T-Mac’s Depressing Injury Woes Continue

by Marcel Mutoni

It’s now well past the point where following the career of one Tracy McGrady requires bringing along a box of tissues. The sadness just never ends.

Mac was forced to leave the Thunder/Rockets game last night early in the third quarter, after his surgically-reconstructed knee “gave out” on him. And from the sound of things, Tracy won’t be seeing the basketball court for a while.

From the Houston Chronicle:

“My knee gave out on me,” McGrady said. “They told me if I was to go back in, and they saw me limping they were going to take me back out. I was like, “Well, that’s what you’re pretty much going to see. My knee is feeling right. I hate to do this, but I’m going to get an MRI tomorrow and until, further notice, I’m going to have to shut it down.”

“Tonight, I went back to square one, like before even surgery. I’ve always been feeling it, but tonight, before that particular play, I came up and it just gave out on me. I’ve been trying to work my way into playing shape and strengthen my leg. I’ve never been 100 percent. I’ve just been hoping playing on it would put me over the edge and I won’t have any more pain, but it hasn’t worked.”

As if Rockets fans hadn’t suffered enough, the hoop gods added to the pain by delivering injury scares to Yao Ming (left ankle) and Ron Artest (left ankle) - both of those guys, however, insist that they will not miss any game action.

The good news, I suppose, is that the team was able to hang on for the win against the miserable Thunder.

Sadly it was only a matter of time.

  • Cheryl Posted: Nov.18 at 9:07 am
TMac needs a new trainer. He’s got the skinniest legs in the league, he obviously needs to strengthen all around.

  • Gaz Posted: Nov.18 at 9:20 am
mmm I heard a rumor that BETCATS wants to bum T-Mac….

  • LexaB Posted: Nov.18 at 9:22 am
On the same page, Marcel… The sadness just never ends with T-Mac!!!

Is it just me or has T-Mac filled out all wrong? The guy just lost all of his explosiveness.

  • MGD Posted: Nov.18 at 9:59 am
I miss his Orlando Magic playing days. The days where Kobe and T-Mac were battling for the 2 gaurd supremacy. (Kobe fans, don`t start; I already agree with you guys.)

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Nov.18 at 10:00 am
    @brian, i play for myself, ya d**k sucker…

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 10:00 am
Yeah Scott, it’s because he filled out wrong, and not because of continuous knee surgeries and back problems.
Someone really should call up Hursty and RV and make sure they haven’t tried to commit suicide yet.

  • brian scalabrine Posted: Nov.18 at 10:00 am
hey cherel wanna sleep with a nba superstar

  • WhaHuh Posted: Nov.18 at 10:06 am
He looked hurt during preseason, grimacing when running the floor. I dont know why he needed to play so early in the season- especially with the artest pickup

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Nov.18 at 10:08 am
    ok, i’m waitin’ for it…

  • brian scalabrine Posted: Nov.18 at 10:19 am
simon i mean ur names simon shouldnt u go talk on nhl.com

  • Dunkadelic TV Posted: Nov.18 at 10:34 am
Tracy McGrady emerged 8-years ago from the shadow of his cousin Vince Carter and it seems that both dunkadelic-highlight reel machines have broken-down and they are merely mediocre star players who can’t stay healthy for an entire season. This was T-Mac’s best chance to win a Championship with the new addition of Ron Artest. Some things are just not in the cards and T-Mac getting a ring seems like a pipe dream.

  • Tuomas Posted: Nov.18 at 10:41 am
Man, a tough pill to swallow. I feel for you Rockets fans.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Nov.18 at 10:43 am
Bahhhhh. Russ, I agree with you and it makes me sad.

  • KA Posted: Nov.18 at 11:17 am
sorry rocket fans. i think i jinxed you guys by jumping on the bandwagon early on, my bad :(

  • kev Posted: Nov.18 at 11:18 am
ron knew that he was gonna get his own squad if he came to hoston. Up next, yao hurts himself trying to dunk and has to retire

  • Khalid Salaam Posted: Nov.18 at 11:27 am
Didn’t we tell everyone (ryne!) that the Rockets can’t be forecasted early on because they get hit with injuries every year. When the season 1st started everyone kept saying, that besides the Lakers and Celtics, they are the most complete team. What do you guys say now? Why do you always drink the kool-aid? Why?

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 12:09 pm
Jukai, no suicide watch, I don’t know about other fans, but i’ve always knew the injuries were the big “if”…..Tmac always finds another excuse, he basically said he wasn’t 100% and was hoping he’d heal himself by playing..who does that? Even Battier isn’t coming back until he’s 100%. Just a bad decision on his part, it was just a matter of time before he tweaked it. And he sure knows how to disappoint fans immediately, most guys would say let me wait until he MRI, he’s already talking like its over for him.

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 12:14 pm
but then i remember he has some scoliosis and can’t help but feel bad for him…That artest injury looked worse than its being talked about, wouldn’t surprise me if he missed a game or two, which is actually a good thing..

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.18 at 12:15 pm
well to be totally honest i still didnt see them in teh finals..its just really sad that this man hasnt played 82 games in the last 4 years ..and onthis rate he will have more of the first round blues….but yao is looking good this year

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 12:24 pm
they should have given Wafer more minutes from the beginning and limited tracy’s…Adelman also needs to learn to take his players out, he’s been leaving them in there with secured leads in the 4th.

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.18 at 12:48 pm
yeah i agree that adelman needsto concentrate on the long run …i think he should leave artest inn so he can get more intact with the team..besides last night he hasnt been playing to is potential…

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 12:51 pm
Khalid: I was wondering why the season preview issue of Slam was filled with “well, hopefully” and “I think” and “or maybe they wont.”

