The Post Up: Ivy and Sheed

And LeBron looks happy.

by Holly MacKenzie

Friday! Friday!

How can this week be over already? This was one where the days all sort of ran together. I’m happy the weekend is here. I updated my Facebook status after the Golden State game and wrote “Iverson in Philly.” I need sleep. And a new brain.

Anyway, check out my post over at The Score around 10 this morning. Then it will make sense.

Three games last night. Bron finally got another win over Melo and the Nuggets. It’s exciting to see him excited while he is playing. I’m a fan of the Mo trade and it looks like LeBron is as well. He’s so damn ridiculous. I watched the game last night and actually had the audacity to think, “Wow, he’s really not looking to score tonight”. Check the box score, he’s only, oh, two rebounds shy of a triple-double. Again. We are too spoiled when it comes to that guy.

It will be interesting to see what Kenyon Martin gets fined for his outburst at the officials at the end of the game last night. I’d be pretty steamed with the flagrant-2 that was called, if I were him. We all know Varejao is an actor and it didn’t look like the shove was that bad. It probably was only called like that because of what went down in Phoenix last night.Chauncey looks pretty good in Denver.

Ben Gordon starting has been working out alright for the Bulls. Thirty-five last night to get them over the Mavericks. Rose looked very, very nice. Again. Dirk being held to 12 in a game his team really needed to win? Uh oh.

As much as I love watching Ivy in Detroit (and, I really, really, really love seeing him with a new squad), that loss hurt last night. It is going to be a long, tough and winding road for the Warriors this season. So close and yet so far away from victories, these guys are working, pushing and playing with everything they’ve got. Unfortunately, they just don’t have enough.

I’m trying to stay positive and think of the guys who are getting a chance to show their skill and prove that the deserve to be in this league but, man, I hope the wins come Clutch man.soon.

I can’t handle it. I’m a spoiled Lakers fan. I don’t deal with losing well.

How amazing was that interview with Thompson, Iverson and Sheed? I had goosebumps for the duration of it. Iverson in the Hoyas hat, how can that man be 33? He looks so young. It’s so nuts to hear the two of them talk about their children, or wives helping to rein them in. I cannot believe they’ve been in the league this long.

Michael Curry is my new favorite, new coach in the L. He looks like he’d be so fun to play for because he still gets it.

Iverson taking his shoes off postgame made me wonder who was going to get them.

Notice how tiny he looked standing next to sager for the postgame interview? Crazy. That still kills me.

Tayshaun had 16 rebounds last night. My fantasy team enjoyed that.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. Enjoy that Detroit/LA game tonight.
Cleveland 110 Denver 99

After hearing all about Carmelo Anthony being 7-2 in their previous head to head matchups, LeBron James was able to sneak in another win for himself and his team as he just missed a triple-double last night, scoring 22 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and dishing 11 assists as the Cavaliers took down Denver 110-99. This loss was the first for the Nuggets since acquiring Chauncey Billups from the Pistons. While the Nuggets had their way offensively in the first half, scoring 61 points in the opening 24 minutes, Cleveland stepped it up on the defensive end and allowed only 38 points in the second half as they took control of the game and weathered a Denver push in the final minutes. Besides the big line from James, Mo Williams scored 24 points and Daniel Gibson added 15. Chauncey Billups led the Nuggets with 26 points and 6 assists as Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith each added 18 and Kenyon Martin scored 12 to go with 10 rebounds before getting ejected in the final minute of the game after being called for a flagrant-2 on Anderson Varejao.

