Agent: Ricky Rubio Likely To Skip 2009 Draft

by Ryne Nelson

According to Rubio’s agent, Germa’n González, “it is a real possibility” that the Spanish point guard will not declare for the upcoming 2009 NBA Draft.

The following is rough English translation, as González told to Marca, the Spanish nationwide daily sports newspaper:

“We do not want it to go like other players who have left very high in the Draft and soon they do not play. The Americans have become crazy to have players there as soon as possible. The decisions will be taken based on which the European market also provides.”

While González also said Rubio’s decision to remain in Europe is not final, Rubio’s € 6 million ($8.4 million USD) buyout could eventually cause him to stay. A complex renegotiation with DKV Joventut needs to occur in order to reduce the high costs (higher than even the salary of a no. 1 selection) of rescission.

Despite talks of being a Top 5 pick in June, worries about Rubio’s NBA-readiness will likely cause him to forgo the NBA for at least another year.

but the american guys are more often then not better and in most cases the ones that get all the pressure out of high school are succesfull. (The ones that go out of high school with no hopes of a lottery selection are ilinformed children that were not given proper advice by those close to them) Those like LeBron James, Kevin Garnet, Kobe Bryant, Jermaine O’Neal, Tracy McGrady, Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler, etc. were pressured by everyone around to go, and were guaranteed to go in the first round w/ guaranteed contracts (like ricky rubio would be) have had more success then the average player who goes to college for 2-4 years. Going to college to develope is not in any way a proven way to make a kid a better pro, (unless that kid is a below lottery level talent or has not matured physically). What I am saying is just because the UK does not put pressure on their young guys to go to the NBA does not mean they don’t do the exact same thing. I may be off by a little bit but i believe Ricky Rubio was 14 when he played his first PROFESSIONAL basketball game, and in the United States you can’t play in the top League until your 19. All of Europe puts just as much pressure on a person to go professional but European ball in general does not put pressure on individual success and that is the difference between the UK and the US.

And if Ricky Rubios agent represents other players in Euro League I bet he would like the teams to trust him as an agent who is not screwing their club out of money because their is no way staying in the euroleague for another year will not make more money for DKV then if Ricky left and they received his buyout. And if Ricky is not loosing money, and DKV is not loosing money, my bet is during these tough financial times his Agent is not loosing money. (I say this because I believe I read Ricky’s family and Ricky do not plan on trying to make a marketing brand out of his career.) If thats the case then Germa’n González has no money to lose by keeping him in Europe.

No need to rush coming to the Memphis and forming a 3 head future monster with Rudy Gay and Oj Mayo that would lose 50 games a year for 4 years.
