Pistons To Trade Billups, McDyess For Iverson

by Ryne Nelson

You heard the rumors. You thought it wouldn’t happen because the season already started, things were rolling. Chauncey Billups is a much better fit in the D than almost any other guard.

But it’s official official, according to a phone call from MLive’s A. Sherrod Blakely:

The Detroit Pistons have reached a tentative agreement to trade Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson. Neither player was at this morning’s shoot-around. Team officials said that more information would be forthcoming later today.

First thing that comes to mind: Stuckey better come up off that No. 3.

Second thing: Detroit is going to love A.I. The little guard’s hard-nosed play will quickly anoint him a king.

But this trade also makes something else official: This is the Pistons’ last chance for an NBA Title…at least for a while.

Iverson’s contract goes off the books after this season. He’s likely not coming back, unless the Pistons can land a championship this season. Rasheed is also coming off the books, and he’s shown no desire to do anything next year other than chill on the beach and call it a career.

And…for the Nuggets. Billups seemed like he’d be a fixture in Detroit, but if he was to play anywhere other than the Palace, it has to be with his hometown Nuggets. Denver traded Chauncey in 2000 to the Magic although he was injured and never really got a fair chance. Since then, Chauncey has earned the nickname Mr. Big Shot and proved he belongs in the Brotherhood.

But can he lead a franchise? We’re fixin’ to find out…

Can’t wait to see this sh*t in person…plus the Pistons national TV game quotent goes up a ton now.

  • Joe Posted: Nov.3 at 1:31 pm
    very very interesting

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 1:31 pm
a red Pistons #3 jersey is gonna make me cry (not really, but possibly)

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.3 at 1:32 pm
The Nuggets have badly needed a leader on and off the court and now seem to have found it (again.)
    I’m just saying…..
http://slamonline.com/online/nba/2008/09/slamonline-top-50-chauncey-billups-no-25/ I admire Iverson tremendously, but this isn’t gonna necessarily make Detroit a better team. Guaranteed it will for Denver.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 1:33 pm
And E: I didn’t totally eat ALL of my words. I did say the Dyess/Billups for Iverson trade was a “maybe” in my book, so whatever. I’m completely caught off guard by this.

  • Tom Posted: Nov.3 at 1:33 pm
    speechless!!

  • LaJames Posted: Nov.3 at 1:34 pm
I must be the only one that thinks this is going to make Detroit a real championship contender instead of an ECF loser again. 20 and 10 will be AIs’ stats for the rest of the season. AI has always been an underrated passer but now he has guys that are going to knock down Js from all over the place. 20 games to get acclimated to each other and then a run through the league and a ring for AI!

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 1:34 pm
Tad where is your Iverson Piece on SKO? Nowhere, go write it.

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 1:35 pm
    I want a AI Pistons jersey…..now!!!!

  • RV Posted: Nov.3 at 1:36 pm
not bad, ‘dyess can still play

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: Nov.3 at 1:37 pm
WOW. I’m pretty stunned by this. I’m not sure how Iverson is going to fit, but I hope he does.

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Nov.3 at 1:38 pm
    get a red hot no3 jersey…

  • Krishan Posted: Nov.3 at 1:38 pm
    Joe Dumars everybody!!!
    *clapclapclapclap*

  • Zee! Posted: Nov.3 at 1:38 pm
    Awwww Sh*t!!!!!

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.3 at 1:39 pm
Speaking of needing to write something….
i’ll have some extensive analysis in tomorrow’s Cub Scouts column.

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Nov.3 at 1:42 pm
    Congrats Cub.

  • peteb80 Posted: Nov.3 at 1:42 pm
Didn’t AI just recently say that he wanted to play until he’s 40?

  • NBA-JERSEY-KING Posted: Nov.3 at 1:43 pm
i dont see why Detroit would do this??

  • vmcb Posted: Nov.3 at 1:43 pm
    wowwwwwwwwwww

  • Chris O'Leary Posted: Nov.3 at 1:43 pm
    holy sh*t! Love the drama!

  • Jess Posted: Nov.3 at 1:44 pm
Wow…I like this – I couldnt wait for AI to come back to the East…now all that needs to happen is a ‘chip in Detroit – I hope this works…it HAS to work for AI.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 1:45 pm
Hey this is wrong! Cheik Salmb was traded too!

  • AB_40 Posted: Nov.3 at 1:45 pm
wow, nice move for both teams… if it goes through

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 1:46 pm
wouldnt it be funny if Cheik Salmb or Mcdysse pull a Devaun George?

  • peteb80 Posted: Nov.3 at 1:46 pm
I don’t see the Pistons winning anything this year unless I heavily underestimate the effect of “holy sh1t we got AI”.

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: Nov.3 at 1:47 pm
Dyess goes back to Denver, did anyone think of his reunion with somewhere he used to not just play, but star?

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Nov.3 at 1:48 pm
As much as I don’t think this will work,AI and Rasheed being on the same team will be spectacular.

  • riggs Posted: Nov.3 at 1:48 pm
    “we got allen iverson y’all!”

  • Tom Posted: Nov.3 at 1:48 pm
Is Denver a lock for a playoff spot with this move, Billups is the pg and 2nd scorer Melo has needed from day one?

  • SMK Posted: Nov.3 at 1:49 pm
As long as Maxiell doesn’t accidentally eat him the Pistons should be fine.

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 1:50 pm
Denver has a good shot at the playoffs now.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Nov.3 at 1:51 pm
I like it for both teams.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 1:51 pm
I don’t see this working for detroit

  • Adam Fleischer Posted: Nov.3 at 1:52 pm
All I ask for is AI to get a championship, but I don’t think they’ll be able to do it this year in Detroit. Although, he’ll definitely have a better chance than he did in Denver, that’s for sure.

  • riggs Posted: Nov.3 at 1:52 pm
    pistons? we talkin bout pistons?

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 1:52 pm
JR Smith is going to get the most out of this deal for Denver, MIP award for the kid this year after he averages like 23

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 1:52 pm
…remember when adding AI to your team would have been considered a totally positive thing. my, how times have changed…

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Nov.3 at 1:53 pm
    denver has the advantage…

  • riggs Posted: Nov.3 at 1:53 pm
who’s playing SG for denver and PG for detroit now?

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 1:55 pm
nic who says it still isnt?

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 1:55 pm
riggs: SG- JR Smith PG- Stuckey

  • blackjack Posted: Nov.3 at 1:56 pm
I heard McDyess had no interest in leaving Detroit at this point in his career. Does he have the ability to block this trade?

  • riggs Posted: Nov.3 at 1:56 pm
if only camby had stayed cot damn!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 1:58 pm
McDyss is not staying with the Nuggets when he gets traded it will be like Jerry Stackhouse in Dallas he just making the deal work financially

  • peteb80 Posted: Nov.3 at 1:59 pm
Financially this is really great for the Pistons, they traded $50 million in guaranteed salaries including this season in exchange for $22 million and they have that coming off the cap next summer.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:00 pm
NBK, stop making stuff up. McDysse enjoyed being a Denver Nugget back in the day. You are probaly either too young or too stupid to remember that.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:02 pm
HAHA Betcats once again you just assume i make stuff up

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:03 pm
hahaha NBK thats because you always do

  • d.Y. Posted: Nov.3 at 2:03 pm
Wow! This is what I come home to. I’m speechless. Good thing I have a keyboard.

  • Alpha-bet Posted: Nov.3 at 2:04 pm
This is definitely a right now trade, a really good one for both teams. And the Pistons got the energy bolt they needed to fave the fans give a damn again. I’m here in the D, and the first couple Pistons game were DEAD! I love em, but it was the same old Pistons. That just changed today.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:05 pm
It has nothing to do with him enjoying being a nugget child, it has to do with the fact that he only wants to play for a title and is already an established played in detroit. I don’t need to explain myself you’ll understand when he does not play a game for the nuggets

  • BigWalt206 Posted: Nov.3 at 2:06 pm
Two ?s How does this help the Pistons? What # will AI wear? …at least JoeD was finally true to his word.

  • Tuomas Posted: Nov.3 at 2:06 pm
Jesus Christ! This needs some time to sink in… Too bad for Dyess.

  • peteb80 Posted: Nov.3 at 2:08 pm
NBK, in my understanding Denver would have to waive or buy out McDyess in your scenario and I don’t think anybody would pick him up off waivers with his 14 million in remaining salary and I guess he wouldn’t be too interested in giving up too much of that in a buyout either.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:08 pm
NBK, when i see Mcdysse rockin a Blue/Yellow jersey that says NUGGETS on it, we will both know who is right.

  • Ken Posted: Nov.3 at 2:09 pm
First thing: Stuckey better not give up #3. He’s the future of that franchise, and he’s earned that number. Second thing: Detroit will love A.I. for about two months. Then they’ll start getting annoyed with him just like Denver did. All the little and big things that Chauncey did for the Pistons will be sorely missed. With no solid starting point guard, Detroit has no shot at a title.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:10 pm
Or he makes the midlevel and denver has to pay his contract regardless of who picks him up. All his contract does is make Billups even with Iverson. Antonio will still play for detroit it is not very hard to understand

  • Cordeazy Posted: Nov.3 at 2:10 pm
soooooooo stupid. when this year ends it will lead to 20 years of the dreaded “rebuilding” process. as a Pistons Fan I would rather three more years of eastern conference finals flameouts, then one chance this year, and then no more until i have grandkids

  • [...] The Detroit Pistonshave reached a tentative agreement to trade Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to the Denver Nuggets for Allen Iverson. [...]