Chicago 98 Dallas 91

Still reeling from that loss against the Lakers in a game they should have had, the Mavericks went into Chicago looking for a much needed win. After going up by as many as 19 points in the first quarter, they thought they were on their way to getting it. That lead didn’t last long though, as Ben Gordon let them know it wasn’t going to be that simple. Dropping in 35 points on the night, Gordon and Derrick Rose led the Bulls back. While Dallas went up 25-4 in the opening minutes the Bulls were down by only one at the half and then Rose went to work in the third, dropping in 16 points in the period as Chicago took a two point lead into the fourth. In the final quarter, Dallas would get no closer than seven as the Bulls stole the victory and the Mavericks dropped their fourth straight. Gordon scored his 35 points on 12-21 field goals, while Rose finished with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and Luol Deng added 20. Josh Howard led the Mavs with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Erick Dampier had 16 points and 18 rebounds and Jason Terry added 16 points. Dirk Nowitzki was held to only 12 points in the loss.

Detroit 107 Golden State 102

In a game that saw Detroit ahead and then Golden State take control before the Pistons would rally late, Allen Iverson looked as though he was fitting in quite well with his new teammates. Gone was the hesitation that he had played with in his first two games and in it’s place was a continuation of the free-flowing game he played in a Detroit victory the other night. After losing their lead and watching the Warriors go up by as many as 12 points just before the half, the Pistons went to work in the third and by the start of the fourth, they were in control and ahead by nine. The Warriors would quickly turn things around and briefly take a one-point lead before Iverson found Rasheed Wallace for back-to-back three pointers, giving the Pistons a 96-92 lead as they showed the NBA world that they were learning how to play together. The Warriors kept things close as Detroit missed some free throws down the stretch, but they made them when they needed to and were able to come away with the victory. Iverson finished with 23 points and 9 assists while Richard Hamilton scored 24 points and Wallace added 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince scored 10 points and hauled down 16 rebounds in the win. Andris Biedrins was huge for the Warriors with 17 points and 19 boards as he has had a double-double in every game so far this season. Stephen Jackson scored 15 points and dished 9 assists as CJ Watson scored 17 and Kelenna Azubuike added 15 in the loss.

Sheed’s back-to-back 3′s were clutch. Also, Will Bynum almost posterized someone on the Warriors in the 2nd quarter, but he lost the ball at the last second. Still, that man has some serious hops.

I’m still trying to figure out the Cavs and their 7-2 record. It doesn’t seem right, but we DO take Bron for granted.

Tad, you’re hilarious. Will is a JACKED kid. I like him on your team. Seeing Ivy assist on both of those Sheed threes made me smile inside. Not outwardly, because, you know, GS, but it was nice.

Some b-ball mag in my country (hello French slam addicts!!!) have a NBA preview where they put Derrick Rose… out of the 5 best rookies in the L this year!!!! Good choice boys… DRose is on the road of a great pro career!!! Oh, and LBJ is just ridiculous : you didnt really see him for the whole game and bam… two rebounds shy of a triple-double!!! That man is just a sick b-baller !!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Holly, i’ll say it up front: I have no problem with breaking your heart two nights in a row. Remember, it’s not personal.

Stuckey returns tonight! Felt good saying that.

Deeeetroit basketball. Aside from Kwame getting straight dominated by AB on the inside it was a good game.

  • http://www.myspace.com/2536545 Bryan

Also AB is terrible for a nickname I just don’t feel like typoing his whole name.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Yeah, Kwame has some of the slowest ‘fast-twitch’ muscles in the L.

That sh*t was ridiculous tad , I’ve not seen so many offensive rebounds given up in a quarter in forever.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Yeah, Biedrins is everything Kwame could/should be. If only he gave a f*ck more than once every 4 games.

  • http://www.myspace.com/2536545 Bryan

No sh*t dude, every time I watched him play in his career I’m like he really should be good and I can’t figure out why he isn’t, physically at least.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well, I have better hands than him on the court, so there’s that.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

But also, Biedrins is really good. His haircut still sucks though.

  • Candice

Holly last year Denver swept the Cav’s convincely. Tadd let’s not jinx thing’s with Detroit, I want them to win too for obvious reason’s. I thought the Bull’s game was over but I’m glad that the BUll’s came back and won. I wonder how those GM’s feel for not even putting Rose as canidate for ROY.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well, it is what it is. The Pistons are already 2-0 on their 4-game West trip, so tonight isn’t a MUST win, but it would be nice to make a mark.

