Walsh-D’Antoni-Marbury Have Their Chat, Resolve Nothing

by Marcel Mutoni

What, you were expecting something else?

The only thing that came out of the meeting, apparently, is the possibility that Walsh doesn’t agree with D’Antoni’s decision to not give Marbury any playing time at all. In fact, Donnie seemed completely unaware that Steph wouldn’t see the floor in the season opener, and had no say in him being listed as inactive thereafter.

From the NY Daily News:

When questioned on the logic behind not playing Marbury since he is on the roster, healthy and under contract, Walsh replied: “That’s the whole point. That’s the whole point. I would agree with that.”

“The issue is he’s not playing and you guys are asking me,” Walsh told reporters. “I want to understand why and I want (to ask) our coach (why). If he’s got valid reasons, that’s one thing. If not … that’s what we’re talking about.”

The Knicks simply never cease to amaze, do they?

Because they can’t get their act together, the Players’ Union is now thinking of intervening in this mess. Good luck with that.

    —.. .. .

  • Cupcake

My spanish teacher almost caught me on here. That wouldn’t have been good.
But, seriously they should let him play, duhon doesn’t look good.

  • http://breadcity.wordpress.com Jake

Everybody just needs to get caught up in life.

  • Static

So you mean Steph’s new workout plan was for nothing?!? Cmon, we know he’d work in this offense cuz he isn’t shy about shooting… you’re already paying the man, so now start playing the man

  • http://breadcity.wordpress.com Jake

Oh yeah, and this isn’t little league. If D’Antoni thinks the team can become better long-term by playing without Marbury, that’s a valid enough reason to bench him, in my opinion.

  • rand33p

what is the players union gonna do? .. coach dont wanna play him then coach dont play him.. GM can step in but wtf is the players union gonna do?

  • Cupcake

I don’t think the player’s union can do anything.

  • Basketballologist

@Jake- You’re right, this is beginning to look like little league where its in the rules that everybody has to play sometime in the first three quarters. The Knicks fans just need to realize that D’Antoni is this coach and he might know what he’s doing. Which is why he is the coach?

  • Diggy

They should give steph a ten game trial. Or have steph and duhon have a knife fight…

  • Mendel

Hey SLAM, do the rest of the country a favor and keep all this daily news and ny post tabloid/drama crap over ther in NYC and not bother us with it.

  • Rob

GIVE HIM A CHANCE. If he’s good he plays if not go from there. Its funny how the knicks aren’t in any rush do fix this even though their just paying him $20+ million to watch their games…..

  • riggs

hey mendel guess where slam is located?

  • John D

    LMAO at Jake’s first comment.

  • http://AllAbout-Penis-Enlargement.com Jukai

What the hell would/could the players league do? Absolutely nothing, to my knowledge.

  • underdog

    They can strike for Steph…:)

to jake’s 2nd comment, its never a good reason 4 benchin a player that ur payin 21.9 mil 4 in his last season, they better get wut they can get out of him…STEPH is still fully capable of puttin up @ least 20 and 8..u got players gettin payed way less with far less talent than MARBURY gettin way more minutes which is absolutely ridiculuos…and they havent even given da man a real chance 2 show wut he’s got!!!…now dnt get me wrong, i think steph and the knicks need 2 go seperate ways but as long as he’s on the team he should be playin…as far as i’m concerned its still sum tension btwn steph and coach d’anton and its all coming down 2 personal beefs…

i just realized i spelled RIDICULOUS wrong…lol…pardon the misspelling

  • Mendel

I know exactly where ther located and I mean exactly. What I’m saying is leave that thit behind on the train or in the taxi, for those with basball book deals and might find the train beneth them these days.

  • Jesse G

On a different note, has anyone seen the new nash videos? They are hilarious

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    The Knicks . . . (sigh).

  • http://www.lifehoopsthoughts.blogspot.com the baconator

My sentiments exactly Moose. Walsh pretty much summed up all of the Knicks’ problems in that talk. It’s all a bunch of words with no actions behind them. They said they’d make big changes over the summer, bringing in a new GM, coach, and pg. Yet they wasted a draft pick on a position they already have talent at and are entering this year with virtually the same roster and skill level as last year. I’m at the point where I say, let Marbury play. When he was with Phoenix he averaged around 8 dimes, which isn’t bad at all. Worry about cutting him next season, but right now focus on having a quality pg, which Marbury is

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Baconator, you read my new stuff on Hibachi 2.0? If you haven’t, read it.