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.3 at 2:11 pm
    Both teams practiced hard.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:13 pm
NBK you are talkin stupid right now. Why would Denver want to do that? Why would Mcdysse want to leave a team that he has a history with and that also has a great chance at making the playoffs to go play for a team that traded him?

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:13 pm
I should write something on this, but I have no idea where to even start….

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:13 pm
Great as he is, the Nuggets are on a different schedule. It may make sense for the Nuggets — with several forwards under contract — to buy out McDyess as a cost-cutting move.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:14 pm
Thats why it would be good for denver, and McDyess as i already stated is playing to win a title not make the playoffs

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:14 pm
Detroit is my favorite team and Iverson is my favorite player, so I should be happy, right?? Anyone?????

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 2:14 pm
TAD, today, really IS Towelie from South Park.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 2:15 pm
Totally shocked by this. Like, wow.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:15 pm
why NBK? Why would the Nuggets want to buyout Mcdysse? He fills out their forward Rotation perfectly. Mcdysse-Nene-KMart is a nasty rotation

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:16 pm
and to cordeazy if you haven’t noticed the pistons are now the free agent power player next summer when they have over 30 mill coming off the books

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 2:16 pm
TADOne: Look at it this way. The Pistons were NOT going to win the way they were assembled currently. This was a gamble, but it’s a gamble that COULD push them over the edge. Look positively.

  • James The Balla Posted: Nov.3 at 2:17 pm
    HOLY SH!T BALLS!!!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:17 pm
There is one sticking point to the deal, though. McDyess does not want to go to Denver, and a source close to him says “he will not put on a Nuggets uniform” and may opt to retire.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:17 pm
    boooyah

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:18 pm
I meant to give a look to Cub for predicting this. Good call Cub!

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:19 pm
NBK where did you read that? Link it to your name. Until then you are just making this up.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:19 pm
thats from nba.com what i put up earlier was from true hoop then if you listen to stephan a the guy who originally announced the trade (not really a reliable source but he is getting traded so the guy knows something) he says mcdyess wont play a game for the nuggets either

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.3 at 2:19 pm
I WILL be writing something on this and other things tomorrow Tad. Hopefully my writing will do my thoughts justice.

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 2:19 pm
Gee, Jukai FINALLY got why this move would be made……chucklehead. JUST WIN BABY!!!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:20 pm
    http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-36-1/Joe-Dumars-Strikes-Again.html

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:20 pm
I totally forgot Stuckey is wearing #3 right now. I’m so happy I didn’t buy his jersey.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:21 pm
I don’t make anything up BET that would be childish

  • James The Balla Posted: Nov.3 at 2:21 pm
This is a really good trade both ways!!!

  • Bryant Reeves Posted: Nov.3 at 2:21 pm
Absolutely crazy. My first thought: Will Michael Curry have the balls to stand up to Iverson and make him follow the system, or are we headed for “practice??!?” part 2?

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:21 pm
@NBK: McDyess has only one year left on his contract. He’s essentially thrown-in for his contract, so I’m sure the Nuggets wouldn’t mind if he retired.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:21 pm
Shai: I’ll need a whole day just to wrap my head around this. Two days in a row worth of “Change”. Well, hopefully.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:22 pm
NBK i will belive it when i see it. Tad, now you can get a old Stuckey jersey for 20 bucks.

  • Petter Posted: Nov.3 at 2:22 pm
NBK: My thoughts exactly. This sucks since I don´t have JR in my fantasy team.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 2:22 pm
Eboy: I don’t think it’s going to work unless Rip is also traded. I’m just telling TADOne to look on the bright side.
Also, at least Iverson will make the playoffs.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:22 pm
thats what i’m sayin ryne thank you

  • James The Balla Posted: Nov.3 at 2:22 pm
Melo will have a great season now!!

  • Drex Posted: Nov.3 at 2:23 pm
I actually think the deal is a good one for the Pistons. Billups has had some nagging leg injuries the last few years and wore down as evidenced by not-so-solid performances in the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat in 06 and the Cavs in 07. As solid as the Pistons have been, they’ve lacked a true difference-maker on the offensive end. Guys like Rip, Prince and Rasheed are good but they feed off of others to get their points. Iverson is a guy who can create for himself. The Pistons have been bounced from the Eastern Conference Finals the last few years, and were probably due for a change or two. Dumars preached change during the offseason but up until today, no moves were made. Chemistry-wise, it may take some time for the Pistons to adjust but by the end of the year, I expect this trade to work out well for Detroit.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:23 pm
Ryne: HUH?! McDyess can still play. He is better than Kenyon Martin, trust me.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:25 pm
doesn’t matter if mcdyess refuses to play tad

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:27 pm
the last time dumars made a move in the middle of the year they won a title so we can’t totally doubt the decision

  • Niio Posted: Nov.3 at 2:27 pm
Imagine trying to guard Hamilton and NOW Iverson in the east? Everyone is going to lose 5 pounds a quater chasing them around.

  • einstein Posted: Nov.3 at 2:27 pm
good for the nuggets, bad for the pistons, they’re getting older and older…

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:27 pm
Why would McDyess do that? He loved Denver when he was there.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:28 pm
NBK he wont refuse to play. He doesnt hate Denver. Its not like they traded him to Sacremento or to the Clippers. The Nuggets could go deep into the playoffs with him.

  • Chicago Posted: Nov.3 at 2:28 pm
Dumars is smoking crack, this will make Denver a much better team and lessen Detroit’s chances at winning anything. Do you really think that Rip will continue to run through picks and screens so he can watch AI shoot all night long?

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:28 pm
he wants a title what is so hard to understand he doesn’t want to be somewhere he used to love he wants to love a piece of gold

  • James The Balla Posted: Nov.3 at 2:29 pm
Man this trade is amazing. I cannot wait to see Iverson and Billiups. Exiting sh1t!!! Im a bigger Billiups fan but … makes me soooo happy!!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:29 pm
No they can’t bet that was retarted the nuggets can’t get out of the first round IF they do make the playoffs

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:30 pm
Einstein is obviously not smart. Iverson is only a year older than Billups.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.3 at 2:30 pm
Ryne, thank you for that mention.
But, I think McDyess fills an essential need due to their super thin frontcourt. He can still play and I might be wrong, but i would love to pay him just 13 over the next two to give me 25 mins while keeping Kenyon and Nene fresh. Now that role is being filled by Birdman. I already have about 1000 words done for my breakdown.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:30 pm
Co-sign, TAD. If anyone, I thought McDyess wouldn’t mind the deal. He played the best years of his career in Denver.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 2:30 pm
ai, rip, tay, sheed, amir(for 15 minutes). plus WALTER HERRMANN!!!!!

  • Kevin Wilson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:30 pm
It’s all about cap room. Pistons figured they’re probably not winning with the same crew this year, so the worst thing that can happen is they not win with Iverson and get $21 million off the books.

  • rav Posted: Nov.3 at 2:30 pm
anyone want a white nuggets AI jersey?

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:31 pm
…and Iverson certainly doesn’t play like he’s older than Billups.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:32 pm
@Tarzan: I’m thinking the Pistons want to play Amir more like 25-30 minutes per game this season. The only problem is his fouls. But *that* is entirely off-topic. :-)

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:33 pm
NBK, soberly tell me that a Billups/JR Smith/Carmelo Anthony/Mcdysse/Nene with K-Mart as the 6th man could not get out of the first round? Who is gonna beat them? Dallas? No Lakers? Yes San Antino? Maybe Phoneix? No New Orleans? Yes Utah? Maybe. THey got a shot, stop knocking Denver’s hustle

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:33 pm
It is not about whether or not McDyess fits in with denver, it is not about him loving denver, it is about his goals as a 35 year old basketball player without a title

  • Chris Ujma Posted: Nov.3 at 2:33 pm
he should take jersey number 41, because it looks like the letters A.I….
And yes, that is going to be my only constructive contribution to the topic

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:34 pm
you just said New Orleans won’t beat denver in the first round because you expect denver to gaurd anyone let alone chris paul. you proved how ignorant you are

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:35 pm
secondly denver will not get homecourt in the playoffs no way no how not in the west, i think denver would be competitive if it were in the east but in the west denver will be lucky to get to the playoffs. you forgot that denver can’t beat houston either in your little list. And no way in hell they beat Utah although Phoenix would be a great series

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.3 at 2:35 pm
NBK, at least he has to move from Detroit to Denver. Basketball, aside.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:37 pm
    True that cub

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:37 pm
Cub, you have 1000 words on this already?!? Holy balls.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 2:37 pm
Like the Shaq for Marion trade last year, except the players don’t suck!

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 2:38 pm
I don’t like AI at the 1 for the Detroit. Maybe slide Tay to the 4 and Sheed to the 5? That way Stuckey can start at the 1 and defend 2s?

