The Post Up: Lakers and Celtics Roll… Again

They make it look easy.

Detroit's D?

by Holly MacKenzie

So, last night was one of those unbelievably frustrating nights when it comes to basketball. I did not get to watch either game. Yes. I know. This damn TSN2 crap again. We really need to get this sorted because I am missing my Thursday night, “NBA on TNT” routine.

I’ve got some recaps below, but you know, be patient with me, since I didn’t see ANY of the game.

I did see the Pistons/Celtics highlights. Wow. I claim the Pistons as my pick for the East and then the Celtics go out and rip them. Again. Boston is going to be very, very tough, but especially so at home. If anyone wants to get out of the East, their best bet is going to be having homecourt, because KG and crew are ridiculously good at home.

The Lakers won and won big against the Suns. I see the final score isn’t that huge of a margin, but the livestats were showing them up a lot in the fourth. I thought LA would win, but I really expected a much more competitive contest.

Last night did not involve any basketball, but it was still fun. Chris O’Leary is in town for the weekend (and Marcel is coming through on Saturday), so it was good to have some extra SLAM here in Toronto. Our plan was for basketball, but you know, there wasn’t any on, so drinks and nachos became the next best thing.

Of course, while sitting down, we noticed Pistons/Celtics highlights and then thought our eyes were deceiving us when the score appeared. Man. I just realized how much I want the Pistons to take the East when I saw the score last night and felt really frustrated.

Tonight is the return of Vince Carter to the Air Canada Centre, so that should be great. I’m looking forward to shootaround this morning. I’ve heard it’ll be a media circus from one of the beat writers, so that’s always fun.

KG back in Minnesota tonight, as well. That will be huge, too. Looking forward to watching the reaction he gets.

One more personal note: Tomorrow is the Vanier Cup Championship game for university football and I’m sending lots of love to one of my favorite boys.

Also: I love Magic Johnson in his pinstripe suit and purple tie. Saw that in the highlights.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. See you Monday at 9.

Boston 98 Detroit 80

While the Pistons had the excuse of Allen Iverson’s first home game to explain their last blowout loss to the Celtics, they didn’t have that last night as Boston took the game, 98-80. While the Pistons led by as many as 11 early in the first quarter, the two teams were tied at 21 at the end of the first and the Celtics used strong second and third quarters to bury Detroit. With the Pistons managing only 36 points in those two quarters combined, the Celtics poured in 56 as they went ahead by as many as 29 in the second half. Rajon Rondo ran circles around the Pistons as he finished with 18 points and 8 assists. Tony Allen scored 13 points and Kevin Garnett added 15. Iverson led the way for the Pistons with 16 points as Rasheed Wallace scored 13 and Rip Hamilton added 12 in the loss.

LA Lakers 105 Phoenix 92

This is one of those games where the final score does not tell the tale. With the Lakers leading by as many as 18 points in the game, they cruised to victory over the Suns, with Phoenix only making up ground in the final minutes when the game was already out of reach. While Kobe Bryant shot only 8-23 from the floor, the Lakers were able to overcome his shooting woes as they had a 43-point effort from their bench. While the game started out tight, with LA up only two at the end of one, the Suns were unable to match the pace and efficiency of the Lakers offense and slowly LA pulled away. Despite the shooting percentage, Bryant still finished with 24 points while Vladamir Radmanovich added 15 and Lamar Odom scored 13 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Amare Stoudemire led the suns with 21 points while Shaquille O’Neal added 15 points and 9 rebounds and Steve Nash dished 10 assists to go with 8 points in the loss.

    Lakers, the team to beat.

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

You forgot the inordinate amount of chicken wings that I ended up with. You know that scary good vibe the Lakers put out to start the season? Boston’s sending out the same thing right now.

I’m so glad I had a rec league game last night and didn’t have to watch the Pistons get whooped.

However, Michigan DID beat UCLA. I saw the end of that game and was happy. I expect Cub to comment.

how about luke walton being blocked (emphatically) by louis amundson and hitting the three right in front of the suns bench? way to jaw at the suns, luke. even he felt awkward doing it.
amundson, by the way, had 2 blocks, 2 rebounds and 2 points in 4 minutes of play.