  • Khalid Salaam Posted: Nov.18 at 1:14 pm
RV, i don’t think its fair for u to criticize tmac’s injuries. a guy can’t help that. that being said, he really needs to get a new trainer. whatever he’s been doing simply isn’t working.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.18 at 1:35 pm
    Predictable, but still sad.

  • tealish Posted: Nov.18 at 2:05 pm
It was Shaq’s push that did it!

  • Moose Posted: Nov.18 at 3:49 pm
The Rockets’ nightmares are coming true . . .

  • Michael NZ Posted: Nov.18 at 3:50 pm
I traded T-Mac for Danny Granger after my fantasy draft. Yes!
    Thats all that matters, right?

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.18 at 5:04 pm
Granger for Tmac is a steal. Also, I’m worried that all the injuries and playoff dissapointments have actually gotten into McGrady’s subconcious. All his preseason talk about how he wasn’t healthy and would probably need to miss games/have surgery, that kind of negative thinking always seems to manifest itself one way or another.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.18 at 5:05 pm
Jukai, master of basketabll knowledge, had his fantasy season riding on TMac’s wobbly knees, good thinking. I’m guessing you took Nash 5th overall as well…

  • CP34MVP Posted: Nov.18 at 5:07 pm
hhahahha, i knew the rockets would crash n burn!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.18 at 5:33 pm
Actually I took Lebron first overall, and that’s been working pretty well for me. I took T-Mac in the third round. The problem is, now I have both T-Mac and Gilbert shelved for God knows how long… And I may drop one of them to pick someone else up. I’ll figure that out once I hear the MRI.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.18 at 6:54 pm
@Jukai- no sucide watch. Yet. Although Yao and Artest both had some injuries that game as well. Tmac seems fine actually. Might play vs. the Mavs….

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.18 at 6:57 pm
Good news is that Shane Battier(!) practiced for the first time this season with T-Mac and Ron is good to go. Yao is good as well apparently.
Tmac’s personal trainer is sh*thouse. RV and I have had this ‘discussion’ many times over. Look at his program on youtube….!

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.18 at 6:59 pm
If Ron misses it might actually be a good thing though. Dude has no idea whats happening offensively… and is shooting like 35% or something because of it. Dude is killing my fantasy team haha.

  • Anton Posted: Nov.18 at 7:18 pm
so why does T Mac wear a T-shirt, because he’s self consious of his body?

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 7:39 pm
Anton, not exactly, its one of those compression shirt/sleeves that he wears because of his injured shoulder.

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 7:47 pm
Khalid, Like i said, i feel bad for doing it because i know he has a slight case of scoliosis and once your spine is misaligned it throws off your whole body, so you’re technically always going to jump/land/run incorrectly. My issue is how he goes about handling injuries once he’s already injured. Like Hursty mentioned, his training isn’t right for someone who’s got a bad back/scoliosis. That’s his biggest problem. then coming out and playing when he’s only 70% is another. I’m sure it was his decision, just like it was Battier’s to come back or sit, and he wisely decided to wait until 100% so he wouldn’t tweak it again. Yes, i know stars are suppose to go out and be warriors, but like Tmac said yesterday, his game is based on athleticism, so he can’t bring it while injured. If that’s the case, then sit out until you’re ready. Now the reports indicate Tmac is back to running and practicing, when just last night he was talking like it was going to be a while, he aint a doctor, and he hasn’t exactly predicted his past timetables very well, so just wait for the MRI instead of already declaring defeat.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.18 at 7:48 pm
Doc Rivers said something interesting recently. At a preseason practice in his rookie year, Rivers saw TMac running around without a shirt on. Rivers saw a visible curve in TMac spine and told him he would have back problems. TMac laughed if off, but it was unfortunately true. My question is, besides TMac’s obvious talent, didn’t anyone bother to look at McGrady’s back before drafting him? He’s had health issues every year in he league, mostly related to his back.

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 7:50 pm
another example is Tmac cancelling his MRI today because he felt better. Yao still got an X-ray even though he was sure he was ok. Sounds similar to tmac last season, where he got hurt, said he felt ok and played, then kept hurting and finally was forced to get the MRI and discovered he needed surgery.

  • RV Posted: Nov.18 at 8:15 pm
They knew he had scoliosis. He was told he wouldn’t last 5 years in this league, or something like that, i’m assuming that was prior to being drafted or his rookie year. Unfortunately it wouldn’t have mattered, he’s too talented to not give him an opportunity and he wasn’t going to quit on his own.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Nov.18 at 8:22 pm
    Best wishes to Tracy McGrady.

  • Danny W UK Posted: Nov.18 at 8:53 pm
T-Mac is the next Grant Hill, who was supposed to be the next ‘Mike’. So it’s not all bad is it?

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.18 at 9:04 pm
    Like Vince, Only Weaker.

  • chintao Posted: Nov.18 at 10:42 pm
In some instances, you’re either built for the game, or you’re not. Regrettably, it appears that T-Mac (at least his knee) is NOT built for the game.

  • Yassi Posted: Nov.19 at 9:03 am
somehow some cool guys always play exceptionally great in Orlando……and then……they try to leave the city  maybe some jinx thing when you cross the city limits? Voodoo?

  • NuggsFan4lyfe Posted: Nov.19 at 9:44 am
t-mac y dont you do us all a favor and retire?

  • JeffDaChef Posted: Nov.19 at 4:36 pm
He needs to drink some milk or something to build up the calcium in his bones. I beat if he just started eating healthier and getting more vitamins, he wouldn’t be having all these problems.
