Sam Cassell Calls for Stephon Marbury’s Freedom

“They should let him go,” Cassell said. “They always tell us to be professional. Be professional about it. Let the man go. Why not? I’ve know Steph for years. I said a long time ago he was special. That he’s still going through all this, it’s crazy. Let him go.”

In fairness, the fact that Steph wont negotiate down his contract is sort of hurting this process

    • Allenp Posted: Nov.19 at 11:10 am
      Pay me my money!
He should just sit and chill. Get some rest, prepare for next year. This year is not going to change people’s perception of him anyway.

Free Marbury for real. He is owed 22, he wants 19. They are paying Jerome James all of his money…

    • mat smith Posted: Nov.19 at 11:18 am
Let the man go! to Europe or Asia or somewhere.

    • aposton5 Posted: Nov.19 at 11:19 am
I agree with him (Marbury), I would want my money too. I mean at the end of it all that what the basketball busines is about.

i would just chill and collect my money and prepare for next season

Steph’s screwed. He’s being stubborn about every penny in his contract and he’s paying the price, literally. The longer he sits, the sillier he looks, the less he gets paid to sign a NEW contract next year. If he sits and rests this year then last year’s performance is what he is using to negotiate his new money. Last year wasn’t a good look for him. Dude needs to hire himself an agent, accept less money, resign for the minimum with a team willing to give him minutes and work on putting together an excellent rest-of-the-season. Forget NY, forget the Knicks, forget the $22mil. If he can salvage this season, he might salvage his NBA career. God knows the last 4 years have been a waste.

BARF, Steph is not sitting voluntarily. The coach is refusing to play him. And the fact that hes signed a contract means his entitled to the money that is owed to him.

    • CoolWhip416 Posted: Nov.19 at 12:30 pm
Steph is special. Dude can average 10 dimes and 8 assists!

    • Z Posted: Nov.19 at 1:09 pm
Be a real fan, forget the 22 mil? Hum.. no.

    • riggs Posted: Nov.19 at 1:13 pm
he is entitled to his money, for THIS year…previous years? hell no.

    • [...] Sam I Am is putting his foot down. Enough is enough. Let Starbury spread his wings. (via Slam) “They should let him go,” Cassell told The Post before the Celtics beat the Knicks 110-101 last night. “They always tell us to be professional. Be professional about it. Let the man go.” [...]

@Jukai:: Why would he negotiate his contract down? It was agreed on by both parties and exists so both ends hold up their end of the agreement, regardless of any unforseen circumstances at the time Steph signed it. In all fairness, Donnie Walsh is an idiot for offering such a huge contract.

    • AB_40 Posted: Nov.19 at 3:03 pm
man he should have that kobe clause in there you know 70% of the contract paid at the beginning of the season. I have no idea wich team would sign him. I have just picked up an old issue of slam with the preview of the season when steph just got to NYC. Talking about him doing big things while being home in NYC.

    • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.19 at 3:21 pm
      I’m so sick of this.

    • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.19 at 3:23 pm
The fact is that Steph’s best days are long gone. No one knows what he’ll be able to do on the floor. Honestly I don’t see him getting anything other than a small 1-2 year deal at best. So its probably smart of him to get as much of that paper as he possibly can from the Knicks.

    • Bostwik Posted: Nov.19 at 3:31 pm
      Pharoah! Let my people go!

    • Moose Posted: Nov.19 at 3:42 pm
Don’t bring him here, Sam. I just don’t want that.

    • WhiteOut Posted: Nov.19 at 3:54 pm
Yeah he’s “special” alright. As in a brain dead retard. I doubt the guy can spell his own name.

    • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.19 at 4:16 pm
Why in the WORLD would the Knicks buy Steph out? TRADE his expiring contract at the deadline for some picks & young talent and a short term bad contract. I bet there are at least a half dozen teams that could use the 20+ million in cap space for the summer of ‘09 or ‘10.

When ET phones you instead of home, you must be doing something right.

    • Dallas J Posted: Nov.19 at 5:36 pm
      BETCATS is a genius

    • Dacre Posted: Nov.19 at 10:24 pm
@ClydeSays…It isn’t that easy dude. Who WANTS or can afford that contract…? If your a dud team looking to spend up big and get high draft picks you might be keen, but everyones holding off for 2010.

    • darren Posted: Nov.19 at 10:29 pm
@k.o. Donnie Walsh didn’t give Marbury his contract.

    • AZ Posted: Nov.19 at 11:35 pm
Does this remind anyone of the “Leave britney alone” video?

    • Dacre Posted: Nov.20 at 4:39 am
      LOL… @AZ!!

    • chintao Posted: Nov.20 at 8:45 pm
OK. Yeah, it’s about the money, but it’s also about a guy being run out of his hometown. On some level, I think that must play a part in Marbury’s demand that he not be shorted one dime, or defray one penny from his Knicks contract through his would-be subseqent employer.

    • Harrison Posted: Nov.28 at 12:16 pm
Yea Sammy your buddy Marbury is special, he’s a special pain in the ass head case is what he is, he’s not a winner, he’s not a team player, he’s not a leader, its all about him, he’s a loser with a street ball players mentality, now he’s sulking over not playing and when they do want him to play he refuse’s, lets not forget this isn’t all about fun, he’s a highly paid professional and when you get the kind of money he’s getting to play a game you do what they tell you to do wether its sitting or playing, shut your face and do what the coach tells you to do, the only thing thats bigger than his over blown salary is his ego, he’s a jerk of epic proportions and if I were the owner of the knicks I’d ship his ass out of New York so fast his head would spin, he’s a cancer thats been ailing the knicks ever since they aquired him, its time to eradicate this cancer once and for all and get rid of this clown, any team that would take this guy after all his anitcs needs to have their heads examined.