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:38 pm
The pistons should turn around and flip iverson to LAL for Odom and Farmar

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:38 pm
NBK i said they would. I said the Lakers and the Hornets WILL beat them and the Spurs and Jazz Might beat them

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 2:39 pm
@ BETCATS – i would check with Melo and Iggy about the vaunted “iverson effect” in recent years – remember that whole thing about superstars making thier teammates better? no? that whole pistons team first concept just got chucked out the window, just like AI will chuck op 1,500 shots this year. though it seems like you found another whipping boy in NBK, so i will just leave it alone.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:39 pm
i konw it wont happen just sayin

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 2:41 pm
A Stuckey/AI backcourt is gonna be faster than the 2006 Suns.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:43 pm
So you think they will beat San Antonio then lol i read your little list wrong but you still say they might beat the spurs? and teh jazz? go to sleep the spurs are not going to lose to a team they have repeatedly beaten in past years

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Nov.3 at 2:43 pm
MY GOOD GOD. DETROIT IS IN TORONTO ON WEDNESDAY. Please, please, please, please let this go through and let Ivy be in the building.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Nov.3 at 2:44 pm
Cub, I read that they will buy McDyess out and he will go back to Detroit? Is this correct?

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 2:44 pm
i really like this move by dumars. chauncey has been falling off for a couple years now, especially in the playoffs.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:45 pm
Holly, please, please, PLEASE don’t play with my emotions!

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 2:45 pm
attn: stuckey will still be coming off the bench. next year?

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:46 pm
@B.: Is Stuckey really that fast? He’s a beast at the basket, but he doesn’t have Iverson’s speed (although, from what I read, he’s a geezer already).

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 2:46 pm
there goes detroits “were gonna give tay the ball more and make him an all star”

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 2:48 pm
Ryne: Stuckey is fast….for his size. He is more strong than fast. And yes, he is still going to be coming off the bench.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:49 pm
NBK i said they have a shot because the Spurs are getting OLD and the Jazz are always injured. As for Nic, thats not fair about Iggy, they only played toeghter when Iggy was a young player and was not going to do much anyway. I do remeber the AI to AI quite well though. I think the whole world does.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:52 pm
When have the jazz been injured come playoff time bet? and what has given you any evidence the spurs would lose in the first round because they are “getting old” duncan is 31 going on 32, him being the oldest of their “big 3″ i don’t see them losing to the nuggets and neither does anyone else who knows the league

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:53 pm
And to Nic, Melo’s numbers have gone up with iverson and if you look at it so did iggy’s

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:53 pm
And to Nic, Melo’s numbers have gone up with iverson and if you look at it so did iggy’s

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:54 pm
I love watching Stuckey. As said so many times, his game is very similar to Dwyane Wade’s (although, he’ll never come near the same level). All I can think of now is the Eastern Conference Finals–this will be one of the most epic ECFs in the past decade.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 2:55 pm
Cleveland and Boston will be epic haha

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 2:56 pm
BET, you got a good day off from school to be fuc*ing around here.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 2:58 pm
    Co-sign, Eboy.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 2:58 pm
THey are injured always injured in the regular season, so they can never play up to their full potential in the playoffs. But that goes for most teams in the L too. As for the Spurs, if you dont think they are getting old, your deffintion of old must be John McCain. Have you seen the way they are playing? I am just saying, you put a whole bunch of 30 something year olds on a team to matchup agianst a younger team like the Nuggets, their will be problems. Also, the fact they have 0 rookies that do any playing and that TD is a 11 year vet, Bruce Bowen is a 12 year vet, Kurt Thomas is a 13 year vet, Oberto was playing overseas for a long while before he came to the NBA, Micheal Finely is a 13 year vet, and Tony Parker and Ginobli are both in their 7th years definatly makes them old,

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Nov.3 at 2:59 pm
Iverson is suposed to play for a gully city. Denver just wasn’t cutting it. Powder blue?

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:00 pm
the first part of that rant was about the Jazz, and it is all directed at NBK. Also Jaques Vaugh (Tony Parker’s reserve who will start some games this year as soon as Tony gets a small trivial injury that puts him out 1-2 weeks like always) is a 11 year vet. NBK the spurs are old!

  • sko Posted: Nov.3 at 3:01 pm
The East is in the house, omg Yo we may get a chance to see what we’ve never seen. AI playing 75-80 games like an all-star game. Detroit is instantly the most talented team he’s ever been on, and while he may not average 1O, I think his assists definitely go up

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:02 pm
Eboy its cold and rainy outside but i gotta walk to the store later today to buy some bleach. It is not that good of a day.

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:03 pm
right, right, its all about individual numbers. somehow, i think that is missing the point. like so many of AI’s teams have missed the playoffs recently…

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: Nov.3 at 3:03 pm
Yeah, where will Dyess go after he’s bought out? Nene and Kenyon with the Birdman is a fine frontcourt rotation.

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 3:05 pm
So everyone’s buying AI at the 1?

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:05 pm
McDyess will come back to Detroit if he is bought out, I would just like to know where Holly heard that??

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 3:05 pm
Doesn’t Detroit get a lot of salary cap space from this deal? So they can sign somebody from the 2003 Draft class? Seems like a winner for both teams. Denver gets better right now, and Detroit is going to have more flexibility to rebuild with it’s young guys and adding a young superstar. Dwade, Lebron, Bosh, somebody from that class with take the money from Detroit.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:07 pm
Nic if you want to blame that on Iverson and not Billy King you have a few issues. When the Sixers were built around Iverson they reached the finals. When Billy King went crazy, he traded key parts of that finals team away and turned the sixers into a team that barely ever made the playoffs. It was King’s fault not Iverson.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Nov.3 at 3:08 pm
Let’s not talk about this Tad. I feel like we are tempting fate with any talk of McDyess and buyouts, etc. SO lalalallalalallalla. Whoooo all of you Americans VOTE tomorrow! :)

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:08 pm
Z: I’m……..not sold on it completely. But, they will be playing him there. Iverson wants a ring BAD, so i’m sure he’ll make it work.
Allenp: That is exactly what it would do, but i’m not banking on one of those guys taking the Pistons money. I guess we’ll see.

  • niQ Posted: Nov.3 at 3:09 pm
this is gona be an interesting season

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 3:10 pm
detroit needs to offer bosh the max

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:10 pm
    they should sign Bosh.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:11 pm
well i gotta go brace the cold weather to get some bleach. I am out for now.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 3:11 pm
Does this move send Rip to the bench? Because starting Iverson at the one is not going to make things better for Detroit. And is Iverson going to be expected to defend? That’s a problem.
We shall see. I don’t particularly like this deal for Detroit, but I hope I’m really wrong. However, Denver should be able to get out of the first round if Melo plays up to his potential. It’s all on him right now.
He’s got a bonfide point who defends and shoots. He’s got a super scoring two guard. and he’s got three legit big men. What else does a super star need?
I don’t think Iverson made Melo worse, but I don’t think he made Melo better either. Now, Melo and George Karl have a shot to do some real work.
And for those folks who said Iverosn retarded Igoudala’s growth, y’all really haven’t watched Iggy play. He’s doing the same things he always did, just less efficiently.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:11 pm
NBK you can come back now.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:11 pm
Bosh would certainly be the best fit, but he LOVES Toronto. I’m sure Holly can co-sign this.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:12 pm
Allenp that was NBK who said that. Just wanted to clear that up before i press the shut down button. PEACE

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:13 pm
Allenp: Rip is NOT going to the bench. Iverson will run the point. Stuckey will back up both guard spots and Tay will even handle some PG duties from time to time.

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:14 pm
issues. funny. i mean, true, but funny coming from an online stranger that seems to take this AI thing perhaps a bit too personally. my point is this – AI is not an NBA winner. in my opinion his style of play does not fit in with any real winning team model. and while im not sure how you can refute that, i am sure that you will try. and i will appreciate your efforts.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 3:14 pm
holly, voting is one of the most pointless endeavors a citizen of this country can partake. this meaningless show they shuffle around every four years is a facade meant to persuade people to believe they have a say in what the government is doing. “for the people, by the people, of the people” was murdered a long time ago.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 3:15 pm
Anyway, I’m about to step my league pass game up now. I wasn’t really thrilled about watching the Nuggets this year given the fact they had no shot to do anything. But, the Pistons still have shot in the East. Boston is the only threat, so all they need is an injury to one of the big three, and things are straight.
Because no matter what problems you have with Iverson, he will not get shut down by the Cavs the same way Billups has. It ain’t happening. Nobody on Cleveland’s squad wants to see AI.
    Nobody.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:15 pm
    i said what?

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 3:16 pm
    Nic
Good for you on your opinion. Define winning.
Because I always thought that if you won more games than you lost, than you were a winner. What exactly is your definition?

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 3:16 pm
This is awful. Someone said this will be good for pistons fans but i disagree…. me and several others I have talked to give up on the pistons altogether because of this. To me pistons without billups and dyess is nonsense. This is the beginning of the end for the pistons…. at least for a long long time

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:17 pm
Nic iverson has missed the playoffs two times since 1999 shut up you are just pullin sht out your ass

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:18 pm
in pro sports, i define winning as a championship. is there another metric?

  • O-Easy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:18 pm
McDyess & Billups on the Nuggets? What is this 1998?

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 3:20 pm
@TAD: Remember when I said in the Post Up last season that the Pistons would not be in the Finals for another 10 years…I’m starting to sweat after this deal…

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:20 pm
you can’t judge a basketball player on if he wins titles as a winner seeing as how it is a team sport, you must think 80% of the league is losers and your the one on your computer

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 3:20 pm
Those matchup thingies only work on paper. The Lakers don’t have anybody that can guard AI for 40+ minutes either but they still beat the sh– out of Denver last year. They also had Vlad Rad defending Pierce in the Finals and he didn’t average 50 ppg. Cleveland has excellent team defense, rotations will be made.

