Trade: Can Al Harrington Find Happiness in New York?

by Marcel Mutoni

The last time Peter Vecsey of the NY Post reported an NBA trade, let’s just say that things didn’t exactly work out. But, hey, everyone makes mistakes. He’s bound to get one of these stories right. Right?

For what it’s worth, The Viper says the Knicks and Warriors have a deal in place. Al Harrington is reportedly no longer a Golden State Warrior.

Knicks sources said a deal for Al Harrington was to go through late yesterday, but was delayed until today. A league conference call is scheduled for this morning that would bring the disgruntled Warriors forward to the Knicks, presumably for Malik Rose.

The move will reunite [Donnie] Walsh with Harrington, whom the Pacers president drafted out of high school (No. 25) in 1998.

I realize that Harrington has only suited up for a handful of games this season and had become persona non grata in Oakland, but Malik Rose? Seriously, that’s the best Chris Mullin could do? Yikes. No wonder they don’t let him in on some of the big team decisions anymore.

As for the Knicks, well, they’re getting a good player (who’s owed a little under $20 mil over the next couple of years). He should be able to get minutes in D’Antoni’s system; what remains to be seen is if he’ll deem those to be enough.

LMAO….malik rose? if hes wrong, what is vecsey smoking? if he’s right what are the warriors smoking?

  • http://slamonline.com purty

    good deal for the knicks!

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

riggs; Probably the same as Al is smoking.

  • adams

I don’t care if Al Harrington is happy.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Is Chris Mullin allowed to make *any* roster decisions anymore? Rose will provide cap space and save them $13 million, though.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

In just one move, Donnie Walsh trumps Zeke.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Ahh TAD be fair, Zeke still gets the nod for his twin burger experiment.

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

TADOne: you mean the Knicks above .500 winning record didn’t do that already?

  • Torrance

This would be a horrible trade for the W’s. Horrible.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Chris Mullin is the new Zeke.

  • Sparker

wouldn’t this be the THIRD time walsh acquired harrington? isn’t that some kind of record?

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

I care if Al Harrington’s happy. I just hope that somewhere, Johnathan Bender is, too.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Btw TAD not to be a jerk, but remember me telling you that Dumars was for sure breaking up the Pistons’ core. Well I told you so. With that said I think Pistons chances of a ring is far greater with the little hungry one boosting their offense.

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

I think the Pistons are not getting a ring with AI unless they seriously get rid of Hamilton. The dude is forcing more shots than Cheney at a pheasant hunt.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

This should be fun to watch for New York. You know that time a players career where they will finally blossom into a superstar or completely fade into obscurity, Al Harrington, your on the clock.

  • http://myspace.com/embracedfla Bryan

Why not get marbury? He would be a beast in oakland.

  • http://www.myspace.com/freedmusic Fredd

the W will soon look like a D-league team …

  • jay

al and bron will make a beautifull couple. Oh wait…

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

Bryan has a point (for once). Wouldn’t a Marbury for Harrington literally solve, well, everything?

  • ciolkstar

Harrington is a FA in my league, should I drop David Lee for him?!

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

you ignorami who fail to see the financial gain for the warriors crack me up.. “This would be a horrible trade for the W’s. Horrible.”

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

marbury for harrington straight up would not work salary-wise

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/overdribbling chiqo

i understand wanting to save money by getting an expiring contract, but good lord.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/nba/overdribbling chiqo

fyi: rick bucher says it’s jamal crawford who’s involved.

  • vmcb

ugh. I have a feeling this will seriously cut into Chandler’s production.

  • ciolkstar

I think David Lee will be the big loser if he doesn’t get dealt, D’Antoni wants shooters at every position..

  • rainman10

Knicks clips and warriors are supposedly workin on somethin that would send crawford and randolph out of NY and bring in Tim Thoms, Cuttino, and Harrington.