I’m in Ontario, and I watched both games last night – on TSN2. FIgure it out, Holly!

Congrats on the Wolverines, Tad. That was a huge win for a program in need of one. The Celtics are just playing at another level right now. I know everyone says they lost a little bit with James Posey leaving but Tony Allen has been killing for them off the bench. We’ll see if he can carry that into the playoffs.

I don’t know what happened with the Pistons in the second half, but it was embarrassing to watch. They just rolled over.

Oh yeah, I came to the conclusion last night that the Western Conference has offically fallen off as the head and shoulders best conference in the league. Yes, they’re still more talented top to bottom but alot of the usual powerhouses are very mediocre on the west side this year. Then again, it is still early.

    why Brian S hates me???

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

    i’m just a laker fan…

  • ciolkstar

Rondo is a beast he started slow, but I’m projecting a career year for him. Al HArrington is a FA in my league, should I drop David Lee for him?! Help!

  • ciolkstar

Nolan Smith plays for Duke right? I think I saw that dunk on the semi break… yup, I’m a Duke fan AND a Spurs fan – keep hating. (I’m from SA and half of my fam went to Duke, so atleast there are good reasons for both)

  • Young Chris MP3

That last line isn’t necessarily true Holly. The Suns were leading throughout the first half and it was closer than an 18 point lead would let you believe in the second. The Lakers had a nice run to blow it open but the Suns kept coming back within single digits and then letting up once more. Lakers definitely were gonna win last night but they didn’t necessarily cruise to victory.

  • Young Chris MP3

    And Tony Allen sucks

  • ciolkstar

Tony Allen is a young beast. He was awesome at OK State and has been slowed by injuries since going pro. I never understood why people would use him as a punch line, the guy can play.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

@Young Chris: Somebody is a little bitter that his Hornets aren’t the world beaters that they where being hyped up to be in the offseason, no matter how many 20 and 10 nights CP3 has.

  • riggs

tony allen sucks like paul mooney being unfunny.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

@ciolkstar:Tony is great but he is also dilusional, ask his teammates.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Tony Allen *was* a young beast…His injury put a dead-stop on the momentum he had.

I watched the way the Celtics destroyed the Pistons. I’m sad.
Pistons looked lost on offense, and then they kind of quit. Cats were mad at Iverson for dribbling too much(which he did at times) but all of them seemed to be freelancing instead of running the offense. They lacked intensity and the Celtics did not.
Oh well, it’s a long season. We shall see what happens.

Ryne: UPDATE ODENIZED. Youtube dont work on the school computers

  • Jackie Moon

The Celtics and Lakers trains are beginning to accelerate, and if they sustain this pace it’s going to culminate in a Brobdingnagian clash on Christmas Day.

  • Justin

Kobe and Pierce are shooting 44% and 40% so far this season. Once these guys get in a rhythm I don’t know what team is going to stop them.

  • ciolkstar

Still, I dont get all the TONY ALLEN hate? And since I dont have KG’s cell number, what do you mean “he’s dilusional” B Long? I, for one, am happy he’s finding a role and contributing.

  • MIchael

Is Kobe obligated to suck to start every season. I swear he plays horrible in NOvember/December every damn year.

  • ClydeSays

Loved watching the C’s beat down Detroit. AI came out hot, but the Celts made their adjustments and clamped down.

I do think Detroit could get better as the season goes. Still early. Pistons don’t seem all that interested in Defense this season, though. That could be a problem.

  • LeeVan

Not being able to get TSN2 on Rogers cable is very frustrating. However, being able to boo “wince” carter(purposeful non-use of capitalization) tonight at the ACC, all while getting paid to quasi-work, will be highly delightful.

    RIP yo momma jokes

  • chicagogreen

How are the lakers the team to beat? Are you watching the celtics?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

^your questioning Holly? Dont do that! Stackmack is a genius, she is a intellect. I think she knows what she is talking about.