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:21 pm
oh, you guys must be talking about posters and sneaker deals – i got it. my bad. yeah, youre right – i liked that stuff when i was in high school as well.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:23 pm
Nic you should just go talk to yourself because when we watch a guy win and make it to the playoffs year after year we tend to grow some respect for him and your obviously a hater

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:23 pm
Echead: Um, what?! Dude, Detroit is not “giving up” on anything. Are you serious? Iverson is still one of the top players in the league. I love both Billups and Dyess, but the Pistons haven’t lived up to expectations with either of them (not blaming them or anyone else).
I want to thank you for snapping me back into reality.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:25 pm
Ryne: Yes, I called you an idiot then. They were still “title contenders” no matter what you or anyone else thought. I believed that.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 3:25 pm
ai was in denver for only 1.5 seasons.

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:25 pm
How is this so hard to grasp from a one year run for a team that had a hard time advancing for the last 4 years past the Eastern Conference Finals? AI is not the centerpiece for a 5 year rebuilding program, he’s a shot of adreneline for 95 games plus, with some really good talent around him, in a conference where only one team is a step above anyone else, the Pistons are now the worst kind of wild card, for any opponet a strongly structured defensive minded unit, with one of the greatest scorers in the HISTORY of the game able to freelance if needed.

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:26 pm
heh, NBK, weren’t you supposed to go get some bleach for your mom or something? dont worry, after school cartoons come on in just a little while..

  • ENDS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:26 pm

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:26 pm
    No offense, of course Ryne.

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 3:26 pm
I’m not saying the pistons give up… I was saying me and the friends I’ve been talking to give up on the pistons. I was reacting to what someone said about iverson bringing fans back to the pistons… I was disagreeing saying that it’s pushing me away… far away

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:27 pm
If ya’ll don’t see that, you may as well vote for John McCain.

  • ENDS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:28 pm

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:29 pm
i think so ends i think so

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:29 pm
Echead: I’m a HUGE Pistons fan in case you aren’t aware, so i’m a bit perplexed by what you say. Do you NOT like Iverson? I root for the Detroit Pistons and players change teams all the time. Detroit has had a good run with this solid core for 4+ seasons, but it isn’t anymore. That is the nature of the business. I will still root for the Pistons.

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:30 pm
this is hilarious. it is pretty funny to be called ignorant by someone with no grammar. not sayin, just sayin.

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:30 pm
AI=king of Philadelphia=blue collar town Detroit=blue collar town+A.I.=Present King of Motown.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:32 pm
Okay guys, here’s the question… if you do NOT think Rip and Iverson can get along… who would you trade for to put together a championship team using Hamilton as the trade bait?

  • ENDS Posted: Nov.3 at 3:32 pm
So this puts an end to the D in the ECF?

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:33 pm
Hamilton and Iverson will be fine together Tayshun will run the offense more than you think

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:34 pm
Why would Hamilton and Iverson be fine together? Who changes up whose game?

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:34 pm
    too funny.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:34 pm
Jukai: I think Rip and AI can work. I would need to think about it more before breaking it down.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:35 pm
    ends what the ecf?

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:35 pm
    Jukai: Why wouldn’t they??

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:36 pm
they both run around looking for the ball lol that will be chaotic but iverson won’t throw up too much crap and rip will get the ball in his spots, its not like billups puts up more dimes the AI anyway. Does anyone realize the Pistons loose nothing in terms of assists

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:37 pm
Well, because Hamilton scores points on isos and coming off screens/cutting, which depends on constant ball movement to ensure he’s in the right spot, which also depends on having space, and since Iverson loves to dribble all over the court, especially on the inside where it would be hard to get the ball to Hamilton, and since Billups always kept one eye on Hamilton to see if he had broken free from his man and Iverson will be keeping one eye on the basket and one eye on his defender and nothing else unless it catches his eye, and becasue neither of them can spot up shoot… yeah…

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.3 at 3:37 pm
detroit will be fine. ai+rip+tay+amir+SHEED!+stuckey+babyeatinmaxiell+herrmann+no flip=trip to the finals

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 3:38 pm
Detroit’s not going anywhere with AI playing the 1. Who’s gonna deliver it to Rip on those curls? No seriously, Iverson’s a small 2 and that’s that. He has the tools to play 1 (handles, court vision, leadership)but refuses to approach the game like a 1.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 3:38 pm
@Tad:Not enough screens to go around? I think they’ll be fine together. This just made the Pistons fun to watch again. Yea!

  • Myles Brown Posted: Nov.3 at 3:38 pm
All I know is that Allen Iverson has been handed the keys to the second best team in a weak a** conference. If he can’t succeed now *gasp!* then maybe he’s not even the 18th best player in the league.

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 3:39 pm
Herrmann was pretty sweet vs. the wizards. I’d like to see him play like that every night.

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 3:39 pm
Jukai : I agree with everything except the spotup shooting part. Rip can do that, all day everyday.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:41 pm
Z: yeah, I had to rush that out because my co-worker came up to me. Rip can’t spot up shoot with a guy on him, meant to say, sorta rushed it and it came out fabricatively wrong

  • tealish Posted: Nov.3 at 3:41 pm
    MYLES, NO!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:41 pm
Iverson is not as bad ya’ll make him sound, its not like he dribbles every 24 second shot clock away, plus iverson will be keen on keeping his teammates happy he is not going to want to screw anything up in his best shot for a title and a contract year. Rip will be involved maybe a little less but also wouldn’t iverson get rip more shots by driving and kickin out? Billups hasn’t been one to get by a defender on a consistent bases in like 2 years

  • Myles Brown Posted: Nov.3 at 3:42 pm
I hope it works out, but adding a player who dominates the ball to a team that thrives on ball movement sounds sketchy to me.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:42 pm
MYLES: THEN WHAT DOES THAT MAKE GILBERT ARENAS?!?!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:43 pm
NBK: Rip doesn’t get shots by standing in one spot!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:43 pm
    haha jukai with the serve

  • tealish Posted: Nov.3 at 3:43 pm
As much as we say Iverson never gets old, I would’ve loved for this trade to happen back in 2003.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Nov.3 at 3:44 pm
And it would be hilarious if Detroit ended up getting Bron after passing on Melo. All cause they traded for Iverson.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 3:44 pm
Pistons will win the East against the Celtics in 7, and go on to win the title. After this season, Rasheed will retire, and Iverson is going to take a huge pay cut and sign with the Sixers. Watch..

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:45 pm
Ok Jukai, i’ll offer a rebuttal: Iverson has shown he can reign in his game when he has to; he has done that for the last 2 years in Denver. He is not a terrible PG as some of ya’ll seem to think. No doubt he is a combo guard who likes to score, but he also likes to win. Are you telling me that he couldn’t fit into the Detroit system for the betterment of the team? Also, Rip does more than just run around screens. I’m tired of people thinking that is all he does; he isn’t a one-trick pony. Also, Detroit will be utilizing Tay to initiate the offense more and also playing a lot of 3-guard lineups. 1 more thing: Rip is not selfish. He doesn’t have to shoot and will accept a smaller role.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:45 pm
he will now basically, but still that makes it even harder for rips defender to guard him, now he has to help on iverson and keep tabs on running rip? Rip will get his shots don’t worry.

  • nic Posted: Nov.3 at 3:46 pm
    yup. still funny.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:48 pm
The pistons as a hole will probably speed up quit a bit, especially if McDyess does not end up back in a detroit uni. Which translates to inflated numbers for everybody

  • Bryan Posted: Nov.3 at 3:48 pm
Co sign Eboy. I’ve been saying that.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:48 pm
good punctuation nic (comma) like the grammer (semi-colon) good work

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:49 pm
Myles: That is my worry. That is what Billups did so well for the Pistons. Oh well, bring on the Iverson Era!

  • Diogo Posted: Nov.3 at 3:50 pm
Sucks for AI, getting pushed around like that. He deserves more respect. Pistons likely won’t resign him. Can’t he just go back to Philly?

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:50 pm
Shia, it must be an intelligence thing……it’s a move FOR THIS SEASON!!!!!!

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:50 pm
I’ve officially gave up on getting work done today.

  • Double You-J Posted: Nov.3 at 3:51 pm
Knicks buyout Steph… Pistons pick up Steph. It may not work at all, but it would make me happy, and people would watch.

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 3:51 pm
hahaha, me too, this is crazy

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:51 pm
This is better than election coverage.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 3:51 pm
Diogo: read the 3:44 pm post. seriously, watch.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:51 pm
Diogo: Iverson actually ASKED to be moved to a contendor. No need to feel bad for him.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:51 pm
TAD: As all-stars, they should be able to adapt their games, so you’re right in that sense. My question: is it worth it to have Rip or Ivy alter and possibly hurt their games to work together, or would it be better to trade out Rip?

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 3:52 pm
The pistons are going to be hurt on defense, luckily there is only 1 pg to worry about in the east and he is consistently injured

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 3:53 pm
Double You-J: On behalf of all Pistons fans, I’d blow my f*cking brains out if that happened.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 3:53 pm
We’re going to see an entirely different team in Detroit, so I’m not sure Iverson is going to screw up the offense up there. They have a new coach, and a new team. Don’t expect this team to resemble that of last year. Expect better. :-)

  • Eboy Posted: Nov.3 at 3:54 pm
    Ryne get’s it.

  • [...] But it does in fact look like it’s done, and as DBB pointed out, there are people not happy about it. One of those might not be Allen Iverson (and apparently not Chauncey Billups either) who will quickly become beloved in Motown as the Pistons, according to Ryne Nelson at SLAM Online, make a last run (for a while) at a championship. [...]

