Yao’s Hilarious Struggles at the Rim Continue

Judging by his failed (and repeated) attempts to dunk the ball of late, you’d have a hard time believing Yao is actually close to 8 feet tall.

Isn’t this supposed to be his team and everything? Check out TMac.

  • Ken Posted: Nov.6 at 11:42 am
According to SLAM, he just needs to cut his hair and everything will be fine.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Nov.6 at 11:43 am
Holy guacamole. This dude should never, ever be sprited. I can dunk better than Yao.

  • namik Posted: Nov.6 at 11:56 am
Give TMac the ball and get to defending and rebounding Yao. The team would be better off.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Nov.6 at 12:05 pm
Anything that gives us an excuse to listen to Skee-Lo a good has to be a good thing.

  • underdog Posted: Nov.6 at 12:06 pm
I think we can call this a shame.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Nov.6 at 12:10 pm
Good lord, though. I hadn’t watched those clips until just now. Re: Hops, my man makes Larry Bird look like Nate Robinson.

  • KA Posted: Nov.6 at 12:26 pm
    finger roll it big man!

  • k.o. Posted: Nov.6 at 12:38 pm
thats pathetic. his vertical is about what, 1/2 an inch?

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Nov.6 at 12:58 pm
but…. but…. if he just reaches out he can (almost) touch the rim right? What’s the problem here?

  • Diggy Posted: Nov.6 at 1:08 pm
    Here’s an idea: JUMP!

  • Diggy Posted: Nov.6 at 1:08 pm
And ofcourse he’ll be a starter on the all-star team again…

  • namik Posted: Nov.6 at 1:24 pm
Gerard, I’ve seen a picture of him dunking two handed on tip toe. Or I think thats what it was. Sure looked like it. Anyway, he was barely jumping. This is mind boggling.

  • Z Posted: Nov.6 at 1:25 pm
Yao is a failure. There, I said it. He’s marginally better than Rik Smits in his prime. We even had to scale back the expectations. Great Wall, he is not.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 1:29 pm
If this was a test on critical thinking, the majority of you would fail.

  • Z Posted: Nov.6 at 2:09 pm
RV, regardless of his failed dunk attempts, can you actually refute anything that I’ve said?

  • ciolkstar Posted: Nov.6 at 2:10 pm
Seriously! there’s no excuse for front-rimming dunks when your 7-6. Its not like he was trying to dunk over people on those plays either. The phrase “can’t jump over his own untied shoelaces” comes to mind. Lil’ Nate packing him last year was one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

  • Joel O's Posted: Nov.6 at 2:28 pm
Aaand Rik Smits is a failure?

  • Kevin Wilson Posted: Nov.6 at 2:59 pm
So does Yao also want a 64 Impala?

  • witness Posted: Nov.6 at 3:03 pm
Its not his fault he was scared of kevin garnett. he is still the best player on this team.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.6 at 3:12 pm
that’s funny and sad at the same time. I bet it’s the weight of shouldering all chinese people that’s holding him down.

  • mike Posted: Nov.6 at 3:15 pm
Yao has had more excuses made for hium than any player ever in the NBA.. We are constantly having to be told how good he is because we obviously can’t see it for ourselves.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 3:16 pm
i can refute that he’s a failure. He’s only a failure in the eyes of those who expected him to become a russell, a Dream, an Abdul-jabbar. That was NEVER a realist expectation to have of him, but the guy is averaging about 20 and 10 and probably will keep doing it. How can that be considered failure? Say he didn’t meet people’s expectations, but don’t declare the man a fluke when he’s still easily a star. He’s averaging 20 and 10, over 50% FG, 83% FT, and 2 blocks a game. If that’s failure, then i’d give up everything I own to fail like that in the NBA.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 3:18 pm
Mike must live somewhere where stats and video are not available to the population.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Nov.6 at 3:37 pm
RV, you can’t argue with people if they don’t have the same definition. i’m sure you’ve been through enough of those “winner” debates around here. or the top 50 list.