  • j

Rose is only under contract this year, correct? Even if he sucks, we clear the salary and don’t limit ourselves as much for free agency.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Peter Vesey sees dead people. He is a creative child. And rainman; Tim Thomas already was a Knick, i dont think he would want to return.

  • tracey

yea he can, if they get rid of zach randolph, and eddy curry.. get some legitimate depth in the front court that can get out and run. they had it fine, before they got rid of trevor ariza and channing frye..

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Al Harrington looks like Donatello. Not the artist, but the ninja turtle. And that said, I’d be happy to see him out of the Bay. Bring us David Lee. Or Malik Rose. Or some really fresh bagels.

  • j

I’d happily take the bagels and a statue of liberty magnet.

  • NBK

Malik Rose has a 6 million dollar expiring contract. It may be a little more than 6 mill too, i am pretty sure Chris Mullan just basically knocked 15 million off the cap for this summer, he was not going to play harrington anyway now he has some money to get a good talent…..

  • NBK

For the knicks though this trade does not make much sense, is al harrington not almost the exact same type of player as gallinari? If not isn’t he the same as wilson chandler? or david lee? I actually like this for the warriors more than the knicks.

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Trades done. We got…Crawford?! I don’t know. Seems bad for both sides. Warriors don’t need anymore shoot first guards and now the Knicks suck worse. Oh well.

  • G-O

    Free starbury :(

  • Cizzo

There is really no temporary solition pray for these team’s rebuild, rebuild……………

  • Cizzo

There is really no temporary solition pray for these team’s rebuild, rebuild……………

  • RV

the knicks want to clear cap space, harrington’s contract expires just in time for the lebron sweepstakes…crawford is going to kill the development of Morrow.

  • NBK

Crawford this trade makes little to no sense at all for either team.

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

RV might be right. I hope he isn’t.

  • ciolkstar

The deal is Crawford for Harrington. Will D’Antoni play Chadler at the 2-3? Does this hurt D Lee’s value even more?! Harrington is a FA in my league…

  • RV

It makes sense for the knicks, at least long term, for the warriors, i’m not sure what they’re doing…maybe they’re trying to build a team based purely on combo guards and swingmen. Monta/Crawford/Morrow/Magette/Jackson/Azubuike…that’s the deepest 1 to 3 spots in the league, but leaves them with little talent up front except for Biedrins.

  • NBK

RV is right thats why this is stupid, Harrington is going to screw up the development of Gallinari if he ever is healthy, and Crawford was killing for the Knicks now he is with 400 other wing players in GS. Are they really going to play Crawford at the 1? Is he supposed to shore up the Monte Ellis injury? WHat happens when Monte comes back they are going to start monte, crawford, jackson, maggs, and biedrins? The GS situation is too wierd to understand. Are they trying to win or score 200?

  • RV

i’m not sure they’d attract Lebron though, they only have Randolph, curry, Jefferies, gallinari, chandler and collins signed after 2010. Lebron isn’t winning multiple championships with guys like that. Sure they can try and acquire more talent, but i dont think Lebron joins them if all they do is promise to get more help.

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

I don’t see any REAL links to the Crawford thing, just guessing, so I’m not so sure. That trade doesn’t make sense.
It would also obliterate my fantasy team with David Lee and Crawford…

  • NBK

go to espn jukai it is the alert in red

  • RV

Harrington isn’t going to screw up gallinari, he’ll only be a knick for this year and next and gallinari ain’t doing anything this year even with 48 minutes of playing time. Next year he won’t deserve big minutes either. Accorind to the Warriors, they plan on playing crawford next to Monta when he returns, and will play the 1 for now. At least that’s what they’re hoping to do.

  • RV

Jukai, I get screwed with morrow too …AND with Monta…

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Yeah—so six of the Warriors best seven players are guards and guards forced to play the 3 and 4. And we got no true PG. There HAVE to be more trades in the offing, right? Maybe a few months down the line? Of course, if Monta comes back hobbled, this trade will make a lot more sense. I can’t think about that possibility without dying inside though, so let’s not.