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 3:55 pm
Ryne: expect better, prepare for worse?

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 3:55 pm
If Joe Dumars thinks this is gonna work so do I. Don’t forget to vote everybody!

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:55 pm
Well, I would be in favor of moving Rip, but who exactly would “fit” with Iverson? Everytime a scenario comes up, i’ve seen rebuttals saying Iverson cannot work with that player or that system. I’ve also seen a ton of comments saying Iverson would be a good addition with the Pistons, a team that thrives on being unselfish. So which is it? Experimenting with a future HOF is a gamble i’ll sign on to.

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 3:56 pm
so when will this take place? Billups and Dyess still playing tonight or no?

  • Double You-J Posted: Nov.3 at 3:57 pm

this is better than work, thats for sure! (NBK, work is where you go to earn money when you are not living in your mom’s basement flexing your NBA knowledge.) and for the love of god, man, its spelled grammAr. this is a written medium, you know…

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 3:58 pm
Billups and Dyess are still playing tonight according to the Detroit News.

  • WhaHuh Posted: Nov.3 at 4:00 pm
Why has no one mentioned that Iverson came off an injury, and it looks like he is still playin with it?

  • Z Posted: Nov.3 at 4:00 pm
If this move was done for cap reasons (Bron or Bosh in 2010) then I’m all for it. I remember an interview with AI when he got traded to Denver. He was saying something about just trying to fit in and it was Melo’s team and he wasn’t looking to come there and take all the shots.. We saw how that turned out. AI is AI and he’s not going to change now. He’ll dominate the ball in Detroit like he has always done. Iverson DOES NOT fit in. Ever. When he went to the Finals, it was on his terms with a team built for him. I just can’t see how that’s gonna work for Detroit. An EXCELLENT move for Denver though. Melo can claim his team back. JR can blossom without looking over his shoulder for the quick hook. Carter can resume his back-up duties. Great deal for Denver.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:01 pm
i say Rip comes off the Bench and Iverson is either on the court with Stuckey while playing the 2 guard or with Rip playing the 1. Either situation ends well.

  • Double You-J Posted: Nov.3 at 4:02 pm
@JE: I guess you’re right, but with Steph, AI, and Sheed it’d be like the “All-SLAM” Team.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:02 pm
also, i am guessing this move will mean either Chucky Akens or Anthony Carter are either getting cut or getting a lot of DNP-Coach Dessions.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 4:02 pm
    Myles
I still think Iverson is better than Arenas and Baron Davis.
    Everybody else
If the Pistons let Tayshaun handle a lot of the duties on the one, that’s a good thing for Rip and Iverson. Both of them can free lance on the wings and Rip can continue using his curls. Detroit’s ball movement improved under Flip, but before him and during crunch time they ran a lot of isos so it’s not like Iverson is disrupting the chemistry of the Suns or something.
The way this works is if Iverson commits on defense. That’s the big key. If he commits like he commited on defense in Philly he can be an average defender and an excellent ball hawk. That’s all the Pistons need from him. All the Pistons need is for one of Boston’s stars to slip this year and for Lebron’s teammates to keep failing.
If that happens, the Pistons make the Finals.
I’m hopeful about this arrangement. Not ecstatic or anything, but hopeful.
Why didn’t anybody talk about what this means for Melo? Should it be put up or shut up time for him?

  • Crook Posted: Nov.3 at 4:04 pm
This could potentially be good for both teams or blow up in both teams’ faces. We all know the upsides to both sides. Now for the ? on Denvers side: They don’t call Billups Mr. Big Shot for nothing and since he takes big shots where does that leave Melo at the end of the game? Does Billups smoke weed? The ? for The Pistons side: AI & Stuckey: AI is AI nuff said but Stuckey looks like he may be on his way up so does this stunt him? Does having his # taken away mess with his mind/confidence?
It really doesn’t matter for either team since neither can get past the elite. Do you see the Nugs beating the Hornets, Spurs or Lakers or the Pistons beating the Celtics in their respective playoffs?
I like this deal IF it happens

  • Chris Posted: Nov.3 at 4:06 pm
Who’s going to run the offense?

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 4:07 pm
    Z
I don’t think Iverson was the problem in Denver. That whole team had issues.
Sure, Iverson dominated the ball, but it wasn’t like George Karl was asking them to run a motion offense. He only ran isos for Iverson and Melo, plus a few pick and rolls. Melo got his numbers with Iverson, he was less efficient becuase he decided that rebounding and passing were optional along with defense.
Melo is a very good scorer, and he hasn’t shown a willingness to do much else. At least Iverson has proven over the course of his career that he can sacrifice and adapt. It’s time for Melo to get his mind right.

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 4:07 pm
this trade makes no sense for detroit. what are they gonna do wit rip now? and is stephen jackson gonna get traded for tayshaun?

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:07 pm
Crook: the nuggets weren’t going to do sh*t as they were anyway, so there’s really no possible way for this to “blow up in their face.”

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 4:08 pm
but this does mean carmelo and jr will be averaging career highs. and what about tinsley?

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 4:08 pm
Stephen Jackson for Richard Hamilton maybe?

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 4:10 pm
The more I think about this move the more I like it. Lakers vs. Pistons 2009 NBA Finals has a nice ring to it. 8)

  • Yassi Posted: Nov.3 at 4:10 pm
I love AI and I love Detroit. Both very very much so. But that……….is a…….very bad idea!!!!

  • Joe Posted: Nov.3 at 4:10 pm
As a pistons fan, I honestly don’t know what to expect. My thoughts on this are up on my blog. Very interesting move on the pistons part.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 4:10 pm
@Jukai: A S-Jax, A.I. and Rasheed Wallace team would be certified gangsta.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:11 pm
A leauge domainated by the Celtics, Lakers, and Pistons has happened before and it appears to have occured agian

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:11 pm
Why does everyone want to trade Rip?? Even with Iverson in place of Chauncey, the Pistons still have a relatively solid core that have been together for a while. If you get rid of Rip, Sheed, or Tayshaun, it’s going to f*ck everything up. Yes, this is a risk, but I think it’s a good one, and will ultimately proove to be a great one. Pistons in ’09.

  • Yassi Posted: Nov.3 at 4:11 pm
@B. Long: that isnt going to happen as Detroit has no one to bring the ball across midfield, let alone organize a decent offense. Must wake up, must wake up quick!

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:11 pm
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 4:12 pm

Joe the Plumber does not approve of this

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 4:12 pm
B-Long: Which would make it even better when they go against the Lakers in the finals. The Detroit hard nosed gangstas vs the hollywood glamor. Jeez, whether this works or not, it sure made the NBA interesting.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 4:13 pm
    Crook
The Pistons can’t beat the Celtics from last year, but they don’t have to. They have to beat this year’s Celtics team.
Unfortunately, it looks like the early evidence that KG was going to be a more effective inside scorer may have been a preseason mirage. If that’s true, without Posey, the Celtics can be beaten. As long as Powe doesn’t make too big of a leap this year, the Pistons can compete with the Celtics.
And Billups took a lot of long jumpers for Detroit. By adding Iverson, the Pistons now have two very good slashers in Iverson and Stuckey.

  • Joe Posted: Nov.3 at 4:13 pm
Also, why would it be so unlikely Iverson returning after this season? If he wants a championship so bad (assuming he doesn’t win one this year) he’d return to Detroit for less money, unless there’s any other contender with cap-room come the off-season (none I’m aware of)

  • Echead Posted: Nov.3 at 4:13 pm
And I agree about not taking out prince, rip or sheed

  • Yassi Posted: Nov.3 at 4:13 pm
why has the post of B. Long all the sudden been changed??? And mine doesnt make any sense any more but I can not change it…….

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 4:14 pm
JE: So you’ve never seen Rip play?
I WONT REPEAT WHY I DO NOT THINK THEY WILL BE GOOD TOGETHER. READ MY POST A BIT ABOVE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY. Of course, they can both change their games up for each other, they’re incredibly high level NBA all-stars. I think it may be better for both Rip and the Detroit Pistons if they don’t make them change up their games and just make a trade.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 4:14 pm
I wish the Pistons would trade Rip for Stephen Jackson. Now that is somebody who can play with Iverson. If he can play with Baron Davis, he can play with Iverson.

  • Crook Posted: Nov.3 at 4:16 pm
So true JE so true but I didn’t want to come off onesided. lol. Denvers management is shaky at best. If this deal goes through I see a dual SLAM cover next issue. LMAO. ROLLTIDE!

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:18 pm
Cheik Salmb is the X-Factor in this trade. (Not really but nobody is talking about him).

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:19 pm
I think trading Rip for a young, good Power Forward might be the best idea, but the Pistons could just try and sign Bosh over the summer. That would be a gamble worth taking.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:20 pm
Juaki, calling the Pistons the “hard nosed gangstas” disturbs me on many levels.

  • Celts17 Posted: Nov.3 at 4:21 pm
@BETCATS 281st! If Rodney Stuckey can be a true PG, this could be just the change Detroit needs. They still won’t be able to beat the Celtics though.