  • Mike Posted: Nov.6 at 3:53 pm
You’re right. The videos of Yao dominating in a playoff series never made it wo where I live.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 4:07 pm
I guess everyone in the NBA who doesn’t dominate must suck. I’ll let the Hall of Fame know so they can kick out half of the people in there.

  • Mike Posted: Nov.6 at 4:20 pm
Yup, You got it. My point exactly. That’s my two groups of NBA players. The 3% who have dominated a playoff series and are therefore labeled “great.” And the remianing 97% are in the “suck” category. I know you’re a little sensitive about Yao missing a dunk. I felt the same way when the video of Kobe getting crossed appeared during the preseason.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 4:22 pm
Who was my man Kendrick Perkins absolutely OWN Yao when he was agains the Celtics??? And Perk is, ahem, EIGHT inches shorter than Ming.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 4:32 pm
Mike, Yao missing a dunk in a game the Rockets won, and missing a dunk in a game he was playing horribly all-around, bother me very little. I would have made my posts about those dunks if it was that big of a problem to me. Look at the nonsense that you wrote before accusing me of being sensitive. And if kobe getting crossed bothered you that much, then its obvious you’re not very objective, which explains the Yao hate.

  • speedy Posted: Nov.6 at 4:34 pm
I think he is a little to cautious after his injuries .

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 4:34 pm
    Tom Thibodeau Moose, Tom Thibodeau…

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 4:42 pm
I know it, RV. Dude’s the unsung hero behind our fantastic season last year. Unsung among the casual community, at least.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 4:45 pm
RV, Perk is little-known, and Yao is possibly the most well-known center in the league. Thibodeau is a great defensive coach, but Kendrick deserves cred for that awesome game. Totally shut him down. While being that much shorter and that much less-skilled than Yao Ming.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 4:46 pm
Oh, and RV: Have you read my new Hibachi 2.0 piece on Leon Powe?

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 5:07 pm
Perk is from here, so I’m familiar with him and think he’s talented, but I think Tom knows Yao as well as anyone in the league since he was a Rockets assistant before he went to Boston. He knows the perfect way to play Yao is by constantly having a body on him, and not by bumping him like guys like Chandler and Curry often do. Whoever was on Yao didn’t even give him an inch of space. Most guys bump Yao, and when Yao bounces off, he goes up for the shot and there’s no outside force on him. Boston stays right on him, even as he goes up, they “lean” on him, which disrupts Yao completely because he doesn’t have a lot of upper body strength. Perkins did it well, but since even KG was playing Yao like that I think it all goes back to Thibodeau, who probably showed them how to play Yao.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 5:13 pm
Thanks RV, I didn’t put two and two together about Thibodeau and Houston. Thanks for that.

  • BETCATS Posted: Nov.6 at 5:32 pm
He misses dunks, that is beyond said. But he can play, so stop the hate. Although this is the most pathetic thing i ever have seen, Yao can still ball, but it does prove my point of Yao being soft for his size.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.6 at 5:38 pm
Still, its a dunk. He should be able to make them. Even if his jumper/fallaway isnt going for him, then that should be a gimme.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 5:41 pm
Truth, Hursty. He should be dominating on those puny seven footers.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 5:45 pm
There was insane irony in my last comment . . .

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 6:03 pm
Hursty, don’t sweat it, Yao is never going to jump any higher because its actually painful for a guy his size. Just try dunking with force on a 6 foot rim. Other guys exert a force on the rim up high, then exert another force on the ground as they land, but with Yao, landing and dunking are not that far apart, so some of the force he puts on the dunk is going to transfer to his feet, so he’s going to feel even heavier when hitting the floor. So yeah, he’s always going to take a little hop, which means any little contact will throw him off. Against dallas he was pulled down which was enough to cause him to miss the dunk. Against Boston, it was just a bad play on his part, expecting more contact from Pierce like KG and Perk had been giving him, which he didn’t get.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 6:14 pm
Should of said on a 6 foot NBA-style breakaway rim, those with springs absorb the shock so its not so bad..

