the fact that he mentions non-point guards only underlines how Charles feels about this. Which is fine I guess, not a good look (no sh*t) again for Marbury.

  • Charles

Yeah, you’re right Boing Dynasty. Johnson is more of a tweener/point forward… You can take him off the list. But I’m putting Lebron on there for good measure. He can play wherever he wants, including NY! ZING!

  • Keith

Marbury saga + Lebron saga = Tedious.

  • Crook

Oh boy here we go again…ONLY 1 comment about Richardson’s comments? If Shaq said it it would be an outrage from an sub human.. lol

How does any of us know how good Marbury is opn the court now since none of us has seen him play in a loooong time. Don’t try to write about pre-season b/c he was playing against rookies and players trying to make teams.

  • Crook

I believe they should be able to terminate his contract for insubordination. If my employer doesn’t allow me to go to trial on the plum cases for whatever reason and then when all the other lawyers are not available and they come to me for a juicy trial I do NOT have the right to refuse b/c they pay me and I need to do my job regardless of how much I want to “stick it to them”. If not I’m fired, period! Oh yeah, I think Marbury sells cheap sneakers to help out the little people but I’d rather he try to sell a better example to the kids who for some reason look up to him.

  • Theo Papaloukas

many people laugh with Steph but i will really miss him when he is out of the league….i would have retired his number from all NBA teams, he is a living legend (along with A.I)and nobody can notice…STARBURY!!!STARBURY!!!

  • Crook

Richardson forgot to say that in the hood where he is from Marbury would get dealt with…Oh, I forgot he isn’t tough enough to say that b/c Marbury is in the locker room daily and they ARE in NY and the Coney Islanders would be waiting for him in the parking lot. lmao!!!

  • Crook

Hey Theo, Cosby is calling you with a cup of tainted jello pudding.. jk

Have a Great Thanksgiving SLAM Nation!

  • Charles

Crook. You can’t play without heart.. And as far as Q’s comments are concerned, he probably shouldn’t have said anything. I think the court of public opinion would be all over Marbury even without the comments being made. As a player you have to let D’antoni and Donnie take care of the mess and not let your emotions get carried away. Easier said than done. I don’t blame him for saying any of it.

  • Ryan.T.

Q-Rich said:“He hasn’t played with us all year, he doesn’t want to play with us.”
Is everybody forgetting that while the Knicks had a full squad, nobody stood up for Marbury & even wanted to play along side the guy. From my understanding Marbury indeed wanted to play, and was actually willing to come off the bench for Duhon, at the beginning of the year. But the Knicks organization and coach had different plans for him…. What were they? Nobody really knows… But his teammates and the Knicks fans weren’t missing him at any point during those games in which he received a DNP. If your a guy than you know the role the Knicks are playing here. It’s kinda similar to a guy having more than one female “friend”. If for some reason you can’t see one than you’ll call the other that’s waiting along the sideline. Marbury is handling the situation in the right manner, because before this nobody on his squad cared if he sat on the pine for the full year.

  • http://ballislife.com omar harris

you know there really is no bad guy in this situation.Marbury did come to play this season nd walsh nd dantoni refused to play him.even if you wab=nted revenge in some way against the organization;this is a selfish way to prove your point.his services would be much appreciated elsewhere im sure.

  • Mike

Why not just go play? there’s no pressure to win. He could just go after stats. I’m sure playing is more fun than sitting there pissed off. Let the coach be the asshole.

  • Mike

If Marbury really wanted to piss off the coach, start point shaving or throwing games.

  • Charles

Ryan. T.: That’s all conjecture. Your analogy of a guy who has more than one female friend is a straw man’s argument. Doesn’t matter if Marbury was willing to play then. His contract doesn’t stipulate that his coach must play him. It does however stipulate that if he is able to perform then that’s what he has to do. So you’re saying that his teammates should support him by going against management?! And put their careers and livelihoods in jeopardy?! It’s a goddammed business!! Marbury needs to suck it up and be a professional if he want to have any kind of future in the league. From everything I’ve read about Marbury he is nothing but a child in a grown man’s body. I think it’s time to take off the diapers. Oh wait, I think it’s too late cuz he already done soiled hisself. Too bad for him he doesn’t have the good dirt on D’antoni and Walsh like he did on Zeke…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

That’s on the front office. How would you feel if you knew your team wanted to trade you or buy you out and that the only reason they’re looking at you right now is that they don’t have enough warm bodies out there. They messed up big time with the whole Steph fiasco. The fact that the GM had no idea that Mike D was not going to play Steph is appaling. That should have been dealt with during the summer.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I wonder what the Vegas odds are on Q punching Steph right in that stupid “3″ tattoo before the All-Star break?

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

doesn’t Marbury have a point when he said that it was not him who decides whether he plays or not? He says all the time that in the beginning of the season he met with D’Antoni, and D’Antoni said he wants to go forward without Marbury. So when you’re told you’re not needed and now all of a sudden you ‘re needed? I can imagine that Marbury doesn’t want to suit up anymore. I know I’m playing the devil’s advocate here, and I know dude is paid tens of millions of dollars for something that any of us would do for free, I’m not that dumb. However, if what Marbury says is true, I kind of understand, but I’m not justifying his actions in any way.

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I have no problem with Marbury not playing for a Coach who said he didn’t want Marbury to be a part of this team. David Stern needs to step in and get this ish resolved. Enough is enough.

  • WhiteOut

    Marbury should be EXECUTED