  • Paps Posted: Nov.3 at 4:22 pm
Good. AI belongs in the East.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 4:22 pm
    you got 282 Celts17.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:23 pm
Jukai: I’ve seen Rip play lots of times, actually. It isn’t like the moment AI puts a pistons jersey on Michael Curry is just going to set his playbook on fire. Iverson can do everything Chauncey was able to do, as good or better, and more. The fact that he’ll be able to score better 1 on 1 than Chauncey isn’t a bad thing; sometimes it will be necessary. Considering this is a one year experiment (maybe two), I can’t imagine that it would be better for Rip to go somewhere else with no chance of another title, or for the Pistons to screw up the chemistry that they have currently sustained.

  • Crook Posted: Nov.3 at 4:24 pm
The last I checked a Gangsta team hasn’t won a chip yet, the closest was “The Bad Boys” back in the day but these Pistons are a total bad boy team. All Gangsta gets you are more sneaker sales from a bunch of followers. As far as KG, we’re only a few games in and people are making judgments..i guess that means the cavs will not finish over .500 then. Ridiculous simply Ridiculous.

Chauncey is better at shooting the three and running the team. Two things he does better than Iverson. Plus defending.

  • Kid Presto Posted: Nov.3 at 4:31 pm

Smart move for both teams…so easy to see that i won’t even bother anylizing….ok,i’ll do it for the kids…..Nuggets get a better playmaker-distributor and a better defender. At the same time they have made all revenue from A.I. t’shirts to kids. They had 3 years to see what “the answer”(ha,ha,ha!!!!) could do for them: he did what anybody with a basic bball knowledge was sure he will do(nothing). They also get a local hero…Same for Pistons: they weren’t getting any better with Billups..now they save money, may trade “the answer”(ha,ha,ha!!!!) to get some picks, they give time to their promising young point and they cash some A.I. memorabilia from the kids in Detroit…. Everybody is happy, great move for both teams(for the future)…

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:37 pm
Allenp: there have been two years in allen iverson’s career that he has averaged less than 2 steals per game (1.9 in ’05-’06, and 1.8 when he got to denver in ’06-’07). Chauncey was able to average 1.5 steals per game ONE TIME in his career — his rookie year. As for threes, AI can still hit them, and Rip and Tay will be hitting more of them now that Chauncey is gone (assist to Ivy). As for running the team better, perhaps we should wait until Iverson completes his physical before we start to argue about that.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:39 pm
agreed, BET, especially 3 games into the season.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 4:40 pm
JE don’t worry about stats iverson spends his time gaurding his man hanging out in the passing lanes. It doesn’t mean iverson’s a better defender it means he gambles and gets burnt more often then his d pays off.

  • horsey Posted: Nov.3 at 4:42 pm
samb is so unimportant he doesn’t even have career highs on his nba player profile page. 1.8 a game is better than 1.7 i guess…

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 4:42 pm
im the one who mentioned s-jax to detroit!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 4:42 pm
Hey Kid Presto, McDyess will never ever wear a nuggets jersey again

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 4:43 pm
& Setphen Jackson is not getting traded anywhere, he is about to sign an extension

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:44 pm
nbk: like i told Jukai, it isn’t like Curry is going to throw out his playbook. There will be set defenses, as well. If the statistical differences weren’t so significant, I wouldn’t use them. The point is, Ivy can play some D, and he’s definitely going to in Detroit.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 4:44 pm
    all i gotta say is…
me picking JR smith in the last round of fantasy ball now looks prophetic. a robbery, even.
seriously though, this is a terrific trade for denver. melo is without a doubt their best player now. billups then address nuggets’ biggest deficiencies at leadership/point guard play/defense/long range shooting. JR can now be inserted as the starting 2 and do his thing. if furious george can hold the team accountable, this is a playoff team. who can/will they knock off? that i have no idea.
as for detroit, it’s not as much as a sure shot, BUT i see the detroit team as a (way) more talented version of that AI sixers team that went to the Finals – they are built on defense and unselfishness. so if the current pistons are indeed selfless, why would it matter if they are taking less shots? AI will be loved by the city of detroit, and this new surrounding cast fits AI’s style of play and attitude a lot better than the nuggets counterpart.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 4:45 pm
oh and SLAM, daylight savings started yesterday. fix the clock for the posting times. ;)

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.3 at 4:47 pm
Despite reading all of the claims that Mac will be bought out, one of Denver’s thirteen GMs, Rex Chapman just released a statement saying they were planning on keep him under contract. In my opinion, their thin frontcourt mandates his services. Buying him out could save them some big $ under the tax threshold, but they would still have to go get another forward, and this deal still saves them like 3 million.
I have a big manifesto to be posted tomorrow.
    Damn this “other” full-time job!

  • Juscheckin Posted: Nov.3 at 4:47 pm
Thank you “AllenP”! Im wondering why noone is talking about what this means for Camelo. I dont care what no one says..I dont like the way the Nuggets handeled the Iverson situation. It seems like they wasted AI’s time. They traded for Iverson knowing good and well they were not ready to contend. They have tried just about every type of team with Melo. Billups is a slightly better version of Andre Miller and if this doesn’t work then the Nuggets will have to face a strong possibility of tradig Carmelo and starting over. Carmelo seems like a cool dude off the court, but on the court his ego is bigger then his game and he plays the game with no heart. The person I feel sorry for is Billups. Although he is from Denver, he went from a for-sure playoff contender to a pretender. I think the Nuggets go out in the first round again, only this time they might win 2 games instead of 1. People haven’t given Iverson enough credit, if it wasn’t for Iverson last season the Nuggets wouldn’t even have made the playoffs..watching that team, I verson won them at least 10 games or so off of his clutch shots alone. Im glad he gets a legit shot at a title run and Melo can have his team back where he can shoot the ball 50 times a game.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 4:51 pm
That has nothing to do with whether or not McDyess wants to be in Denver

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 4:51 pm
zach randolph for rasheed wallace. then this team will be a true contender again and it helps the knicks’ future.

  • Juscheckin Posted: Nov.3 at 4:52 pm
Oh yeah and AI gets to play for a live crowd again, no offense but the Nuggets crowds are dead on arrival.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 4:54 pm
Witness if you think Randolph is better than Sheed than you are the most unreliable witness of all time, and to JE when your a PG in the NBA your statistics on defense mean almost nothing, if you can’t stop your guy then stealing the ball one time a game means nothing.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Nov.3 at 4:57 pm
but everything to do with him actually BEING in Denver.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 4:57 pm
    JE
As soon as I saw you using steals to talk about defense I knew this wasn’t going to be fruitful. Anybody with a basic knowledge of the NBA knows Chauncey is a better defender than Iverson. All you have to do is watch games. He also shoots the three better and is a better defender.
By listing those three things I proved you wrong. Just admit it and move on with life.

  • Kostas Koufos Posted: Nov.3 at 4:57 pm
@JE and all the videogame kids…..:Joe Dumars had 1.1 steals and 0.2 blocks in his best year in the respective categories…propably he wasn’t as good a defender as our cute “answer”…once again: W-A-K-E U-P!!!!

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 4:58 pm
no NBK. i was saying that since rasheed obviously gave up on his career its time to move him for somebody who might just commit to defense and score points if he knows he contending.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 5:00 pm
In fairness to AI, I think a lot of you guys underrate his defense. He doesn’t get schooled by everyone on offense, he just isn’t an elite defender. He’s average to above average in his defense of the point guard spot. When he has to lock down his man, he does a respectable job. He’s simply very quick and has good eyes, so he’s more EFFECTIVE playing the passing lanes.
Witness: has Zach Randolph STARTED his career?

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 5:03 pm
NBK, first off I want to thank you for pointing out how stupid the comment above you was, so I don’t have to. Secondly, you’re still missing my point, which is simply that AI can play a set defense on a defensive team, and he can do it better than Chauncey. Maybe the stats would be insignificant if they weren’t at their highest when Ivy was playing for Larry Brown’s defensive sixer teams. Yeah, he was definitely more of a gambler playing for the 200 point-a-game or bust Nuggets last year, but what would be the point in slowing down on defense when you’re in a system like that? He can play real defense, and he will.

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 5:03 pm
zach randolph isnt that bad. im sure an mvp, gold medalist and a man in a mask will inspire him. unless he hangs out with kwame brown most of the time.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:03 pm
so your trying to say zach randolph plays d?

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 5:05 pm
JE: so you’re saying that Allen Iverson is only an average defensive player because he was never on a team that played any defense and that when he comes onto the Pistons, once he starts playing the way the team plays, he will be able to play just as good if not better defense than Chauncy, and you have no evidence to back this up?
    Nice.

  • Kostas Koufos Posted: Nov.3 at 5:05 pm
    IVERSON!!!!IVERSON!!!IVERSON!!!!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:05 pm
AI makes their defense worse than it was with Chauncey end of story

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 5:06 pm
no but his offense and rebounding will make up for it. which is something detroit obvioulsy needs both of.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:06 pm
Joe Dumars will not touch Zach Randolph with a 10-foot pole. Mark my words.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 5:06 pm
    Jukai
JE foolishly said Iverson does everything equal or better than Chauncey. That’s obviously not the case. You know I’m an Iverson fan, but an honest fan can admit that good and bad of any deal.
The Nuggets finally to a real, starting quality point guard and serious playing time for J.R. Smith and Linal Kleiza. If Melo plays up to his potential he should get out of the first round. I just wonder if Melo will do his thing.
Detroit got a bonafide scorer who still has enough in the tank to drop 40 on anybody. They now have to rebuild their rotation and decide how they want to use Iverson. I like TAD’s idea to have Tayshaun run the team. He’s a good passer and he was being underutilized by Flip who basically made him run godawful isos when he wasn’t standing on the perimeter. I think Tayshaun should flourish as a decision maker. The question is how much will this hurt Detroit defensively? And will their remaining bigs be enough? We shall see.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:06 pm
Also JE iverson was on the best defensive team in the league when they went to the finals, they had a great defensive scheme but iverson still couldn’t gaurd anyone

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:08 pm

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 5:10 pm
joe dumars is an evil genius who secretly plots wth isiah thomas, who reamins his partner in crime. and oh yeah who would have thought joe d would have traded for ai. im sure he would gamble on z-bo.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:10 pm
and too witness i don’t think they need offense they just got Allen Iverson, and secondly i would rather have sheed gaurding KG then Zach Randolph trying to score on him. You should maybe focus on IDK the NFL or crimes seeing as how your a witness

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:11 pm
And secondly i called iverson to detroit about a month ago and got in a really heated argument with a few people.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 5:11 pm
if Rasheed is interested, he can be the defensive coordinator on the floor for pistons, pretty much the same way KG is for the celts.

