Vinny Del Negro’s Office Doesn’t Have a Suggestions Box

by Marcel Mutoni

That’s what Ben Gordon and Luol Deng recently found out after voicing their opinions about what the team should (and shouldn’t) be doing. Vinny Del Negro reminded the two players that it’s his show, and they’ll just have to come along for the ride.

Following a disheartening loss to the Cavs, Gordon and Deng called for changes to the Bulls’ strategy, but their coach wasn’t having any of it. From the Sun-Times:

”No, no, no; they’re the players, I’m the coach,” Del Negro said.

”The good teams in this league stick together,” Del Negro continued. ”The good teams fight and figure out ways to get better every day. And they’re good teammates. When you trust your teammates and when you trust the system, your chances of success go up dramatically. We’re trying to do that here, and we have a long way to go with that.”

The Bulls, at 2-3, aren’t exactly playing inspired basketball these days. Team defense seems like an afterthought, and on offense, guys are going for theirs when the going gets tough.

Though it’s important for a coach to establish some form of control over the players, it might not hurt for Vinny to listen to them a bit - “his way” hasn’t exactly produced the desired results thus far.

They’re complaining cause his way has never worked. This is his first gig why should they trust something they haven’t seen work yet. Oh yeah first!

  • Yknot Posted: Nov.7 at 11:04 am
    second?

  • jay Posted: Nov.7 at 11:07 am
the bulls are a bloody mess that only Michael Jordan can fix. Get michael in there as GM or coach!!! (free sarcasm included)

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.7 at 11:12 am
If only they had their old, nice, understanding, always-listening coach back from last year, none of this would be happening!

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.7 at 11:18 am
    5 games in! WOW.

  • Ken Posted: Nov.7 at 11:30 am
    LOL @ Jukai

  • adams Posted: Nov.7 at 11:33 am
So, what’s the worse investment: Deng + Gordon or Brand + Iguodala? Or Rashard Lewis?

  • Diesel Posted: Nov.7 at 11:46 am
So its Vinny’s offensive scheme that makes Ben Gordon chuck up horrible shot after horrible shot? Damn that Vinny D.

  • RV Posted: Nov.7 at 12:12 pm
once the players start having problems with EVERY SINGLE coach they’ve had, its time to move the players..

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.7 at 12:33 pm
I have a suggestion for Vinny: QUIT.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.7 at 12:33 pm
Also, John Paxson could use a good firing. I’ve had it.

  • mike Posted: Nov.7 at 12:34 pm
Suggestion: Vinny should bet a haircut over a video game outcome.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.7 at 12:46 pm
Rose is the only bright spot for them thus far. I’m glad someone else grabbed Tyrus after that one big game in my fantasy league. The Bulls really don’t have any chemistry, or players who complement each other.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.7 at 12:49 pm
They should’ve never brought Ben Gordon back. He seems like a good dude away from basketball but he can’t guard my lil’ sister and he’s constantly b!tching about the coaching or the organization. Tall price to pay for a undersized jumpshooter.

  • Diggy Posted: Nov.7 at 12:51 pm
Its time to shake this team up!

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Nov.7 at 1:00 pm
Enjoy the lottery. Not the draft lottery, but the one where they stone you to death.

  • Chris Ujma Posted: Nov.7 at 1:05 pm
i like this story. Now that they are repping the U.K they obviously feel that to integrate, they have to adopt the British way and complain about bloody everything. Next week; long queues in the lay-up line at practice

  • phil Posted: Nov.7 at 2:15 pm
Well the Bulls season just ended.

  • shabazz Posted: Nov.7 at 2:30 pm
the only reason why sefalosha is starting is becaue pasxson likes him. the offense they are running is horiible and del negro needs to implemetn a new starting lineup.

  • Cizzo Posted: Nov.7 at 3:25 pm
I wonder if Jordan,Pippen,Grant,or Kukoc got to express themsevles withouth being muzzled???????????????????????????

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.7 at 4:28 pm
Is Vinny aware he’s only coached five more regular-season games than either Deng or Gordon?

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.7 at 4:37 pm
Hey Russ, Phil’s not walking through that door.

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.7 at 4:37 pm
Avery or Paul Silas should though.

  • DD Posted: Nov.7 at 4:57 pm
Its not about the coach, its about the players. kirk hinrich has lost his touch and is averaging lower numbers that derek fisher!!! Ben gordon can score but is too small to guard anyone. Unless they start trading both of these players, then they might have a shot at a title…

  • what Posted: Nov.7 at 5:35 pm
    Haaahahahahahaah great comment Mo Charlo

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Nov.7 at 5:59 pm
I love how so many people make sweeping proclamations about a team, or how a season will turn out after 5 games. Everyone knows (or should know) that there will be several plot-twists to every season. I hope they don’t make all the rest of their life decisions with such incomplete information.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Nov.7 at 6:04 pm
cuz its not like deng and gordon have been there for a few years and vinny just started coaching(ON ANY LEVEL!) OH WAIT

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Nov.7 at 6:16 pm
What good decisions have Gordon and Deng made. Players are supposed to show up and play. Nothing Gordon and Deng have done this year constitutes “showing up” in my estimation.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.7 at 10:52 pm
The Bulls are the Knicks 0.5?

