Breaking: Kevin McHale To Coach Wolves

In the midst of for possibly the worst season in Timberwolves history, Kevin McHale has been recirculated to the sidelines. Former head coach Randy Whittman, as you’ve intuited, was shown his pink slip.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune has more:

The Timberwolves fired head coach Randy Wittman this morning and replaced him with Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale, but the big news out of Target Center is that McHale will relinquish his front-office duties to concentrate on coaching.

A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon. We’ll have to wait to hear why Glen Taylor can’t seem to point the finger at McHale for the team’s sustained failure.

Who will take over for McHale as team VP though? Hoiberg is the most likely replacement. The two were of different philosophies in the past (he was in favor of Mayo over Love),so we’ll see where this leads.

It’s still possible that McHale returns to the front office at the end of the season, but this move gives hope for real change in Minnesota.

    Good luck 32. McHale’s the man. He helped us win a few titles, gave us KG for a bunch of losers (except Big Al of course) and hopefully we’ll get Corey Brewer and Randy Foye for Brian Scalabrine and Patrick O’Bryant next. Keep up the good work Kevin!

    Was it McHale’s choice to change seats? Are there any examples of a time where a gm with poor history of building a successful team somehow became a worthy coach of the same team? I can’t think of many examples of GMs even giving themselves the coaching job or having both jobs. Nelson in Dallas (positive outcome). Bickerstaff in early BETCats days (mixed result – ok for what he had). Isiah in NY obviously didn’t work. Riley in Miami was mostly positive but ended horribly. Did Lenny Wilkens ever do both jobs?

    Just watched McHale’s season debut. After battling back in the game, the TeenWolves couldn’t run a play in the last few minutes. Terrible.

    Mchale is one of the worst GM’s ever! drafting people who never play in the nba, trading excellent players for crap (steph, roy, love) signing illegial contracts, signing kg’s monster contract.. the list goes on and on. He put this team together and now he gets the pay the consequences.