NEXT SLAM COVER: A.I and SHEED WHEN KEEPING IT REAL GOES RIGHT!!!

  • peteb80 Posted: Nov.3 at 5:13 pm
I want to see Billups post up AI ten times in a row when the Pistons play the Nuggets the next time.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 5:13 pm
Jukai, and I guess allenp: Yes, I have no evidence to back it up. Other than the fact that he played with Larry Brown for years and he (along with the rest of the team) was pretty damn good defensively. A little more credible than Allenp’s original statement that Billups runs the Pistons better than AI, isn’t it?

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:14 pm
Allenp: The “Tayshuan handling some of the PG duties” thing was n’t thought up by me. Flip had been using Tay periodically to bring the ball up and initiate the offense. Curry is just planning on doing it much more. What you are looking at is a lot of interchangeable parts. AI, Stuck, and Tay can all bring the ball up and initiate offense, but all 3 can also play off the ball or create shots for themselves. Rip and Afflalo play well off-the-ball and Hermann/Maxiell/Amir can play the 3/4 with Amir/Sheed/Kwame playing the 4/5. Multiple roles for players will be a sure thing.

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 5:15 pm

No because AI did not play D for Larry Brown he just gambled in the passing lanes like he does now

  • adams Posted: Nov.3 at 5:16 pm
Hey NBK, why don’t you stop cutting and pasting your “opinions” from other people’s articles? That’s weak.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 5:16 pm
NBK, I’ve mentioned that team twice now, and where you get that AI couldn’t guard anyone then is beyond me. I may disagree with Jukai and Allenp, but at least they aren’t talking out of their asses.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:16 pm
NBK/Witness: In case you are not aware, Dumars actually dealt for AI years ago when he was still in Philly, but Matt Geiger nixed the trade. Joe has always liked Iverson and it doesn’t surprise me in the least that he dealt for him. What surprised me was the timing of it all.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 5:18 pm
JE: NBK is outrageously exaggerating. That being said, Iverson’s 2001 squad was very similar to Lebron’s 2006 squad = one insanely offensively talented star with average defensive capabilities and the entire rest of the team made of lockdown defenders.

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 5:18 pm
i was very aware of that. and p.s. im obviously waiting to be a witness in new york.

  • witness Posted: Nov.3 at 5:19 pm
but lebron was much younger with limited offensive skills and limited expierence.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:19 pm
what are you talkin about adams? thanks tad i knew about that though? And JE i am not pulling that out of my ass it is how iverson has played D his whole career…you think he was good at d cuz he shut down derek fisher or somethin? There is no grounds anywhere to say iverson is good at defense

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 5:19 pm
    JE
Your logic is that if you play for a good defensive team you are a good defender?
    Steve Kerr
    John Paxon
    Matt Bonner
    Matt Geiger
    Lebron James
    Eddie House
All of these players play or played on elite defensive teams. None of them were good individual defenders. There is no merit in an argument that playing on a good defensive team makes you a good defender. None.
Like I said a long time ago, the best Detroit can hope for is that Iverson be an average overall defender and remain great in the passing lanes.
Iverson hates dealing with contact on screens, he tends to lose his man in the halfcourt and regularly gives up in the post. Billups did none of these things. Iverson can do some things well on defense, but he’s not in the same league as Billups.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:22 pm
    thank you allenp

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:22 pm
Putting an average defender on a good defensive team just masks the average defenders liabilities. Now, a team that emphasizes D can get more out of that average defender, but it won’t necessarily make him a good defender.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:22 pm
hey adams im still waiting to hear what your talking about? i did that to prove McDyess is not supposed to end up in denver but thats it

  • what Posted: Nov.3 at 5:24 pm
Great trade for Detroit, not quite as great for Denver.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 5:25 pm
Oh. My. God. Oh my god. Oh my god.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:27 pm
I don’t see how this trade does not help denver more than detroit, denver gains defense, a pg, and passive leadership (meaning billups knows it melos team; melo can develope into more of a leader) player skill wise Detroit obviously wins but overall team effect i think denver took the lead in this trade

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 5:27 pm
Now Denver has a great defensive point guard, and no D anywhere else.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 5:27 pm
    I’m still getting over this shock . . . !

  • mike Posted: Nov.3 at 5:29 pm
what – how is that not good for Denver – they get a true point guard from Colorado – a good backup in McDyess – and JR smith can start and kleiza will get more time – great trade

  • Drew Posted: Nov.3 at 5:29 pm
Cub: If you count the effect of the luxury tax, this deal saved the Nuggets $6 million. Can’t wait to see your analysis. As a Nuggets fan, I think this helps this year. The downside is that they don’t have a big chunk of money freed up after this season. Plus, I will miss watching AI play. Still, I like it.

  • Kostas Koufos Posted: Nov.3 at 5:30 pm
    @Moose….:IVERSON!!!!IVERSON!!!IVERSON!!!!

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 5:31 pm
i don’t know why anyone think the nuggets should buy Dyess out. i thought nuggets have a very weak front court rotation. Nene is their only low post presence, (which is better than the bulls and warriors, but that’s not saying much).

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 5:31 pm
Denver improves immediately. They also lose a lot of flexibility going forward. Chauncey just signed a big new deal, Melo is locked up long term, Nene is long term and so is Kenyon. They also just resigned JR, and they better hope he doesn’t blow up too much becuase I could see him turning into a disgruntled player because of money. Basically, the Nuggets better like the team they currently have because that’s the team they are going to be stuck with for a while.
So, in the short term, Denver wins, but I think Detroit could win in the long term.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:32 pm
Drew i think the nuggets are just waiting for kenyon’s contract to be up that’ll be during the big free agent summer i think billups is up that year too

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 5:32 pm
@ Kostas: ok . . . huh? Oh, again, everybody read my new stuff on hibachi 2.0. I’m saying it for the last time right now. Comment! Comment!

‘if Rasheed is interested, he can be the defensive coordinator on the floor for pistons, pretty much the same way KG is for the celts.’ (albie, 5,11p)
I’m really tired of those kind of comments about Sheed. He is who he is at this point in his career. It’s not about interest, it’s about skills. Sheed wasnt/isnt/wont be as good as KG and TD. He plays the game in a lackadaisical dont-give-a-f— way that makes you THINK he can play better. Sheed has always underperformed on the boards and is not a go-to low post scorer. His 1vs1 D is top notch but he can’t control the paint. It’s not in his DNA.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 5:33 pm
Jukai: aside from Mutumbo, I don’t recall anyone on that sixers team that was better than an average defender. AI, on the other hand, was an absolute pest on defense in the Finals against LA.
Allenp: Not my logic at all, but my logic is that a sound defensive player like AI is far more likely to play great defense on a great defensive team. Aside from Lebron on that list, come the f*ck on. Those guys were only on those teams for the purpose of knocking down perimeter shots when need be. As for lebron, I would hope that his D shows vast signs of improvement in the years to come. My point: those guys are piss-poor defensive players, and AI is not. He is a very capable defensive player, just reckless when he has been on reckless teams. Won’t be the case with the Pistons.

  • Kostas Koufos Posted: Nov.3 at 5:34 pm
by the way….A.I is about to overtake “top-50:Arenas” for most post-ups in this month (Kobe’s 900 of 1070 were not bball related, the whole thing was basically a joke..). I say that Joe Dumars knows at least the principles of marketing…smart guy.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 5:35 pm
@Allen: I’m pretty sure Flip and Iverson would have been a disaster (albeit sometimes very fun to watch disaster) if they were out there together.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 5:35 pm
good analysis on nuggets, allenp. i think that’s still a very solid team for years to come though. nuggets’ biggest problems have always been point guard play/consistent outside shooting/leadership and that’s all billups is known for. now they just need to strengthen up the bench for a (long) shot at WCF.