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.7 at 10:54 pm
Maybe I’m going a bit far here, but meh.

  • terence Posted: Nov.7 at 11:40 pm
give the ball to d. rose period. he should be the playing coach! the bulls will be a lottery again. the sucks. they got overrated players in deng, gordon and many stupid draft and coach.

  • DD Posted: Nov.7 at 11:41 pm
don’t compare the bulls and the knicks. the bulls at least have some undeveloped decent talent (gordon, hinrich, rose) but the knicks have a serious lack of talent (marbury, curry, randolph). The bulls can go somewhere but they need to rid of hinrich and get a decent small forward. ’nuff said

  • Roy Posted: Nov.8 at 12:50 am
the bulls better hire a REAL COACH… one that can turn the team around and get some W’s… sorry Vinny… the Bulls need CHANGE…. :D

  • Chukaz Posted: Nov.8 at 2:27 am
Obama should coach the Bulls. Right now, they need change. I have no idea why the hired Vinny. WTF has he ever done to deserve to coach a professional basketball team? He’s lost his players 5 games into the season. I’m pretty sure that if Gregg Popob*tch and Phil Jackson got suggestions from their players, specially from some of their top players, they would lisen, but what do they know about winning…

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Nov.8 at 1:07 pm
I’ve been a Bulls fan since ‘86 or ‘87 and I’m on the verge of giving up.

  • Caleb Posted: Nov.8 at 2:04 pm
Yeah chukaz but pop and phil actually *have* “top players.”

  • 007 Posted: Nov.8 at 4:45 pm
    this is ridiculous..bulls problem
    1. great drafts & bad player movement- gave up brand, chandler 2. bad player management- saturated at pg. & sg. no decent big men( atlest 1 shotblocker). only gooden there 4 rebounding. Soln. free gordon for 1 decent big along wit hughes
bulls shud b running team wit rose, nocioni, deng, thomas, gooden
2nd five: heinrich, sefolosha, gray, and hu ever is left plus maybe mcdyess.

  • Peter Robert Casey Posted: Nov.8 at 10:12 pm
Participatory management works. It engages the players. What’s he thinking?

  • underdog Posted: Nov.9 at 6:30 am
It’s funny how almost anybody can be coach in the NBA nowadays.

  • KA Posted: Nov.9 at 10:57 am
vinny del Negro is still an awesome name after all these years. what a sucky environment to bring up rose.

  • 007 Posted: Nov.9 at 11:48 am
    common sense = rare commodity

  • Rod Fillmore Posted: Nov.9 at 11:56 pm
Well, if this doesn’t work out for Vinny he can go do infomercials for Flowbee.

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.10 at 8:32 pm
    Cizzo says:

    _______________________________________________
Sure did….Pippen sat out of final plays in tight games…Rodman wouldnt sit on the bench or stay away from Las Vegas and Kukoc pretended not to understand english…6 championships later though it didnt really matter.

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.10 at 8:34 pm
and MJ….dang….if there was ANYONE who strayed from the triangle offense it was that wreckless, offensive minded ball hog who always made sure he went for his….. ha.
VINNY THE BLACK WISHES HE WAS HALF AS GOOD AS PHIL JACKSON.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.11 at 7:07 am
Vinny’s in over his head. If he had a bunch of rooks and was coaching in say.. Oklahoma or Memphis, he might be able to guide the team to a nice lottery pick. Instead he’s got a grumpy undersized 2 in Gordon, a confused SF in Deng, a hothead in F/C Thomas, and Hinrich on the bench for a month or more. At least Rose is fun to watch.

  • larry lalonde Posted: Dec.31 at 3:27 pm
OK listen, I am the biggest bulls fan and most knowledgeable about the club. I’ve been silent until now, but they are getting embarrased by Orlando right now and I’ve had enough. This is what the bulls need to do to make the playoffs this year. (barring a trade)
First rule is no outside shots for anyone until they have taken it to the hole 4 times. Also, Tyrus Thomas should be barred from taking any outside shot until he can shoot over 43% from the outside. He should be a Dennis Rodman for us. Derrick Rose is our best player. He still needs to be more aggressive especially when the rest of the team is screwing up. Now, they must throw the ball in low to Aaron Gray and isolate him much, much more… 20-30 times a game. I know he is slow, but he is strong and has solid posts moves and passes great out of the double team. It would get the other bigs in foul trouble, it would open up the outside shots for our guards, and he would score a double double every night, I guarantee it. Well I could go on and on. See ya guys, GO BULLS!!
