Would McDyess Have A Better Chance In Cleveland?

by Ryne Nelson

Antonio McDyess demaned a buyout in Denver because he wants a championship. Plain and simple. Ask mostly anyone, and you’ll hear McDyess will return to Detroit.

But other attractive suitors have stepped into the conversation. The Cavs hope to pry McDyess away from Detroit’s grasp during the obligatory 30-day waiting period, offering a better chance to win a title. From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

According to a league source, the Cavs were in touch with McDyess soon after his buyout became finalized Monday.

But their efforts will have to be in the standings, not just the balance sheet. Just offering the veteran forward the most money, which they may be able to do, isn’t likely going to be the difference.

The 34-year-old forward may already have his mind made up, but it’s possible the Pistons’ recent travails might have him listening to offers more intently than before. If the Cavs do offer McDyess more money than the Pistons, they could become a very serious destination come Dec. 7, when MyDyess is allowed to sign a free-agent contract.

Then again, McDyess could be fielding offers to mask what seems like a pre-arranged deal to return to the Pistons. In that case, Cleveland would be nothing more than a pawn on the board. Yet, as we all know, there’s always a chance to win when you still have your King.

he aint going to cleveland. Boston or Detroit. More likely Detroit. He is comfortable there and they have a chance.

  • Nguni Posted: Nov.12 at 10:36 am
    Uno!

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.12 at 10:37 am
I like it when a player “demaned” something.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.12 at 10:38 am
    Pawn.

  • Co Co Posted: Nov.12 at 10:39 am
Him and LeBron could pass for brothers or at least cousins.

  • neaorin Posted: Nov.12 at 10:46 am
All that I’ve read on the subject seems to indicate his unwillingness to pack up and move again. He’s going back to Det.

  • Deuce21 Posted: Nov.12 at 10:49 am
Where ever McDyess ends up that team will win the whole thing……yeah I said it!

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.12 at 10:51 am
And as usual, we disregard what you said, Deuce21

  • Henry Posted: Nov.12 at 11:06 am
    nice play on words

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.12 at 11:08 am
    Joe Smith 2.0

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.12 at 11:08 am
But Joe Smith was a BEAST with them, so i like the move for McDyess

  • Edmond Posted: Nov.12 at 11:13 am
hahaha dice will still play for the pistons.

  • Fredo Posted: Nov.12 at 11:29 am
I’ll be selfish, but true: If he goes to New Orleans, he’d ride a team that’s on the upswing and not be asked to do more than he has done for Motown. Go play with Chris Paul and DX!!!

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.12 at 11:30 am
    To answer the question: NO.

  • Cheryl Posted: Nov.12 at 11:51 am
If he REALLY wants a ring, I say go to Boston. If he REALLY doesn’t want to relocate again, then Detroit’s the place. Does he have little kids? If so, I understand the relocation issue, though I’d still think Boston’s a better place.

  • JO Posted: Nov.12 at 11:54 am
The Cavs are set. Some players just like to play for money and not a championship. That will be dice for the rest of his career.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.12 at 12:08 pm
JO: What a dumb thing to say. Dice doesn’t play for the money; he craves a championship more than any other Piston, other than maybe AI. The man cried and wouldn’t talk to anyone weeks after the Pistons lost to the Spurs in the ‘05 Finals. If he just wanted money, he wouldn’t have taken a buyout and left $8+ mil on the table in Denver.

  • RV Posted: Nov.12 at 12:16 pm
Cheryl, i think he makes his home in Houston, so i’m not sure how much relocation really matters. Not sure about the kids though.

  • Keith Posted: Nov.12 at 12:21 pm
In answer to the question: Yes. Followed by no because no-one but the Lakers and Celtics are getting to the finals again this year.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.12 at 12:23 pm
Keith has it figured out. Guess I can cancel my League Pass.

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.12 at 12:40 pm
    TAD
I think Keith would have a strong bet if he wagered on a Celtics vs. Lakers rematch. Both teams have clearly been the best in the league and they are also two of the most stable teams in the league.
Right now, I would wager on a Celtics/Lakers rematch, but I’m hoping the Pistons gel fast and Iverson carries them to the Finals.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.12 at 1:01 pm
I’ll wager a Cleveland/Lakers matchup Allenp. The Celts just have not impressed.

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.12 at 1:25 pm
@jukai i would piggyback that bet myself..i think with losing jamies posey and pj brown boston just doesnt have the same defense its still impressive but not a kobe stopper..as for mcydess he can go back to the d he still aint winning….i think he doesnt feel like moving.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.12 at 1:45 pm
I unnderstand all of that, but that is why it’s an 82 game season and not a 7 game season. Injuries, losing streaks, hot players, tempermental coaches, players unhappy with playing time, trades, etc. happen every year. Sorry, it’s just Laker faithful (not all, but most) are smug and act like it’s only their team that matters. It just makes me hate them more, and I LOVE this game as a whole.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.12 at 1:46 pm
I think he’d be a good fit in Cleveland, we’ll see. The fact that the Nuggets sy=tillbought him out after Birdman and KMart get hurt does make this whole thing look even more fishy though.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.12 at 1:49 pm
Man, do Lakers fans not remeber how easily it can all slip away? There’s no franchise in sports that I root against as much. I just want their fans to suffer. They, honestly, deserve it.

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.12 at 1:53 pm
@ciolkstar go lakers!!!..@tadone well you can undoubtly say that thier not a great team what its becoming is what it once was over there…and i believe that they have they mental toughness to beat the bean bag boys..