  • JE Posted: Nov.3 at 5:36 pm
Just to be noted, since I’ve been all about Detroit this whole time, this is also great for Denver. I honestly feel like both teams got what they needed here.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:37 pm
These comments are all over the f*cking place. Yeesh.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 5:37 pm
@Z: I’m with you. Sheed’s still a great player and a very valuable asset to the Pistons. He boards, blocks, posts, shoots. There really isn’t a player with that sort of skill set.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:40 pm
    2 things:
LeBron James is not a bad defender
Iverson is not even “sound” as JE calls it, seriously he hasn’t gaurded a star player in like 3 years. He gets absolutely smoked for the short period of time he has to gaurd top notch PG’s. What detroit allows that denver didn’t is backup around the basket to help iverson after he cheats off his guy or gambles for steals, now amir, sheed, and maxiell can swat away shots instead of nene and kenyon fouling whoever gets in the key

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Nov.3 at 5:43 pm
@TAD: Very true. It’s partially my fault as well. All I know is Allen Iverson back in the East, playing alongside Wade and Bron in the annual classic. It just feels natural.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:43 pm
Since i’m pro-Detroit, I also haven’t commented on Denvers side of the deal: Basically, Denver made out very good basketball-wise. Financially, as Allenp pointed out, they just added another long-term contract to their books. Billups is everything Iverson wasn’t in Denver: a steady hand, floor general, defensive presence, consistent, head strong, and can knock down the 3 and hit 90% of his freethrows. McDyess, if they keep him, is a good lockerroom guy, a veteran presence, reliable, can knock down the 18-foot J, rebound, and play solid D. He also doesn’t mind coming off the bench.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:44 pm
    @Tad-He would in denver

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:44 pm
Ryne: Sorry, not really complaining, just trying to keep up.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:45 pm
NBK- What, per se, were you referring to?

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:47 pm
McDyess coming off the bench, i think he will refuse to come over but still

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 5:47 pm
On a completely different note, when is SLAM gonna change it’s comment times to match daylight savings?

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 5:48 pm
actually Z, desire can affect performance/consistency greatly. Tim Duncan once said that the two players who gave him the toughest time are KG and Rasheed. At times, Sheed is a monster to deal with on both side of the court, but you are right, most of the time he’s in the “don’t give a fcuk” mode so his true ability doesn’t shine through. i mean are you saying with he doesn’t posess the nimble footwork, good touch in the post, and acute basketball sense that CAN in fact make him a great defender? he is in no way in the same league as KG and TD performance-wise, but talent/potential wise he’s on par.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:48 pm
On a completely different note, why does that matter

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:48 pm
Yeah, Dyess would come off the bench, but he is more than capable as a starter as well.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:49 pm
Sheed is as good as he wants to be, it will just be how good does he want to be with AI

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:51 pm
you think he would be willing to come off the bench for a team that *MIGHT* make the playoffs? I think they will if odens gina keeps acting up but i dont think McDyess is going to want to spend the end of his career coming off the bench not competing for a title

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 5:51 pm
Anyway, between AI coming to Detroit, the election tomorrow (PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE PEOPLE), and news that my company is laying off people, this has been one rollercoaster day.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 5:52 pm
it’s getting to you too huh TAD? that was last week for me (minus the trade, of course).

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:52 pm
mine is too company i mean stressful time in america

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 5:53 pm
yet we are all still on this board talking about AI and stuff instead of putting in “productive work”…

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 5:55 pm
To add to TAD’s above comment: if you don’t know, go with Obama. Barack the vote, y’all!

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 5:55 pm
thats because all the productive work left when bush took office

  • Kostas Koufos Posted: Nov.3 at 6:01 pm
it is 100$ for a month…but i told you that i can give something more for you…

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 6:01 pm
    why would you say that?
did you know a comedian called Sarah Palin impersonating the leader of France and she actually believed him? If McCain wins the election and then dies, i will move to romania that day because that women can’t lead a family let alone a country

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 6:01 pm
I agree, TAD. Maybe I’ll move to Toronto. I’ll have no money, but at least there’s the NBA! Oh yeah, did YOU read my Leon Powe thing? If not, click my name, read and comment!

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.3 at 6:02 pm
@TAD: you and Eboy with your fancy multi-tasking. I wish i’m as talented.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 6:03 pm
NBK, that is one of the reasons why I’m supporting Obama. But I ain’t just going against Mccain and Palin, Obama is a great man that could be one of the best presidents ever.

  • Kostas Koufos Posted: Nov.3 at 6:04 pm
@TADOne….:he cannot lose it and this is something arranged by the begging….the choice of mcCain was something according to the plan….don’t worry,at all (ok,you should worry but this ain’t the place…)let’s get back to our lovely “Answer”!!!

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 6:04 pm
But I can’t vote, that sucks nut$. That’s why I’m telling you guys to vote Obama!

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 6:05 pm
Moose: Toronto is my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd option, trust me. Everyone have a good day/evening. I’m off to update my resume and watch Chauncey’s last game as a Piston.

  • NBK Posted: Nov.3 at 6:06 pm
    NBK for president 2024

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 6:07 pm
And I’d go with you, TAD. Best of luck to your Detroit guys until Sunday nite.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 6:37 pm
    Ryne
I meant Flip Saunders. I would have liked to have seen what Flip Saunders could do with designing an offense with Iverson in mind. Flip, except for his curious use of Tayshaun, is very good at offense.

hmmm..this is just an april fools prank surely….(in november…)??

  • what Posted: Nov.3 at 6:57 pm
The Nuggets are gonna waive McDyess. So basically they traded a guard whose contract expires this year for a not quite as good guard who is signed until 2011. Say what you want about AI but I find it hard to see how a running team that plays no defense improves by trading AI for Billups. It’s not like Billups’ better defensive abilities are gonna really matter on a team that has no inside presence whatsoever, and he’s obviously a clear downgrade offensively.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.3 at 6:59 pm
Denver got the short end of the stick fo sho.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.3 at 7:12 pm
If McDyess goes back to the Pistons, I can tell you who is getting the better deal…

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.3 at 7:15 pm
Both teams benefitted. Why does everyone look for a winner and loser in a trade?

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.3 at 7:16 pm
Why are they getting rid of McDyess?
If it’s just for the money, they should have just kept Iverson. Denver appears to be stupid.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 7:16 pm
i just dont think the Nuggets are gonna pay Mcdysse all his money, so he wont just walk away from it.

    that was a shocking one…
can be very interesting BUT, a gamble, huuuge gamble, for both sides.
Melo can get way better with Chauncey, or he will just prove he doesn’t have the heart…
Iverson is a fan-favorite anywhere he goes, BUT, can he shake this team up???
doubtfull. i don’t see him blending in and putting him with Sheed can get crazy…. crazy good or crazy bad…
at least, shakes the league a little bit.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.3 at 7:50 pm

anyway, thanks god, i don’t live in US and i don’t have to choose between obama and mccain.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.3 at 8:44 pm
OK, this is the very last time I’m saying it. Check Hibachi 2.0, read my article, comment! Thanks . . . especially you, Hursty :) .

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.3 at 8:44 pm
This is actually a good deal for both sides. The Nuggets actually get a pure point guard who will allow Anthony to be the number 1 scoring option. Keep in mind that Billups kicks @ss. On the other hand, Detroit also has a great playmaker in Iverson, while also having him as the go-to clutch scorer down the stretch as well. Detroit will love this guy, as the Pistons have had a history with small legends (Isiah Thomas). Yeah, not a bad trade at all for both sides.

  • Bruno Posted: Nov.3 at 8:44 pm
jersey king… have them both, but billups as a piston and iverson…. well, iverson i have as a sixer, as a nugget and as a team usa member…
    hehehe
NOT GETTING HIS NEW PISTON UNIT FOR SURE!

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.3 at 8:51 pm
Both teams get better. I like it.

  • Anton Posted: Nov.3 at 10:08 pm
also, who says AI woun’t be back next season?

  • Anton Posted: Nov.3 at 10:11 pm
Iverson wasn’t at the shoot-around this morning not because of the trade but cause we talkin ’bout…

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.3 at 11:24 pm
Hmm, mixed feelings about this. He belongs in the hard nosed eastern conference, but betting the crown jewels on Rodney this early might be a bit too optimistic. Ah well, Joe D IS one of the smarter Managers out there so, here we go. The Answer is on a team surrounded by serious TALENT and guys who’ve seen it all. Fan-tas-tic. Although i dislike the Pistons in general (especially during the Flip era), i’m gonna keep tabs on Le Answer’s team now.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.3 at 11:26 pm
And if Dyess pulls a hissy fit, he might be back in Detroit in a few days/weeks, after Denver waves him, so more good knews for that already SICK frontcourt of the pistons

This is awesome, can’t wait to see Chauncey, although I will miss AI. JR and Melo and Billups…oh my. Thank god I get paid Friday…need to pick up an AI Pistons jersey and a Billups Nuggets jersey. Glad the Nuggets season ust got interesting. Hope AI gets a ring.

    Rip
    Lebroskie
    Bosh
Maxiell And then play the 2007 boston role and pick up every veteran who wants a shot at a ring.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.4 at 6:22 pm
Stuckey knows the rule is that the veteran player has to spend some money to get the number. He’sjust negotiating

  • If I could vote for this Posted: Nov.4 at 7:30 pm
    Iverson jersey number 1
Means the Piston wom t retire Billups jersey.
Same shame for the Big Ben jersey.
Those 2 numbers should join Thomas, Dumas and co up there.
Like when Doug Chritie wore a Dallas number 13 jersey. Nash jersey should be retired also in Dallas. Jersey needed to be retired : Glen Rice, Hornets
    Tim Hardaway, Heat
    Penny, Orlando
    Rodman, Bulls
    Richemond, Kings
    Divac – Webber, Kings
    Starks, Knicks
    Mark Jackson, Pacers
    Sabonis, Blazers
    and few mores…

  • tealish Posted: Nov.4 at 8:16 pm
No, you do not say “we’ll have to talk about it” when you’re wearing a HOFer’s #. You should be ripping your name off your jersey and sewing in I V E R S O N in its place immediately after you heard of his arrival.
