Tonight, ‘Melo Will Shoot and Score for Obama

by Marcel Mutoni

I know I didn’t include the Nuggets/Warriors game in today’s edition of ‘Worthy of Your Attention‘, and now I feel like an idiot. So, I’ll make up for it by giving the contest its own post.

The Nuggets will be playing their first game since Allen Iverson was traded to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, but all eyes will be on star forward Carmelo Anthony and his attempt to honor President Barack Obama.

From the Denver Post:

At the Nuggets’ shootaround, there was a post-election buzz. Carmelo Anthony smiled and said, “I’m going to try to score 44 tonight,” in honor of president-elect Barack Obama, who was elected Tuesday as America’s 44th president.

Not sure how serious Anthony was when he said this, but either way, it’s pretty cool. Needless to say, you’d be a fool to miss out on this. Tip off is 10:30 EST.

Since Iverson isn’t playing, I may just have to check this out.

  • ab_40 Posted: Nov.5 at 6:54 pm
30-7-3 for the season at the end of 08-09 for mr Anthony this season

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.5 at 6:59 pm
good thing he’s playing against the warriors rather than celtics then.

  • biz Posted: Nov.5 at 7:02 pm
44 is too easy, he should try to score 349 for the number of electoral votes obama has won

  • Sesa Posted: Nov.5 at 7:06 pm
Or he may end up just doing 44 shot attempts, NOT scoring 44.

  • Placktose Posted: Nov.5 at 7:07 pm
haha yea god point albie, he could very easily score 44… hopefully he doesnt score it too early and sit out the rest of the game though…
Also now that iverson is gone he can go back to being the top scorer in the league just like how things were before iverson ahhh feels good

  • JackBrown Posted: Nov.5 at 7:20 pm
This is going to be hilarious.

  • iheartcoffee Posted: Nov.5 at 7:23 pm
I hope this goes well, I have him on my fantasy team.

  • JackBrown Posted: Nov.5 at 7:25 pm
So if he scores 43 would he accidentally honor Dubya?

  • Placktose Posted: Nov.5 at 7:26 pm
me too, after the first terrible game and missing the first two games i need a big game from him tonight

  • JackBrown Posted: Nov.5 at 7:29 pm
I’m guessing he’ll be closer to honoring Lincoln. I need to stop.

  • RV Posted: Nov.5 at 7:33 pm
i think he would have aimed it for it regardless since they’re missing the starting point guard and its the warriors..

  • Placktose Posted: Nov.5 at 7:46 pm
true rv… actually thinking bout it more, when he tries to score too much he comes off looking like a fool, he’ll probably put up 30 shots.. and make about 5 it sad though because i need a big game out of him

  • Anton Posted: Nov.5 at 7:52 pm
I thought “Republicans buy shoes too”, you douchebag

  • Placktose Posted: Nov.5 at 7:54 pm
Wow its looking like it might be Amare honoring Obama not Melo already scored 21 on 8-8 from field and 5-5 from line

  • Bobby Posted: Nov.5 at 8:37 pm
can somebody refresh my memory… but did Melo come out with something dumb like wearing a T-shirt that said “Kerry should have tried harder” last election? then admitted he didnt vote? i might have it wrong, but somethings tickling my memory here

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Nov.5 at 8:43 pm
He’ll score 44, and he’ll do it while wearing Steve Francis’ jacket.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.5 at 9:14 pm
Carmelo Hussein Anthony should burn in hell! Burn!! Burn Carmelo Hussein Anthony burn you burn!!! (J/K)

  • Juscheckin Posted: Nov.5 at 9:48 pm
People keep saying that Melo will now be able to go back to being a top scorere in the L now that Iverson is gone…was Melo not one of the top 5 scorers in the L with Iverson there? I think Iverson was #3 and Melo was #5. Hell im glad Iverson left so his game can stop being handcuffed to please Melo and AI can go back to his game… Melo should know he could have always got his if he would have just played the game with a little heart and get down and dirty like he’s supposed to.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.5 at 9:54 pm
Ok, Phoenix in a Transition period is fine, but Amare scoring FOURTY NINE (while adding 11 boards, 5 Steals (!) and 6 Assists(Whattt?!) plus 2 blocks to top it off?? Good grief! That’s already the line to beat this season and it’s only week 2. He better keep the Goggles after healing just like Rip kept the mask. DAMN, what a performance. (he hit all 15 free throws too, sheeeeit) Oh and “Eff” Melo.

  • ericmontross Posted: Nov.5 at 10:06 pm
If he scores more than 44 points those excess points will be “redistributed” to Renaldo Balkman?