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 6:20 pm
He, RV and Hursty, read the comments on Ryan Jones’ latest post about Kobe and Obama. My post was kinda obnoxious in a way, pardon that, but I would like you guys to participate.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 6:31 pm
Oh, and RV: You’re the fantasy dude, so can you help me out a little please? Here’s my team: Kevin Garnett
    Dwyane Wade
    Josh Smith
    Al Jefferson
    Samuel Dalembert
    Zydrunas Ilgauskas
    Emeka Okafor
    Gerald Wallace
    Derrick Rose
    OJ Mayo
    Michael Beasley
JR Smith/TJ Ford (not sure who to keep)
Kevin Martin First of all, should I keep JR or TJ? Also, I need serious help in the assists category, and the open guards include Ramon Sessions, Kirk Hinrich, Nate Robinson, Jameer Nelson, Beno Udrih, Raymond Felton, Chris Duhon and Louis Williams. Any advice for who I should pick up and who I should drop? A good three ball would be nice, too. Thanks a lot if you respond!

  • Yknot Posted: Nov.6 at 7:05 pm
Somebody call Wesley and Woody, Chinese men can’t jump!

  • ab_40 Posted: Nov.6 at 7:41 pm
the count is at 2 now? right his missed dunk. and don’t say he’s a terrible offensive player. He’s preaty good realy ask the guys in dallas haha.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.6 at 7:45 pm
ab, nobody’s doubting that. Dude averaged 25 ppg last year.

  • RV Posted: Nov.6 at 8:48 pm
KG, Wade, Smith, Jefferson, Dalembert, Z, Emeka, Wallace, Rose, and Martin are all keepers. Mayo is going to hurt your turnovers and FG%, but with a green light and 35+ mins a night, he’s always going to score well, hit 3s and get steals, so keep him. Beasley could be a possible drop. His numbers are solid, but it may be worth sacrificing his point/rebounds for someone with a better FG%. He’s avg 17, 7 and 45% FG, but you might be able to find someone who avg 12 and 6 with 50% + FG. Look at your statistical totals in you league, and based on them you can decide if the points/rebounds are worth sacrificing. As for Ford or Smith, Smith can out up bigger numbers, but is very inconsistent, keep Ford, you’ll know what you’re getting with him. As for the other guys, look at their game logs and go for whoever is consistently getting minutes with decent FG/FT %, assists wise, they’re all similar. Hinrich may have an edge, but he’s onmy team and he’s been inconsistent.

  • davidR Posted: Nov.6 at 9:57 pm
damn moose, with a team like that the league must not be that big?

  • Tommy Vercetti Posted: Nov.7 at 12:31 am
    that just looks sad.

  • mike Posted: Nov.7 at 1:44 am
too bad for Yao, he almost won the game tonight. somebody tell him not to leave so much time on the clock next time.

  • RV Posted: Nov.7 at 2:06 am
cus Mike carries a stopwatch with him when he balls…seriously though, that’s the one thing Yao did perfectly tonight and that’s what you choose to hate on? Give it up man, hate is nasty thing.

  • Moose Posted: Nov.7 at 7:06 am
Thanks a lot, RV. Got some stuff done.

  • Mike Posted: Nov.7 at 7:40 am
Actually, Yao did shoot the ball at the right time. The only reason there was time left was because Roy wisely fouled him with 0.8 seconds left. So, it’s not a matter of carrying a stop watch, which I’m sure is against the rules, but a matter of being able to negate fouls.

  • jay Posted: Nov.7 at 8:25 am
Yao is the most dominant player in the history of the game. There, I said it.

  • mike Posted: Nov.7 at 11:16 am
I’m finally convinced. Game tapes and stats never have convinced me of a player’s greatness. It is the passion of the people who defend the player that is the ultimate testament of a player’s worth. None of us would waste time arguing for a player we didn’t believe in.