  • NBK

So the Knicks got a guy to take minutes away from the 6th pick in the draft for two years so they can get rid of him in the future and this is not going to effect Gallinari’s progress? Even if they traded for someone that plays the same position as Danilo wouldn’t they want someone who is going to show him the ropes not a guy who is going to launch 300 3′s?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Why the hell the Knicks give up Crawford?!

  • NBK

Donnie Walsh has Harrington-icantgetenoughofyou syndrome that’s the problem. I understand the trade from a financial stand point but it would have made more sense to trade jamal crawford for say Chris Kaman then Al Harrington.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Oh well, Crawford will average 30 points a game in GS. If he ever gets the ball that is.

  • RV

NBK, it takes two to make a trade, so they have to get what they can to clear up cap space, cant be picky…..and Gallinari is pretty much done for the year, so next year he’ll be back as a rookie once again, which means harrington isn’t taking anything from him this year and next year, Harrington or no harrington, he’ll still won’t be ready for big minutes.

  • RV

they are just going to have a bunch of guys averaging about 13 pts a game, one day Morrow will score like 26 and Jackson 13, then they switch the next game and so on with the rest.

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

    malik rose or crawford???

  • NBK

Ok taking Harrington out of the equation it is still a bad trade for NY—-Their SG position is in a sticky situation Wilson Chandler is going to be there starting 2? And first off the bench for him? Chris Duhon and Nate Robinson on the court at the same time does not make sense, and how are they going to gaurd the more athletic 2′s in the league now? Kobe might score 81 on the Knicks (just kidding) but they really can’t gaurd a quick 2. I feel like the Harrington trade effectively took them out of the playoff picture this year, and maybe next year depending on what happens but maybe that is all part of the plan.

  • RV

as i check the salary figures, the Rockets have a lot more cap space in 2010 than the knicks…i didn’t think they’d be in the mix for Lebron…but i guess they may have a small chance. I thought NY had cleared more space than this though…guess not…

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

    Terrible….

  • RV

    Crawford

  • RV

NBK, from what i read on ESPN, it pretty much sounds like they realized they were screwing up the present in exchange for a better future

  • NBK

RV you have to take into account that the Knicks will rid themselves of some bad contracts they are stuck with like Curry and Randolph (i don’t know who’s contract lasts past 2010 but one does) They will get rid of it by then. Thats over 10 million off of whatever they are at.

  • Pingback: SLAM ONLINE | » Knicks To (Officially) Deal Crawford For Al Harrington

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Why would LeBron WANT to go to a Knicks team this bad again? Because it’s in New York? It’d have to be a LOT better in two years.

  • dubsfan

Its funny about all yall saying NY got the better deal, look now…we’re gittin Crawford, NYs highest scorer. And for those who doubt, we got a rotation with Monta, Jax, Magette, Dre (Biedrins), Buke and a sleeper in A-Mo (he’ll take ROY).

  • RV

dubsfan, i dont think anyone is saying NY got a better deal, we just know WHY they made the deal, but we are not sure why the Warriors did it.

  • RV

NBK, i’m sure the knicks will eventually get much more under the cap, but for all the lebron-to-Ny talk, i figured they had already cleared more space than this and it just surprised me the rockets were so much lower, yet you don’t really hear much about Houston and the 2010 FA class.

  • NBK

It makes less sense for the warriors then anyone else. It may help the Warriors win 5 more games then they would have but they are still going to struggle and Crawford screws their future. They are not making the playoffs regardless

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

Malik Rose?!! Why him, of all people?? Err… They could’ve at least gotten someone better. Quite an odd trade…

  • NBK

RV thats true the Knicks chances at landing LeBron don’t look as plausible as they are made out too be. I think one team nobody has really talked about in the LeBron sweepstakes is LAL, they have extra money and will have room under the cap in 2010, it kind of depends if LeBron wants money or wins because dallas and LA are the best places for him to win a title immediately.