  • chintao Posted: Nov.5 at 10:14 pm
@ Anton ==> Perhaps ‘Melo would prefer that Republicans stick strictly with MJ’s signature line.

  • KA Posted: Nov.5 at 10:28 pm
    lol at sesa, melo sucks!

  • Klemperer Posted: Nov.5 at 10:41 pm
And did LBJ just score 41 in honor George H.W?

  • Joel O's Posted: Nov.5 at 11:43 pm
These prediction things are just weird, IMHO. What if Melo scored 44 points midway through the fourth quarter… would he have to shut it down the rest of the way and be a, well, facilitator? It’s not like its CP3′s mythic “61″; 44 is pretty damn attainable for a guy like Melo on this Denver team.

  • what Posted: Nov.6 at 1:02 am
Yeah… this ain’t happening tonight unless there’s double overtime. Still a solid game from Melo though.

  • what Posted: Nov.6 at 1:03 am
Tony Parker is looking ahead into the future and honoring someone we’re gonna elect 60-70 years from now.

  • tealish Posted: Nov.6 at 1:05 am
Well, while championed as the “prolific scorer” that he is, he’s never broken 49pts. So I’m not too worried about this hypothetical situation where he gets 44 halfway through the 4th and having to shut it down.

  • tealish Posted: Nov.6 at 1:07 am
With his jumper on, Tony Parker can be the best player in the league. Well not exactly, but pretty damn close to.

  • Jack Posted: Nov.6 at 1:30 am
Tony Parker the best player in the league??? Ahahahahahahahahaha fool. Melo didnt get his 44 but i can see him averagin like 30-8-5 this season.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 1:32 am
he was sooooo close…maybe not…damn didn’t even get the W for Obama either…

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 1:39 am
No, not right now,” James said of a future in politics. “I might see myself up there in a navy suit, red tie, nice.” What about mayor of his hometown? “Mayor of Akron?” he said. “I’m already mayor of Akron. I’ve been that for about 10 years now.”

  • minnie Posted: Nov.6 at 1:53 am
Melo ended up honoring Woodrow Wilson… oh well!

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.6 at 1:58 am
so much for that. Thanks Melo, don’t let WHOOO’S door hit you in the back of your head on your way out. Oh and Toné Toni Tony… Quel explosion! His line of 55/10/7 impressive as it was for a PG (ok, it was stunning, i admit) was still not my favorite tonight. It WAS double OT after all. Amare wins. But pop’s boys are truly in trouble when only the robot (30 pts), Mason(26) and Mr. Longoria score and they needed 2OT to dispatch a young Minny team. Gonna be a looong season, Manu or not.

  • LA Huey Posted: Nov.6 at 2:07 am
    Fail.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.6 at 2:13 am
    Woodrow Wilson is psyched.

  • tealish Posted: Nov.6 at 2:13 am
Who else has gotten 50/10 in the past 10 years? Besides Iverson.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.6 at 2:39 am
55 for Parker? Throw in 10 assists and 7 boards. 49 for STAT? (Great for my fantasy team)? 41 for LeBron?
    Fantastic.

  • clapzilla Posted: Nov.6 at 2:54 am
Note To Melo: Don’t Make Dumb “I’m Gonna Try” Predictions When You Haven’t Shaken Off The Early-Season Shooting Rust. If You Just So Happen To Score 44 Say After The Game “Yeah, I Scored Those 44 For The New Leader of The Free World.” Its That Simple. STAT And Parker Probably Dedicated Their Scoring To Future Presidents. U-S-A! U-S-A! (even though parker is french) U-S-A!

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.6 at 3:01 am
LeBron put a 50/10/8 on the Knicks at the Garden in March of this year. In regulation.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.6 at 3:13 am
i second clapzilla’s opinion regarding Melo.

  • Darksaber Posted: Nov.6 at 3:14 am
Lebron had 41? Damn, Barack sure inspired the stars last night

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Nov.6 at 8:20 am
Russ gets line of the night. Probably the week. Maybe the year.

  • Chris Ujma Posted: Nov.6 at 8:33 am
    44 responses for Obama….now

  • jaywhy Posted: Nov.6 at 9:13 am

[...] And so the planets align for Anthony. Losing the ‘rows may have been one thing, but taking sole possession of the Nugs’ offense is another. With A.I. gone, and Chauncey Billups arriving, Denver basically traded a guy who takes 19 shots per for a guy who takes 11. Melo is suddenly firmly entrenched as the Numero Uno gunner. When he wanted to honor Barack Obama by busting the Warriors for 44 the day after the presidential election, he instead should’ve said, Screw that, I’m dropping 44 on everyone this year. [...]