Tad, I’m going for my boys tonight. Ivy or no Ivy, you know where my loyalty lies. Candice, I bet your are tuning in to more Pistons games than you ever imagined! Also, Kwame is a huge, huge, huge man. His numbers just don’t make sense.

  • http://www.myspace.com/2536545 Bryan

I’m just rooting for a good game Holly no matter who wins.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

HAHA @ Holly saying kwame’s numbers dont make sense. What DOES make sense about kwame?

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

haha just saying… the guy is so ridiculously huge and strong and everything a basketball player SHOULD ideally be, physically. Mind-boggling, that guy. TAD, check The Score’s blog. Candice, you too! ;)

Holly it’s so hard too because I’m a Bull’s fan. When Ai got traded to Detroit I was completly torn. When he was in Philly it was okay, but now he’s in the same divison as my Bull’s. Holly tonight you know who I’m rooting for and obviously the fan’s want to see my Bull’s against your Laker’s on fan night. That game start’s the dreadful circus trip for the Bull’s. I’ll check your blog out Holly.

Tad I’m with you and this is coming from a Chicagoan. I don’t like the Tiger’s or Lion’s and sometimes the Piston’s(AI does wonder’s). Before and After the trade I still would be with you because my dislike for the Laker’s is much greater.

Holly is one of the few Laker fans that I can talk to. The rest have some sort of complex issue or something.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I can’t figure out if the Cavs offensive explosion was proof that Mo Wiliams is a difference maker, or proof that Denver’s defensive problems go way beyond Allen Iverson.
Although, Allen Iverson is not great on the ball, he is without a doubt, the best ballhawk in the league. I believe I’ve said this before.
The Pistons as whole seem to only be able to rebound and play defense in spurts. They need McDyess bad because those other cats are not ready for primetime just yet.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Also included on that list: Myles, Marcel, Bodie, and Namik.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq al Haydar

    Tad…what about me?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Allenp: Agreed. Amir can jump out of the gym, but it doesn’t do much good when you are getting pump-faked. Maxiell is our best pick-and-roll guy, but he is undersized. Kwame is Kwame. We won’t go there.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Also, Tayshaun Prince is a grown ass man and needs to be an All-Star and All-Defense immediately.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Ah Tariq, you are a freshly sworn in Laker fan. I don’t really consider you among those diehards. But you know we good my man.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Kwame should be getting more minutes because he is good defensively against most big. Biedrins is just so damn active. He takes shots that he doesn’t expect to go, but that he just wants to get up on the rim so he can get the offensive rebound and put back. Kind of like Moses Malone.
Kwame can defend and rebound but he needs regular minutes to get into the flow.
Did y’all see all those drop offs and open shots Iverson gets the Pistons? Players like Affalo and Maxiell are going to love playing with him.
And has anybody noticed how horrible Anthony Carter and Linas Kleiza look now? With Kleiza some of it can be attributed to his contract situation, but I think both he and Carter miss the shots Iverson creats for players. However, Nene is probably pretty glad to see Iverson gone. Nene is defintely getting better touches. What is wrong with Melo? He didn’t even look close to Lebron’s level last night.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariq al Haydar

    Yeah. dang.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Yeah, I thought Melo looked off last night as well. Maybe the haircut? Billups is looking really good. Melo seems to be taking a ton of jumpers instead of going to the hole.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Billups had a Billups game. He can get hot, and hit a few jumpers, but he can also go pretty cold, which happened late. However, he was taking the ball to the rack much more than I expected.
Fratello said that Melo never looks lost on offense, but I disagree. He seemed lost to me. He still does not handle double teams well, despite seeing them his whole career. He almost always makes up his mind before he catches the ball whether he’s going to shoot or pass, and he also typically decides what offensive move he’s going to use before he sees the defense. Watching he and Lebron on offense it was difficult to tell that Melo was the player hyped as a “pure scorer” and Lebron was supposed to be a playmaker. Lebron understands how to get his shot, and I noticed that when Cleveland ran it’s sets they got good looks. Their offense only bogged down when they tried to start freelancing.
Chauncey is still good defensively, but he misses having bigs who help on dribble drives and show hard on pick and rolls. Nene is a lazy defender.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I hope Phil gives Jordy the chance to man up AI. He’s been playing great d so far this year and I want to see him get really tested.