  • Breeze Posted: Nov.12 at 1:53 pm

  • John W. Davis Posted: Nov.12 at 2:24 pm
BLASPHEMOUS! No really, he could go there. He wants to win a championship. I wouldn’t but the Celtics passed him because he didnt want to play in Denver because one they sucked two because they traded him away to horrible Knicks.

  • Z Posted: Nov.12 at 2:38 pm
I think that Cleveland is coming out the East. I would REALLY like a 3-man rotation of Dice, Andy and Z. (Ben starts for show and not to hurt his feelings, he’s a sensitive dude). They can always get help at the deadline for Wally Z’s expiring contract, Mike Redd?

    Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . . Boston . . .

    Come to the ATL Dice!

  • Allenp Posted: Nov.12 at 4:29 pm
Jukai, if Boston hasn’t impressed, then what do you call Cleveland’s performance so far. It actually looks like that supporting cast got worse. Lebron is still Lebron, but what have they added?
And Boston has impressed me so far. Defense is still great and the bench is playing much better.

  • TADOne Posted: Nov.12 at 4:47 pm
The Cavs haven’t impressed me, but they are 6-2. Go figure. LeBron is good at basketball.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.12 at 5:36 pm
Allenp: Delonte West, Anderson Varejo, and Daniel Gibson have improved. Mo Charles is exceding my expectations (he isn’t the Scottie Pippen everyone was hoping for, but I figured he’d be a ball-hog to Lebron James, and he’s a good 15 ppg player who can actually CREATE when James isn’t in), Wally World is getting used to the offense, and if you haven’t noticed, Lebron is pretty good.

  • Jukai Posted: Nov.12 at 5:38 pm
but more to the point, there is a fire when the Cavs play. Boston is sort of going through the motions. Maybe during playoff time, their fire will be rekindled, but it seems they just play poor basketball hoping that one of the Big Three will catch on fire. They still are a great defensive team but I haven’t really SEEN team basketball out of the Celtics camp yet.
The Cavs are also deeper than the Celts.

why doesnt he go to the Lakers or the Spurs?? - both Championship quality team which need a guy like him to back up their frontline

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.12 at 5:48 pm
Suns will upset Lakers in Western Conference finals with their Amare, Shaq, Diaw, MCDYESS combo!! (and then take Cleveland in 6 games in the finals!)
Shaq will get his final ring, Nash his first and Amare MVP award…
    :)

Sorry but the Spurs wont be anywhere NEAR the playoffs this year.

  • Samaki Walker Posted: Nov.12 at 7:10 pm
Dyess just left around 9 mil on the table when buying out his contract. He is 34 years old. You think he gives 2 $hits about the difference between 6 mil and 1.5 mil?

  • Juscheckin Posted: Nov.12 at 7:35 pm
Why would he have a better chance in Cleveland then in Detroit or Boston? I mean that question is just silly. And no the CAVS are not deeper then the Celts or Detroit.

  • Juscheckin Posted: Nov.12 at 7:45 pm
Also, I love how people are just totally looking over Detroit as if they have changed so much since Iverson got there. They still basically have the same defense with more fire power and once that team gels and starts to click on all cylinders and starts those spot ups with AI and Rip, and the pick and rolls with Sheed…the Pistons are going to be a problem. Prince has been on a roll since Iverson got there. The only team that I think will be competetive with them is Boston again. The thing with Boston is that they are really good at shutting down the opposing teams star players. They did it last year with Kobe and Lebron, and did it the othernight with Iverson…but what happens if/when Rip and Prince start going off? Exactly. Im not saying that Detroit is a shoe-in to win it all…but people shouldn’t disregard them either. Please just stop with the hate already. The Pistons also need McDyess back in the post anyway..he might as well go back to his team (that is already a contender) where he is comfortible and will play a larger role then he would anywhere else.

  • Coach G Posted: Nov.12 at 8:13 pm
Dyess has done a damage to the Cavs in recent years/would be great to have him dishing it out for the Cavs. He would more than fill that little Joe Smith, hole. Might cut minutes of LBJ the at the 4, but I say roll the Dyess! Let the Coronation begin!

  • Dacre Posted: Nov.12 at 8:34 pm
They have basically the same defense…?? I stopped reading after that.

  • Juscheckin Posted: Nov.12 at 9:59 pm
You can stop reading all you want…the fact of the matter is that while Chancy is a better defender then Iverson, the rest of the players are still the same..some of you people act as if Detroit traded off the entire team. They need time just like any other team to get their defensive sets together and chemistry in order to know where eachother is and they should be fine. Bottomline. Maybe you should have stopped typing after saying that the Suns will upset the Lakers, I doubt that even with McDyess…and Cleveland in the Finals? Goodbye. SMH

  • The Promise Posted: Nov.12 at 11:17 pm
Well put Juscheckin. And, I would be shocked if Mcdyess dont go back to Detroit.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.12 at 11:29 pm
Why would Dice go back to the Pistons? Dumars has begun the rebuilding for 2010.
I’d bet only Stuckey is safe. Maybe Prince and Maxiell. Everyone else will go in the firesale.

  • ballinpro24 Posted: Nov.13 at 12:52 am
Dice isn’t good enough of a player to demand sh!t. He’s still lucky that he is even playing!!!!

  • henry Posted: Nov.13 at 3:04 am