  • http://www.ngunioamosotho.com Nguni

anyone that has seen the knicks play the past 2-3 years knows not to say they shud play Marbury. At the beginning of every year, he says the same crap, then they suck. D’Antoni knows what he is doing. Waive his ass cuz he is not good in the locker room, and doesn’t play team ball.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i don’t get why marbury isn’t playing. is he that much of a team cancer that even though he’s getting the stats, he’s destroying the team at the same time? granted i haven’t seen the knicks play in a long a$$ time, but i’d love to hear why he should remain on the bench because the team is better off with him as a spectator. Russ?

  • witness

why doesnt marbury just go to italy already?

  • http://www.lifehoopsthoughts.blogspot.com the baconator

Moose, that was amazing. I just commented on it. Sorry I didn’t get an earlier chance; our school f***ing bans pretty much all non-educational websites. Anyone who hasn’t read it yet has to!

  • starbury&stevey

@Jesse,great stuff…!steve is beter than MJ

Now if Mike D was benching Steph to build for the future, I’d understand. BUT IT’S FREAKING DUHON AND COLLINS RUNNING THE SHOW. Duhon is a career back-up and Collins is a borderline NBA player. This is just silly now, play the dude or trade him already. You win with talent in the L. Isn’t it the coach’s job to make your players play up to their potential. Steph seems to be very docile and coachable these days, try him out. Can’t be worse than Duhon.

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

seems this scenario of Starbury with the Knicks is getting worse already. I think the Knicks should just waive him and let him play for another team if they no longer need his ball playing skills. I’m still wondering why Donnie Walsh is still hesitating on waiving Marbury… oh well, the plot thickens… :D

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

yo moose, great blog. just commented on your latest write-up. :D

  • Rocklet

This is ridiculous. Y’all are the same people who spent last year complaining about him ruining the team and now the MSG want him on the floor! People need to get their minds right…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    Thanks, Roy. Check it regularly!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    play the damn fool.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The Knicks should move to Seattle.

Wherever Steph goes, I’m following. I’ve lost all respect for this organization.

  • Young Chris MP3

Diggy wins with the 1:45 comment

  • Basketballologist

I’m sure that D’Antoni is seeing something in practice that is making him bench Steph. If he’s really that great and has really changed so much then he can prove that at practice and work his way from there. Who cares if you are paying him $20+ mil, if he’s not helping he’s hurting therefore he gets to receive “pine therapy” like any other player.

  • chintao

I’m sure that D’Antoni is basing his decision purely on animus. Fire D’Antoni. Also, somebody buy Donnie Walsh some No-Doz and a newspaper and put it on his desk every morning. He was unaware that Steph wouldn’t see the floor in the opener? He had no say in Marbury being listed as inactive?

  • chintao

As the Knicks keep losing, it will be interesting to see if D’Antoni can withstand the pressure. Also, Russ, be careful. Teddy-the-Bear pitches a hissy-fit everytime he hears Seattle and Knicks.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

LMFAO @ chintao: “Fire D’Antoni”. Your dumb @ss doesn’t seem to understand that Mike D’Antoni is an actual COACH that my Knicks have been missing all these years. So please, close your sh!tty trap. Thanks.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Anyways on a side note: Donnie Walsh is really an idiot if he finally hires a REAL coach — who can immensely improve our team — and backtracks the first few decisions he makes. Come on, step it up!

  • RaN

Steph,Steph he’s our man if he can’t do it the knicks won’t

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com/ Hersey

So glad I’m not a Knicks fan. Let me get this straight… Marbury is the team’s highest paid player with an expiring $21 million contract. The team doesn’t want to play him to build for the future. They also don’t want to waive him or buy him out because there is a chance one of their top three guards (which doesn’t include the former All Star) gets injured. Right… Marbury is now the highest paid member of D’Antoni’s Fitness Club.

  • Froggiestyle

    Obama Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Hersey: You didn’t get it straight.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=627550406 KA

    lol at jake. free steph!

  • Nashty

ship his ass out to Italy….

  • And the Survey

He is the most talented player on the Knicks and there is literally no sensible reason, without being hypocritical(want to rebuild? Then why play Malik Rose!), NOT to play STEPH!

  • chintao

Wow, Teddy. Lay off the Kool-Aid, son. Watch this season. The Knicks will beat the Bobcats, Sacramento, Miami, and they might luck-up against a few other teams; however, this will be a 30-win season, at best. In fact, I think that 25 wins is more realistic.