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

Allenp: Didn’t Fratello say that Melo looked lost on the DEFENSE but is never lost on the offense?

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

also, I still say Cavs v Lakers NBA finals. I really like the crew assembled around Lebron!

  • Candice

AllenP I felt AI and Nene had great chemistry. He was getting his touches until Melo came back from suspension. Nene first big came was with AI in that overtime game agaisnt the Clipper’s.

  • ciolkstar

I’ve had a weak start in my fantasy league but I’m pretty confident about my core: Joe Johnson, Caron Butler, Danny Granger and Melo. Those guys should be able to carry me (in a 10 team laegue)

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

Cleveland is a nice fit for Ben Wallace, he plays great with Big Z because on defense, he has an extra guy to help him anchor the defense (like back in Detroit with Rasheed) but on offense, he is usually alone under the basket because Big Z likes to drift off for that midrange jumper (like back in Detroit with Rasheed).
Wally World is getting it too.

ciolkstar: that sounds like high scoring, low percentage. I’m not a fan.

I’m so happy Will Bynum is in the league! I remember watching a NY vs Chi highschool all stars game where Bynum came of the bench and absolutely lit it up. Bombing from 2 steps across halfcourt, he’s a little bull in the lane too. I’d always wondered whatever happened to him, he didnt get much tick in Arizona but he looks to have found a niche. Dude is just rugged too. Detroit looks like a great fit for him.

  • ciolkstar

Kleiza looks like he’s depressed or on drugs or something. Dark circles under his eyes, no energy…they need him to contribute more than deep 3s. JR sorta went off last night, and it looked like he was the focus of the offense when Carmelo was out of the game, but that just might’ve been because he never passes.

  • ciolkstar

Melo only got up 12 shots last night. Chauncey is really spreading the rock and Melo only sporadically moves without the ball. I cant say I’m happy about how melo’s offensive game is looking right now though.

I had to pick at the turn in my draft so I get the 10th, 11th, 30th, 31st, 50th, 51st picks and so on…had to get the best value at each spot. Joe Johnson, Granger, Melo and Caron can all put up top 15 production. I like my team just fine.

Cleveland seems to have finally taken the ball out of Brons hands in those ridiculous 1-4 sets and has him moving off the ball as a finisher. It keeps the defense from concentrating on him and also makes him that much more of a creator. And it seems to be working. May have underestimated the ol Cavs this year. And I may have to make a trip to Cleveland on February 8th. Maybe.

I think Mo Williams really improves their offsenive chemistry. Lebreezy can still iso at the top of the key when he wants to, but he’s so dangerous cutting without the ball.

Kwame is not a bad defender, all the Pistons want from him is rebounding and defense. He’s got slow feet and poor hands, but he does give effort and thats one of the most important parts of being a good defender. he’ll be fine in the starting lineup. Rasheed might be able to get more blocks coming on help defense anyway, plus Sheed is more able to step out on PFs who can shoot the midrange J.

Man, unstoppable is not a strong enough word for what Lebron is when he is moving towards the rim at full speed.
    I need a new word.
    Maybe.
    god.
    Yep, that sounds right.
Lebron James on the move towards the rim at full speed is a basketball god. He rules his domain.
Also, if Lebron is ever injured I predict mass suicides in Cleveland.

B: The only reason Kwame is starting is because we will be facing some bigger front lines in the next few games and Curry wanted him to get some burn with the starters. Amir is still the starter for the bulk of games.

I’ve never paid too much attention to Detroit before… can anyone tell me if they’d struggled this much at rebounding before? Their defensive rebounding was atrocious yesterday. Biedrins was tearing them up. And was dude underrated last year or is he just playing out of his damn mind this season?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Tealish: Detroit is actually 2nd in the league in allowing second chance points, so it isn’t normal for them. Biedrins is really good as well. Kwame also doesn’t know how to block out.

^or play basketball in general. Cake for everyone!

yup Allenp. I was talking to a friend on the phone while watching that Cavs game and I honestly could not think of a word, or series of words, that could do Bron’s game justice. Couldn’t do it. “God” might be just about right.

    TAD
I’m going to have to co-sign tealish. I’ve never watched Detroit that often, but since the trade I’m shocked at their sieve like defense and horrible rebounding.
It cannot all be Iverson’s fault. Sure, he messes up, but it’s like cats don’t even try sometimes. Plus, they’re playing this new small ball thing that is really vulnerable. I was happy for the wins against the Kings and the Warriors but both of those teams were winning for most of the game.
I’m quite worried that tonight’s game will be a laugher.

Allenp: Understand that we have a “rookie” head coach who is new at this. We are also starting a 21-year-old for the first time in his NBA career and expecting him to play against polished PF’s alongside Sheed. We also no longer have Dice off the bench. Add in that Kwame is now an integral part of the rotation because of this and Curry is doing what he has to do. The smaller, 3-guard lineups is out of necessity at times. Would you rather rely on Kwame, or put Tay at the 4 with Stuck/Rip/AI/Hermann/Bynum/Afflalo combo’s? Yeah.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

So yeah, we have been slipping in the interior D/rebounding departments. It is to be expected. We’ll be fine.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I actually think Kwame needs more minutes with Sheed. Ask Kwame to play ben wallace to Sheed’s Big Z. Kwame can be your hustle, rebound and defense guy. He can also make a couple layups. I think Curry needs to play them more together with Prince, Iverson and Hamilton.

  • tealish

TAD, I hope you’re right. Sadly, I think Allenp’s worry for tonight’s game will be justified as early as halftime. The Pistons have looked so lost on defense, I cannot see them stopping the boys from LA just yet.
McDyess better come back though — I definitely cannot see a successful playoff run with Kwame being an integral part of the rotation.
As an AI fan, I did not wish to face the Lakers this early. With all things considered, a close game down to the wire should be a positive for Detroit.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Well, apparently i’m the only one who is giving Detroit a chance tonight. I admit i’m way biased but hey, i’m a fan. Sue me. I don’t want no moral victories, I want one that actually counts.
    Either way, i’ll be watching.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Allenp: I have no problem giving Kwame more time because we will need him. However, I also know that a successful season will require young Amir to grow into his role. Mixed results so far, but that is to be expected. I just know the kid has a ton of hustle and heart and I expect him to be a huge part of our future.

  • tealish

Yeah, of course they have a chance. If Rip plays like Rip, AI is his usual greatness and the Pistons defend and rebound strong– they can beat any team in the league.
I just want to fast forward and watch this team in 2 months time to see what they can be.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Oh definitely. I wish that I could. I like a lot of what Curry has put in and also love that Tayshaun is playing up to his potential right now and know that it can only get better. I’m gonna keep reminding myself not to get to high or low over this game tonight.

  • Candice

Tad your not the only one who think’s Detroit has a chance.

  • tealish

Cosign on Tayshaun. He has been flat out terrific. I love when after a rebound, he palms the ball fully extended away from everybody and everything. It’s so damn far away it’s ridiculous!
I just wish for AI’s sake, they do reasonably well tonight. Unlike Billups, he’s not that steady rock. He plays emotionally which is great but I just fear that a humiliating blowout will stir up the doubt in his mind which then extends to his teammates. Who will be the emotional leader to reign them in? That was Chauncey’s job, no?
This is all WORST CASE SCENARIO material which I can’t help but think about with this being AI’s first and last chance.
